Mini Lineups for New iPad Mini in DC
Apple fans brave cold temperatures to line up outside an Apple store in Washington to get their hands on the new iPad mini, but the device attracted smaller crowds than at the company's previous global rollouts. Full story: Par for the course at Apple product launches, fans lined up to get the new iPad mini at the Apple store in Washington DC on Friday. But this time, the crowd size was smaller than usual. The almost 8-inch tablet is a bit more pricey than rival gadgets, which could explain the small crowd compared to previous Apple launches. [Gabriel Perez Florentino, Apple Customer]: "I am from Brazil, we took a big trip, me and my father to come here to the launch. We got very excited when we heard about it and it's - I am an Apple addict, I buy every product they launch and it's very good to be here." When Hurricane Sandy delayed this tourist's flight back to the Philippines, she took advantage of the delay get the mini before her compatriots. [Vanessa Bunag, Apple Customer]: "Well we are very excited, the fact that we will be the first Filipinos who will get the iPad mini makes us so happy and excited." The iPad mini has won mostly positive reviews, though some say the screen is inferior to rivals' and the price tag a bit too steep. The new tablet essentially replicates most of the features of its full-sized sibling, but in a much smaller package. Microsoft's 10-inch Surface tablet, powered by the new Windows 8 software, just went on sale in October. The iPad mini is ... From: NTDTV Views: 190 5 ratings Time: 01:31 More in Science & Technology

Hu Jia Urges US to Release Information on Organ Harvesting in China
Renowned Chinese rights activist Hu Jia has been forced to leave Beijing ahead of the Communist Party's 18th Party Congress next week. Still, he continues to speak out against the rights abuses being committed by Chinese authorities. Currently in Anhui province, Hu Jia has condemned the Chinese regime over allegations that it has been pillaging and selling organs from political prisoners. [Hu Jia, Chinese Rights Activist] "Forced organ harvesting from living people... It really has gone above and beyond what humanity can tolerate, it's akin to the devil. I really believe so." The issue of forced organ harvesting has gained increasing global attention this year. In February, after Chinese official Wang Lijun fled to the US consulate, there were unconfirmed reports that he had provided evidence to US officials about the Chinese regime killing adherents of the Falun Gong spiritual practice for their organs. In October, 106 members of US Congress signed a joint letter asking the State Department to release any information it might have on these allegations. Hu Jia says these developments in the US are significant. [Hu Jia, Chinese Rights Activist] "I believe US congress members are very cautious, and would not go along with something lightly, because it affects their reputation and standing to their constituents. I believe the international community does have hard evidence on [the allegations] and that's why it's caused such a stir." Hu Jia says with the upcoming ... Protests Get Violent Over Vote-Rigging in Ukraine
Protests turn violent in parts of Ukraine over allegations of vote-rigging in favor of incumbent President Viktor Yanukovich's party. Ukrainian opposition parties accused Yanukovich's Party of the Regions of "stealing" several parliamentary seats as the vote count from Sunday's election neared completion on Friday. In some districts, prolonged vote-counting triggered accusations of rigging and led to scuffles.Riot police used tear gas at a district election commission in the town of Pervomaisk on Thursday night, local media reported. The opposition says initial vote results were reviewed in favour of a Regions candidate. The interior ministry said in a statement police had been called in to help bailiffs retrieve vote counts submitted by individual polling stations in line with a court ruling. A local television channel reported that the police was guarding the district election commission while protesters were refusing to leave. Carrier Pigeon from WWII Found in Chimney
British man finds carrier pigeon skeleton in his fireplace with a canister attached to the leg containing an encrypted WW2 message. Sarah Sheffer reports. The remains of a World War II carrier pigeon, found during renovations at a southern England home. David Martin found the bird when he was cleaning out a Victorian fireplace he's unearthed. [David Martin, Discoverer, WWII Carrier Pigeon]: "As we pulled them out, bits of bird came out with it the breast bone first, then the head and the leg with an aluminium ring round it, obviously a racing pigeon, then we found a red capsule attached to it and I said 'I wonder if it's aa secret message' and it was. After we took the spool off there was a cigarette paper with coded writing on it." Martin's home in Surrey is close to a hotel where Britain's General Montgomery planned the D-Day invasion of France. World War II experts are now trying to decipher the message. Sent by a Sergeant W. Stott, the message was meant to reach a mysterious 'X02' - a possible code name for 'Bomber Command'. Homing pigeons were often used by Allied forces to send messages during World War II. Flying at speeds of up to 80 kilometres per hour, pigeons can travel distances of up to 1000 kilometres. Full story: Four days after Hurricane Sandy hit the east coast , New York City is finally starting to come to life. Subways North of 34th street have begun operating as usual with complimentary rides for all passengers. New York City's Mayor asked all vehicles coming into the city to carry at least three passengers and encouraged commuters to take public transit to keep down congestion. Busses started limited service starting Tuesday at 5 pm and are now serving all of Northern Manhattan. One commuter says that public transportation is a relief after walking to and from work. Many gas stations in New York and New Jersey remain closed due to lack of fuel and power outages. Lines for gas are long with some reporting two hour waits. La Guardia airport resumed limited service today just behind Newark and JFK airports which started limited service on Wednesday. This traveler says the timing could not have been better. [Trevor Ewen, Pasenger]: "Really happy. I think we are just in time. Cavernous Surge Tank Protects Tokyo From Floods
A massive underground surge tank protects Tokyo from the yearly onslaughts of typhoons and storms, many similar in force to Hurricane Sandy. Full Story: In the low-lying suburbs of Tokyo, an underground pump station protects the capital from flooding. Japan's land ministry says it is the world's current largest solution to flooding. Here is a pump station for the Tokyo Metropolitan Floodway, the end point of a 3.7 mile (6 kilometer) long network of tunnels, capable of channeling away storm waters at the rate of 5 Olympic-size swimming pools every minute. The aim is to prevent scenes like those in New York this week, when Hurricane Sandy caused widespread flooding across parts of the city. A study of several towns in Tokyo's low-lying northern suburbs before and after the water system was completed in 2006, shows positive results. [Takashi Komiyama, Pump Station Chief]: "The floodway is directly protecting people from floods, the results are there. The damage is down by about two-thirds, in terms of both the number of homes that get flooded and the areas that are impacted." The jewel of the system is a cavernous surge tank measuring 580 feet (177 meters) long, 256 feet (78 meters) wide and 59 feet (18 meters) high. As smaller rivers rise during typhoons, the water is diverted into the tank through 3.9 miles (6.3 kilometres) of tunnels at a maximum rate of 260 cubic yards (200 cubic meters) every second. From there, the water is slowly pumped into the Edo River, a waterway ... From: NTDTV Views: 280 11 ratings Time: 02:26 More in News & Politics

Chinese Speculate on Upcoming Leader, Xi Jinping
On November 8, China's Vice President Xi Jinping is set to take over as the new leader of the Communist Party. Xi will replace outgoing General Secretary Hu Jintao at the 18th Party Congress. Unlike in most democratic countries, Chinese leaders are usually shrouded in secrecy, with the public knowing little about them. The Party's careful control of information on Xi means that even Chinese who follow politics closely know next to nothing about his opinions, or what kind of a leader he might be. [Zhai Ling, Lawyer]: "I don't know much about him, but I think he should be the next leader. I think it will be better than before. Because now each generation is better than the last." [Ke Yaohong, Financial Worker]: "I think in terms of overall direction, he should be pretty similar to President Hu. But in terms of style, I think he will be a bit tougher. That's from my own personal speculation, and from some discussion online." Born in Shaanxi Province, 59-year-old Xi Jinping is the son of former vice premier Xi Zhongxun. That makes him a "princeling" of the Communist Party%mdashone of the privileged sons and daughters of China's incumbent, retired, or deceased leaders. Xi watched his father be purged from power before the 1966 to '76 Cultural Revolution. Xi himself spent years during the chaos in the hard-scrabble countryside before entering university. 'Pambassador' Finalists Show Panda Training Toys
Sixteen finalists in the running to become Pambassadors, or professional giant panda caretakers, show off unique panda training toys of their own design. Full Story: Sixteen young finalists are in the running to become Pambassadors, or professional giant panda caretakers. The shortlisted competitors have submitted their designs and created toys for the endangered species at southwest China's Chengdu Panda Base. Breeders at the panda base often create toys with food put inside in order to train the animal to work for their food. This practice, which helps the animal strengthen attributes they usually gain in the wild, was passed onto the competition finalists on Tuesday. During the contest's final round, the sixteen youths were required to come out with their own designs for an educational feeder within an hour with the help of instructors and breeders. American contestant Melissa Katz, a hockey coach, designed her toy to improve the pandas' coordination and movement. [Melissa Katz, American Pambassador Finalist]: "It could be challengeable a little bit to get their food and I guess there is entertainment as well." Chinese finalist Cen Yinrong said that the inspiration for her toy creation came from a traditional Chinese musical instrument, the Bianzhong. She used four flexible tubes that the giant pandas could play with to obtain food. [Cen Yinrong, Chinese Pambassador Finalist]: "The giant pandas will try hard to get the food inside of the tube if tiny food pieces get ... Baby Panda Shows New Strut And New Teeth
This little giant panda cub at the San Diego Zoo is showing great signs of growth. At just a little over three months the baby panda is starting to walk. Although still a little clumsy, he's making progress. [Tracy Clippinger, Senior Veterinarian, San Diego Zoo]: (English) "Over the past week, he gained 600 grams and he's right on the weight curve, so he's gaining just fine. His body condition feels good. He's a little above average in the body condition. He has nice fat stores over his spine, his belly is good and full, so he's doing great." The baby panda cub is getting a routine checkup to make sure his development is on track. And his caretaker says things are looking good. [Tracy Clippinger, Senior Veterinarian, San Diego Zoo]: (English) "So the exciting thing is that today is he pushing up on all his fronts and he's also pushing up on his back legs. And so his belly is clearing the ground and he's starting to move and follow wherever his front legs go with his back legs. So he's beyond crawling, but not all the way walking right now." The little panda is also showing signs of another breakthrough. After poking around, his caretakers discover the first signs of baby teeth poking out from his gums. Giant Mussels Rescued From Costa Concordia Wreck
Scientists intervene to protect rare giant mussels found under the wreck of the capsized cruise ship Costa Concordia. Full Story: On the surface, salvage workers are still extracting the cruise ship Costa Concordia, which ran aground off Italy in January. Below the surface, scientists working at the site say the ship recently revealed something unexpected. Rare giant mussels were discovered after plants shaded by the capsized ship died. Scientists are now working to remove more than 200 specimens to protect them from planned removal works. The giant mussels, of the Pinna Nobilis species, used to be common in the Mediterranean but their population has shrunk in the last decade due to over-hunting and environmental changes. A team monitoring the environmental impact of the wreck removal process found the mussels by chance. Marine Biologist, Andrea Belluscio, who is in charge of environmental monitoring of the removal works, says the mussels were at risk of being destroyed and were a lucky find. [Andrea Belluscio, Marine Biologist]: "We found the Pinna Nobilis around the ship totally by chance. We were mapping out a stretch of Neptune Grass, assessing the extent of the damage caused by the Concordia accident, and in an area where Neptune Grass has died due to the shade cast by the wreck a large number of these animals, about 200 of them, came to light." The removal of the ship will take over one year, and will require the construction of an underwater platform to lift the ... From: NTDTV Views: 847 5 ratings Time: 02:40 More in Pets & Animals

US Clinton Calls to Overhaul Syria Opposition Group
The US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, calls for a major overhaul of Syria's opposition, asking to move beyond the Syrian National Council. Full Story: The United States called on Wednesday for a major overhaul of Syria's beleaguered opposition, saying it was time to move beyond the Syrian National Council (SNC). [Hillary Clinton, US Secretary of State]: "There needs to be an opposition leadership structure that is dedicated to representing and protecting all Syrians. It is not a secret that many inside Syria are worried about what comes next. They have no love lost for the Assad regime but they worry and rightly so about the future and so there needs to be an opposition that can speak to every segment and every geographic part of Syria." Speaking at a news conference while meeting with the Croatian President Ivo Josipovic, Clinton also said, Syrian opposition talks in Qatar next week should lead to a broader coalition, that would speak out strongly against any extremists' efforts in hijacking the Syrian revolution. [Hillary Clinton, US Secretary of State]: "The Arab League sponsored meetings starting in Doha next week will be an important next step... We've made it clear that the SNC can no longer be viewed as the visible leader of the opposition. They can be part of a larger opposition, but that opposition must include people from inside Syria and others who have a legitimate voice that needs to be heard." Moscow Skyscraper Tallest European Building-to-be
At 1017 feet tall, Moscow's Mercury City skyscraper will become Europe's tallest building when unveiled in December. Full Story: Moscow's Mercury City building is poised to become Europe's tallest building, according to the German-based researcher Emporis. It takes the honor from the British Shard skyscraper, which is 930 feet high. Russian retail billionaire Igor Kesaev's Mercury Group says Mercury City will reach a full height of 1017 feet when completed in December. [Igor Kasaev, President, Mercury Group]: "In my opinion the tower is really beautiful, it dominates the view of the whole Moscow City (business district), I think it will make the city nicer, will become a real landmark, the place where the people will meet and understand well where to go. It will be impossible to miss it." The Mercury City skyscraper was designed by Russian architect Mikhail Posokhin and a US architect, the late Frank Williams. [Mikhail Posokhin, Mercury City Architect]: "I think we have made a building which totally differs from all buildings we see in its neighbourhood. How do I see this difference? From my point of view the difference is that this building suits Moscow and this place. It's hard to imagine it elsewhere, it cannot be moved let's say to Vienna or somewhere else, it will contradict the spirit of another place." According to Kesaev, the project cost a total of about $1 billion. NJ, NY Experience Gasoline Shortages
Residents wait for hours for gasoline in New Jersey and New York. Full story: Gasoline has become a much sought after commodity in the upper northeast US after Sandy blew through the region earlier this week. At station after station in New York, the signs say it all. [Tourgay Kadioglu, Manager of a Shell Gas Station]: "All our computers were under water so they are now out of order. We are waiting for service to repair them so we get online again." And for those gas stations that are in business, residents wait in long lines... in cars, or on foot. [Rashad Levin, New York Resident]: "Almost like Armageddon. Yeah, it's rough. It's a rough feeling right here. You know, you got a car, you almost can't get gas. Everybody's fighting for it. Some stations you go to there's cars parked there waiting for when the truck comes and they just fill up. It's rough." It's not a lack of gasoline, officials say, but the widespread power outages that render the pumps inoperable. Compounding the problem-- the waterway in New York Harbor where fuel is imported is still closed to traffic. In New Jersey, residents are facing the same problem. [Lisette Scull, New Jersey Resident]: "No gas station is open." Industry officials say more than half of the gas stations that service New York City and New Jersey are shut. China's Four Point Plan for Syria

China's Four Point Plan for Syria
China's Defense Minister, Yang Jiechi met with the UN envoy to Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi on Wednesday. During the meeting Yang laid out his four-point plan to transition Syria toward a unified government. The plan includes brokering an immediate ceasefire between rebel forces and the Bashar al-Assad regime who have been fighting despite a holiday ceasefire. The second step involves creating a plan for political transition with representatives from both the Assad regime and opposition forces. The third step calls on the international community to support Brahimi's continued efforts to mediate a ceasefire, as well as the efforts of the UN and the Syria work group. Lastly, the plan calls for humanitarian assistance to the people of Syria, which should be neither "politicized nor militarized" according to Xinhua news agency. The plan comes after both the Chinese regime and Russia blocked a UN Security Council resolution to impose sanctions against Syria. Eleven out of the fifteen members backed the resolution with only China and Russia vetoing. Pakistan and South Africa both abstained from voting, but it was the veto from China and Russia that ultimately blocked the sanctions. The Chinese regime has a vested interest in balancing its relations with both Bashar Al-Assad's regime and the opposition, given it has a major stake in Syria's oil resources. Analysts speculate that Beijing chose to veto the sanctions in order to block actions that would see western forces gain military ... iPad Mini Launched in Hong Kong, Ahead of Mainland
The growing numbers of Apple fanatics in China's major metropolises will be looking with envy at their neighbors to the south in Hong Kong. People on the island got the chance to buy the new iPad mini Friday, at what's estimated to be a month before shoppers in the Mainland. The iPhone 5, released earlier this autumn in Western markets, is also yet to see Chinese store shelves. The Greater China region is now Apple's second most profitable global market, yet it can still see some delays in product releases. Increasingly, trade regulations and other forms of red tape have meant that new products are released at different times in Mainland China and in other Chinese regions. The Mainland faces longer waits for many products, in part due to stringent reviews demanded by the country's trade authorities. While many of these delays are commercially oriented, many observers speculate that they also involve the need for China's propaganda and security authorities to ensure that new devices do not pose unforeseen threats to the Communist Party's surveillance state. The upshot for foreign tech companies can be a frustrating wait for products to reach one of their most valuable end markets. Yet, for Apple fans in China, the frustrations might be greater still. China Passes First Law Protecting Rights of Mentally Ill
China's first law to protect the rights of the mentally ill was adopted on Friday. Human rights activists applauded the move, but questioned whether it would halt the practice of locking up dissidents and other so-called troublemakers against their will. The new law bans involuntary mental health examinations and inpatient treatment, unless the patient expresses the intent to harm themselves or others, according to a report from state-run Xinhua News Agency. It also requires patients be given the right to an independent review of their cases, said Nicholas Bequelin, a researcher at Human Rights Watch, a New York-based advocacy group. Mr. Bequelin said that now there will be clear procedures in China for appealing involuntary commitment. Unfortunately, Mr. Bequelin added that China's Ministry of Public Security still has the authority to run its own psychiatric institutions apart from the Ministry of Health's and private institutions. This gives the police the power to lock up anyone they choose. Questions also remain how strictly China's new mental health law will be enforced, since legal enforcement in China is often limited. China has long been criticized for not adopting such a mental health law, which was called for by the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, a UN treaty signed by China in 2008. Approximately 100 million Chinese people have mental illness, 16 million with severe conditions, according to a 2007 survey by the Chinese Center for Disease ...
