Shark-Net-Tangled Whale Rescued in Australia
A juvenile humpback whale is freed after becoming tangled in a shark net off Australia's Gold Coast. Full story: In a marine drama on Thursday, a 22-foot whale gets caught in a net off the gold Coast of Australia. The humpback whale got ensnared in a shark net, used to keep sharks away from the beach. After a 40-minute struggle, a crew from the Department of Fisheries managed to untangle the whale, freeing it from its mesh confinement. Footage captured by an Australian network showed the whale swimming away unhindered after it was freed. Shark nets are common in Australian waters, with most placed just over a quarter mile from the beach. Nets usually go down about 30 feet down to keep sharks from getting too close. Chileans Recharge their Batteries at Nap Hotel
When your head's going to hit the desk and another cup of coffee just won't cut it, this nap hotel in downtown Santiago gives you the energy you need to finish out your 9 to 5. 'Mi Espacio'%mdashSpanish for 'My Space'%mdashis offering power naps, massages, and other therapies, so Chileans can relax and recharge during their workday. It's a first of its kind in the capital, and owner Karin Shirmer says the concept is catching on. [Karin Shirmer, Owner, Mi Espacio]: "The second week, 7 people came and now we get more than 10 people a day. And honestly, the people have welcomed it and are really happy." Naps can last between 30 and 45 minutes, offering just enough shut-eye to give a boost of energy, but not long enough to wake up in a sleepy daze. A 30 minute snooze costs just over $10 US dollars. Other nap hotels have popped up in the US, Japan, Australia, and Argentina, and they're proving popular. Some researchers say that a short afternoon nap can help workers increase their productivity. It can also have health benefits%mdashstudies show it can decrease stress and improve brain and heart functioning. And in an area that was recently struck by a series of earthquakes that had already claimed 80 lives. The children were at school during an eight day national holiday, making up for classes missed during the earthquakes, state-run China News Service reported. CY Leung Criticized After Beijing Official Talks in Crash Aftermath
At noon on Thursday, Hong Kong officials initiated a period of silence to mourn those lost in a boat accident on Monday. The collision killed 38 people and injured at least 100. Hong Kong Chief Executive, Leung Chun-ying came to a condolence point in Wanchai to mourn with locals. The newly appointed Hong Kong leader has been criticized for appearing with a senior Chinese official in the aftermath of Monday's accident. Before Leung took office this year, he was called out for having close ties with authorities in Beijing. On Monday, just hours after the collision, Leung appeared with the Deputy Director of Beijing's Central Liaison Office, Li Gang. Li spoke at a press inquiry at the hospital where victims were taken. He offered his condolences and the help of Guangdong province, which borders Hong Kong. That gesture was not received well by Hong Kong residents. It is unusual for Mainland officials to be given the limelight on an issue that's local to Hong Kong. Authorities in China are also perceived as being unnaturally supportive during national tragedies, but negligent in every day affairs. Leung Chun-ying has defended Li's appearance, saying he went on his own. Hong Kong citizens have become increasingly wary of Mainland China's influence. Over the summer, a proposed national education course brought mass protests. Opponents labeled the primary school course as "brainwash", saying it was a veiled attempt by the Hong Kong government to portray China's communist regime ... Bo Xilai's "Prison" Revealed
Last week, ousted Chinese Communist Party politician Bo Xilai was expelled from the Party, and it was announced that he would be criminally investigated. Yet official media was silent about where the trial would take place, and where Bo himself was. He disappeared into the custody of central authorities in March, after the dawning of a complex scandal that's still unfolding. So far, it involves murder, massive corruption, and "inappropriate sexual relationships", plus other crimes. So where is Bo exactly? Hong Kong-based media Mingpao has reported this week that he is housed at the Kuangou Guest House of Huairou district, about 30 miles northeast of Beijing. It's essentially a secluded courtyard-style dwelling. Mingpao says once Bo is criminally charged, he could be transferred to Qincheng Prison, where his wife Gu Kailai is also believed to be imprisoned. A former detainee at Qincheng Prison has told Bloomberg BusinessWeek that senior officials held there live in relative comfort. Their cells are large and equipped with a writing desk, bathroom, and washing machine, and some can read and watch TV on a daily basis. Mainland Chinese human rights lawyer Li Xiangyang says this is a far cry from how dissidents or "common folk" are treated. [Li Xiangyang, Chinese Human Rights Lawyer]: "Qincheng Prison is as luxurious as a five-star hotel. It is a retreat for sacked senior officials who still get to enjoy special treatment, personal security, and entertainment facilities." Bo ... The World of Dinosaurs Settles on the Slopes of Kyiv Ukraine
"The World of Dinosaurs" exhibition has toured across the European Union and arrived in Ukraine. The prehistoric dinosaurs have already receiving extraordinary interest from more than 10 million visitors. Here's more. Lttle Misha is one of the first visitors. He learned about dinosaurs from his father. [Misha, Young Visitor]: (male, Russian): "I know one thing - my dad told me a bedtime story; when a comet fell on the land where dinosaurs lived, it got cold straight away. And the dinosaurs all died." Inspired 20 years ago by his son's interest in dinosaurs, Wolfgang Klinger created the "World of Dinosaurs" touring exhibit. German scientists constructed 25 prehistoric reptiles. [Wolfgang Klinger, Exhibition Organizer]: (male, English) "They were all the heroes of my son, because he was the only one in school who could say, 'my father has 25 dinosaurs'." Models continue to be refined according to the latest scientific information. Now the dinosaurs are realistic in color, and often even in size. Diplodocus stands in full size - almost 30 meters or 98 feet high. Scientists say Diplodocus had 2 brains, one in the skull and the other at the end of its tail ridge, to control the tail and limbs. Apatozavr had the same adaptation. The exhibition guide says Apatozavr's brain was no larger than a ping-pong ball, and the dinosaur slept standing up. [Tatiana Ogorodnik, Guide]: (female, Ukrainian) "Apatozavr's knees had 'locks' that closed the legs at night, so the dinosaur did not ... In zoos across the country, people are getting a look at some rare and exotic animals, including an albino kangaroo, flamingos, baby Asian elephants, and a few standup bears. And of course, it was pandemonium outside the panda cages. [Chinese tourist]: "I came with my family and friends to the zoo in order to relax and let our kids see the animals. We could rarely come because we are busy with work on most days." China's Major Highways Turn into Massive Parking Lots
China's national highways have been turned into virtual parking lots with the onset of the Mid Autumn Festival and National Day holidays. For the first time in a decade, all tolls are being waved, causing maddening amounts of congestion. The eight-day Golden Week started Sunday, and drivers report that they are traveling three miles an hour at times on 24 motorways across 16 provinces. Thirteen percent more people are hitting the roads as a result. Photos posted on the microblog Sina Weibo show people doing anything they can to pass the time. Stretching, talking a walk, doing pushups or even playing tennis! The Shanghai Morning Post reported it took one motorist over ten hours to drive 186 miles. The British newspaper The Telegraph reported that in 2010, the longest traffic jam ever stretched 60 miles with people leaving from Beijing to Inner Mongolia. It reported that motorists traveled a mere two miles a day during the height of that jam. Thousands of Tourists Trapped in Popular Chinese Mountain
This week's long holiday in China drew out millions of visitors to tourist spots around the country. Vacationing turned sour though for more than ten thousand tourists to Huashan Mountain in China's northwest Shaanxi province. They became trapped on Tuesday, and many had to trek for miles to make it out. The cold and slippery conditions made the exit difficult for some. On Tuesday evening, calls for help began emerging on China's microblog. This post says: "There are a lot of elderly and children, there are no street lights, it's very cold, come and save them." Others forwarded the calls for help. [Chinese netizen] "After I saw this I felt it was very serious. Huashan is very steep, and a lot of people can't get down. I was very worried so I used my microblog account to provide information." Local media reported afterwards that shuttles were unable to get up the mountain because tourists asking for refunds refused to leave. But netizens say the blockage was because management could not handle the influx of visitors. Scuffles broke out between agitated tourists and management staff, and police had to be called in. Ticketing limitations have now been put in place to control the number of visitors in the mountain. State-run Xinhua reported today more than 6 million visitors have flocked to the country's 119 scenic spots this year, a 30% increase from last. The Secret to Supermarket Success in China
China's grocery stores have stiff competition. Fresh food markets are a facet of Chinese culture and fresh, cheap food straight from the farm is the standard at most farmers markets. But finding the same great quality deals is not what China's supermarkets are known for. That may be why big supermarkets like Walmart and Carrefour are struggling to make a profit. But for Taiwan-based company RT-Mart, profits are booming. [Philip Smiley, Kantar Retail, Asia Pacific, CEO]: "I think it's probably easier to say what's right with RT Mart than what's wrong with WalMart. We know that in China Fresh food drives traffic to stores. People go daily to buy their meat, poultry and seafood. RT Mart does the best job of that in the market in terms of product quality, display, staff, cleanliness." One thing RT Mart understands is shoppers' culture. The store gets its produce straight from the source and retains the feel of a Chinese wet market. [Yao Jinghua, Customer]: "The eggs here are fresh because the turnover is fast and the prices are slightly cheaper than the wet market." The other concept RT Mart has mastered is good prices. In an interview with Common Wealth Magazine, CEO Peter Huang says, "Pricing decisions are at the root of managing and managing depends on your will." And that helps shopper make their decisions. [Yao Jinghua, Customer]: "I don't like Wal-Mart because it's not convenient. Their products are good, but it's relatively expensive. Yeah, more expensive. Here you can ... Chinese Banks Boycott Finance Meetings in Japan
Tension between China and Japan over territorial waters in the East China Sea is now being reflected in the international finance arena. The Wall Street Journal reported that several Chinese banks have pulled out of the annual World Bank and International Monetary Fund meeting to be held in Tokyo next week. Some banks are also boycotting Sibos, another big finance industry meeting to be held in Osaka at the end of the month. The banks have not given any reasons for their last minute withdrawals, but relations between China and Japan have soured in recent months as their spats over the Diaoyu, or Senkaku Islands escalated. Some analysts say China's withdrawals from such important global economic-finance forums over regional squabbling may be signs that China is not yet ready for the bigger role it has long sought in the World Bank and IMF. ASEAN Maritime Forum Opens in Manila - China Sea Dispute On Agenda
Diplomats and security experts tackle security and regional co-operation at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) third maritime forum in Manila, which opened on Wednesday. Though the meeting focused on protecting marine resources and securing trade routes, the territorial disputes in the South China Sea became a hot topic. Four ASEAN members - Brunei, Malaysia, Philippines and Vietnam - all claim parts of the South China Sea, setting them against China which claims sovereignty over much of the region. Philippines Vice-president, the forum's keynote speaker is optimistic about a peaceful solution. [Jejomar Binay, Philippines Vice President, Forum Keynote Speaker]: "Isn't it that there is a new opening, isn't it that the incoming president (of China) is saying, he is implying, that they are also supporting a peaceful and diplomatic solution to the problem?" Chinese President-in-waiting Xi Jinping last month said China was committed to resolving territorial differences with its neighbors through peaceful, friendly relations. Australian security expert Professor Sam Bateman says potential risks are higher in the dispute between China and Japan. [Professor Sam Bateman, Australian Ocean Resources and Security Expert]: "The situation over the Senkaku/Diaoyu islands is potentially more serious, because you've got bilateral, you've got two big countries, sort of sabre-rattling at each other." Who Packed A Punch In The First US Presidential Debate?
Voters in Washington, New York and LA respond to the first US presidential debate between Obama and Romney. Full Story: Americans tuned in to the first presidential debate on Wednesday night, as Barack Obama and Mitt Romney went head to head. At a bar in Washington, revellers gathered for a debate party. Some even partook in a game of bingo, marking off scorecards where popular talking points were mentioned. [Kelly Archung]: "I wasn't actually planning on hearing anything from Mitt Romney that was actually articulated as far as policies are concerned because I think in his track record he just lacks in that but I think tonight, like, he actually stepped up his game a little bit but not enough of what he needed to do." It was a more sober affair at this New York college, where viewers found both candidates impressive. But as to who came out on top, the reaction was mixed. [Michael Senders, Student]: "I was very impressed by Governor Romney's performance, specifically because although it might be criticized by many people I liked his aggressive approach and how he attacked a lot of the ideas and a lot of the topics that were to be discussed." [Camille O'Brien, Student]: "President Obama, he did - he is always a great speaker, I think he could have done better tonight honestly. I am a fan of him, I like a lot of his policies, he seemed nervous for some reason and almost let some questions threw him off, and Mitt Romney seemed to throw him off as well."
