Dalai Lama, "No Alternative Except Some Political Reform" in China
At a news conference in Japan today, the Dalai Lama said China needs political reform. He warns that China's next leader will have to make political reforms to catch up with the economy's expansive growth. [Dalai Lama, Tibetan Spiritual Leader]: "Now Hu Jintao's era past, now Xi Jinping coming president. I think there's no alternative except some political change, so political reform. Economy reform already there, so lot of sort of development. So that's also brought some good things." The Buddhist leader says the methods the Chinese regime uses to maintain stability are actually working against them. [Dalai Lama, Tibetan Spiritual Leader]: "And using force brings suspicion, fear. That's just opposite of the harmony. So the goal, harmony, wonderful. Stability, wonderful. But method, use secrecy, censorship and bully." Speaking of the controversial Diaoyu or Senkaku islands, the Dalai Lama says things would be different if China made democratic reforms. [Dalai Lama, Tibetan Spiritual Leader]: "More democratic principles, then many issues can solve, at least reduce these problems. So this issue with the islands, I think can be much easier to deal." The Dalai Lama says nationalism has reached an unhealthy extreme in China, which will hurt the country in international politics. [Dalai Lama, Tibetan Spiritual Leader]: "Chinese people must love their country, their nation but go extreme. Almost like in the whole sort of planet Chinese culture is best, Chinese language is best ... From: NTDTV Views: 18 3 ratings Time: 02:31 More in News & Politics

CCP Expels Former Railway Minister Liu Zhijun
Bo Xilai was not the only official to be purged from the Party over the weekend. State-run Xinhua News Agency reports that Communist leaders have endorsed the expulsion of China's former railway minister Liu Zhijun from the Party during the 7th plenary session of the Central Committee. Liu was sacked last year for corruption, "serious disciplinary violations", and failing to ensure safety standards that led to the deadly Wenzhou train crash in July last year. Other announcements from the plenum include the appointment of two new vice chairmen of the Central Military Commission. The commission is in charge of the People's Liberation Army. An amendment to the Communist Party constitution was also passed during the plenum, though the details have not been released. GIANT Black Marlin Caught off Australia Coast
Amateur video shows a fisherman catching a giant black marlin off the coast of Australia. Full Story: A massive haul. A New Zealand fisherman made a catch of a lifetime on Friday. Out looking for marlin, Douglas Perry made a catch of a lifetime, reeling in a half ton fish. [Douglas Perry, Fisherman]: "It was pretty awesome. We saw it hit the bait and then it started to pull the line out and oh, very, very powerful and a real experience." He was aboard the Moana III, off the coast of Queensland, Australia, and he captured the catch on video. The excursion was part of a research program, tracking giant marlin as they migrate around the world. The boat's skipper has been making these fishing trips for some 20 years , and in that time, Daniel McCarthy thinks this was one of the largest. [Daniel McCarthy, Fisherman]: "Yeah, it's certainly right up the top of the spectrum there. You don't see too many fish of that calibre. We catch a lot of large marlin but you only see one every now and again that's sort of in the 1200 pound range so it was a pretty special day." It was a particularly tough catch too. The two had to put the boat in reverse when the 544 kilogram marlin refused to be reeled in. New Zealand PM Accused Of Calling David Beckham "Thick"
The New Zealand Prime Minister is under fire for allegedly calling David Beckham "thick". Full Story: New Zealand's Prime Minister John Key was grilled by a TV presenter over insulting comments he is said to have made which caused a social media storm. A New Zealand radio station claims Key described legendary footballer David Beckham as "a nice guy" but then used colorful language to deride his intelligence. On Monday, Key said he did not want to elaborate on comments he said were off the cuff and off the record. [TV Presenter] "Can I just clarify that you are saying that you didn't call David Beckham thick?" [John Key, New Zealand Prime Minister] "No, what I am saying is that somebody has overheard a personal conversation and that's their recollection of it. I am just not going to engage in discussions about that. That's their view." Key's comments have been ridiculed across the Twittersphere. Former England football captain Beckham was one of London's celebrity Olympic ambassadors and took part in the opening ceremony. US Elections 2012: The Final Push
National polls show Obama and Romney neck and neck in the presidential race, but media pundits suggest Obama may just edge it come Tuesday... Full Story: The final weekend of the 2012 US election campaign saw President Barack Obama and Governor Mitt Romney on a hectic schedule across America's key swing states. Ohio in particular has become a central battleground, and no Republican has ever reached the White House without winning this state. National polls continue to show a race that is virtually even, but Obama appears to be pulling ahead in the swing states, and most media pundits are making him favorite. Despite concerns that Hurricane Sandy would delay the US Department of Labor's monthly report, on Friday statistics revealed 171000 new jobs in October. This is a boost for Obama; the fragility of the economic recovery has been the main issue of the election. Romney focussed instead on the unemployment rate of 7.9%. It has been decades since a president has won re-election with a jobless rate this high. Hurricane Sandy's impact on the election will be smaller than expected. Despite last week's devastation, power has returned to most of Manhattan, and the military have stepped in to ease the fuel shortages in New Jersey. With just one day now to go, President Obama is banking on star power. His rally on Monday evening in Colombus will include Jay-Z and Bruce Springsteen. Prince Charles "A Few Sausages Short Of A Barbie"
Description: As Charles and Camilla touch down in Australia, the Prince admits the jet-lag is getting to him... Full Story Prince Charles and his wife, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, arrived in Australia on Monday as part of their 13-day Diamond Jubilee Pacific tour. First stop was the small town of Longreach in the state of Queensland. The Royal couple watched a demonstration by the Royal Flying Doctor Service at the Qantas Museum Hangar. They also toured the Stockman's Hall of Fame, a museum dedicated to the cattle trade. Camilla briefly held a baby Red Kangaroo. Later in the day the Prince sported a traditional Akubra hat, as he met local families at a community barbecue. [Prince Charles, Britain's Prince of Wales]: "It is more than 15 and a half thousand kilometers from London to the Stockman's Hall of Fame and I'm so jet-lagged that I feel a few sausages short of a barbie." Prince Charles said it was the Duchess of Cornwall's first official visit to Australia, and admitted to being caught out by the country's strict customs and quarantine regulations when they arrived. [Prince Charles, Britain's Prince of Wales]: "Now Ladies and Gentlemen, I'm rather hoping that some of you might have been able to initiate her into the special pleasure of Tim Tams, not to mention the unique experience of Vegemite, as our one and only jar of jubilee Marmite was confiscated on arrival here in Australia." Staten Island Residents Furious Over Slow Sandy Response
Staten island residents say that they've been largely overlooked by those directing post-Sandy response efforts. Full story: It's been days since Hurricane Sandy lashed the East Coast, and residents of Staten Island, one of the harder hit areas, say they've been forgotten in the recovery efforts. [Colleen Wood, Resident, Staten Island]: "Nobody came here. Nobody came. We called the insurance company, they said it's going to be days for anybody to come down. So FEMA is supposed to come and help, hopefully, just the house and see what the government can help." Many in this neighborhood on the south shore are without power and water. Some have lost their homes. Most such as Richard Fox are dealing with massive damages. More galling is the other stuff they've had to handle with almost no help. [Richard Fox, Resident, Staten Island]: "I found two bodies here yesterday%mdashtwo senior citizens who live in Harbor Court Residence right here," "So, he was 89, she was 65. They couldn't make it out in time." Some in this area say New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has ignored the primarily blue collar neighborhood directly across the harbor from Manhattan. [John Maitland, Resident, Staten Island]: "I know my mayor, who I voted for personally, who extended his term limits doesn't even have the fortitude to come down to Staten Island to cover it. To see what's going on and he's too worried about a marathon. A marathon while people are struggling to survive. We're finding people dead and this ... Tempers Flare Over Gas Shortage in New York
Days after Sandy, residents in New York struggle with the gasoline shortage, causing tempers to rise in fuel stations. Full story: Frustration grew on Friday (November 2) over fuel shortages, for New York residents trying to return their lives to normal after Hurricane Sandy. The hurricane brought a record storm surge to coastal areas when it slammed into the US Northeast on Monday. In the lower portion of Manhattan empty gas stations were seen without customers, lights, or security personnel. But 20 blocks from one working station in Midtown, cars lined up to fill their almost empty tanks. [Ramon Gonzales, New Yorker]: "Now I'm here, in front of the pumps and now they're saying they're not giving any gas except for emergency vehicles. I have kids in my car, my wife is in there. I can't even move the car; it's empty. They want me to leave. Where am I supposed to go? Another eight hour line?" Gonzales had been waiting for three and a half hours and had an argument with a police officer. On the other hand, some managed to keep their cool amidst the long wait in the cold. [Michael, Perez, Construction Worker]: "Everybody's hot headed. Everybody's upset. Everybody has a family to get to, has money to make, has things to do. Everybody has a reason to be upset but, you know, some people are just lashing out more than others. So, I just, kind of, keep in mind that people are upset. There's no reason for me to add on anybody else's stress. I'm already stressed as it is." The taxi ... From: NTDTV Views: 720 11 ratings Time: 01:51 More in News & Politics

Early Voting Underway Across the US
Some Americans cast their ballots early ahead of next week's elections. Full story: The official US election polling day is Tuesday November 6th, but early voting is in full swing in nearly all 50 states. Election officials say they expect a record 40 percent of voters to cast their ballots early... although who they vote for is anyone's guess. The latest Reuters/Ipsos poll has both President Barack Obama and his opponent Mitt Romney nearly neck and neck. [Arlene Hollis, Early Voter]: "I identify with President Barack Obama. I think that he understands my people, my base, the middle class, I think he gets it. That's where he came from, so I think he understands me. I don't think Mitt Romney has any clue about it." [Ronnie Aiken, Early Voter]: "I've just been a conservative and I think the way the government is going is too socialist and I just can't vote for that. I think that Mitt Romney is a businessman, he knows what's going on in the world and he's just going to be a better president." In 2008 President Obama's campaign focused heavily on early voting leaving Republicans to pick up the slack, which is why this time around both candidates have stressed early voting in their campaigning. More Grassroots Support for Persecution Victim
Residents from Zhengding County in Hebei province are rallying behind a victim of persecution, despite the threat of crackdown by authorities. Li Lankui is a practitioner of the Falun Gong spiritual practice. On June 1st, Zhengding police detained Li during a security sweep ahead of a visit by an US official, Iowa Governor Terry Branstad. 703 local residents protested Li's detention, by putting their thumb prints on an appeal letter for Li's release. Li's supporters say local authorities retaliated, and began questioning those who participated in the appeal letter. According to rights group, the World Organization to Investigate the Persecution of Falun Gong, Hebei police also cracked down on other Falun Gong adherents. One practitioner, Yang Yinqiao, reportedly fell to her death in nearby Shijiazhuang city, as she tried to get away from security agents. Despite the security clampdown, Zhengding residents have continued to stand up for Li Lankui. Three more appeal letters, each with hundreds of fingerprints, have surfaced. Hebei resident Mr Cao says the wave of support indicates that the Chinese regime is losing grip on the public it has tried to control with high-pressure tactics. [Mr Cao, Heibei Resident]: "I sympathize with Falun Gong. The public is slowly waking up. It used to be high pressure threats, but now the public no longer wants to remain silent, and are standing up to it. I think the Communist Party's iron fist rule is about to come to an end." China's Media Covers Sandy, Avoids Own Protest "Storm"
As Hurricane Sandy battled the eastern China's state run media CCTV had cameras glued on Hurricane Sandy when it crossed through the US But no reporters covered this storm inside China itself. It was a people storm, if you will. Thousands of Ningbo residents %mdash shouting, holding signs and saying, "No to the production of paraxylene." This chemical, in short PX, can damage the central nervous system, liver and kidneys if inhaled in large amounts. Chronic exposure may even result in death. And until Monday this oil refinery was going to produce it. Chinese netizens were outraged at the media blackout. Right now they're circulating two images on the internet. This one is of a CCTV reporter covering Sandy in the US And this one is of a foreign reporter in Ningbo. The contrast earned angry and cynical comments from the online Chinese community. Here's what one writer from Guangdong wrote: [Poster "Tian You," Guandong]: "CCTV reporters fly to the US and stand without fear in the hurricane, just trying to prove how Americans are in a life and death situation. But I want to ask, 'Where were you when Ningbo held protests?'" Currently Ningbo government declared it will halt the 8.8 billion dollar project. After violent clashes with police over the weekend, the protests died down on Monday. From: NTDTV Views: 324 13 ratings Time: 01:43 More in News & Politics

Forum Founder Gets 8-Year Sentence for Online Post
Chinese democracy activist, Cao Haibo, was sentenced to eight years in prison on October 31st for starting a web forum called "Strengthen China's Society." It offered a platform for young Chinese to express their opinions on democratic rights and freedoms. Cao was arrested last October for his online comments. Authorities charged him with subversion, a vague accusation that's often used to silence dissent. He was tried in secrecy, and received his sentence this week. Chinese human rights lawyer, Tang Jingling, says Cao didn't have a full appreciation of the Communist regime, and did not realize his online comments would get him into trouble. Still, Tang was surprised at the severity of Cao's punishment. [Tang Jingling, China Mainland Lawyer]: (male, chinese) "The sentencing is really out of our anticipation. At first, we thought that if the authority dared to sentence him, it would be at most 3 or 4 years, which is a lot. However he was sentenced to 8 years. We can tell that the authority's suppression of human rights and dissidents is still very sever." One resident who volunteered in the aftermaths of the 2008 Wenchuan earthquakes says that the system is slated against political dissidents. [Wang Xiaodong]: (male, chinese) "Public security can frame (you in) a crime, and then the procuratorate can prosecute you, and then the court sentences you. Hear Elephant "Speak" Korean
An Asian elephant named Koshik can imitate human speech, say multinational researchers. The elephant says words in Korean that apparently can be understood by speakers of the language. It's unclear why 22-year-old Koshik started mimicking human speech but this researcher says that it might be related to his experiences as a juvenile. [Sukhun Oh, Co-Researcher]: "To us, this research shows that Koshik obviously learned and imitated human speech to establish a relationship with his keepers." Koshik was the only elephant living at Everland Zoo, south of Seoul, for about five years in his youth. He had only people for company during an important phase for bonding and development. [Sukhun Oh, Co-Researcher]: "The research group have much interest in whether Koshik will express more correctly the words he imitates now and whether he will learn more words. And they will research more accordingly." Koshik made headlines in 2010 by attracting tourists with his unusual ability. But the researchers have now run tests where they asked native Korean speakers to write down what they heard when listening to recordings of the elephant. They found that by sticking his trunk in his mouth to help form the sounds, he has a vocabulary of the five Korean words for 'hello', 'sit down', 'no', 'lie down' and 'good'. There is no evidence that Koshik understands the meaning of the words he is using. But rsearchers say Koshik's ability of imitating human speech provides an important basis to study ... Rebels Kill 28 Syrian Soldiers
Rebels kill at least 28 government soldiers in 3 attacks in and around Saraqeb village as an airstrike destroys a bakery near Aleppo and Kurds take to the streets in Derik. Full story: Thursday proved a bloody day in Syria's unending civil war. Amateur footage uploaded to a social media website purports to show rebels roughly rounding up government soldiers in the Syrian village of Saraqeb. Shortly after, gunfire echoes throughout the building as the rebel fighters apparently execute their captives. Reports claim at least 28 government soldiers were killed in 3 separate attacks around the village, however, Reuters cannot independently verify this video. A government airstrike destroyed a bakery in a town just west of Aleppo, killing more than a dozen residents and wounded upwards of 40 others. This man says embattled President Bashar al-Assad has ruined the town's only source of food production, but added that residents will not surrender to the regime. Syria's bloody conflict has also roused the country's ethnic Kurd population. Hundreds took to the streets in the community of Derik to voice their anger over Kurdish-language school closures that they blame on Assad.
