China Internet Sees Major Slowdown for Political Transition
According to surveys by the website Tech In Asia, the most commonly reported problem arising over Chinese internet connectivity issues is that overseas websites are loading extremely slowly%mdashand often causing disconnection. Meanwhile, Google services are also experiencing significant inaccessibility issues. Altogether, the problems are seen as part of ramped-up censorship and monitoring efforts during the 18th Communist Party Congress, the leadership transition currently underway in Beijing where Chinese regime authorities will hand off to a new generation. There have been widespread reports of extremely tight security in the capital and elsewhere, and the Internet appears to be no exception. While it's unclear exactly to what extent the Internet connection problems are connected with specific security goals, it has previously been speculated that periods of significant slowdown may be associated with heightened scrutiny of individual net use and communications. Woman's Protest in Tiananmen Square Short-Lived
A protester was apprehended in Beijing after staging an unexplained demonstration in Tiananmen Square on the first day of the Communist Party congress. A woman stood in the crowd outside the meeting venue, threw bits of paper in the air and screamed "I miss him, I really miss him, I really miss him!" Seconds later, police pounced on her and someone filming her and dragged them both away. It's unclear whether the woman was saying "I really miss HER" or "I really miss HIM" because the word in Mandarin is the same for both pronouns. Security is tight in the iconic square as more than 2000 delegates are meeting for a week-long session that will see the country's new President, Xi Jinping anointed into power. Hong Kong Activists Call for Political Reform
As the Communist Party's 18th Party Congress take place in Beijing, security forces have kept out potential protestors. But in Hong Kong, a group of activists are demanding change, on the eve of the Party meeting. Protestors marched to the Chinese regime's Liaison Office in Hong Kong. They're calling on the Communist Party make political and human rights reforms. [Lee Cheuk-Yan,Pro-Democracy Legislator]: "There are no political reforms at all. We only see regression in human rights, we only see regression in democracy. And we feel that this communist party now is only tightening up the suppression on human rights, tightening up their suppression on freedom of speech. And we are calling upon the end to one-party dictatorship." The activists called for the release of Nobel Prize winner Liu Xiaobo. Rights activist Patrick Poon said that the government must listen to the people amid growing social unrest and public anger over corruption. [Patrick Poon, Human Rights Activist]: "So we hope the government can see it's not just Liu Xiaobo making those demands. Actually people are making similar demands on Weibo every day. So we hope that people in China continue to demand the Chinese government to demand this." Outgoing president Hu Jintao addressed more than 2000 delegates gathered in Beijing's Great Hall of the People, warning that corruption threatened Communist rule, and promised political reform. During the congress Hu will hand over the reigns to the anointed successor Vice ... From: NTDTV Views: 0 0 ratings Time: 01:36 More in News & Politics

Prayers, Drums And Police Escorts -- Exam Time In Seoul
Exam time in Seoul, South Korea, is a little different from most other places... Full Story: It's the most stressful day in their lives so far... college entrance exams for high school seniors in South Korea. They study for the College Scholastic Aptitude Test for over a year... and their results will determine which college or university they get into. To alleviate stress on the day of the test, younger students cheer them on as they enter the building. For some, the pressure is just too great. For others, the only way to make it on time is with a police escort. The tests carry so much weight in Korean society, the entire city gets in on the action. The stock exchange and government offices open an hour later. Citywide traffic controls and anti-noise measures are put into place... including a ban on airplanes from taking off or landing so students can hear better during the oral portion of the exam. With pressure like this, you need a miracle. Well ahead of test day, shrines and churches are packed with parents praying for their children. This woman says she's been here everyday for nearly two months praying for good luck for her daughter. A silver lining? If students aren't happy with their results, they can retake the test as many times as they like. Whale Calf Fighting For Freedom, Left Overnight
A young humpback whale thrashing to free itself from a rope is left overnight off the coast of Australia. Full Story: Wildlife officers in Australia say attempts to free a young humpback whale entangled in a rope, were abandoned for safety reasons on Thursday. The whale calf was swimming with its mother near the coast of Sydney when the rope became caught around its tail. Tourists on a whale watching cruise saw the animal thrashing around. [Whale Watching Tourist]: "It was just going like up and down, pretty fast. Usually they dive for like 3 to 6 minutes." A spokesman for Whale Watching Sydney says this kind of thing happens often. [Jonas Liebschner, Whale Watching Sydney]: "The whale was entangled in a fish trap which we do see pretty much every day out there." The National Parks and Wildlife Service say a third whale joined the group and began showing erratic and defensive behavior, making the rescue attempt too dangerous. Removing a rope from a whale's tail is a difficult operation at the best of times. [Geoff Ross, National Parks and Wildlife Service]: "In all likelihood we'll get an aircraft up in the morning to assess the current status of the animal and its location." The Wildlife department says the weather is also a concern as a storm is heading for the area. Officers have recorded the position of the whale and will resume their operations in the morning. Cold Snap Strikes New York City
A cold snap hit the New York area on Wednesday, only days after super storm Sandy swept through the region. It started to snow during the morning, and then sleeted in the evening. Some coastal areas risk being flooded through the night. New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has asked residents in low-lying areas to evacuate for their safety. On Tuesday, people were already being evacuated from nursing homes in vulnerable areas. Outdoor grounds, parks and beaches closed at noontime on Wednesday. 91000 households are still waiting for power restoration following Hurricane Sandy, and heated shelters have been set up to support them. Some give their hopes for his next four years in office, while others simply express their happiness. Full Story: Leaders around the world show their reactions as the US election announces Barack Obama the winning candidate. Some say congratulations to the newly elected president -- others say what this means for their countries. [Murad Mohamed Ali, Muslim Brotherhood-Affiliated Freedom and Justice Party]: "We as the Freedom and Justice Party congratulate Barack Obama on his win, but we are not interested in personalities, we are interested in policies. What we are interested in is that Barack Obama stand by the promises and the fine words that he said before." [Stephen Harper, Canadian Prime Minister]: "I congratulate President Obama on his victory and his really hard fought election. We look forward to working with the president for the next four years. We have had a very good and productive working relationship." Petrol Bomb Protests: Greeks Rise Against Cuts
Greek police fire teargas and water cannon at protesters hurling petrol bombs outside parliament. Full Story: Fire bombs and stones rain down on police outside parliament as Greeks protest against spending cuts. Greek police fired teargas to disperse protesters outside parliament, where lawmakers were due to vote on a package of deeply unpopular austerity cuts on Wednesday. The spending cuts, tax hikes and labor reforms are a condition imposed by lenders to unlocking further aid for the country. As evening fell, Greeks holding flags and banners packed the main square before parliament. More than 70000 protesters poured into the streets of Athens in one of the largest rallies in months, police said. Public transport was halted, schools, banks and government offices were shut and garbage was piling up on streets on the second day of a two-day nationwide strike, called to protest against the vote. A 'no' vote could spell bankruptcy for Greece and disaster for the fragile ruling coalition. Those opposed say a 'yes' vote would deepen a five-year recession that has wiped out a fifth of the country's output and driven unemployment to a record 25 percent. The Prime Minister has said the package will be the last batch of cuts to wages and pensions. But that is cold comfort for many Greeks, whose living standards have plunged in repeated deficit-slashing schemes that have hit wage earners and retirees hardest. Mother Names Twins "Barack Obama" and "Mitt Romney"
In a town near Obama's father's rural village, newborn twins have been named Barack Obama and Mitt Romney, as other single boys are named after the US president. Full story: At a Hospital in Kisumu, western Kenya, several mothers named their babies after the US President Barack Obama. Kenya is the motherland of Barack Obama's father, and many Kenyans are proud he has become the first black US president. This young mother named her newly born twins Barrack Obama and Mitt Romney. [Millicent Awuor, Mother or Twins Obama and Romney]: "I gave birth to twins and I decided to name them after Barack Obama and Mitt Romney. I named the first twin Barack and the second one Mitt just the way Obama and Romney performed in the US election." Another mother said she wanted her baby to have successful characteristics like president Obama. [Monica Akinyi, Mother of Baby Barack Obama]: "I decided to name my child Barack Obama after the president of the US because of his achievements and the developments he has brought here." Obama enjoys widespread fame in the east African nation where his father was born and raised. Before the 2008 elections there was a beer was named after him called "senator" and after the elections, another beer named "president." A nurse at the hospital says most parents from that region prefer naming their children after famous people. She says she wasn't surprised that Mitt Romney was among the names chosen. Obama Re-elected: European Politicians React
Europe, a major American ally, has been closely watching the US election. And now, European politicians are reacting to the results. The US presidential election results have been announced and European Union politicians are weighing in. Senior members of the European Parliament delegation to the US expect little change in the US-EU bilateral relations. They speak of the overall popularity of the re-elected president among Europeans. [Derk Jan Eppink, Member of EP Delegation]: "I think not much will change with regard to Europe. I have to add, that President Obama never had a huge interest in Europe. He didn't come here very often. He's not very familiar with EU bureucracy in Brussels. But generally, I think, he regards Europe as an ally. Of course, Europeans are very happy with him, also as an idol, as a sort of political rock star." Barack Obama's experience in dealing with the financial crisis is considered an asset by the European politicians. [Niki Tzavela, Vice-Chair of EP Delegation]: "We have a US President who is knowledgeable, who knows, he is experienced, he knows the issue of the European economic crisis. So, point one: we feel more secure. Point two: he has declared during pre-election time that he is going to deal with the European crisis and get it over with, because he considers that the Europeans are taking too long." However, EU politicians expect that the economic crisis may put a strain on the bilateral cooperation in areas of security and defense ... Exiled Tibetans Hope Obama Can Address Chinese Oppression
On Tuesday night, the results of the US presidential election were announced, declaring another term for President Barack Obama. While many in the US were happy about the election results, they weren't the only ones. The spokesman for the exiled Tibetan Parliament says he thinks the election results are a good omen for the Tibetans living under Chinese rule. [Penpa Tsering, Tibetan Parliament Speaker]: "We know President Obama's position on China but now that he already was in the office for the last four years it would, I am sure, contribute towards strengthening America's position inside China or on China. And with the change of leadership in China also the US government has been very supportive for the Tibetan issue for long time and in President Obama's second term we really hope that he will be more stronger, considering the gravity of situation inside Tibet. Sixty-three people have already self-immolated and 52 have already succumbed to the injuries." A Tibetan youth activist also believes that Obama's election will be good for the US and the world. [Lobsang, Tibetan Youth Activist]: "Majority of the Tibetans are very happy because he is good for the world. He is from the liberal party and he talks about reducing war and bringing back American soldiers from the war areas where America is involved and he is also talking about bringing America's economy step by step level and bringing more jobs, these are all very good." World's Fast Robot Unveiled in China
Whether it's Ping-Pong ball or light saber fighting, there's not a lot robots can't do these days. Since 1999, the five-day China International Industry Fair is a chance to showcase the latest developments in China's industrial robotics. This year, the stand out was the "Dragon." He's the world's fastest industrial robot. It makes computer mice and according to CCTV, weighs as much as a 7-year-old child. [Li Gang, President of the ABB Robot Division in China]: "Robots were mainly used in such productive operations as welding. But now, more and more robots are applied in assembling and day-to-day living fields." It's not just work and no play though. Robots here also showed off their kung-fu skills, and took time out for a game of Ping-Pong. Who Is the 18th Party Congress Working For?
All the delegates for the Chinese regime's 18th Party Congress have arrived in Beijing. State-run CCTV reports they'll meet and discuss, quote, "issues concerning the future development of the Party and the Country". The 2270 representatives come from around China. Amongst them are teachers, rural workers and lawyers. The mix of delegates is supposed to ensure that the interests of all Chinese people are addressed, but with every single delegate being members of the Communist Party, some are doubtful whose interests the Congress really serves. [Gong Shengli, Author, Business Analyst]: "There are 2270 delegates at the 18th Party Congress. 1578 of them, or 69.5% are Communist Party officials. The meeting is run by those in power. But for China's 1.3 billion people, 1.22 billion have no say. It's just the 82 million members of the Communist Party holding their meeting, how can they say it's legitimate?" According the state-run China Economic Weekly, 145 enterprise leaders are amongst the delegates. The majority are heads of state-run companies like CNOOC and CNPC. 34 business leaders are from private enterprises, but analysts say even private entrepreneurs have to rely heavily on the Communist Party. [Hua Shuo, Political Analyst]: "Unlike their foreign counterparts, these successful private entrepreneurs from China didn't rely on hard work and market competition.
