David Blaine Finishes 72-Hour Electric Endurance Event
David Blaine was helped out of a Tesla coil, after spending 72 hours as the center of one. Full Story: David Blaine completed a 72 hour endurance performance on Monday (October 8), certainly his most electrifying event yet. For three days, the famed illusionist was the center of a one million-volt Tesla coil at the Hudson River Park in New York City. Dressed in a 20-pound chain-mail suit and surrounded by an electrical storm, Blaine was unable to eat or sleep for the duration of the event. He also wore noise-cancelling earphones, allowing Blaine to speak with fans throughout the event. After being helped down, the entertainer was helped into an ambulance to check his health. After saying some thank yous to the crowd, he said he knows what he wants to do next. [David Blaine, Illusionist]: "I feel like taking a nice long nap, after my shower." A natural reaction after what he says will be his last endurance stunt. China Denies US Claims of Cyber Misconduct
Chinese media have slammed a US congressional report that named China's two largest telecom gear makers as major security threats to the US. Following a year-long investigation, the US House Intelligence Committee warned on Monday that Huawei Technologies and ZTE Corp carried close ties with the Chinese regime, and they could open up US telecom infrastructure to spying from China. In response, Chinese state-run Xinhua News Agency accused the US of protectionism, saying the Committee's findings were, quote, "totally groundless." Huawei, meanwhile, called the report "China bashing." Still, Representative Mike Rogers who chairs the Committee has cautioned US telecom companies against using equipment made by Huawei and ZTE. [Mike Rogers, House Intelligence Committee Chairman] "Huawei and ZTE seek to expand in the United States, but as a result of our investigation, we do not have the confidence these two companies, with their ties to the Chinese government can be entrusted with infrastructure of such critical importance." Representative Rogers says US companies need to have security in mind when engaging the two Chinese firms. [Mike Rogers, House Intelligence Committee Chairman] Again, our advice to the private sector is this: your obligation is to consider larger data protection and national security implications of your business decisions and we would not advise doing business with these two companies." Xinhua rebuffed the Congressional report as an example of a Cold War ... From: NTDTV Views: 0 5 ratings Time: 01:36 More in News & Politics

Breast-feeding the twins for a whole month has helped them gain weight and improve their immune system. The mother panda feeds her cubs four to five times a day and has to eat extra bamboo to keep her supply full. US-Philippines Military Exercises Not Aimed at China
The US and Philippines started joint naval exercises today north of Manilla. The exercises were to improve cooperation between the defense partners and prepare their troops for joint action. This is the 30th year the US and Philippines have held joint military drills, but some analysts still see it as a balance of power against China. Since the Obama administration shifted its attention to the Asia Pacific region, many see it as a move to contain potential unilateral attacks by the Chinese regime. Both the Philippines and the US deny that the exercises are politically motivated. [Samuel Mongcal, Philippine Marines Commanding Officer]: "I think you heard it a thousand times, but we are here to train and develop the capability, as far as humanitarian assistance and disaster response is prevalent in our case. We are hoping we can achieve some confidence in working together." The Philippines has sought US support for its territorial dispute with China over the Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea. A face-off this year between the two countries has created tensions, with the Philippines filing a diplomatic protest against the Chinese regime. The US has been adamant that it will not get involved in territorial conflicts between China and its Asian neighbors. However, it does have an invested interest in keeping trade routes clear and commerce flowing. The Philippines is situated amidst some of the world's busiest shipping lanes. Turkey-Syria Border Tension Continues
Tension remains high between Turkey and Syria as cross-border shelling continues. Full Story: The Turkish-Syrian border remains calm on Tuesday morning. But Turkey's military have maintained a high security presence, following several Syrian mortar strikes over the past week. In this normally busy border town streets are deserted and shops closed. On Wednesday a mortar fired from Syria struck a house and killed 5 people. [Unnamed Resident, Border Town of Akcakale]: "We want this to end as soon as possible. Hundreds of people usually sit here every day, but as you can see now there is no one, no shops are open, people just stay in their homes." In response, Turkey has bombed Syrian military targets, killing several Syrian soldiers. Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan says Turkey does not want war, but warned Syria not to test its resolve. The Syrian regime is battling rebels who control land close to the Turkish border, and several mortar strikes have crossed into Turkey. The continued exchanges are the most serious cross-border violence since the revolt against President Assad began in March last year. Turkey was once an ally of Assad's, but turned against him after his violent response to the uprising. Since them Turkey has led calls for Assad to quit, and has granted sanctuary to rebel leaders. Venezuelans Voting In New Orleans Disappointed With Chavez Victory
Thousands of Venezuelans travel to New Orleans to vote, but most leave disappointed as Chavez is re-elected. Full Story: Thousands of Venezuelans who live in the United States line up in New Orleans on Sunday, to vote in Venezuela's presidential election. Most expat Venezuelans live in and around Miami, but President Hugo Chavez closed Venezuela's consulate in Miami earlier this year. Around 7000 voters made the long journey to New Orleans to cast their ballot. [Carlos Alves Fernandez, Voter from Coral Springs, Florida]: "Unfortunately, the Venezuelan consulate in Miami was closed by the president for whichever reasons he had in mind, whether (or not) these were diplomatic reasons, so it was very important for this electoral process to have polling stations opened so that we could exercise our right to vote, otherwise the action would have been an impediment to allow us to exercise our right. I believe it is the responsibility of the government that today many people have not had the chance to vote." The expatriate community in the United States is overwhelmingly against the incumbent President Chavez - only 2 percent of Venezuelans in Miami voted for him in the 2006 elections. The number of Venezuelans in America is steadily increasing, with many middle- and upper-class Venezuelans emigrating, to escape rising crime and shrinking job opportunities back home. Many celebrate being able to vote. [Ileana Avendano, Voter from Cape Coral, Florida]: "Today is a celebration ... From: NTDTV Views: 17 3 ratings Time: 01:48 More in News & Politics

Nobel Prize Stirs Controversy
"The Nobel Assembly and the Karolinska Institute have today decided to award the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2012 jointly to John B. Gurdon and Shinya Yamanaka "for the discovery that mature cells can be reprogrammed to become pluripotent." This year's Nobel Prize is a controversial one and it is rewarded to scientist in the field of stem cell research. John B. Gurdon discovered in the early sixties that he could take an egg cell on a frog and replace the immature cell nucleus with a mature frog intestinal cell nucleus. The modified egg cell grew into a normal tadpole, and the DNA of the mature cell still contained all the information required to grow into all cells of the frog. [G%oumlran Hansson, Secretary Nobel Assembly]: "John Gourdon made a remarkable discovery fifty years ago. That the nucleus of a mature cell contains all the information needed to build any information needed to build any cell in the body." Forty years later in 2006, Shinya Yamanaka discovered that one can reprogram mature stem cells in mice to become stem cells that can become any cell type in the body. [Thomas Perlmann, Professor Karolinska Institute]: "We think this an absolutely fantastic discovery and it has two important components. And one is and this is really important for us it's importance for the basic understanding of how cells become specialist and help us to understand really basic biology and medicine." These stem cells appear to be the equivalent of embryonic stem cells. Stem ... From: NTDTV Views: 133 5 ratings Time: 02:11 More in News & Politics

Turkish President Abdullah Gul said that the "worst-case scenarios" were happening in Syria, and urged for the international community to act. [Abdullah Gul, Turkish President]: "The worst case scenario is taking place in Syria, and the Syrian people are really suffering because of this. From time to time this affects us, we lost some of our citizens. Our government is in constant consultation with the Turkish military. Whatever is needed is being done immediately as you see, and it will continue to be done from now on too." It was also the sixth consecutive day were Turkish forces launched a retaliatory strike on Syria. A mortar, launched from Syria, landed in the Turkish countryside. Local villagers showed journalists the blast site. Shell casings could be seen in the middle of the cotton field in the district of Hacipasa. [Abdullah Gul, Turkish President]: "We can't expect the situation in Syria to carry on like this. One day for sure there will be a change, but our wish is that this happens before Syria demolishes itself and more blood is shed, and we wish the international community would act more efficiently." NATO has already thrown its full support behind Turkey in the matter. The NATO member was once a close ally of Syrian President Assad, but that allegiance fell apart after Assad's violent crackdown on its protests that began last ...
