Israel, Gaza Violence Rages After Assassination Of Hamas Military Chief
Escalation of violence between Israel and Gaza following the targeted assassination of Ahmed Jabari. Full story: Ahmed Jabari, head of Hamas' military operations, was assassinated on Wednesday in an Israel Defense Forces operation known as "Pillars of Defense". The Israel Defense Forces released footage of the assassination on YouTube. Hamas's armed wing reacted strongly, increasing mortar fire into Israel. On Thursday a rocket hit a four story building on the town of Kiryat Malachi, killing three Israelis. Hamas are also widely reported as stating that the escalation of violence has "opened the gates of Hell". The Israeli government maintain that the targeted assassination was a response to the hundreds of rockets fired into Israel in recent weeks. Airstrikes on Gaza have been intensified and Prime Minister Netanyahu has not ruled out a ground offensive. [Benjamin Netanyahu, Israeli Prime Minister]: "...we've sent a clear message to Hamas and to other terrorist organizations. And if there is a need, the Israeli Defense Forces are prepared to widen the operation. We will continue to do everything to defend our citizens." But some Israeli media are suggesting that the ramped up military offensive is also linked to the forthcoming Israeli election. The heightened violence is causing concern around the world. In particular, the Egyptian President has recalled Egypt's ambassador from Israel, and confirmed his support for the Palestinian people. [Mohamed Mursi, Egyptian ... Panetta Shows Support for General Allen During Thailand Visit
US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta reiterated his support for General John Allen in wake of the Petraeus scandal during a visit to Thailand. During a visit to Bangkok, US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta reiterated his support for General John Allen in wake of the David Petraeus scandal. Panetta is in Thailand to meet with Thai Defense Minister Sukampol Suwannthat, and said that the country remains one of the US's strongest allies in the region. [Leon Panetta, US Defense Secretary]: "(The) United States remains committed to helping the Thai military further develop its already impressive capability, so that it can assume even greater responsibility in this region." The Defense Secretary said the country would play a key role in the security and prosperity in the area. He also defended General Allen, who currently heads the US and International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan. Allen is linked to the ongoing Petraeus scandal; he reportedly sent flirtatious e-mails to Jill Kelley, the Tampa social liason that brought up the harassment case against biographer Paula Broadwell. [Leon Panetta, US Defense Secretary]: "I have tremendous confidence in General Allen and his ability and his leadership. I don't think anybody wants to jump to any conclusions that any of this will lead. But I do think that it's important for the inspector general to conduct this review so we can get to the facts to determine what exactly happened here." The heyday of Beatlemania may have been nearly 50 years ago, but The Beatles and their music remain a hot commodity. The third remastered set of 14 vinyl records just hit stores on Tuesday and Beatles fans are starting to celebrate. Double-decker tour buses with The Beatles logo ferry Beatle enthusiasts around New York and LA. One British native living in New York says she just came to celebrate a piece of British history. [Lizzie Blatt, British Beatles Fan]: "I'm British and I live here, and anything that's a slice of England, especially The Beatles, I just really wanted to come here and check it out." This Beatles fan can remember back to a time before the band was a household name. [Patricia Tyson, Beatles Fan]: "Being a teenager in 1964 when I saw them get off the plane in New York, I just knew. These guys are going to be here to stay. The music is timeless, it's so good. Any good music will stand the test of time. It will outlive you and me and future generations, as well it should." Anti-Austery Protests Across Europe
People are striking and demonstrating across Europe to protest austerity measures and tax hikes. A massive day of action kicks off across Europe. A general strike matched by planned marches in dozens of European cities has been called to protest sweeping austerity measures and crippling tax hikes. Here in Madrid protesters are already out in force - some clashing with riot police as tensions flare early on Wednesday. And in France's southern city of Marseille, around 3000 are marching against the cuts. Rail services have been cancelled here in Brussels' main train station. Other stations across the continent look the same as this - and the impact on rail service is huge. In Portugal, too, a transport strike could take a heavy toll. Lisbon's airport is preparing to shut down, while buses have been cancelled - and even the garbage collectors are staging an early morning picket. And this is just the beginning. Many thousands are expected to take to the streets of Paris, Madrid, Rome and other major cities later in the day. Santa's Secretaries Respond To Toy Requests
A post office in France celebrates celebrates 50 years of responding to children who write to Santa Claus. Full Story: Every year millions of children around the globe send letters to Santa Claus, making him one of the most written-to people in the world. For 50 years, one post office in France has been helping out, responding to hundreds of thousands of requests sent to Santa each Christmas season. Known as "Santa's secretaries", these are the only people in France authorized to open letters addressed to Santa. And even if the letter is addressed to the North Pole, it will arrive here. As long as the child writes before December 21st and provides contact details, they will always receive a reply. [Veronique Teulieres, Project Director]: "In 1962, the first year after the creation of the Secretariat, our numbers showed that we answered some 5000 letters. Last year, we answered one million four thousand, which included 140000 emails, so you see it's a great success that's been confirmed over these 50 years." Children often include pictures of the toys they want, and sometimes write poems. One little boy called Geoffrey was flexible in his request for a robot. [Muriel, Santa's Secretary]: "If you don't want your elves to make it, you can just send me the money for the robot. This is all I ask, Santa. Could you please ask your elves to make this toy for me?" This year a book called "Dear Santa" has been released, following the history of Santa over the years, and displaying ... Tyson The Dolphin Receives MRI Scan
A dolphin from Sea World in Australia's Gold Coast gets a medical scan to check for a possible head injury. Full Story: A dolphin from the Sea World Marine Park in Australia's Gold Coast, on Thursday received a medical scan to check for possible head injuries. The dolphin, named Tyson, had been responding slowly to his trainers, and showing symptoms similar to a stroke. Australia's Nine Network reports that Tyson may have been injured doing flips, or perhaps has a tumor. The dolphin could not fit his whole body into the magnetic resonance imaging machine, but the scan did cover his brain and some of his spine. Sea World staff then took Tyson back to his pool under police escort. His trainer says fighting among male dolphins is quite common. [Shari Bryden, Sea World Dolphin Trainer]: "These are all boys that we house here in this area and so he does do a lot of fighting to be that top male." Tyson was born at Sea World 16 years ago. Man Pulls Truck with One Ear
On Wednesday, a strongman in Georgia moved a semi truck weighing over eight tons. This would be a feat for any strongman, but to make it even more challenging, he pulled it with his ear. After two attempts, thirty two-year-old Lasha Pataraya set his personal record. [Lasha Pataraya, Georgian Strongman]: "I've taken up this weight to beat my previous record of 7850 kilos (17306.288 lbs.). Today I moved eight and a half tons," The 207 pound strongman has tried his skills before moving objects like an almost 10 thousand pound minivan and a 17 thousand pound helicopter. He is already planning his next record setting event two weeks from now. He wants to beat his current record of 18 thousand pounds and eventually be recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records. The Congressional report also called on Congress to check investment by Chinese state-owned companies in the US. China has already accused the US of discrimination against Chinese companies in the past, but analysts say American businesses face tougher obstacles investing in China. China's military development was also a cause for concern. Citing figures from the US Department of Defense, the Congressional panel said within the next two years China may develop the capability to launch nuclear tipped ballistic missiles from its submarine fleet. Show Show Yue Minjun Opens Show in Show
Contemporary Beijing artist Yue Minjun is opening a new exhibit in Paris today (Wednesday, Nov 14), his first major European one. [Yue Minjun, Chinese Artist ]: "The idea of the exhibition is to show the French public what a Chinese artist thinks about life." Yue is among the most famous contemporary Chinese artists, alongside names such as Ai Weiwei and Liu Xiaobo. However his art is not overtly political. His style is called Cynical Realism, a movement that came out of China after the Tiananmen Square massacre. His most famous piece, "The Execution" is often thought to be a commentary on the massacre. However he says his paintings express a common human emotion or experience, more philosophical than political. [Yue Minjun, Chinese Artist]: "I tried to express some painful ideas, some tragic ideas and also something like a comedy, something happy." In an interview with the Financial Times he said that capitalism has become the new God, replacing people's belief in the divine. He says he hopes his work will inspire reflection, and show a different perspective. The artists' signature use of laughing faces, self-portraits, and repetition has made his work internationally renowned. "The Execution" was sold at a London auction house for over $4.5 million dollars in 2007. The exhibition features 40 works from private and public collections around the world. Some of the paintings have never before been seen by the public. For more news and videos visit ☛ ntd.tv Follow us on ... From: NTDTV Views: 1 2 ratings Time: 01:55 More in News & Politics

China Criticizes US For Cyber Warfare Report
And the Chinese Foreign Ministry had more to say. After a US Congressional advisory panel earlier today released an in-depth report on Chinese cyber warfare, Spokesperson Hong Lei criticized the US for its quote, "Cold War mentality". [Hong Lei, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson]: "The relevant commission has not let go of its cold war mentality. We hope the relevant commission can discard its prejudice, respect facts, and cease interfering in China's internal politics and making statements that are harmful to China-US relations." But according to what the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission said in its report to Congress today, China is the most threatening actor in cyberspace. The annual report called on Congress to conduct an in-depth assessment of China's cyber espionage and the creation of tougher punishments for companies benefiting from industrial spying. It also said China has increasingly been targeting government, industrial, and civil sources. Chinese Ship Alleged to Carry Missile Parts from N. Korea to Syria
China's Foreign Ministry responded today (Wednesday, November 14) to recent revelations that a Chinese ship may have been used to smuggle missile part from North Korea to Syria. [Hong Lei, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson]: "China resolutely opposes the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and their delivery tools, strictly implements the UN Security Council's relevant resolutions and China's own non-proliferation export control laws and regulations." The ship, called the Xin Yan Tai, was discovered en route to Syria carrying hundreds (445) of lead pipes used for ballistic missile in May. The shipment was meant for the Syrian company Electric Parts, which has links to North Korea. South Korean officials confiscated the materials, believed to have originated in North Korea. That is according to what UN Security Council diplomats told Reuters on the condition of anonymity. It has not been confirmed whether the crew was aware of what they were transporting or if the pipes indeed came from North Korea, but if confirmed, Pyongyang will have violated a UN ban on trading military and weapons-related material. The ban has been imposed since 2006 after nuclear tests in North Korea. Syria is also under sanctions by the US and EU. However UN sanctions, or even a criticism of Syrian President Assad's brutal crackdown, have been repeatedly blocked by both China and Russia, a move British Ambassador Sir Mark Lyall Grant has called "impossible to understand." 18th Party Congress Wraps Up with New Central Committee
The Chinese Communist Party concluded its 18th Party Congress on Wednesday, offering the first clues on a new generation of leaders. The 2270 carefully vetted delegates cast their votes behind closed doors in Beijing's cavernous Great Hall of the People for the new Central Committee. The committee is a ruling council with around 200 full members and 170 or so alternate members with no voting rights. State-run Xinhua News Agency said Vice President Xi Jinping and Vice Premier Li Keqiang had both been elected to the party's Central Committee, though that result was never really in any doubt. Xi has long been expected to take over from Hu Jintao, first as party chief this week. Then, he will replace Hu as President, when the Chinese regime's rubber-stamp parliaments meets for its annual session next March. Also confirmed today was the Chief of the party's internal disciplinary body. Current Vice Premier Wang Qishan will head the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection. Wang is known for his economic and finance abilities, though his new position will see him attempt to battle corruption within the Party. The Central Committee will on Thursday announced the Politburo of a few dozen members. From that, the Politburo Standing Committee will be selected. It's the innermost ring of power with possibly seven members, reduced from the current nine. The Communist Party will also confirm on Thursday whether outgoing leader Hu Jintao will retain influence after the leadership ... From: NTDTV Views: 3 0 ratings Time: 01:35 More in News & Politics

What Foreign Media Didn't See in Beijing's Housing Tour
Foreign journalists who managed to get a visa for the 18th Party Congress were also given a tour of China's state run rental properties on Tuesday (Nov. 13). The journalists were shown a chic new apartment complex in one of Beijing's south central districts. It boasts fashionable decor and supposedly an affordable rent bill. After seeing the new apartments, foreign journalists raved about how lucky Beijing residents were. But one Beijing resident says the housing is anything but affordable. [Wu Tianli, Beijing Citizen]: "First of all, those overseas journalists don't know about the state of things in China. A college graduate only earns 1500 RMB ($241 USD) a month. If they spend 750 RMB on food, plus living expenses and a phone card, if you count all those expenses, do you think he can afford a public rental house? Beijing (people) are not happy. It's a disaster here. These public rental houses are a disaster." Another Beijing resident says the home she did have was forcefully taken by the government. [Beijing Citizen]: "For me, the development and constructions projects are all disasters. My family's private properties were all taken away and damaged. But they don't ask you. They have all kinds of court procedures, and then they come to beat you and rob you. That's the situation now. So, when you talk to me about public rental houses, I have no concept of that." Citizens Respond To End Of 18th Party Congress
The Chinese regime's once-a-decade power transfer is about over. On Wednesday, the 2270 members of the 18th Party Congress affirmed the work of outgoing leader Hu Jintao, and unanimously voted for his five year plan. For the rest of China's 1.3 billion people, their only participation was through scripted reports churned out by state-run media. Many did not share the confidence of delegates in Beijing. [Mr Wu, Tour Guide] "For the Mainland public, we don't have much confidence in these government meetings. When we talk amongst ourselves in private, or on twitter or online, we don't have a lot of hope." After the week-long meeting, Communist leaders identified several hot-button issues that could threaten its hold on power. Corruption topped this list. The economy, rule of law, and for the first time, environmental damage, were also cited as sources for concern. To address these issues, the Communist Party has pledged reform, but only through retaining ideologies of past leaders and unequivocally ruling out any democratic change. [Wang Quanping, Lawyer] "A sound political system would offer democracy to the country, and freedom to the public. A lot of citizens now believe that regardless of what the GDP is, it doesn't have much to do with them. The state can be rich, but that doesn't mean the public is. This all stems from problems with the political structure. China's incoming leaders will inherit a series of domestic and international challenges. The ruling Communist ... No Unity for China's Politburo Standing Committee: Analysts
For the past decade, China has been ruled by a small circle of communist officials. The current nine-member Politburo Standing Committee is the center of power, and on Thursday morning, the Communist Party will announce its new line up. Observers have looked to the new Standing Committee with intense interest. Many are hopeful new leaders will steer the Communist Party out of a myriad of challenges. Analysts say however the new leadership%mdashwhich could either be nine or seven people%mdashis fractured, and moving China forward is not the only thing they have in mind. [Lan Shu, Political Commentator] "Because they all want to ensure their own interests want to make sure the Communist Party survives. But either faction can propose a solution that will solve the problems faced by the Party and the Chinese society. Also, it's hard for them to compromise on balancing interests, and this leads to a messy battle. That's why they haven't been able to settle on the personnel matters." The number of Politburo Standing Committee members is not set. When Hu's predecessor Jiang Zemin stepped down a decade ago, he introduced the head of security and propaganda to the then seven member committee. Analysts say this was to ensure his persecution campaign against the Falun Gong spiritual practice would continue after his retirement. During this year's political scandal surrounding ousted official Bo Xilai, there were unconfirmed reports that current leaders Hu Jintao and Wen Jiabao sought to cut ...
