Huawei May Face Exclusion in Canada Network Plan
More bad news for Chinese telecommunication giants Huawei and ZTE. Earlier this week, the US House of Representatives Intelligence Committee urged businesses in the United States not to do business with the two Chinese companies. Now, the Canada government is also strongly indicating that they will follow suit, citing the same reasons%mdashthe Chinese companies are seen as a national security risk. Questions have been raised over Huawei's and ZTE connection to the Chinese regime, which is gaining a reputation for virulent cyber warfare. At a news conference on Tuesday, spokesman for Canadian Prime Minster Stephen Harper said they would invoke a national security exception allowing them to block the companies without violating international trade obligations. It's been deemed too risky to have Huawei and ZTE put together the network for government phone calls, emails and data center services. The decision would only affect the handling of government networks. Huawei has a thriving business in the Canadian private sector. Huawei and ZTE are the world's second- and fifth-largest makers of wireless telecoms gear. China's Judicial Reform White Paper Unconvincing: Analyst
The Chinese regime is often criticized for being one of the worst human rights violators in the world. Despite the track record, Chinese authorities have given themselves a pat on the back for making progress in protecting justice and human rights. On Tuesday, the regime issued a judicial reform whitepaper that's meant to, quote, "maintaining social fairness, justice and human rights protection." The paper announced plans to deter the use of torture to extract confessions. It also seeks to protect the rights of criminals and for attorneys to exercise their duties. Columnist and China analyst Xia Xiaoqiang says these measures will produce few outcomes, if other elements critical to judicial fairness are lacking. [Xia Xiaoqiang, Columnist, China Analyst] "Currently, in Chinese society we know social justice does not exist. That's because it lacks judicial independence and media freedom. These two are co-dependent. Currently the Communist Party controls the media. The media has no press freedom, the public has no freedom to speak, and so the judicial system is lacking in oversight." The whitepaper also pledged to reform the regime's labor re-education system. Currently, individuals can be sentenced up to three years to Chinese labor camps with no judicial process. Chinese law experts have called the system illegal, and rights groups have identified it as one the worst sources of human rights abuses, particularly against prisoners of conscience. Xia says unless the labor re ... From: NTDTV Views: 54 3 ratings Time: 02:17 More in News & Politics

China News Broadcast, October 10, 2012: Chinese Finance Chief Skips Japan IMF, World Bank Meetings
In today's NTD China News, China's Finance Minister and top banking official have missed the IMF and World Bank meetings in Japan. After being labeled a security threat by a US Congressional report, Chinese telecoms gear maker Huawei Technologies may be excluded by the Canadian government over those security risks. Chinese democracy activist Tang Baiqiao has urged Li Wangzhi, his former classmate, and the first born of disgraced Chinese official Bo Xilai, to leave China out of fears for his safety. The Chinese regime issues its first judicial reform white paper. It's meant to better protect justice and human rights but one analyst says without judicial and media freedoms no reform will be effective. German authorities say contaminated strawberries that poisoned more than 11000 Germans came from China. A Chinese worker's unusual demand for pay has gone viral on Chinese internet. Two US Students Win Nobel Prize in Chemistry
Nobel Prize in Chemistry goes to two American scientists. This Year's Nobel Prize in Chemistry goes to two American scientists. Robert Lefkowitz and Brian Kobilka are awarded the 2012 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their research on G-protein-coupled receptors. Their discovery is linked to what makes many medicines on the market achieve their effect. The cells in the human body have receptors that can receive signals and instructions. Scientists knew how adrenaline can make blood pressure rise but it took a long time to understand how it works and it was through the research of Robert Lefkowitz and Brian Kobilka that it was discovered how this process works. [Staffan Normark, Secretary General, Royal Swedish Academy ] "The Nobel Prize in chemistry is really fantastic this year. It award discoveries that allow us to understand how our cells communicate with the outside world and how the cells can translate information from the outside into action occurring on the inside. For example all the reaction we are felling when we get scared, when we feel pain." For example the G-protein receptors in the cells are at work when we use our senses like smell, taste, vision and sight. Adrenaline and dopamine are signal substances that the receptors on the cells can interpret to read the environment around it and act. [Sara Snogerup Linse - Prof of Physical Chemistry] "So this year's prize tells us how this signaling mechanism goes on in the receptor protein. How it's built, how it ... Usain Bolt to Switch to Soccer or 400 Meters?
Bolt talks about defending his titles, a new distance or a new event and says he will decide at the start of next season. Full story: Usain Bolt has won the title of the world's fastest man, and this year three gold medals at the London Olympics. His strong suit is the one and two-hundred meter sprint. But the athlete is now saying he might be ready to try something new. [Usain Bolt, Fastest Man in the World]: "There's a few things I've thought about. I could always try the 400 meters, which I don't want to do. I could try to run faster over both my events. I could try another event, maybe long-jump, or as I said, 400 meters." However, on a trip to New Zealand earlier this week, Bolt dismissed rumors he may change events before the next Olympic Games. [Usain Bolt, Fastest Man in the World]: "There's a few things that I could try, other sports that I could work towards, so we'll see what I'll decide at the start of the season." Further in the future though, Bolt says he might want to take his talents to the soccer field. [Usain Bolt, Fastest Man in the World]: "I've always wanted to try soccer. So I don't know. Maybe at the end of my career, near to the end of my career. I don't know, but it would be something that I would love to try because I think I'll be good at it by just watching TV and seeing these guys playing. Led Zeppelin Walk Red Carpet for New Film
Led Zeppelin walks red carpet for new film "Celebration Day." Full story: British rockers Led Zeppelin walk the red carpet on Tuesday for the New York premiere of their new film. [Robert Plant, Vocalist of "Led Zeppelin"]: "We didn't change popular music. We just joined in with everybody else - just had a great time, and you know very well that nobody ever imagined that the great trivias of teenage rock and roll would last on and last on. Maybe it didn't. Maybe this is just one of them phenomenas. It's quite interesting, really.." The film is called "Celebration Day" and is based on a charity concert in London in 2007. It was the first big show the band did in 27 years after they broke up in 1980. Founding members Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, and the son of the late drummer John Bonham, all met up on the red carpet. Page, the lead guitarist of the band, says he thinks the movie really shows their synergy. [Jimmy Page, Guitarist of "Led Zeppelin"]: "People will get a chance to see the communication between us on stage and the passion that we have. I think that's conveyed very well within the film." Jason Bonham says he was honored to be able to play in his father's place. [Jason Bonham, Son of Late John Bonham]: "It's an ultimate dream come true. Kate Goes Solo to Newcastle as William Attends Funeral
The Duchess of Cambridge carried out her first official trip to England's northeast alone on Wednesday. Her husband, Prince William, canceled his appearance to go to the funeral of his former nanny who died last month. Inside Newcastle Civic Centre, Kate met representatives from a number of community organizations. She tried her hand at the Paralympic sport of boccia, a game similar to lawn bowling. Competing with her were two students from Percy Hedley, a school that teaches children with cerebral palsy and motor disorders. Kate also visited a community project in Elswick Park, where she met young community gardeners. She told the children she grows her own vegetables at home. Meanwhile, Kate's husband, Prince William, joined other mourners at the funeral for his former nanny, Olga Powell. Powell cared for William and Prince Harry when they were young boys, including the difficult period during their parents' breakup. The former royal nanny, who was in her 80s, died from a heart attack last month. She had worked for the Prince and Princess of Wales from the 1980s until the early 1990s. French Police Discover Terror Network, Bomb-making Chems
French police discovered bomb-crafting materials and weapons during an investigation into suspected radical Islamists across France, according to Paris prosecutor Francois Molins. On Wednesday, Molins spoke at a news conference, where he said 12 suspects were arrested over the weekend, and that the police discovered the chemicals and guns in a garage in Torcy, a suburb east of Paris, on Tuesday. The garage belongs to one of the suburbs, and as such, the dozen would be held for another 24 hours. [Francois Molins, Paris Prosecutor]: "I can say that at this stage in our operations we have discovered in addition to a pump-action shotgun and handguns, bags containing potassium nitrate, sulphur, saltpetre, recipients like pressure cookers, car lightbulbs. These are products and instruments that are useful for the manufacture of what are called improved explosive devices." The prosecutor said that the police had discovered a dangerous terror network. They had been investigating a grenade attack against a kosher grocery in the town of Sarcelles. The alleged leader of the group was killed on Saturday in Strasbourg in an exchange with the police. [Francois Molins]: "We can say that we are clearly and objectively confronted with a terror cell that is extremely dangerous. Everything will be done, using all the powers that are conferred on us by the law to put an end to these actions and to prevent any further commission of a terrorist attack in France." Keepers in China dress up as panda bears
Caretakers at the Wolong Nature Reserve in Sichuan Province are trying a new method for luring a panda cub into a crate. It's not particularly pleasant though. The caretakers dressed up in panda suites and covered themselves with panda feces and urine. Once they passed the panda inspection they distracted the mother with bamboo. Caretakers played around the crate to show the cub there was nothing to fear. Once two-year-old Taotao climbed into the crate, the caretakers quickly closed the latch. Taotao is being released into the wild where they hope he will help repopulate the panda population. Pandas are on the endangered species list, with less than two-thousand remaining in the wild. Senior Chinese Officials Skips IMF and World Bank Meetings in Japan
The IMF and World Bank are having their annual meetings in Tokyo today but a few faces were missing from the expected line up. The governor of China's Central Bank, Zhou Xiaochuan, and China's Finance Minister, Xie Xuren, will not be in attendance. In their place will be Yi Gang, Vice Head of the People's Bank of China and Vice Finance Minister, Zhu Guangyao. It's not customary for lower level officials to lead a delegation to meetings of such international importance, but according to the Chinese regime, the senior officials were unavailable. The official reason for the last minute change has been blamed on a scheduling conflict. But Chinese state media has linked the Chinese regime's islands dispute with Japan to the delegation swap. There is also speculation that the officials wanted to stay in China ahead of the leadership transition on November 8th%mdashthe preparation for which has consumed the Communist leaders in recent months. Japan's Finance Minister Koriki Jojima said it is regrettable the senior Chinese officials could not attend. He suggests the political snub only hurts the Chinese regime itself. [Koriki Jojima, Japanese Finance Minister]: "As was noted in the question, I was told that Finance Minister Xie and Central bank Governor Zhou would not be attending. As the Tokyo meetings are very important meetings, having a country's representatives not participate is very regrettable." Chinese Activist Urges Bo Xilai's Eldest Son to Leave China
Chinese democracy activist Tang Baiqiao has urged the first-born son of disgraced official Bo Xilai to leave China, saying he may be in danger there. Tang, a student leader during the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests, developed an unlikely friendship with Li Wangzhi when they attended Columbia University between 2001 and 2003. Li was born to Bo Xilai and his ex-wife Li Danyu, and has been living in China, after working for Citigroup in the United States. In an interview with New York Times last week, Li Danyu recounted Bo Xilai accusing their son of plotting to kill Gu Kaiai%mdashBo Xilai's current wife who's now serving a commuted life sentence for the murder of British businessman Neil Heywood. Earlier this year there were unconfirmed reports that Bo Xilia had put Li Wangzhi under house arrest late last year. In April, Li gave an interview with Bloomberg saying he was in China, but was not under detention. Still, Tang Baiqiao says given the complex factional infighting within the Communist leadership, his former classmate may be in danger. Now living in the US, Tang is urging Li to leave China. [Tang Baiqiao, Chinese Democracy Activist] "From my understanding of the Communist Party's power struggle, and its current situation, these two factors give me the feeling that Li will not do well in China, so I've decided to urge him to leave after some careful thought." Chinese Migrant Worker's Hilarious Petition Goes Viral
It's an unbelievable piece of satire in a country known for iron-fisted censorship and harsh handling of petitioners. Miao Cuihua, most likely a pseudonym, is doing what countless other migrant workers have done in the past%mdashprotest against unpaid wages. But she's skipped the queue at the petition office. Instead, Miao has created a video that not only demands she receives her quote, "blood and sweat money," but also mocks the Chinese regime's propaganda machine%mdashand it's gone viral. Above her reads "Migrant Worker Unpaid Salary News Conference" Her rambling rhetoric that follows could be lifted from any of China's scripted foreign ministry briefings. [Miao Cuihua, Unpaid Wages News Agency]: "We are regretted to hear that the official of the Bureau of Civil Affairs said 'I represent the government. When I say not to give you money, you won't get money. What can you do? We propose to peacefully, reasonably, and legally request payment. Harmony is precious. Society stability is the priority. So never appeal illegally.'" The language she uses is typical of China's well-educated elite, not a migrant worker who mixes concrete for a living. Her video has been online since May, but in the past few days it's exploded. [Xie Liusheng, Shenzhen City Rights Activist for Migrant Workers]: "It is very interesting. One Pussy Riot Member Released
One Pussy Riot member freed on appeal by a Russian court, two others have their sentences upheld. Full Story: A Moscow court has freed one member of the punk band Pussy Riot on appeal on Wednesday, but the sentences for two others were upheld. The three were convicted of hooliganism motivated by religious hatred. Cheers were heard when the Moscow city court announced the suspension of 30-year-old Yekaterina Samusevih's sentence. However, Nadezhda Tokonnikova, 22, and Maria Alyokhina, 24, had their two-year prison sentences upheld. The three were jailed in August for staging an anti-government protest at Moscow's main cathedral. Samutsevich's lawyer argued that her client had been thrown out of the cathedral before it took place. During the appeal hearing, the women had said their actions were political and not meant to offend the faithful. They said that the convictions had discredited the justice system. Family members and other defense lawyers expressed joy over Samutsevich's release, but felt the others should have been as well. This case had sparked widespread international outcry, with many governments condemning the sentences. Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev had suggested that suspended sentences would have been punishment enough. However, President Vladimir Putin defended the sentences last week as just. Defense lawyers said that they would continue the appeal process. For more news and videos visit ☛ ntdtv.org Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Add us on ...
