Michael Jackson Leaked Emails Reveal Singer's Illness
Emails leaked by the LA Times reveal that Michael Jackson's tour promotors knew of his illness long before his ill-fated comeback tour. Full Story: Whilst millions of fans worldwide mourned the death of Michael Jackson in the summer of 2009, his passing away also sparked two huge lawsuits which are still ongoing. Both centre on AEG, the company who promoted Jackson's ill-fated comeback tour, and in particular how much they knew about the singers health problems. Now the LA Times has leaked emails where AEG executives describe Jackson as an "emotionally paralyzed mess". [Harriet Ryan, LA Times Reporter]: "This is the most in depth and unvarnished look at Michael Jackson's final months that we've seen so far, and we've seen a lot. We've seen a documentary, we've seen tons of news coverage, we've seen even a manslaughter trial where his doctor was convicted, but this is a different account of what happened and it's all contemporaneous and it's all before he died and what people were saying about him in this big company as he prepared for this comeback." Insurance company Lloyds of London argues that these emails reveal that AEG hid Jackson's health problems. They thus seek to nullify a $17.5 million policy that AEG purchased in case Jackson was not able to perform his concerts. [Harriet Ryan, LA Times Reporter]: "The emails show that there was concern about Michael Jackson's ability to pull off a comeback even before the time that the company AEG sat down with him to start ... Navy SEAL Author in Trouble Over Bin Laden Book
Trouble may be brewing for a former US Navy SEAL who penned his account of the raid that killed Osama bin Laden. Written under the pseudonym Mark Owen, No Easy Day is a memoir of the operation in Abbottabad, Pakistan that ended in Osama bin Laden's death. The author is a member of the United States Naval Special Warfare Development Group (DEVGRU), commonly known SEAL Team Six. Shortly after the book was announced, the author's true identity was revealed by Fox News to be Matt Bissonnette. Many concerns have been raised over both the content of the book and the now-revealed identity of the author. Fox News was chastised for unmasking information that could put Bissonnette and his family in danger from al Qaeda. Don Mann, a retired Navy SEAL who was not involved with the mission, believes that such a danger does exist. [Don Mann, Retired Navy SEAL]: "He's in danger for sure. Al Qaeda, they don't have a short term memory. They'll remember this forever. A SEAL took out their spiritual leader and now we know who that SEAL is." Usually, when former SEAL members write books, the Pentagon receives a copy to review before publication. Mann, who authored a book called "Inside SEAL Team Six," says the process is to protect military members. [Don Mann, Retired Navy SEAL]: "You know I was really careful not to put anything classified in. The things they redacted were a little shocking to me, to me it didn't seem sensitive to redact but it's not my call it's a review board's call and ... China's Economy Awaits Stimulus Amidst Leadership Transition
With the economic situation in China continuing to worsen and more figures highlighting the downward pressure, the wait is now not for more data, but more action. Premier Wen Jiabo had spoken of economic stimulus initiatives during his trip to Guangdong province last week, when he said, quote, "we should take targeted steps to stabilize growth." Most recent figures had raised expectation that regulators would cut the reserve ratio requirements for banks%mdashthe last one was in May. There have also been unconfirmed reports of a rebate on export taxes to help manufacturers hit by a slowdown in global demand. However, little to no action has been taken outside of talks about actions. With the upcoming 18th Party Congress in October, Chinese leaders have been preoccupied with negotiating a delicate power transition, and any major initiatives to fix the economy may have to take a back seat. Thousands of Petitioners Converge in Beijing
Nearly 5000 petitioners from around China gathered at the Beijing complaints bureau Monday. The convergence comes ahead of the Chinese Communist Party's 18th Party Congress, and petitioners say authorities are trying to clear them out of the city. Still, many are trying to lodge complaints with central authorities. Petitioners told Radio Free Asia that there were over a hundred people by 3am on Monday and that by 8am the street was full of people. Petitioners pose a challenge to the Chinese regime, especially during politically sensitive periods. Authorities perceive those who try to draw attention to their grievances in Beijing as an embarrassment to its rule, so local governments are given incentives to stop petitioners from making it to the capital. Petitioners say they are being force out of their temporary accommodation in Beijing, many are then sent to arbitrary detention back in their home town. The Sichuan-based Tianwang rights website reports that at least 10 were detained by police. Villagers Dies after Setting off Explosives in Township Government
A Chinese villager has died after detonating an explosive inside a government building in eastern Shandong province. Wheelchair-bound Qu Huaqiang set off the home-made explosive on Monday morning local time, at the Tengjia township government building. The blast killed Qu and injured six local officials. After the suicide attack, a will was circulated over China's Internet, reportedly left behind by Qu. He was a construction worker at a state-owned company. In 1994 an industrial accident left him semi-paralyzed. Qu claimed he was forced to set off the explosives, because he had not been able to get compensation from his former employer, and local officials also ignored his appeals. Tenjia township police told NTD they're still investigating the explosion. Tibetans Protest China's Defense Minister's Visits to India
Exiled Tibetans protested outside the official residence of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi today. They are against Indian officials meeting with China's Defense Minister Liang Guanglie. China is hoping to strengthen military and economic ties with its biggest Asian neighbor, something that concerns Tibetans. For many years India has been a refuge for Tibetans who have fled their own country after Chinese occupation. Chinese leaders say they have brought democracy and economic prosperity to a formerly backwards country. In the mean time Tibetans have witnessed and have experienced the destruction of their culture and homeland under Chinese communist rule. Since 1959 Tibet's spiritual and political leader, the Dalai Lama, has lived in exile in northern India. Last Wednesday he said he's looking forward to China's upcoming change of leadership. He believes the Chinese regime is softening its stance on the Tibet issue and that he will soon be able to resume talks with Chinese officials. He believes from insider information that the proposed leaders are listening to Chinese intellectuals and might reconsider China's stance on Tibet. South China Sea Tensions Underscore Clinton's Beijing Visit
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton arrived in Beijing today, beginning an official visit that's once again shadowed under a specter of looming diplomacy. Clinton's last visit coincided with the escape of blind Chinese dissident, Chen Guangcheng. This time, the Secretary of State arrived amidst a territorial dispute regarding a group of islands in the South China Sea. Today Clinton met Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi in Beijing for talks. Secretary Clinton has pledged to deliver a strong message to the Chinese regime this week as she toured Asia. The US is urging for clam as regional tensions over maritime disputes have raised broader fears of military friction. While visiting Jakarta on Monday, Clinton urged China and its Southeast Asian neighbors to move quickly on a code of conduct for the South China Sea. Many note that Clinton's words, along with the US's policy on the disputes, seem to be getting her a relatively cold reception from China's state-run press. State-run Global Times, a derivative of Communist Party mouthpiece the People's Daily, ran a critical editorial on Clinton on Tuesday. Chinese leader Hu Jintao and leader-in-waiting Xi Jinping will meet with Secretary Clinton tomorrow. Caterpillar Fungus Surpasses the Price of Gold
While not many people in the West have not heard about this fortune fungus, Caterpillar Fungus has become a commodity so valuable in China that its value has even surpassed gold. As of July this year, a website selling it wholesale quoted the price at over $40000 US dollars (260000 yuan) a kilogram. And the price has been rising. In 2003 a trader said she was buying it for US $4700 dollars a kilogram, which means the price has gone up by over 8 times in almost a decade. So what makes this fungus so valuable? While Caterpillar Fungus has not been empirically studied, it has many values in Traditional Chinese Medicine. The claims vary as to what exactly the fungus is good for but most agree that it acts as a tonic and boosts the immune system. It is also said to be good for the lungs, kidneys, arthritis, and many other maladies related to old age, including impotence. Called "Winter Worm, Summer Grass" in Tibet, this fungus comes from a deceased caterpillar. During winter the worm burrows into the ground and between April and June the fungus grows up and sticks out of the ground like a grass. It grows at midrange altitudes; mostly in Tibet and Qinghai providing seasonal work that can triple a farmer's yearly salary. India and China Agree to Improve Defense Ties
Chinese Defense Minister General Liang Guanglie met his Indian counterpart Arackaparambil Kurien Antony in New Delhi on Tuesday. The two Asian neighbors have agreed on promoting strategic and military co-operation. It 's the first visit to India by a Chinese defense minister in eight years. Liang's trip highlights the growing competition between the two emerging powers as they jostle for influence and resources across Asia. [General Liang Guanglie, Chinese Defense Minister]: (male, Chinese) "We have reached a very important consensus of further promoting the friendly, strategic and co-operative partnership between the two countries and promoting friendly exchanges and co-operation between the two armed forces." As neighbors and emerging superpowers, India and China have a complex relationship. Trade has grown rapidly but Beijing is wary of India's close ties to Washington. Memories of a border war with China half a century ago are also still fresh in New Delhi. Still, Antony was positive about the meeting. [Arackaparambil Kurien Antony, Indian Defense Minister]: "Our discussion was very fruitful. We had a detailed discussion on improving the relation between our two countries, improving the relations at the border areas and also we covered a lot on the situation in south Asia, Asia-Pacific region." Greenpeace Questions Chinese Authorities About GE Rice Tested on Children
Authorities in China's central Hunan province have denied that a group of local children have been used as guinea pigs for genetically modified rice. It comes after a report last week by environmental group Greenpeace, that 24 kids aged between six and eight in Hunan were the test subjects of a US-backed study on rice with added nutritional values. The test began back in 2008, and the results were published in the August edition of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. The study concluded that tested strain, dubbed "Golden Rice, was as effective as pure beta carotene oil at providing vitamin A to children. Hengyang city, where the testing is said to have taken place, investigated the claims by Greenpeace. State-run media reported on Monday that the deputy director of the Hunan Center for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed there was a project involving children in 2008, but it did not involve genetically modified rice.
