Japanese Car Sales Plummets in China Amidst Island Row
China may be the world's largest automaker, but Japanese car makers are having a tough time there. The heated stand-off between the two countries over the Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands has dealt a heavy blow to sales. Japan's largest automaker Toyota reported today a nearly 50% drop in sales for September, compared to last year. Honda says it has lost just over 40% in sales. Nissan recorded a drop of 35%. The poor sales means these Japanese car makers are having to pull back production. Reuters reports that Toyota could cut production until November, indicating that the impact of the islands dispute may remain for some time. Last month, after Japan declared it would try to purchase the small island chains in the East China Sea, violent anti-Japanese riots erupted through China. Japanese products, including cars, became targets or angry protestors. The islands disputes haven't been bad news for everyone though. Non-Japanese car sales have surged. German automaker BMW saw sales boosted by 55%, while South Korean car maker Hyundai recorded a rise of 15%. IMF Forecasts China Growth Decline
The International Monetary Fund has downgraded its growth forecast for China this year, predicting a "soft landing" for the world's 2nd largest economy. Today's lowered forecast comes as the economies of the Eurozone and United States continue to be hit hard by the global economic crisis. The IMF is expecting China's economy to grow at 7.8% this year. Back in July, that forecast was at 8%. Yesterday the World Bank also slashed China's growth outlook to 7.7%. Bert Hofman, World Bank chief economist for East Asia and the Pacific, said the country is in the midst of a "double whammy": slowing export and sluggish domestic demands. While the predicted growth figures far surpass that of most other countries, some analysts have warned that GDP figures do not give a true indication of the Chinese economy, because they are prone to manipulation and misreporting. Chinese Regime Uses Bo Xilai to Warn Against Corruption
Despite efforts to clamp down on rampant corruption, China's Communist Party struggles to reign in its officials. The latest example came in the form of former high-flying politician Bo Xilai. The man once tipped to enter the top leadership circle has been kicked out of the Party on a wide range of accusations, including covering up a murder, massive corruption and other unspecified crimes. On Monday, the Chinese regime's head of discipline, He Guoqiang, used Bo's case to warn other corrupt officials. He told anti-corruption officials that in the past five years, more than 660000 officials have been punished for corruption, state-run Xinhua News Agency reported. Still, corruption remains a major challenge for the Chinese regime. Even in the case against Bo, accusations of corruption and other misdeeds date back more than a decade from when he served in Liaoning province. It suggests he was able to get away with it whilst climbing up the ranks in the Communist Party. After Bo's expulsion from the Party on September 28th, Chinese authorities have yet to indicate when he would eventually stand trial. NTD's senior China analyst Heng He believes some of Bo's crimes will be dealt with before the 18th Party Congress, which has been delayed to November 8th. More details have emerged from the Congressional report about the two Chinese networking companies. This time, about Huawei's conduct surrounding its employees, including visa fraud and job bias. Monday's US House Intelligence Committee report cited employees as saying that, quote, "Huawei employees visiting from China on tourist or conference visas are actually working full-time at Huawei facilities, in violation of US Immigration law." The report also included evidence from US workers alleging that Huawei has laid off non-Chinese nationals and replaced them with Chinese workers on short term visas. The conditions of the short term visas do not permit the Chinese workers to work full time. The report also named "widespread discriminatory behavior" by Huawei officials. Employees reported that it was, quote, "very difficult, if not impossible for any non-Chinese national to be promoted in Huawei offices in the United States." The House Intelligence Committee says it has referred the allegations to the Department of Homeland Security, US Justice Department and other appropriate agencies. Chinese media have slammed a US congressional report that named China's two largest telecom gear makers as major security threats to the US. Following a year-long investigation, the US House Intelligence Committee warned on Monday that Huawei Technologies and ZTE Corp carried close ties with the Chinese regime, and they could open up US telecom infrastructure to spying from China. In response, Chinese state-run Xinhua News Agency accused the US of protectionism, saying the Committee's findings were, quote, "totally groundless." Huawei, meanwhile, called the report "China bashing." Still, Representative Mike Rogers who chairs the Committee has cautioned US telecom companies against using equipment made by Huawei and ZTE. [Mike Rogers, House Intelligence Committee Chairman] "Huawei and ZTE seek to expand in the United States, but as a result of our investigation, we do not have the confidence these two companies, with their ties to the Chinese government can be entrusted with infrastructure of such critical importance." In response, Turkey has bombed Syrian military targets, killing several Syrian soldiers. Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan says Turkey does not want war, but warned Syria not to test its resolve. The Syrian regime is battling rebels who control land close to the Turkish border, and several mortar strikes have crossed into Turkey. The continued exchanges are the most serious cross-border violence since the revolt against President Assad began in March last year. Turkey was once an ally of Assad's, but turned against him after his violent response to the uprising. Since them Turkey has led calls for Assad to quit, and has granted sanctuary to rebel leaders.
