Beijing Puts up 35 New Air Quality Monitoring Stations
After much pressure from citizens and the international community, Beijing has completed 35 new air-quality monitoring stations. Now with 50 monitors, the city can ca smaller particulate in the air, which was previously left out of official air quality data. Air particulates of PM 2.5 or less are considered the most dangerous because they can get into the lungs and cause severe health problems. These particulates come from things like industrial production, coal burning, vehicle emission and solvents. The Chinese regime attacked US authorities in June for doing independent readings from its embassy in Beijing. The US measured the dangerous PM 2.5 particulates, which until January, Beijing did not. It accused the US of using unfair standards to judge the air quality because the US has higher environmental standards. While the Beijing government is now publishing data on the dangerous particulates, it admits the "annual intensity of PM 2.5 still doubles the cap set by WHO." Bus Overturns on Highway Killing 14
A bus overturned on the Qindao-Yinchuan expressway in east China on Sunday, claiming 14 lives, and leaving over forty people injured. The accident happened when a bus traveling on the expressway hit a car, then crossed the median strip into oncoming traffic. This caused a second bus traveling in the opposite direction to overturn trying to avoid a head-on collision, landing upside down in a trench beside the highway. Six people died at the scene, and another eight died in hospital. Of the forty injured, nine are in a critical condition. The cause of the accident is unknown, and police say investigations are continuing. Nun Stops Sotheby's $ 1.6m Chinese Painting Auction
A painting by famous Chinese artist Zhang Daqian was set to sell at a Sotheby's auction house today in Hong Kong. But the sale was stopped after a Taiwanese nun claimed that the piece belonged to her family. Lu Chieh-chien filed a writ against the auction house with the Hong Kong High Court saying that it had been given to her father, who was a friend of the artist. [Lu Chieh-Chien, Claimant of $ 1.6mChinese Painting]: "In 1950 Zhang Daqian gifted this to his friend. The friend's named on the painting Gen-guan was my father's name." The painting, called "Riding in the Autumn Countryside" was estimated to sell for $1.6 million. Zhang Daqian is one of the most prestigious painters of the 20th century. He brought in more auction revenue than any other artist in 2011. But the Buddhist nun says her claim is not about sentimentality or fame, she just wants the painting returned to its rightful owner. [Lu Chieh-Chien, Claimant of $1.6M Chinese Painting]: "Although as a nun, I don't think about sentimentalities like those between friends, or those between a father and daughter, this was more about justice. I did not ask anyone to auction this painting, I really want to find out how it ended up there." Lu said the painting was given to her as a wedding present by her father, but when she took up the robe, she entrusted it to her brother. According to the South China Morning Post her brother left it in the hands of an employee, who she has asked to account for its whereabouts. [Lu ... Huawei and ZTE Threat to US National Security: Congressional Report
If you're a US company thinking about buying from Huawei, China's largest telecom gear maker, "find another vendor if you care about your intellectual property; if you care about your consumers' privacy and you care about the national security of the United States of America." That's according to Mike Rogers, the chairman of the US House of Representatives Intelligence Committee. Last November, he and Congressman Dutch Ruppersberger lead an investigation into reports that Chinese telecommunication firms Huawei and ZTE Corp had close ties with the Chinese regime and their business in the US would be a threat to national security. The committee released its findings of that investigation today. Citing credible allegations from unnamed industry experts and employees from Huawei, both current and former, the panel said there was evidence that the company could be involved in bribery and corruption, discriminatory behavior and copyright infringement. Huawei's founder, Ren Zhengfei, started the company after leaving the Chinese army and his ties to the military has been of particular focus. According to US intelligence officials, China has been foremost in the world in its attempts at economic espionage against the United States. ZTE's stock has fallen 48% this year, according to Bloomberg news, following the scrutiny it has received in the US. Both companies and China's Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei have publicly denounced the hearing as prejudiced and unfounded. For ... Skydiver Prepares to Break Sound Barrier
Austrian Felix Baumgartner prepares for attempt to become first skydiver to break the sound record. Full story: An Austrian extreme skydiver has been making final preparations for his attempt to jump from a balloon-hoisted capsule at a record altitude of 23 miles. The attempt by Felix Baumgartner will be the highest, fastest freefall in history and he will also attempt to become the first skydiver to break the sound barrier%mdash690 mph. The current record for the highest-altitude skydive is 102800 feet (19.47 miles). It was set 52 years ago by US Air Force Captain Joe Kittinger, who is serving as an adviser to Baumgartner. During the jump the 43-year-old Austrian will be wearing an astronaut-style pressured suit and helmet, which if breached could cause boiling blood, a condition where lethal bubbles form in his bodily fluids. Another risk for Baumgartner is that he could lose control of his body which may cause his eyeballs to hemorrhage and possibly put a blood clot in his brain. The risk isn't enough to stop Baumgartner, who is also known as "Fearless" Felix. [FELIX BAUMGARTNER, Skydiver]: "Doing something like this, breaking the speed of sound, breaking Joe Kittinger has always been my dream since I was a little and I'm so happy that Red Bull has been supporting this idea for so many years." The attempt to break the record was originally scheduled for Monday (October 8) but weather conditions have forced plans on to Tuesday (October 9). [Don Day, Meteorologist]: "Between ... David Blaine Endures Lightning Storm for 73 Hours
Magician David Blaine performs million volt stunt in New York City. Full Story: David Blaine goes toe-to-toe with one million volts of electricity on Friday. The magician was elevated to a platform above a high-voltage Tesla coil, dressed in a 20-pound chain-mail suit, and proceeded to shoot purplish arcs of lightning out of his hands all in unison with music. Blaine will stand on the 20-foot-high platform for 73 hours without food amid an artificial lightning storm crackling between low-current, million-volt Tesla coils. During a press conference earlier in the week, he described how this latest idea grew out of an image he had of himself at the center of a giant plasma globe. Realizing the idea would require him to exist in an airless vacuum%mdasha feat beyond even Blaine's prowess%mdashhe adapted the idea to instead use Tesla coils. "I don't know if he's really feeling something or if it's like those volts that you can touch and nothing happenings." [Archie Plopimio, Spectator]: "I think it's insane because they said it's a million volts, nobody could take that, nobody could take like more than 300 volts, people going to die right away, seriously." [Katie Oneill, Spectator]: "I think it's really amazing because it is sort of that like Harry Houdini sort of vibe that he just wants to sort of make people still believe that something can be really cool and it's free and it's just a spectacle, it's really beautiful." Full Story: South Africa's Anglo American Platinum, also known as Amplats, fired 12000 workers Friday for participating in an unauthorized strike. The move is an effort by the world's largest platinum producer to push back after a number of strike-induced production stoppages earlier this year. Hundreds of miners who clashed with police on Friday were eventually convinced to lay down their weapons%mdashmainly sticks%mdashand leave the demonstration site. Japanese Car Sales Slump for September In China
Last month, a territorial conflict between China and Japan ignited anti-Japan riots around China. The more violent ones saw protesters targeting Japanese businesses and smashing Japanese cars. Japanese automakers are now reporting a slump in sales for September in China, which many attribute to anti-Japanese sentiment. With owners of Japanese cars being targeted as well, consumers are thinking twice about buying Japanese products. Mazda reported a 35% percent decrease from September sales last year, as well as damage to some of its dealerships in China. Mitsubishi Motors Corp reported sales went down 63% from September 2011 and Nissan has stopped output till October 8th. Japanese media reported that Toyota also suffered this month but the carmaker says it will not release its numbers till Tuesday. One Nissan employee says despite sales being bad, things will pick up again once people have cooled off. [Shu Miaoteng, Showroom Sales Manager, Nissan]: "Our Nissan products are a state-owned and state-run operation, which means that it's a fully Chinese property. So after all of this, when everyone has quieted down and distinguished exactly what really counts as Japanese products and Chinese products, in this way, after judging it rationally, our sales volume will recover." A Toyota executive told Reuters that despite an overall low in September sales, the end of the month did start to pick up. From: NTDTV Views: 235 3 ratings Time: 01:32 More in News & Politics

Tennis Great Roger Federer Recieves Death Threat in Shanghai
The world's number one ranked tennis player, Roger Federer, is in Shanghai for next week's Shanghai Masters tournament. But the Swiss tennis great and his family are on alert after he received an online death threat. A Chinese blogger, who goes by "Blue Cat Polytheistic Religion Founder 07", wrote, "On October 6, I plan to assassinate Federer for the purpose of tennis extermination." The user also photoshopped an image of Federer decapitated, next to a masked executioner holding an axe. Tournament organizers have increased security for Federer and his family who is there with him. Tournament director Yang Yibin wrote to the Shanghai Youth Daily, saying security has been stepped up for Mr. Federer and his family. Attacks on tennis stars have happened before. Congressmen Urge Clinton To Release Information on Forced Organ Harvesting in China
There are more calls for the United States government to act over allegations that the Chinese regime has engaged in illegal forced organ harvesting. This time, the call is coming from US lawmakers. This week, 106 members of the US Congress co-signed this letter. They're asking the State Department to release any information it has on the forced organ harvesting allegations. That includes any information Wang Lijun, the former police chief of Chongqing, may have given to US officials after he fled to the US Consulate in Chengdu. The letter comes less than one month after a Congressional Hearing on the subject on September 12. During that hearing, a former prisoner of conscience, medical doctors and a published author presented evidence suggesting that the Chinese Communist Party has been killing tens of thousands of religious and political dissidents for their organs. Victims identified in the letter include Uighurs, Tibetans, House Christians, and practitioners of the Falun Gong spiritual practice. In particular, the bi-partisan letter mentions claims that Wang Lijun may have given information to US consulate officials about the harvesting of organs from still living Falun Gong practitioners. Dr. Erping Zhang, the spokesman for the Falun Dafa Information Center, says it's significant that so many Congress members have given their support, and the US government should reveal what it knows. China Offers $474m to ASEAN Amidst Sea Disputes
The Chinese regime today offered 3 billion yuan, or 434 million US dollars, in maritime cooperation funds to countries in Southeast Asia. The offer to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations came during ASEAN's first Expanded Maritime Forum, which took place in Manila, Philippines. The Chinese regime and four ASEAN members have been locked in disputes over waters in the South China Sea. The forum focused on the relevance of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), a law that has come into focus during recent sovereignty disputes. The Japanese government proposed the expanded forum. It came one day after meetings between members of ASEAN. 10 countries including China, the US, India and South Korea joined the discussions on Friday. The keynote speaker, Japan's Deputy Foreign Minister Koji Tsuruoka, said regional co-operation was paramount in resolving maritime territorial disputes. While not directly mentioning its own rift over the Diaoyu or Senkaku Islands with China, Tsuruoka stressed the importance of settling such disputes under international maritime laws. [Koji Tsuruoka, Japan's Deputy Foreign Minister] "It is indispensable for any party concerned to resolve disputes over territories in a peaceful manner based on international law. In this case, all parties should clarify their territorial claims in accordance to international law."
