Chinese Workers the Most Stressed in the World: Regus Research
Consulting firm Regus recently released its research on stress levels of workers around the world. It says 75% of Chinese workers surveyed indicated their feelings of stress have grown in the past year--topping the global list. What's the source of the stress? According to Regus, it's job, personal finance, and bosses. A Shanghai customer service worker says his stress comes from long work hours. [Cang Yue, Shanghai Worker] "There is quite a lot of pressure in Shanghai, we have to leave early in the morning and get home late at night. There's not many places for leisure, and my pay isn't' good. I work all day and there's no time for personal development or learning about new things." One Beijing resident told NTD that growing costs of living is what's weighing them down. [Li Wei, Beijing Resident] "In just four or five years, the cost of buying a home tripled or quadrupled. We earn just about 10000 yuan per month, even for someone with good pay, if we save up everything, it'll take us three months to save up money to purchase just 35 square feet of space." Regus says Shanghai and Beijing have the most stressed workers, with 80% and 67% respectively saying they feel more stress over the past year. As a comparison, the global average is 48%. China Rattles Sabers in East China Sea
Today, China's navy, fishery administration, and marine surveillance agency conducted drills in the East China Sea. It was meant to be a show of military might but some ships involved just didn't pack as much punch as others. Chinese state-run media was quick to report the comprehensive battle-readiness of the fleet in the event of quote, "emergencies related to the protection of maritime interests and territorial sovereignty." [Shen Hao, Commander of Naval Exercise]: "This exercise is aimed at effectively safeguarding China's territorial sovereignty and maritime rights to test and enhance our joint law enforcement capability at sea." The sovereignty issue refers to China and Japan's spate over a string of uninhabited islands in the East China Sea, called Senkaku by Japan and Diaoyu by China. Japan recently attempted to purchase the islands from its private Japanese owners. Chinese opposition to Japan's claim has just quieted down after weeks of often-violent anti-Japanese riots. Many saw the lack of police presence during the riots as being tantamount to the regime's support, fanning the flames of nationalism, and creating a distraction from the heated struggles within the Communist Party over the upcoming once-in-a-decade change of leadership. The exact location of Friday's drills is unknown, but footage shows it was close to shore, far away from the actual islands. Taiwanese Man Expose Illegal Organ Trade in China
There has been mounting international pressure on the Chinese regime over allegations it is harvesting organs from prisoners of conscience. A former Taiwanese investor in China says the Taiwanese government has so far chosen to remain silent, and so this week, he decided to take out an ad to raise awareness of the issue. Shen Po-sheng's ad appeared in the Wednesday edition of Taiwan's Economic Daily. It describes claims that the Chinese Communist Party has been harvesting and selling organs from persecuted groups including Uighurs and practitioners of the Falun Gong spiritual practice. [Shen Po-sheng, Former Investor in China] "Taking organs from living people is intolerable. It's not something a human being would do. It's unimaginable a person can be killed and their organs sold for 1.2million renmibi ($190000). I cannot take this." Chinese authorities have admitted to relying on executed prisoners as a main source of organs for transplants. But rights groups, like Doctors Against Forced Organ Harvesting, says those alone cannot support the 10000 transplants that happen each year. Shen said the Tianjin Oriental Organ Transplant Center he visited to see a friend was flourishing with business. [Shen Po-sheng, Former Investor in China] "Each room had patients going in and out. There were a lot of foreigners, from Pakistan, India, Japan. I heard them speak. Each patient is matched against four so-called "donors." World's Top Wingsuit Flyers Compete in China
Daredevils hurled themselves off the top of a mountain to glide across one of China's most dramatic landscapes on Thursday. They were competing in the final of the Wingsuit Flying World Championships. Specially designed suits with flaps between the limbs allow the wearer to glide like a flying fox. Wingsuit competitors jumped from the 4600-foot peak of Tianmen mountain in Zhangjiajie, Hunan Province. Each of the eight competitors in Thursday's final followed a looping course through a valley, past a cable way, then opened their parachutes to land on a mountain road acting as the finish line. Each competitor performed the dramatic dive twice, with the fastest time winning the competition. Thursday's winner was South African Julian Bouille, who took the first wingsuit flying world record of 23.41 seconds. In second place came Norwegian Espen Fadnes with 23.55 seconds, followed by British flyer James Boole with 23.84 seconds, according to state media reports. The championship involved 15 of the world's top wingsuit flyers. Wingsuit flying is one of the world's most dangerous extreme sports, and only 20 people worldwide are qualified to take part in the competition. China Focus - Is China's Huawei a Security Threat to the US?
Is Huawei really a threat? Or is this just US protectionism masquerading as a national security issue? Huawei is the world's biggest manufacturer of telecommunications equipment. It has customers in 140 countries and its equipment is used in more than half of Europe's 4G high speed mobile phone networks. But it has come under scrutiny for its lack of corporate transparency and possible links to China's People's Liberation Army. The US Congress sees it as a national security threat. A recent report by the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence released October 8, 2012 warns that if companies like Huawei become significant players in US telecom, it poses a serious risk of cyber espionage. Air Canada Passengers Locate Missing Yacht
A missing yachtsman is rescued and brought back to land after his boat was spotted by an Air Canada passenger plane en route from Vancouver to Sydney. Full story: The New South Wales Water Police rescued Australian yachtsman Glenn Ey from the sea on Wednesday. Ey's 11-meter yacht "Streaker" was hit by a large wave that broke its mast. The sea man might have been able to do without, but then ran out of fuel. The Australian Maritime and Safety Authority (AMSA) began searching for the yacht on Tuesday morning. Ey was rescued from his broken yacht on Wednesday and brought back to Sydney where his parents were awaiting him. [Glenn Ey, Rescued Yachtsman]: "It's undeniable when a massive wave picks you up and just turns you over. It's extraordinary, the noise is like an explosion, you upside down, smashing around inside the boat filling up with water. I don't think there is anyone who would deny being concerned and you do think your number's up." An Air Canada Boeing 777 flying from Vancouver to Sydney was asked by AMSA to divert to the area where an emergency beacon was activated. [Glenn Ey, Rescued Yachtsman]: "I did hear the jet, I was down below, I did hear the jet." [Melissa Doyle, Seven Network's Breakfast Show Host]: "Apparently all the passengers, anyone that had binoculars was sort of told to look out the window and all trying to spot you." [Glenn Ey, Rescued Yachtsman]: "Yes, absolutely fabulous. I wasn't even aware of any of this until this morning, yeah. I've ... From: NTDTV Views: 180 1 ratings Time: 01:44 More in News & Politics

Ben Affleck Brings Hollywood to London BFI Film Festival
Hollywood star Ben Affleck attended the BFI London Film Festival on Wednesday (October 17) for his newly released film 'Argo'. The political thriller is based on a true story of an unusual rescue mission which took place during the 1979 Iran hostage crisis. As a third time director, Affleck reveals that it was challenging to make a film about real life events. [Ben Affleck, 'Argo' Director and Actor]: "It's very hard; you have two responsibilities%mdashyou have to make the best movie possible as a director, but you also have to maintain true to the spine of the story. So you know this story is true but there are things, there are omissions, compressions, some embellishments. I had to remember that it's not a documentary. You want to tell the trust of the story but make it really exciting and fun and funny for an audience to watch, otherwise they will never see the movie and no one will care." The 40-year-old also stars in the movie, taking on the lead role of Tony Mendez%mdashthe CIA operative who managed to sneak 6 American diplomats out of Iran during the infamous hostage crisis. [Ben Affleck, 'Argo' Director and Actor]: "Well it's funny; Tony Mendez resonates completely with me, with the exception of risking my life and being hero, the rest I can really get behind." Mendez manages to pull off his operation by disguising the diplomats as Canadian film crew making a fictitious film called "Argo." 21-Year-Old Arrested in Bomb Attempt on Fed Reserve Building
A 21-year-old Bangladeshi man was arrested in New York for attempting to launch a terror attack, allegedly attempting to detonate what he thought was a 1000-pound bomb in a van next to the New York Federal Reserve Bank, according to authorities. Quazi Mohammad Rezwanul Ahsan Nafis is facing charges of attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction and attempting to provide material support to al-Qaeda, according to the US Department of Justice. He appeared in federal court in Brooklyn on Wednesday. Nafis, who arrived in the United States in January 2012, was apprehended by a sting operation by the FBI. He allegedly sought out al-Qaeda contacts, but unknowingly had recruited an FBI agent. The FBI and NYPD monitored him as he developed his plan, according to prosecutors, eventually supplying him with 20 50-pound bags of fake explosives. The Bangladeshi national had attended Southeast Missouri State University for a semester, but moved to New York after the spring semester. He then resided in Jamaica, Queens. Massive Riot in Sichuan after Truck Driver Death
Angry scenes broke out in Luzhou, Sichuan province on Wednesday following the death of a truck driver. Up to 10000 people joined the riot which soon became violent. Clashes broke out between rioters and police, and several police cars were overturned and torched. Witnesses say the driver was beaten to death by three traffic police after an argument over where he parked his truck. [Mr Chen, Luzhou Resident] "After the traffic police came, they asked the driver to get out of the car and show his license. Then other police came and they were arguing. The police pulled the driver out of the car, and the others started to beat him. Then the driver fell on the ground. The police kicked him twice and asked him not to play dead." State-run media reports denied that the driver died from the beating. The Global Times cited a local official who said, quote "the driver died of an acute disease during the law enforcement process." Another witness said the truck driver did indeed tell police he was ill, but his plea was ignored. [Luzhou Resident] "That driver was telling the traffic police, I'm sick, please get me my medicine [from the truck]. But the police told him to keep pretending and didn't get the medicine for him, and continued to stomp on his fingers." News of the truck driver's death and the protest quickly spread online. This video shows police trying to hold back protestors while a body lies still next to a truck. The protests continued into the night. State-run Xinhua ... Chinese Question Elaborate Farewell to Former Cambodian King
Flags flew at half-mast across Beijing on Wednesday. It wasn't for the death of a national hero, and there wasn't a national disaster%mdashbut the show of respect was for former Cambodian King Norodom Sihanouk. And some Chinese are questioning why. Sihanouk passed away on Monday in Beijing, after years of battle against cancer. Top Communist Party leaders have paid tributes to Sihanouk, calling him an old friend of the Chinese people. Guangzhou resident Mr. Xu did not share that feeling, saying Sinahouk has contributed nothing to China. [Mr Xu, Guangzhou Resident] "This move by the Chinese government is not representative of the will of the Chinese people. It's just something the government is doing alone." On Wednesday, as a motorcade carried Sihanouk's body in a golden coffin to the Beijing airport, Chinese flags were flying at half-mast. The high-profile journey drew questions from netizens. Some did not think Sihanouk deserved it. This blogger writes: "Flags did not fly at half-mast after so many drowned in the Beijing floods, in the Tianjin shopping mall fire, or in the Hong Kong ferry crash. Now that Sihanouk, who's been living off taxpayers' money, dies, you lower the flag." Similar comparisons have also appeared on Chinese Internet. Sihanouk has been living in China since the 1990s. The former Cambodian King had earlier sought refuge there two decades ago, after being overthrown in a coup. He later reclaimed his throne, and enjoys considerable support from Cambodians ... China, S.Korea Express Anger over Japan's War Shrine Visit
On Thursday 67 Japanese lawmakers visited a memorial shrine in Tokyo dedicated to soldiers of World War II. Among those visiting the shrine was Shinzo Abe, former Japanese Prime Minister and current head of Japan's Liberal Democratic Party. Other notable figures included former PM, Junichiro Koizumi, and two cabinet ministers, Yuichiro Hata and Mikio Shimoji. The visit sparked outrage from Japan's Asian neighbors over what they say is a slight to history. The Yasukuni shrine memorializes those fallen during World War II, and includes some 14 recognized war criminals among its dead. Japanese soldiers were known for their brutal war tactics and for enslaving some 200-thousand Korean women as sex slaves. Japan has refused to compensate the women for the crimes, saying it settled the matter in a 1965 treaty. The treaty was a deal between governments that traded economic benefits for grievance claims. China was also a victim of Japanese brutality during World War II and is expressing its disapproval of the Japanese lawmaker's visit. At a news conference today in Beijing, China's Foreign Ministry Spokesman, Hong Lei, called on Japan to acknowledge its bloody history. He asked Japan to reflect upon its militaristic past and face up to its crimes. The visit may aggravate already strained relations Japan has with both its neighbors. China and Japan are in a headlock over some resource rich islands in the East China Sea called the Diaoyu in China and Senkaku in Japan. A similar ... Every morning she arrives at the basketball court at seven am and takes 200 shots, hardly missing a single one. But her routine doesn't end there. China's Economy Sees Seven Quarters of Slower Growth
China's economy slowed for a seventh straight quarter in the third quarter. It's the first time it's missed the government's target since the depths of the global financial crisis. The National Bureau of Statistics announced today (October 18) that GDP grew 7.4% between July and September from a year earlier. Spokesman for the Bureau blames the sluggish growth on the downturn of the global economy. [Sheng Laiyun, Spokesman, Bureau of Statistics] "Of course this is the result of the continuing underlying influence of the international situation and the international financial crisis. China's external demand is getting increasingly smaller, which is placing a lot of pressure on China's economic growth, to the extent that our rate of economic growth has continued to go down." One day before the official figures, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said the Chinese economy has stabilized though he warned that difficulties remain for the last quarter, according to state-run media. Some analysts now believe the Chinese economy has already bottomed out. But that was already the consensus earlier this year, and growth has continued to slow. Author and economist Gordon Chang had told NTD earlier that official growth figures are not reliable, and that other indicators can give a more realistic picture. For example, electricity usage growth is at around half the average rate compared to the last five years, which points at a further slowing down of the economy. China's economic slowdown ...
