Taiwan Reveals New Breed of Ornamental
Taiwan features "blue bolt" as the newest breed of ornamental shrimp. The tiny shrimp grows to less than a centimeter long and takes more than two years to develop, But depending on how well the patterns are showing on its body, each shrimp may cost 3500 USD. Also featured is a 60-year-old Royal Pleco -- the oldest fish in the exhibition -- an age equivalent of a 200-year-old man. [Fu Li-wei, Fish Owner]: "Its scientific name is Panaque cf. suttonorum. This kind of fish usually grows to 40- 50 cm, but our 'Hulk' has exceeded the normal size. It is 65 cm long. This is the most special feature." Syrian FM Criticizes Qatar Opposition Talks
Syria's foreign minister ridicules the latest meeting by Syrian opposition groups in Qatar, while Russia backs Egyptian plan to reconvene a regional initiative to try to end the Syrian crisis. Full story: Amateur video purports to show government forces bombarding the city of Deraa on Sunday. Syria's civil war continues to gain momentum with casualties mounting on both sides. Latest reports from the UK- based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights claimed 20 rebel fighters were killed in an air strike in Idlib whilst 50 Syrian pro-Assad security forces are said to have died when a suicide bomber blew himself up in Hama. These reports and videos cannot be independently verified. Syria's fragmented and factional opposition is now trying to create a unified front, with international backing, at a meeting in Doha to better their chances of ending more than a year of bloody conflict. In Damascus, Syria's foreign minister, Faisal Miqdad, dismissed the Doha talks as more laughable foreign meddling in Syrian affairs. Russia, which also opposes what it calls foreign interference in the Syria crisis, endorsed on Monday an Egyptian talks initiative that would include three opponents of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad - Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Turkey - together with Iran - a staunch ally of Syria. Bomb Blasts Kill at Least Two in Manama, Bahrain
Five bombs explode in the heart of the Bahraini capital Manama, killing two Asian street cleaners and possibly a third person. Full story: Five bombs exploded in the heart of the Bahraini capital Manama on Monday (November 5). Officials say two Asian street cleaners were killed. The violence prompted mutual accusations from activists and a government trying to put down a mostly Shi'ite pro-democracy uprising. The Interior Ministry said the bombs were homemade and described the blasts as "terrorist acts" - its term for violence by opposition activists. Opposition politician Matar Matar of the Shi'ite party Wefaq said he doubted that opposition activists were behind Monday's attacks, noting that leading Shi'ite clerics had called on followers to avoid escalating the conflict with the government. Injuries to protesters or police are relatively common in the 21-month-old uprising. Attacks on the public, however, have been rare on the Gulf island, where the Sunni Muslim Al Khalifa dynasty rules over a majority Shi'ite population. The BNA agency said the explosions took place between 4:30 and 9:30 am (0130-0630 GMT) in the Qudaibiya and Adliya districts of Manama. One of the attacks took place outside a cinema, where one of the street cleaners died when he kicked a package that blew up. A witness said that blast caused little material damage, suggesting it had not been large. Police chief Tariq Hasan Essa confirmed that two Asian men were killed. [Tariq Hasan Essa, Chief of ... Last Minute Scramble to Accommodate New Jersey and New York Voters
New Jersey allows voters displaced by superstorm Sandy to vote by email, while some ballots in New York could be cast in tents in an 11th-hour scramble ahead of the US election. For Americans struggling in the aftermath of superstorm Sandy, Tuesday's (November 6) election is the last thing on their minds. [Richard Fox, Staten Island Resident]: (English) "It's really on the back burner. I don't even know what we are doing Tuesday." While aid is being distributed, more than a million homes and businesses are still without power and scores of polling stations have been rendered useless. But officials are scrambling to ensure election day goes ahead. Displaced people in New Jersey have been designated overseas voters - allowing them to cast ballots by email. In New York City, the electoral board has been urged to make alternative plans for affected polling stations. But frustrated residents say more planning should have been done. [Arlene Johnson, Staten Island Resident]: (English) "Maybe it would be better off if they put it off for like another week or so. And I can totally understand that. I think it would be best because a lot of people can't get out now, you know?" If voter turnout falls below 25 percent as a direct result of a disaster, New York state law can allow for a second day of polling. In today's NTD China News, the Chinese regime has officially expelled Bo Xilai from the Communist Party, following a four day closed meeting that ended on Sunday. China's former railway minister, Liu Zhijun, was also expelled during the 7th Plenary Session of the CCP's Central Committee. Liu was sacked last year following accusations of corruption. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has reportedly asked Chinese authorities to investigate the finances of his family. It's in response to a report by the New York Times that alleged Wen's family controlled $2.7 billion in assets. Wen's family have denied the claims. Tibet's spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, has urged incoming Chinese leaders to undertake political reform, saying the regime's current heavy handed approach in Tibet has not worked. A heavy snowstorm that struck northern China over the weekend has left three Japanese tourists dead. Japanese carmaker Toyota has announced an optimistic profit forecast for this year, despite the setbacks in China following anti-Japanese riots. More villagers in China's Hebei province are extending support for a persecution victim, that's despite the threat of crackdown by local authorities. Bo Xilai Formally Expelled from Communist Party
Disgraced Chinese official Bo Xilai has been officially expelled from the Communist Party. The Chinese regime announced the decision following the 7th Plenary Session of the Party's 17th Central Committee that ended on Sunday. Bo's is now open to criminal prosecution. The Party's internal disciplinary body submitted a report of its investigations into Bo to the Central Committee. State-run Xinhua News Agency reports that the Committee has reviewed and approved that report. Xinhua says Bo violated Party discipline in each of his official positions, starting from when he was the Mayor of Dalian in Liaoning Province during the 1990s. Sunday's announcement also accused Bo of using his position to seek profits, and receiving "huge bribes" personally, or through his family. Bo's wife, Gu Kailai, has been named as misusing Bo's position. Other unnamed family members allegedly accepted large amounts of money and property from others. The Chinese regime announced Bo would be stripped of his Party membership on September 28. Bo has not been heard from since March, after he was sacked as Chongqing's Party Secretary. Bo Xilai was tipped to enter the Politburo Standing Committee%mdashthe Party's top ruling circle%mdashduring this year's power transition. More Grassroots Support for Persecution Victim
Residents from Zhengding County in Hebei province are rallying behind a victim of persecution, despite the threat of crackdown by authorities. Li Lankui is a practitioner of the Falun Gong spiritual practice. On June 1st, Zhengding police detained Li during a security sweep ahead of a visit by an US official, Iowa Governor Terry Branstad. 703 local residents protested Li's detention, by putting their thumb prints on an appeal letter for Li's release. Li's supporters say local authorities retaliated, and began questioning those who participated in the appeal letter. According to rights group, the World Organization to Investigate the Persecution of Falun Gong, Hebei police also cracked down on other Falun Gong adherents. One practitioner, Yang Yinqiao, reportedly fell to her death in nearby Shijiazhuang city, as she tried to get away from security agents. Despite the security clampdown, Zhengding residents have continued to stand up for Li Lankui. Three more appeal letters, each with hundreds of fingerprints, have surfaced. Hebei resident Mr Cao says the wave of support indicates that the Chinese regime is losing grip on the public it has tried to control with high-pressure tactics. [Mr Cao, Hebei Resident] "I sympathize with Falun Gong. The public is slowly waking up. It used to be high pressure threats, but now the public no longer wants to remain silent, and are standing up to it. I think the Communist Party's iron fist rule is about to come to an end." Wen Jiabao Requests Probe Into Family's Wealth
Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao is asking for a formal investigation into the finances of his family, according to Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post. It follows a New York Times article suggesting Wen's extended family has amassed a multibillion-dollar fortune. Wen and his family have denied the Time's claims. Two Beijing lawyers confirmed that Wen's family had engaged them to dispute the allegations. They've also not ruled out taking legal action against the Times. If Wen's investigation request is true, it may be an attempt to clear his name. The outgoing Premier has been one of the main advocates of anti-corruption in the Chinese regime. Animals Abandoned After Hurricane Sandy reunited with their owners
Pets left behind by Hurricane Sandy are returned to their owners. If that is not possible they are taken to safe shelters Hurricane Sandy left destroyed towns in her wake, but she also left thousands of animals stranded and abandoned. This past week the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) stepped in to help save pets that were left to fend for themselves during the superstorm. Many cats and dogs across the states of New York and New Jersey were brought to mobile trailer units to receive medical treatment and to be reunited with their owners. The ASPCA Field Investigations and Response teams regularly conduct work following natural disasters, including hurricanes. They often work in conjunction with other animal rescue operations, including the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) and the Animal Rescue League (ARL). The teams expect to continue to conduct land and water search-and-rescue missions for the remainder of the Hurricane Sandy recovery period. China's New Leaders Will Inherit Media Revolution
China will see a changing of the guard beginning November 8, and there is a media revolution happening in China that new leaders may find impossible to stop. All information in China has been tightly controlled, as well any news released to outside media. State-controlled media like 'the Peoples Daily' have functioned as the Communist Party's mouthpiece by reporting events but applying the Party's spin. Many events do not get reported at all. But these media face pressure to keep up to an Internet community that is almost instant in reporting uncensored news on anything and everything. [Du Feijin, Director, Political Department, Peoples Daily]: "Now especially as the media environment has changed, if you don't report it, the Internet will anyway, right?" China has an online community of over 500 million people, and 60 percent of them use twitter-like microblogs, or 'Weibo' in Chinese, to post, debate and gossip. No matter how the regime tries to restrict the spread of politically sensitive content, a young urban middle class with smartphones and laptops look for information online rather than in traditional media. [Jia Mingjie, Internet Savvy User]: "Now you can find a lot of sources of information and news items which are more truthful, and you can find them more easily. Now, as soon as something happens, all you have to do is look on your microblog and you'll know about it." Some officials appear to favor this new online media. Others fear it will bring down the ... Toyota Upbeat about Global Profits Despite China Setback
Japanese carmaker Toyota remains upbeat over this year's profits, despite the recent turmoil in its Chinese market. In September protests erupted in China over Japan's nationalization of the Senkaku, or Diaoyu Islands in the East China Sea. Japan, China, and Taiwan all lay claims to the islands, which are believed to contain rich deposits of oil and natural gas in the surrounding waters. During the demonstrations, Chinese protesters overturned Japanese cars and targeted dealerships with Japanese vehicles. Toyota, Honda, Nissan and other Japanese car makers all suffered a drop in sales following the conflict. Now however, Toyota reports that it expects to make a yearly profit of $9.7 billion, despite the impact from China. [Satoshi Ozawa, Executive Vice President]: "We compiled the financial results on the assumption that there will be an impact of 200000 vehicles in the second half of the year from October to next March." With the Chinese economy slowing and anti-Japan sentiment still strong in China, Toyota says it expects to lose almost $375 million dollars in sales. [Satoshi Ozawa, Executive Vice President]: "We assume there will be a 30 billion yen impact to the net profit in our financial results." China makes up just 12% of Toyota's market, so its overall performance is somewhat insulated from the poor figures there. Toyota also reported positive earnings in North America and Southeast Asia, filling the gap that China left. Despite the recent set back in China ...
