Chilean Student Protestors Dispersed
Police in Santiago, Chile used water cannons on students demanding education reform on Thursday. Several students were arrested as many others scattered from the school, as the city chose to use force after students rejected an offer from mayor Mayor Pablo Zalaquett. Students began holding sit-in demonstrations last week, as they demanded an overhaul of the education system. The police operations began Thursday, going from school to school, with more than two dozen being occupied. Student leader Camilla Vallejo had to say this: [Camilla Vallejo, Student Leader]: "It is a direct assault on public education and on the chance to advance towards ending inequality in Chile." Sandra Cafilaf, a representative of the Confederacion Suiza High School, considered the operation "repressive" and "excessive." [Sandra Cafilaf, Rep. of CS High School]: "We hold the interior minister and the mayors responsible, those who have given the order to act in a repressive manner and to use excessive force against youngsters who are only asking for change in this country; important changes that deal with educational demands." Protests over the education system have continued for over a year, as students call for an end of what they consider profit-driven, poor education. Car Speeds Through New York's Lincoln Tunnel at 190mph
Former Formula 1 driver David Coulthard ripped through New York's Lincoln Tunnel early Wednesday morning, reaching speeds in excess of 190 mph. The Scottish driver flew under the Hudson river between New Jersey and New York City in under a minute, as part of a Red Bull Racing promotional tour for the Grand Prix of America scheduled for June next year. [David Coulthard, Former Formula F1 Driver]: "It's a weird attack on your senses when you go fast and you've got sort of this closure of the tunnel leading to the point. I was disappointed we couldn't go faster! We managed to do 190mph but I think it would have been great if we could have gone a bit quicker, but to have the opportunity to drive a Formula 1 car from New Jersey to New York it's totally unique." Earlier in the week, the 13-time winner on the F1 circuit drove the 2011 Red Bull car - last year's champion - around the planned street course of the Grand Prix of America, to test how the high performance vehicle handled the imperfections of the roads. The race will become only the second street circuit, after Monaco, on the Formula 1 tour, taking drivers around the hills of New Jersey with the Manhattan skyline in the background. The 2013 Grand Prix of America will become the second US stop for Formula 1, with the United States Grand Prix in Texas hosting its inaugural race at the end of this year. In the current Formula 1 season, Ferrari's Fernando Alonso is leading the drivers standings, while Red Bull Racing is in ... From: NTDTV Views: 3241 18 ratings Time: 01:30 More in News & Politics

President Obama And Mitt Romney Face Off - As Paper Dolls!
US presidential candidates Barack Obama and Mitt Romney go toe-to-toe in a new paper doll book. Collectors can dress the men up in 16 different costumes ranging from battling robots to gladiators. Dover Publications Vice President Ken Katzman says the looks are based on American pop culture. [Ken Katzman, Dover Publications, Vice President]: "We have them as boxers, them as jousting knights, them as even sumo wrestlers. So a lot of different costumes battling robots, that you know, people just recognize as fun, kind of pop culture things." The book is the company's follow-up to their successful 2008 editions, which featured separate books for Obama and John McCain. [Ken Katzman, Dover Publications, Vice President]: "People want a fun unique collectible for an election. And actually back in '08 we did two books, one for candidate Obama, one for candidate McCain and they did great, we sold over 100000 copies. So for the 2012 edition we put both candidates together. You know, politics is rough and tumble, people want something humorous and different so we came up with these fun costumes to put together with the candidate's dolls, and we think people are going to love it." Each candidate is outfitted in their underwear - boxers and a t-shirt -which Katzman says is a paper doll tradition. Recently the Obama administration requested several of the paper doll books to use as gifts, suggesting that the novel collectibles even have the endorsement of the White House. For more news ... Royal Couple Wax Figures Drop in for Tea at British Embassy
Wax versions of Will and Kate were treated to afternoon tea at the British Embassy in Berlin on Thursday. The Royal pair dropped in before they end up in their new permanent home in Madame Tussauds wax museum on Friday. True to life and in line with diplomatic protocol, the waxworks were met by the deputy ambassador, Andrew Noble. [Andrew Noble, Deputy British Ambassador]: "I think it's just exciting. I mean I agree that they are very lifelike. And I'm sure an awful lot of people are going to see them and get very excited. That's one of the things about the members of the Royal family and about Madame Tussauds as far as I understand it. So I think people are going to be excited." The figures are being exhibited as part of a campaign to promote Britain overseas, in the year William's grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, celebrates her 60th jubilee, and London is hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The popularity of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge has been on the rise since their wedding in 2011, and, according to a spokesperson for Madame Tussauds, the museum is happy to respond to the growing demand. [Nina-Kristin Zerbe, Press Spokesperson, Madame Tussauds]: "At the end of the exhibition we have a terminal and we are asking the visitors there who they were missing in the exhibition and who they would like to see. And especially after the wedding last year those two were in high demand. And so we gladly responded to the popular demand and have them here in house for the ... Boy's head wedged in guardrail
Finally today, a little boy in Guizhou province may have learned a lesson about playing with stones -- or stone railings to be exact. The young boy was playing with friends on a staircase, but managed to put himself in a hard position -- literally. For some reason, perhaps he wanted to see what was on the other side, his head became stuck between the stone railings, and playtime stopped being fun. Firefighters were called in to free the boy. First they tried to pry him out with their bare hands, but the stone%mdashand the young boy's head%mdashwould not budge. By now, the harrowing rescue effort had attracted quite a crowd. Eventually, the rescuers brought out a saw and, with some delicate and careful maneuvering, the boy was freed from the rather unpleasant stony confinement. The boy appears to be unhurt after the ordeal. He was however quite upset by the whole experience%mdashand probably won't be peering through stony railings again anytime soon. Lower Grain Output Could Fuel China Inflation: Analyst
China sharply increased its import of key grains, like corn, soybean and wheat the first half of this year. Total grain import at the end of June rose by 41.2% year-on-year. That's despite local authorities claiming domestic output has increased by 2.8%%mdasha record since 1997. Assistant Professor Frank Tian Xie says official figures are questionable. [Frank Tian Xie, Assistant Professor of Marketing, University of South Carolina Aiken]: "We know the propaganda and its figures cannot be trusted. It's like the stock of grains they claim to have. Even Premier Wen Jiabao has to climb up the silo to check if there are grains there when he does inspections. Officials nationwide are deceiving each other, superiors cannot believe the figures given to them." Xie believes output figures are lower than expected, and this could fuel inflation. [Frank Tian Xie, Assistant Professor of Marketing, University of South Carolina Aiken]: "Looking at the futures market, corn, soy bean and wheat prices are all climbing. Given the widespread flooding this year, summer crop yields is likely to drop. A big problem facing China now is economic stagnation and inflation. If the rising grain prices pushes up inflation this could directly affect social stability." On Tuesday, China's agricultural ministry announced what it called the "worst infestation in a decade" of corn crops. Armyworms have attacked about 10% of the country's corn. Analysts say up to 2% of total yield could be wiped out. For more ... From: NTDTV Views: 9 1 ratings Time: 01:27 More in News & Politics

Hong Kong Police Trial Small Cameras on Officers
Police officers in Hong Kong will trial small cameras worn on the body. Police say the cameras are an attempt to cut crime, while human rights groups say the new technology will invade the privacy of Hong Kong's citizens. An unknown number of frontline police officers will wear the small cameras during a three-month trial period, according to a report in The South China Morning Post. The devices will be placed on officers in tactical units and in the Kowloon West emergency units. The cameras are worth $875 each and are around the size of a cigarette packet. Officials hope the cameras will deter crime, keep police from acting out of line during protests or in periods of civil unrest, and aid with gathering evidence. If the test is deemed a success, the Hong Kong police force will buy around 7000 of the small devices. Opponents say police could potentially use the cameras to monitor political activists and protests against the Chinese regime because there are currently no laws regarding use of the small cameras. Wen Jiabao Signals Economic Stimulus
Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has signaled for more economic stimulus, after disappointing indicators for July. Wen told state-run media on Wednesday that, there is, (quote) "growing room for monetary policy operation." He had recently come under criticism for being too conservative and not reacting to the severity of the Chinese economic slowdown. Wen said adjustments can now be made after July figures on decreasing inflation were released. While Asian stocks reacted positively with an upswing of 0.05% in the MSCI Asia Pacific Index, Chinese stocks continued a two week decline with the Shanghai Composite index down 0.3% , closing at 2112.20 on Wednesday. Wen also signaled more tough times ahead. He warned on Wednesday, that "the foundation for economic stabilization is still unstable, and that economic hardships may continue for some time." Wen's bleak outlook comes as the figures for inbound FDI for July dropped by 7.58 billion US dollars, or 8.7%, from June. No New Solutions on Syria after China's Meeting with Assad's Envoy
China's Foreign Minister met with an envoy of Syrian President Bashir al-Asaad. Bouthaina Shaaban arrived in Beijing earlier this week. Details of her Thursday meeting with Minister Yang Yiechi came through a Chinese Foreign Ministry statement. In it, Yang urged the Syrian government and the opposition to end the violent conflict that has gripped Syria since March last year. The Chinese regime and Russia have blocked key measures by the United Nations Security Council to impose sanctions on Assad, in a bid to force him to step down. The Chinese regime indicated it could also meet with the Syrian opposition. Yang did not offer any new solutions on Syria's ongoing crisis after Thursday's meeting. Japanese Embassy Under Tight Security in Beijing
The Japanese embassy in Beijing has a heavy layer of security today, as protests rage outside the building. The protests are in response to Japan detaining 14 Chinese activists who landed on one of the disputed Diaoyu islands yesterday. Japanese media said today that Japan will deport the group if they have not committed any other crimes. Tokyo lodged a complaint with the Chinese ambassador over the intrusion. At the same time Beijing demanded the activist's immediate release. Beijing and Tokyo have conflicting claims over the uninhabited islets, called Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China. The islands are thought to have large oil deposits underneath them. Tensions over the territorial dispute have escalated in the past months. In July, the Japanese government announced it is considering purchasing the islands from its owners to end the dispute. Hong Kong-based China analyst, Willy Lam, believes tensions could climb from here, but rules out any military action. [Willy Lam, Adjunct Professor, Chinese University] "I don't think this will lead to military confrontation because I think there's a good agreement between two governments to avoid military clashes at all costs. However, I think the climate will worsen, the confrontation will certainly be scaled up in the forthcoming months." The United States, meanwhile, has called for calm. Wang Lijun's Unreported Background
Most people know Wang Lijun, the police chief in Chongqing who fled to the US consulate in February, as just that a Police Chief. But very few knew that he was also involved in something very different to police work, something more a medical doctor would do. No, Wang himself is not a doctor and has no medical degree, but from 2003 through 2008, Wang was not only the Party Secretary of the Jinzhou Public Security Bureau in Liaoning province, he was also in charge of the police department's so-called On-Site Psychology Research Center. There he proudly oversaw thousands of organ transplants from executed prisoners, and personally conducted psychological experiments on them. In this episode of China Focus, we discuss why this side of Wang Lijun is something that China's state-run media are now trying to downplay--because it may relate to the scandal involving ousted Chinese official Bo Xilai and his wife, Gu Kailai. China Focus - Gu Kailai, Bo Xilai, and China's Black Market Body Trade
You've probably heard the controversy surrounding the international exhibitions that display plastinated human bodies%mdasha controversy over where the bodies came from. Well now, an inside source has told NTD that Bo Xilai and Gu Kailai were involved in facilitating the sale of unclaimed human bodies%mdashpeople who did not give consent. We're talking about Bo Xilai, the ousted Chinese Communist Party secretary, and his wife Gu Kailai, who was recently tried for murdering a British citizen. So we set out to verify this information. We'll tell you what we know, what's unconfirmed but is logically the most likely, and what still needs further investigation. The technique for plastinating human bodies was developed by this guy: German doctor Gunther von Hagens. He visited the city of Dalian in China's Liaoning Province in 1993, after contacting Sui Hongjin (隋鸿锦), an assistant professor at Dalian Medical University. The two built a relationship. And in December 1996, von Hagens accepted a visiting professorship at Dalian Medical University. A few years later, von Hagens set up a plastination company called von Hagens Dalian Plastination Ltd, and hired Sui as his general manager. There's conflicting info about when von Hagens founded the company, though. Von Hagens' Body Worlds website claims it was in 2001, but company registration documents show that the Dalian city government approved the company in August 1999%mdashwhile Bo Xilai was still mayor of Dalian. Spanish "Robin Hood" Mayor Loots Supermarket
A Spanish mayor who became a cult hero for staging robberies at supermarkets and giving stolen groceries to the poor set off on a three-week march on Thursday that could embarrass the government and energise anti-austerity campaigners. [Juan Manuel Sanchez Gordillo, Mayor of Marinaleda]: "We will occupy banks because they are responsible for this crisis and some of them (bankers) should be in jail. The attorney general should intervene as well as Mrs Becerril (the ombudsman), but that is unlikely." Seven people have been arrested for taking part in the two raids, in which labour unionists, cheered on by supporters, piled food into supermarket carts and walked out without paying. Juan Manuel Sanchez Gordillo, regional lawmaker and mayor of Marinaleda, stood outside the supermarket. Gordillo, who has been referred to as a Spanish Robin Hood, has political immunity as an elected member of Andalusia's regional parliament, but says he would be happy to renounce it and be arrested himself. His critics, however say he cannot go breaking the law like Robin Hood and at the same time be the Sheriff of Nottingham, in reference to his public post. On Thursday, Gordillo and about 500 labourers supporting his cause began a trek from Jodar, the town with Andalusia's highest unemployment rate, planning to march across the region in blistering summer heat to persuade other local leaders to refuse to comply with government reforms designed to cut spending.
