Panda Celebrates 2nd Birthday in Vienna Zoo
Giant Panda Fu Hu enjoyed his second birthday with visitors in Vienna's Schoenbrunn Zoo on Thursday. Many visitors, including adults and children, had been waiting since early morning to see the panda on his special day. To their joy, the superstar showed up soon after his birthday presents were presented: a stack of colorful boxes filled with carrots, sweet potatoes and honey dessert. [Renate Haider, Giant Panda Breeder]: "We prepared many birthday surprises for Fu Hu in his birthday cake, including vegetables, sweet potatoes and corns." With all the eyes and camera lenses focused on the birthday boy, he took a little walk and then settled down to dig into his presents. Haider said she had been taking care of Fu Hu since he was born in the zoo. Fu Hu has always been in very good condition, she said, and is becoming stronger. Born weighing 100 grams, he now weighs 48 kg, half the size of an adult giant panda. Fu Hu is the second son of pandas Long Hui and Yang Yang, both of whom came to Vienna in 2003 for a 10-year loan and they still live in the zoo. Fu Hu and his brother Fu Long were born after natural conception in an artificial environment in Europe. Fu Long, who is three years older than Fu Hu, was sent back to China when he was two years old as per the loan agreement for his parents. The same applies to Fu Hu, who will be sent back to China after celebrating his second birthday, in October or November. The zoo is now negotiating with China, hoping to extent the ... New Zealand 'Accidental Millionaire' Sentenced to Jail
Hui "Leo" Gao, who fled after receiving $10 million NZ ($8.1 million USD) in funds after a bank error, has been sentenced to four years and seven months in jail. Full story: Accidental millionaire' Hui 'Leo' Gao was sentenced in New Zealand on Friday to 55 months in prison for stealing millions of dollars after a bank error credited him with too much money. Gao had attempted to overdraft $100000 New Zealand dollars, the equivalent of $81000 USD from the Westpac bank to renovate his BP petrol station in an attempt to sell, but an error gave him the equivalent of $8.1 million. He and his former girlfriend, Kara Hurring, fled to China after transferring the funds to an overseas account. Hurring was sentenced to nine months under house arrest and ordered to pay the equivalent of 9500 USD, having withdrawn that using Gao's credit card. Gao's bank accounts were frozen after the overseas bank transfer. He was eventually arrested in September 2010 trying to enter Hong Kong. Hurring was arrested when she returned to New Zealand in February 2011 soon after the birth of their child. She was charged with 25 counts of theft and found guilty in May. The bank has recovered $2.4 million US of the $5.4 million USD transferred overseas. $3 million USD is still outstanding. Spanish Super Cup First Leg: Barcelona 3-2 Real Madrid
The Spanish Super Cup saw a match that sent sparks flying as Spain's two powerhouses faced off on August 23rd. The much-anticipated match between Spanish rivals Barcelona and Real Madrid kept fans on the edge of their seats but finally Barcelona pulled ahead to beat Madrid 3-2. The match really heated up during the second half when both teams started scoring. Ronaldo scored a powerful header from a Mesut Ozil corner to put Madrid in the lead. That lead was not held for long though, as Barcelona's Pedro slipped in a goal to tie the two teams. Then Messi scored from the penalty spot, taking Barcelona into the lead. Barcelona solidified its position with a close range goal from Xavi for a 3-1 score. And yet in the last 5 minutes, against the run of play, De Maria scored for Real, earning them a crucial second away goal. This means that a 1-0 win in the second leg will be enough to make them champions. After the match Barcelona defender Gerard Pique spoke of his expectations for the return game: [Gerard Pique, Barcelona Defender]: "I think it will be a very open match because after the 3-2 everyone can win. They can win, we can win. We'll see. I think it will be a great game for all the people who follow us and who follow them and we will try to beat them." The conclusion of the Spanish Super Cup will be held at Real's Bernabeu Stadium next Thursday. Chinese State Media Knew of Olympic Hurdler's Injury Before Fall
China Central TV's lead anchor for the Olympics hurdles race is accused of being aware of the severity of Chinese athlete Liu Xiang's Achilles tendon injury, before he fell at the first hurdle of the 110 meter race. According to a front-page article in the Oriental Guardian newspaper on Thursday, Yang reported the injury to his superiors, who instructed him to prepare four different scripts for Liu's exit from the stadium. Many Chinese people were moved by Yang's commentary, as he seemed to nearly weep. Yang said (quote), "Liu Xiang was like a warrior. He flew when he clearly knew that he could not reach the end...He is a 29-year-old veteran and should take a rest now." An inside source told the Oriental Guardian that Liu Xiang had not fully recovered from his injury before leaving for London. Authorities told him to "try his best to win a gold," and he thus intensified his training, aggravating his injury. Many of Liu's fans felt cheated by the dishonest display on CCTV, and over a million comments were left on Sina Weibo microblogs about the issue. This comes as the Chinese public is routinely skeptical about the integrity of authorities and official media. "Hundreds of Thousands" Victim of Psychiatric Abuse in China: Report
Sent to psychiatric institutions against their will%mdashthat's what's happening to thousands of Chinese people each year, according to a Hong Kong base human rights group. The Chinese Human Rights Defenders released a report on Wednesday detailing the rights abuses facing this group of people. It says the Chinese regime's system of psychiatric confinement is prone to abuse, and many of those admitted are individuals the government wants silenced. One of those is Zhong Yafang, a victim of medical negligence in Zhejiang province. She was wrongly given chemo-therapy drugs in 2006. She tried to seek legal redress but says authorities blocked her efforts. After trying to appeal in Beijing, Zhong was detained in 2009 and sent to a psychiatric hospital. [Zhong Yafang, Victim of Psychiatric Abuse] "Of course my body and mind was severely abused, as well as my reputation. All of a sudden I was labeled a psychiatric patient. My parents cried day and night. All of the damage it's done to me, and my family...I cannot put into words." Anhui-based democracy activist Qian Jin was sent to a psychiatric institute for four months in 2011. That's when Chinese authorities cracked down on activists following fears of an Arab-style Jasmine Spring revolution. [Qian Jin, Democracy Activist] "This is how the regime persecutes people, whether it's democracy activists, rights defenders, petitioners or Falun Gong. That's what the regime does. It has no actual reason to sentence you, but is afraid of the ... From: NTDTV Views: 29 6 ratings Time: 02:11 More in News & Politics

Amazing Tomb Discovered In Mexico
Zapotec human remains discovered in a stunning red jug with face carving, at the Atzompa archaeological site in Oaxaca, Mexico. Full Story: Archaeologists in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca last week unearthed the tomb of a high-ranking Zapotec figure at the Atzompa archaeological site. The tomb is located in a 1100 year old burial complex that was discovered in July. Three rooms were found. Although the first two were largely empty, in the third room was a stunning red jar with a carved face, which held human remains. There was also jewelery, pottery and a skull fragment thought to have been left as an offering. [Eduardo Garcia, Archaeologist]: "We have the things that we've recently found in the third room, which consist, as of now, of two urns, one individual, and a small offering in a tubular bowl." Historians believe that the burial complex was intended for distinguished members of the local society. [Jaime Vera, Co-ordinating Archaeologist at the Atzompa Site]: "This was a funerary building. In a manner similar to the tomb of Pakal (in Palenque, Chiapas), there is an inscriptions room. That allows us to more or less understand the significance of the funeral mound, that was built to contain these three rooms." Experts consider the Atzompa site, founded between 650 and 900 AD, to be a satellite city of the larger archaeological site of Monte Alban, one of the earliest and most important cities of Mesoamerica. Atzompa was first excavated in 2009, revealing ... From: NTDTV Views: 229 6 ratings Time: 01:44 More in News & Politics

Spanish fresco restoration botched by amateur
An amateur Spanish restoration painter, who insists she had permission, attempted to repair a century-old fresco of Jesus, to interesting results. Full Story: What once looked like this - now looks like this. It was a rare 19th century Spanish fresco known as "Ecce Homo" - painted by famed artist Elias Garcia Martinez and depicting the face of Jesus Christ. An amateur art restorer in her 80's, Cecilia Gimenez decided it needed some work. [Cecilia Gimenez, Amateur Art Restorer]: ''We saw that everything was falling down and we fixed it." [Reporter]: "Did somebody order these jobs?" [Cecilia Gimenez, Amateur Art Restorer]: "Of course, it was the priest! The priest knew! He did! How could we do something like that without permission? He knew! [Reporter]: "Did you do it secretly, didn't you?" [Cecilia Gimenez, Amateur Art Restorer]: ''No! Of course not! Everybody who came into the church could see me as I was painting. I didn't do anything secretly.'' The artist's granddaughter - Teresa Garcia - donated the fresco exhibited in Church in the Spanish city of Borja. [Teresa Garcia, Donated the Painting]: "Until now she just painted on the tunic, but the problem started when she painted the head as well, because she has destroyed this painting." The work had little financial value - but was treasured by the community. The town council will bring in experts to try to fix it - but said considering the painting was done in oils direct onto a church wall - they face a tough task. For ... Lance Armstrong Doping Controversy
Whilst Lance Armstrong continues to claim his innocence, the doping charges laid against him are becoming harder and harder to ignore... Full Story: Seven-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong said on Thursday he would no longer fight doping charges by the US Anti-Doping Agency. The agency swiftly responded by saying it would strip him of his titles and ban him from competitive cycling. Armstrong is one of cycling's all time greats, and an inspiration to millions around the world. After beating testicular cancer, he went on to win the Tour de France an unprecedented seven times in succession, from 1999 to 2005. He emphatically denies the charges against him, yet maintains he no longer has the will to counter the accusations. Writing on his website Armstrong says: "There comes a point in every man's life when he has to say, 'Enough is enough. For me, that time is now. I have been dealing with claims that I cheated and had an unfair advantage in winning my seven Tours since 1999." The US Anti-Doping Agency affirm they have at least 10 former teammates and colleagues of Armstrong who will testify he used doping drugs during races from 1999 to 2005. They also maintain that blood samples taken from Armstrong between 2009 and 2010 are "fully consistent" with doping. In a written statement released to Reuters, Travis Tygart, CEO of the US Anti-Doping Agency, says: "It is a sad day for all of us who love sport and our athletic heroes. This is a heartbreaking example of how ... From: NTDTV Views: 32 3 ratings Time: 02:04 More in Sports

Are We Really Facing "Death by China"?
"Death by China" director Peter Navarro talks about why he thinks the US-China relationship is broken, and what he thinks we should do about it. The documentary "Death by China" argues that the unbalanced economic relationship between the US and China is the most urgent problem facing the US today. The film has been controversial, with reviews calling it "heavy-handed" and "agitprop," though few have argued that the fundamentals of what the film portrays are wrong. Though it highlights issues in China such as pollution, human rights abuses, and toxic products, which is it careful to blame on Chinese authorities and not the Chinese people, the film also portrays the US government and multinational corporations as part of the problem. On China Focus, we sit down with "Death by China" director Peter Navarro to talk about why he says the US-China relationship is broken, and how he plans to make trade reform with China a key issue in the upcoming US presidential elections. Is the US really facing death by China? And if so, what can people do about it? UN Syria Mission Chief Expected to Leave
Babacar Gaye, Chief of the UN Supervision Mission in Syria, is to have a meeting in the Iranian embassy in Damascus, and is expected to leave the violence-stricken country soon after. On Wednesday, the UN said that Iran has been supplying weapons to Syria, which agrees with contentions by many western officials and rebels of pro-Assad support from Tehran. UN observers have been pulling out of Syria recently, with the UN mandate having expired on August 19. Most of the monitors are expected to leave by Friday. The mission had been part of special envoy Kofi Annan's Six-Point plan, a diplomatic solution to a 17-month uprising against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's rule. However, due to ongoing violence, the conditions to renew the mandate had not been met. Operations were suspended in June after observers came under fire, and many had already left the country. A civilian office will be maintained in the capital city of Damascus, holding four military observers and fifty civilians, in case a chance for diplomacy to end the violence arises. Underwater Kiss Competition on Chinese Valentine's Day
Seven couples dive into a giant aquarium for an underwater kiss competition in the Wuhan Haichang Polar Ocean World as a romantic way to celebrate Chinese Valentine's Day, or the Qixi Festival. The festival falls on Thursday this year, according to the lunar calendar. One of the criteria for shortlisting the seven couples from among a large number of applicants was - naturally - good swimming skills. And the one and only criterion for victory was the length of the kiss. [Winner of Underwater Kiss Competition]: "I think it's very romantic." The longest-kissing couple was rewarded with souvenirs and a one-year pass to the sea world in the city of Wuhan. [Winner of Underwater Kiss Competition]: "This is the first Qixi Festival we have experienced as lovers. It's an unforgettable memory for us to spend the festival by participating in the underwater kiss competition." Arctic Ice to Hit Record Low, Researchers Alarmed
Sea ice in the Arctic Ocean is likely to shrink to a record small size sometime next week, and then keep on melting, according to scientist at the US National Snow and Ice Data Center. This summer has also seen unusual melting of the ice sheet covering Greenland, with NASA images showing that for a few days in July, 97 percent of the northern island's surface was thawing. The same month also saw an iceberg twice the size of Manhattan break free from Greenland's Petermann Glacier. The amount of sea ice in the Arctic is important because this region is a potent global weather-maker, sometimes characterised as the world's air conditioner. This year, the loss of sea ice in the Arctic has suggested a possible opening of the Northwest Passage north of Canada and Alaska and the Northern Sea Route by Europe and Siberia. As parts of the Arctic melted, 2012 also set records for heat and drought in much of the Northern Hemisphere temperate zone, especially the continental United States.
