Tymoshenko Vows to Keep up Hunger Strike
Ukraine's jailed former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko will continue the hunger strike she launched earlier this week, according to party colleagues. She started the hunger strike to protest against alleged vote-rigging in favour of President Viktor Yanukovich's party in a weekend election. Party deputy head Oleksander Turchinov told journalists Tymoshenko plans to continue her hunger strike after visiting her in the hospital where she is being treated. [Oleksander Turchinov, Batkyvshchina Party Deputy Head]: "Of course we asked Yulia Volodymyrivna (Tymoshenko) to stop the hunger strike because her health is important for the party and I think for the whole Ukraine, but the situation in many constituencies and information how openly and cynically the results of the people's vote are beng falsified enrage her of course. The only thing she can do against it in this situation is to declare the hunger strike. That's why we couldn't convince Yulia Volodymyrivna to stop it and she will continue (hunger strike) until the Ukrainian society gives a clear assessment of what is happening now in many constituencies and regions." Exit polls and partial results from Sunday's vote showed Yanukovich's Party of the Regions would win more than half the seats in the 450-member assembly. The united opposition bloc, which includes Tymoshenko's party, was second with about 100 seats, according to preliminary estimates. But Tymoshenko, who had warned before the vote that the Regions' victory ... From: NTDTV Views: 0 1 ratings Time: 01:48 More in News & Politics

Captured FARC Jailer Apologises to Victims
A veteran FARC (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia) member came face to face with kidnap victims during an emotional court hearing in Colombia on Wednesday. Heli Mejia Mendoza, aka "Carcelero" or "Jailer" is believed to have held numerous high-profile FARC kidnap victims in rebel jungle prisons.Captured in 2008 by Colombian authorities, Mendoza apologised to his victims at a hearing in the city of Villavicencio. [Heli Mejia Mendoza, FARC Member]: "Looking at the error I committed and all the injuries I have caused I am sorry, I apologise." Mendoza is said to have confessed to working for the guerilla group for decades and being the FARC's jailer. [Heli Mejia Mendoza, FARC Member]: "I am sorry because I have committed much damage before the world, since the age of ten with guerillas and then with leftist guerillas." Among Mendoza's prisoners were reportedly three US military contractors. They were kidnapped by rebels after their plane was shot down by the FARC in 2003. The American nationals were held in a guerilla-controlled jungle region and locked in makeshift cells until their release in 2008. Earlier this year FARC rebels freed 10 members of the armed forces held hostage for more than a decade, the last of a group of captives the drug-funded group had held as bargaining chips to pressure the government. Police sergeant Wilson Rojas, who was among the freed hostages, urged other members to lay down their arms and work towards reconciliation in Colombia. [Wilson ... Pope Celebrates Sistine Chapel's 500 Year-old Frescoes
Pope Benedict held evening vespers in the Sistine Chapel to mark the 500th anniversary of the room's famed frescoes. On Wednesday (October 31) Pope Benedict the 16th led evening prayers at the Sistine Chapel in celebration of the Vatican chapel's famed frescoes. Five-hundred years ago, on October 31, 1512, Pope Julius II held an evening service to inaugurate the room where Michelangelo created the famous works of art. The frescoes immediately became the talk of the town and have since become one of the most famous works of art around the world. [Pope Benedict XVI, Head of Catholic Church]: "It is, as if, during liturgical action all this symphony of figures comes alive, certainly in a spiritual sense but also inseparably in an aesthetic sense because the perception of art is a typically human act and as such, involves the sense and the spirit. In a nutshell, the Sistine Chapel, observed during prayer is even more beautiful, more authentic and reveals itself in all its richness. Here everything lives, everything resonates when in contact with the word of God." The Vatican has given warning that it may eventually limit visitors in an effort to protect the famed frescoes. The Sistine Chapel is arguably the most visited room in the world. With tourism growing every year, some five million people, as many as 20 thousand a day in summer, walk through the famous room. The ceiling of the chapel includes one of the most famous scenes in the history of art - the arm of God reaching ... From: NTDTV Views: 62 6 ratings Time: 02:12 More in News & Politics

Child Abuse on Radar After Teacher Throws Kindergartener
Chinese citizens were outraged this summer by a preschool abuse case in Guandong province. Caught on surveillance camera, this kindergarten teacher throws a speech-impaired child to the ground for refusing to cooperate. Cases like these have made Guangdong Province look at the root of the abuse in kindergarten classrooms. One factor that stood out is the lack of teacher training these teachers had before they were hired. [Wu Tanwei, Spokesman for Educational Sector of Guangdong Provincial Committee]: "Currently, at least 70 percent of kindergarten teachers in Guangdong province have not been professionally trained. They should be properly trained and licensed before working as kindergarten teachers." China Central Television reported that only 10% of all kindergarten teachers in Guangdong Province hold a bachelors degree. While public education is still the most common in China, private kindergartens have sprung up to ease state budgets. Many private kindergartens try to survive on tuition alone, but with no government support, they have to keep costs low by cutting corners. One of the ways they cut corners is by hiring unqualified teachers with very low pay and not giving them training. Starting in 2013, Guangdong Province will require kindergarten teachers to be certified before they can teach in a classroom. Education authorities are hoping this will decrease the number of incidents of child abuse in kindergartens. For more news and videos visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com ... Archaeologists Discover Europe's Oldest Town
Archaeologists in Bulgaria claim they have discovered Europe's oldest town in the north-east of the country. Full Story: Bulgarian archaeologists led by Professor Doctor Vasil Nikolov, from the National Archaeology Institute and Museum, claim to have discovered one of the oldest towns in Europe, in north-east Bulgaria. Dr. Nikolov, who has been studying the area for many years, located the town near the salt pans in the vicinity of Provadia in the Varna Region, the same locale as the first salt factory in Europe. [Dr. Vasil Nikolov, National Archaeology Institute and Museum]: "We can now say that the Provadia salt pans are in the oldest town in Europe, existing between 4700 to 4200 BC, in the second half of the fifth millennium before Christ." Dr. Nikolov says, it was the salt%mdashequivalent in value to today's oil%mdashwhich led to the town being established. [Dr. Vasil Nikolov, National Archaeology Institute and Museum]: "What makes this ancient village different from all the others in South-East Europe is the salt springs; the salt body is nine meters below us. The salt water was likely evaporated by different techniques in ceramic bowls and the salt produced may have been used as money, because salt was important for humans and animals as well. So salt production made this village different from others, giving it prosperity." Further hints of a rich society were found in skeletal remains showing remnants of copper hair accessories. Think Tank Urges End to One Child Policy
Ahead of the National Party Congress later this month, China's controversial one-child policy is coming into the limelight. One think tank that is affiliated with China's State Council says the 32-year-old restriction should come to an end within three years. In the China Development Research Foundation report, it argues that there are gender imbalances among the Chinese people, and that the policy is no longer useful. It says the policy should be phased out by the year 2020. In the report, Nankai Univeristy populations studies specialist Li Jiamin says, (quote) "It is just a matter of finding the right solution. Making the jump to two children is only a matter of time now." He went on to say (quote), "If China sticks to the one-child policy, we are looking at a situation as bad as the one in southern Europe. Old people will make up a third of the population by 2050." Estimates say the one-child policy has prevented anywhere from 100 million births to 400 million births, sometimes through brutal means such as forced abortions. And according to the Bureau of Statistics, China's population over 60-years-old is at an all-time high of 177 million, and still growing. By 2013, China's National Committee on Aging predicts that there will be over 200 million people over 60 in China. Rural couples have long been allowed to have more than one child, especially if the first one is a girl. For many Chinese, having a boy is paramount to carry on the family name. China's Economy Bad News for Next Leaders
As China's economy shows signs of faltering, Chinese leaders may have a hard time keeping the prestige China has as the second largest economy in the world. Since 2002, China's economy has almost tripled in size, but analysts say, without political reform, the country could be headed for troubled times. One of the platforms China's leaders have run on is economic equality between the rich eastern cities and the poorer rural areas. Despite recent agricultural tax breaks, this 79-year-old farmer says he is still not earning in a year what his urban counterparts make in a month. [Tai Lianqing, Farmer]: (Male, Mandarin) "We can't compare with anybody else, but if we compare our own situation now with how it was before, it is many times better. Of course we can't compare with big cities, for example, on income. Those people earn several thousand yuan a month, but we only earn two or three thousand yuan a year. The difference is huge." One migrant worker at a trade fair in Yuwu, Zhejiang Province says he now expects to make at least 5000 yuan a month. [Liang Hongbin, Migrant Worker from Hunan]: (Male, Mandarin) "People like us now want at least around 5000 yuan a month. If we don't get around 5000 yuan a month, each family still has children who need to eat. Then there is the rent to pay, and at the moment commodity prices in Yiwu are increasing. Everything is getting more expensive." One factory owner also in Zhejiang Province says he was forced to lay off almost half his ... China's Luxury Sales Look for Boost from Leadership Change
China observers have had their eyes trained on the upcoming 18th Party Congress, and the power struggle swirling around the Communist Party leadership. But it's not just political changes that may come after the Party meeting, some say it could bring changes in spending patterns on big-ticket luxury items. Bloomberg reported on Wednesday (October 31) that some are expecting an uptick in luxury good sales next year, after the slowing economy dented performances. According to Bloomberg, market watchers say Chinese luxury good buyers%mdashmany of whom purchase pricey items for gifting%mdashhave held back this year. Gifting, and using it to establish "guangxi" or relationships is essential to most business and political relations in China. But the increasing public scrutiny over corruption and flashy spending by those in power has curtailed expensive purchases and lavish receptions by communist officials and their affiliates. The upcoming power transition has also created uncertainty for those looking to establish "guangxi". Personnel shuffles at various levels of the government means some are refraining from gifting, in case those pricey relationships do not bear fruit after the leadership change. Bloomberg reports that luxury good sales may get a boost after then November 8th Party Congress. The meeting is expected to bring greater certainty to the leadership structure. New leaders could also announce measures to stimulate the economy. For more news and videos visit ☛ english.ntdtv ... From: NTDTV Views: 4 1 ratings Time: 01:29 More in News & Politics

Commuters Walk Brooklyn Bridge As NYC Recovery Begins
Commuters cross Brooklyn Bridge on foot as New York City begins recovery from devastating storm Sandy. Full Story: People were back on New York's famous Brooklyn Bridge on Wednesday, after Hurricane Sandy's trail of devastation. The storm left New York without its subway, rail and bus system, forcing many people to either walk, bike or drive into the city. Limited commuter rail service came back on line late Wednesday, and some New York subway service is due to return on Thursday. The New York area's John F. Kennedy and Newark airports reopened with limited service, following thousands of cancelled flights that left travelers stuck for days. LaGuardia Airport, a third major airport serving the nation's busiest airspace, was flooded and remained closed. It will take days or weeks to recover from the huge power and mass transit outages. More than six million customers are without electricity in the region. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said the storm may be the most expensive in US history. New York Begins Arduous Clean Up
New York begins arduous clean up after Hurricane Sandy's trail of devastation. Full Story: New York began an arduous clean-up on Wednesday after superstorm Sandy left severe flooding, power outages and crippled transportation. In lower Manhattan, residents sifted through water-damaged belongings, piling rubbish and debris onto the streets. Several businesses were forced to throw away goods and produce. In some areas, floodwater continued to pour into the streets, as pumps worked to clear buildings left submerged in the Sandy's wake. As the city was hit by a record onslaught, one worker said getting the city back to normal was a daunting task. [Pete Winter, Clean Up Worker]: "By far the worst, it's a catastrophe. It's going to take a long time to recover from it." [Reporter asking: "How long do you estimate?"] "At least two, two and a half weeks before you see anything getting done." Officials say they face unprecedented challenges restoring New York and its flooded subway system. In the meantime, estimates suggest lost economic activity is costing up to 200 million dollars a day. Full Story: Scenes of devastation in New York City, where dozens of homes were reduced to ashes by a fire that erupted during superstorm Sandy. Residents of Breezy Point were left sifting through the rubble on Wednesday, after the blaze tore through some 50 homes. The beach-front area was already submerged in floodwater when the fire erupted. Pat Cannon said her house was lifted off its foundations and moved 25 meters by a massive tidal surge. [Pat Cannon, Breezy Point Resident] "In 22 years living here, I never had a drop of water in my house. Never, nothing. What was the last one? Irene: we packed everything and left anyway, you know. This time I did not pack as much as I usually do, which is why I lost everything." The authorities were on hand to help residents evacuate Breezy Point after salvaging belongings. Sandy was one of the biggest storms to ever hit America and affected millions of people across the east coast. Officials say it could take weeks and billions of dollars to clear damaged areas. TV Related Technologies Developing Fast in China
As China's technological prowess becomes more and more cutting edge the humble TV set is quickly adopting new innovations in the industry. Almost every family in China has a TV and there are now around 100 million digital cable users. Shangyu County in Zhejiang Province resident Chen Dexing says he loves watching TV and he is quick to snap up the latest model as soon as it hits the market. He still has all his old televisions stored away, even his original small black and white model right through to a big color LCD. China now broadcasts in digital, paving the way for 3D and ultra high definition TVs and some enterprising back-yarders have even added wireless internet, computerized applications and even voice control command functions. [Lin Maoxiang, Chairman, Changhong Multimedia Industry Company]:"The TV voice control is convenient for customers to use at night, or for the aged who cannot see clearly." By 2015, analog TV signals will have been phased out, broadcasting in digital alone. And in the next 10 years, China's digital TV industry will be worth some three hundred billion US dollars.
