Nobel Prize Stirs Controversy
"The Nobel Assembly and the Karolinska Institute have today decided to award the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2012 jointly to John B. Gurdon and Shinya Yamanaka "for the discovery that mature cells can be reprogrammed to become pluripotent." This year's Nobel Prize is a controversial one and it is rewarded to scientist in the field of stem cell research. John B. Gurdon discovered in the early sixties that he could take an egg cell on a frog and replace the immature cell nucleus with a mature frog intestinal cell nucleus. The modified egg cell grew into a normal tadpole, and the DNA of the mature cell still contained all the information required to grow into all cells of the frog. [G%oumlran Hansson, Secretary Nobel Assembly]: "John Gourdon made a remarkable discovery fifty years ago. That the nucleus of a mature cell contains all the information needed to build any information needed to build any cell in the body." Forty years later in 2006, Shinya Yamanaka discovered that one can reprogram mature stem cells in mice to become stem cells that can become any cell type in the body. [Thomas Perlmann, Professor Karolinska Institute]: "We think this an absolutely fantastic discovery and it has two important components. And one is and this is really important for us it's importance for the basic understanding of how cells become specialist and help us to understand really basic biology and medicine." These stem cells appear to be the equivalent of embryonic stem cells. Stem ... From: NTDTV Views: 133 5 ratings Time: 02:11 More in News & Politics

Turkish President Urges International Action on Syria
Turkey's president urges international action to help the "worst case scenario" in Syria, as another shell lands on Turkish soil. Turkish President Abdullah Gul said that the "worst-case scenarios" were happening in Syria, and urged for the international community to act. [Abdullah Gul, Turkish President]: "The worst case scenario is taking place in Syria, and the Syrian people are really suffering because of this. From time to time this affects us, we lost some of our citizens. Our government is in constant consultation with the Turkish military. Whatever is needed is being done immediately as you see, and it will continue to be done from now on too." It was also the sixth consecutive day were Turkish forces launched a retaliatory strike on Syria. A mortar, launched from Syria, landed in the Turkish countryside. Local villagers showed journalists the blast site. Shell casings could be seen in the middle of the cotton field in the district of Hacipasa. [Abdullah Gul, Turkish President]: "We can't expect the situation in Syria to carry on like this. One day for sure there will be a change, but our wish is that this happens before Syria demolishes itself and more blood is shed, and we wish the international community would act more efficiently." NATO has already thrown its full support behind Turkey in the matter. The NATO member was once a close ally of Syrian President Assad, but that allegiance fell apart after Assad's violent crackdown on its protests that began last ... Calls for Taiwan to Investigate Forced Organ Harvesting in China
80% of Taiwanese people who travel overseas for organ transplant operations go to China, but with the recent attention on forced organ harvesting of prisoners of conscience by the Chinese regime, the Taiwanese government is being asked to protect its citizens from unknowingly becoming recipients of organs harvested from murdered prisoners in China. Since 2006, international rights groups have accused China's Communist Party of taking organs from prisoners of conscience, the vast majority coming from practitioners of the Falun Gong spiritual practice. The United States and the United Nations have both been asked to investigate these claims. According to Taiwan's Department of Health, more than 1700 Taiwanese patients traveled to China for organ transplants between 2000 and 2011. The former Vice Chairman of Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council, Chen-yuan Tong, says Taiwanese authorities need to set up measures to ensure Taiwanese patient are not receiving organs sourced illegally in China. [Chen-Yuan Tong, Former Vice Chairman, Mainland Affairs Council] "Tracking the source of organs would help ensure that the organs used for transplant are part of regulated medical procedures, instead of being taken from forced donors, and a result of human rights abuses against a particular group, like Falun Gong." Yang Chang-cheng, the founder of advocacy group, Taiwan Friends of Tibet, wants the Taiwanese government to investigate the organ harvesting claims, to protect the interest of its ... Cisco Drops ZTE for Banned Sales to Iran
In another blow to Chinese telecommunication gear maker ZTE Corp after Monday's congressional report, a major US networking company announced it was dropping it as a sales partner. According to Reuters, Cisco Systems ended is partnership with ZTE after an internal investigation into claims that the Chinese firm had sold banned computer equipment to Iran, breaking a US embargo on the country. That equipment had come from Cisco and other US companies. Reuters first raised those claims in March. It prompted probes by Cisco and ZTE, as well as a FBI criminal investigation. That federal investigation is ongoing. ZTE is China's second largest telecom equipment maker. After Reuters' claim in March, the company said it would, quote, "curtail" its business with Iran. Nobel Prize Winning Researcher Told Becoming Scientist is 'Ridiculous'
British scientist shares the Nobel for medicine for his stem cell research and recalls being told to give up science at school. Full Story: As a young man, John B. Gurdon was told by his schoolmaster to avoid science. It was quite the blow for someone with a burgeoning interest in becoming a scientist. [John B. Gurdon, Nobel Prize Winning Scientist]: "The schoolmaster wrote the report, the main gist of it was that he had heard that Gurdon was interested in doing science and that this was a completely ridiculous idea, because there was no hope whatever of my doing science and anytime spent on it would be a total waste of time, both on my part and the part of the person having to teach him. So that completely terminated my science at school." Decades later, Gurdon heads the Gurdon Institute at Cambridge, and, as of today, is a Nobel Prize winning researcher. On Monday, both he and a Japanese scientist from Kyoto University split the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their work related to cellular reprogramming. The recognition is just another point in what has become a 50 year journey for the two. The 79-year-old Briton began experimenting with cells in the 1950s and in 1962, he became the first scientist to clone an animal. In an audacious attempt, he successfully grew a healthy tadpole from an egg of the frog using the DNA of another tadpole's intestinal cell. It was the same year that Shinya Yamanaka was born. He would build on Gurdon's research, and in 2006 ... From: NTDTV Views: 11 3 ratings Time: 02:43 More in Science & Technology

Beijing Puts up 35 New Air Quality Monitoring Stations
After much pressure from citizens and the international community, Beijing has completed 35 new air-quality monitoring stations. Now with 50 monitors, the city can ca smaller particulate in the air, which was previously left out of official air quality data. Air particulates of PM 2.5 or less are considered the most dangerous because they can get into the lungs and cause severe health problems. These particulates come from things like industrial production, coal burning, vehicle emission and solvents. The Chinese regime attacked US authorities in June for doing independent readings from its embassy in Beijing. The US measured the dangerous PM 2.5 particulates, which until January, Beijing did not. It accused the US of using unfair standards to judge the air quality because the US has higher environmental standards. While the Beijing government is now publishing data on the dangerous particulates, it admits the "annual intensity of PM 2.5 still doubles the cap set by WHO." The accident happened when a bus traveling on the expressway hit a car, then crossed the median strip into oncoming traffic. This caused a second bus traveling in the opposite direction to overturn trying to avoid a head-on collision, landing upside down in a trench beside the highway. Six people died at the scene, and another eight died in hospital. Of the forty injured, nine are in a critical condition. The cause of the accident is unknown, and police say investigations are continuing.
