Over a Hundred Spectators Injured at Fireworks Display on West Lake, E China
Nearly one hundred spectators were injured during a fireworks display at the opening of the West Lake International Expo on Saturday, in the eastern Chinese city of Hangzhou. The fireworks show, billed as low-altitude and low-pollution, started at 7.30pm above Hangzhou's popular tourist sites West Lake, and the Grand Canal. Fireworks fell among the audience standing by the Grand Canal, injuring at least one hundred people. [Mrs. Mao, Local Resident]: "At 8 pm I was thinking of going home while the display continued, suddenly something flew through the air at us. Then my husband was lying on the ground and I picked him up. At that time it was chaotic as fireworks came down then bounced up from the ground. We hurried to escape the site." Spectators suffered skin burns, and clothing was either burned or torn. Most of the injured were discharged from hospital but at least five suffering more serious injuries remain there. The cause of the accident is under investigation. Rights Group: Syria Using Cluster Bombs
Human Rights Watch produce evidence that the Syrian regime is using cluster bombs. Full Story: This video, said to be shot in Syria, shows what appears to be an unexploded cluster bomb. The munitions have been banned in most countries because bomblets like these can remain active for months. But Human Rights Watch say Syria's government has dropped them over civilian areas in the last week - part of an effort to fend off rebel advances. Rights workers condemned the use of the bombs. [Philippe Bolopion, Human Rights Watch, UN Director] "If we needed any further proof of the Syrian regime's complete disregard for the lives of its own citizens and children well here it is." This is what officials are worried about. While it's grainy, this video is said to show two children playing with an unexploded cluster bomb. Human Rights Watch called on Syria to stop using the munitions amid a bloody civil war that has already left 30000 people dead, according to some estimates. Skydiver Makes World Record Jump From Space
Skydiver Felix Baumgartner leaps into the stratosphere from space. Watch the footage, then the press conference. Full Story: Austrian daredevil Felix Baumgartner leaps into the stratosphere from a ballon near the edge of space. Arriving safely on the earth a full 10 minutes after leaping into space, Felix raises his arms in celebration. Soon he is embraced by his girlfriend, then by his mom. Speaking at a news conference, he describes how he felt at the moment of the jump. [Felix Baumgartner]: "And let me tell you when I was standing there on top of the world you become so humble you do not think about breaking records anymore, you do not think about gaining scientific data -- the only thing that you want is - you to come back alive because you don't want to die in front of your parents, your girlfriend and all of the people watching this. This became the most important thing to me when I was out there." Preliminary figures indicate that 3 world records were broken - the highest altitude skydive, the longest freefall without a parachute, and the fastest fall during a skydive. In fact, Felix entered the atmosphere at an estimated 800 miles per hour, becoming the first skydiver to break the sound barrier. But the daredevil stuntman remains humble. [Felix Baumgartner]: "Sometimes you have to get up really high to know how small you are." Felix says the space jump was his final high profile stunt. Description: Malala Yusufzai, the Pakistani schoolgirl shot by the Taliban, is on her way to the UK for treatment. Full Story: Malala Yusufzai, the Pakistani schoolgirl shot by Taliban gunmen for campaigning for girls' education, has been sent to the United Kingdom for medical treatment. It is hoped that Malala will receive the prolonged care she needs to fully recover physically and psychologically. An air ambulance provided by the United Arab Emirates is transporting Malala from Pakistan to the UK, according to a military spokesman. She will be transferred to a specialist center that provides integrated care to children who have sustained severe injury. The 14-year-old schoolgirl has become a powerful symbol of resistance against the efforts of the Pakistani Taliban to deprive girls of eduction. Her shooting has been strongly condemned at home and abroad. But despite Pakistanis holding some protests and candlelit vigils, government officials have not publicly criticized the Taliban by name. Many see this as another example of the state's failure to tackle militancy. Australians Plant Trees and Grasses
National Tree Day in Australia is a day when people come out to help plant trees. This event was founded by Olivia Newton-John for Planet Ark, an environmental not for profit organisation and is promoted by Lions Clubs worldwide. In spite of sleet and cold winds, children and adults are out early in Karkarook Park in Melbourne. They are busy getting their hands in the soil to plant trees and grasses on National Tree Day. [Peter O'Brien, Rotarian]: "The value of trees is first of all they take carbon dioxide out of the air, and also inject oxygen back into it. But what is most gratifying, particularly for young people to come along and be able to say 'I planted that tree and there it is now adding value to this wonderful community parkland.'" Several years ago, Karkarook Park was a quarry but has been transformed into a beautiful park with wetlands and walking tracks. Today the revegetation continues with the help of Lions, Scouts, Rotarians and various community groups. [Des Lucas, Chief Park Ranger]: "We've planted 2100 trees. We sort the plants out and make sure that the plants that we plant are appropriate for the site that we are planting and these particular plants go into the Two Million Trees Project that is being currently delivered up until 2014." There is no 'having a Sunday morning sleep in' for these enthusiastic volunteers. [Des Lucas, Chief Park Ranger]: "As part of the planting activity today we had people as young as four here and the oldest person was I ... Czechs Protest Anti-Japanese Riots in China
A group of Czech activists and supporters of Japanese culture were protesting against the anti-Japanese riots in China on Friday, in Prague's Wenceslas Square. [Jakub Zeman, Speaker]: "Huge anti-Japanese demonstrations take place in China and they develop into violence%mdashburning down Japanese shops, insulting tourists and setting Japanese cars on fire." Cases of protesters attacking Japanese citizens and tourists have been arising throughout China over the last several weeks. [Jakub Zeman, Speaker]: "The problem is that the Chinese authorities themselves are approving of this violence and they are supporting it, which is definitely very bad." Incidents have reportedly been triggered by Japan and China's conflict over the Senkaku Islands. However Czech protesters say, the Chinese Communist Party are using the Senkaku Islands issue to stir up anti-Japanese sentiment and arouse protests. They say the regime's true purpose is to divert Chinese citizens' attention away from their upcoming leadership change and the party's worsening internal problems. [Jiri Borsky, Demonstration Participant]: "The Chinese authorities are not effectively preventing anti-Japanese protesters from carrying out waves of horrible atrocities against human beings. In all other cases, the regime is immediately suppressing all expression of people's own opinions, right at the beginning." Some Czech activists recited the heart sutra in Japanese, to show support to those many oppressed and persecuted ... From: NTDTV Views: 795 37 ratings Time: 01:38 More in News & Politics

Centuries-old Murals Discovered in Guatemala
A local Guatemalan farmer discovers murals believed to have been painted by descendants of the ancient Maya culture, while renovating his home. Full story: In a ramshackle home in Guatemala's rural highlands, farmer Lucas Asicona made a priceless discovery when he decided to redo his kitchen. When he pulled back the plaster in his humble home, he discovered 300-year-old murals, a priceless piece of Guatemalan history. Scenes of tall Europeans beating drums and playing flutes stare out over the one-room dwelling where his family cooked, slept and played. So he carefully drew back the furniture and moved his wood-burning kitchen stove outside to protect the treasured artwork. [Asicona, Farmer]: "This is very important for us. We hope they don't fade in the future. We need to preserve them. We hope to receive support from an interested party, but we would have to approach them in order to ask for support." Asicona is among four householders in Chajul, an Ixil Maya community some 220 miles from Guatemala City, struggling to preserve murals revealed after peeling back plaster on the walls of ancient homes. Experts believe similar murals could lie hidden in a further eight homes in the town. The murals are believed to have been painted by descendants of the ancient Maya civilization which thrived between AD 250 and 900. It left behind a trove of pyramids and dozens of distinct Mayan groups who continue to endure. [Felipe Rivera, Historian]: "Our forefathers did this. They left ... Space Shuttle Endeavour Crawls Through Los Angeles
Spectators gawk as the space shuttle Endeavour starts a road trip to its new California home. The 12-mile trip will cost ten million dollars. Full Story: The space shuttle Endeavour sets off on a slow journey through Los Angeles, on its way to retirement at the California Science Center. It's a two-day crawl across 12 miles for the shuttle, which will become a public attraction. But squeezing it along narrow roads is no easy feat. To clear the way, traffic and streets lights have been temporarily removed, power lines shut down and some roads re-enforced to protect against the weight. Four hundred trees have also been felled%mdashalthough the science centre has pledged to plant a thousand more to make up for the loss. The entire project is set to cost ten million dollars. [Joe Grutzik, Spectator]: "I think it's awesome that it's here, it's great. Maybe it'll excite younger kids to look to the stars and try to do something exciting with their lives." [Miro Kroner, Spectator]: "It's a glorious American feature that we have here, just to build something so big and something that marks the US as kind of like a progressive force in space. I think it's worth seeing." The Endeavour flew 25 missions and was taken out of service as NASA's shuttle program came to an end. Salvage Work Continues on Costa Concordia 10 Months After Capsize
Ten months on from the capsizing of the Costa Concordia cruise liner, salvage work is progressing slowly with the onslaught of winter expected to hamper the operation. Meanwhile, lawyers are preparing to resume a pre-trial hearing. Full Story: Salvage work on the capsized Costa Concordia liner is progressing slowing off the Tuscan island of Giglio with the looming threat of wintry weather promising to slow the work even further. Work on the 951 foot-long cruise liner is still in its initial phases. Teams are seeking to stabilize the vessel to prevent it shifting down the rocky ledge it is resting on and plunging into the deep water of the surrounding marine reserve. US firm Titan Salvage and Italian firm Micoperi are handling the re-float and removal of the ship, which is likely to cost at least $300 million and last about a year. And while the logistic of the salvage operation are worked through on the coast, further inland lawyers prepare to discuss evidence in the trial against the Concordia's captain Francesco Schettino, set to resume on Monday. Prosecutors accuse Schettino of causing the disaster on January 13 by bringing the Concordia too close to shore and causing the capsizing of the cruiser. He is under formal investigation in the case, accused of multiple manslaughter and abandoning ship before the evacuation of more than 4200 passengers and crew was complete. Alive! Film Plane Disaster Anniversary Rugby Match
Forty years after the tragic Andes' plane crash in which survivors were forced to eat the remains of their dead colleagues, those survivors reflect on the effect of that crash, immortalized in the movie "Alive!" Forty years after a plane carrying an Uruguayan rugby team crashed high in the Andes, survivors gathered in Santiago, Chile to commemorate the anniversary. On October 13, 1972, a chartered aircraft carrying 45 passengers crashed into the mountains when pilots miscalculated their landing position. This was later known as the Andes flight disaster, and is still remembered today. Twenty-nine survived the initial accident but, without food or shelter from the cold, several more soon perished. Rescuers eventually gave them up for dead and survivors were forced to eat their fellow travelers just to survive. Two of the crash survivors set off to get help and eventually ran into Sergio Catalan, a local resident, who alerted authorities. The remaining 16 were rescued 72 days after the initial crash. Catalan said it is sheer joy to see how well they are all doing. [Sergio Catal%aacuten, Chilean Man who Found Survivors]: (Spanish, male) "I'm happy because they're all doing well and they're in shape for another 40 years." The dramatic story of the crash and courageous survival of the passengers was retold in the 1993 movie "Alive." Backers and Attackers of President Mursi Clash in Cairo
On Friday (October 12) opponents and supporters of Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi clashed in Cairo, in Tahrir Square. This is the first major incident between the two factions since the Islamist leader took office. The rivals are vying for a piece of the pie to shape a new Egypt after decades of autocracy. A new government is in place following the fall of Hosni Mubarak last year, but the country is still divided. Islamists and liberals disagree over the drafting of the new constitution, a necessity for the new parliament to be elected. Many of the thousands who gathered in Tahrir Square on Friday were also angry at a court ruling this week. Two former officials accused of charging on protesters were let go without punishment. Even before the ruling however, Mursi's opponents had called for protests against the recently elected leader. They are upset at what they say is a failure to deliver on promises in his first 100 days in office. State media quoted the Health Ministry as saying 110 people had sustained light to moderate injuries, but no deaths were reported For more news and videos visit ☛ ntdtv.org Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Add us on Facebook ☛ on.fb.me From: NTDTV Views: 111 3 ratings Time: 01:16 More in News & Politics
