Chinese Activist Urges Bo Xilai's Eldest Son to Leave China
Chinese democracy activist Tang Baiqiao has urged the first-born son of disgraced official Bo Xilai to leave China, saying he may be in danger there. Tang, a student leader during the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests, developed an unlikely friendship with Li Wangzhi when they attended Columbia University between 2001 and 2003. Li was born to Bo Xilai and his ex-wife Li Danyu, and has been living in China, after working for Citigroup in the United States. In an interview with New York Times last week, Li Danyu recounted Bo Xilai accusing their son of plotting to kill Gu Kaiai%mdashBo Xilai's current wife who's now serving a commuted life sentence for the murder of British businessman Neil Heywood. Earlier this year there were unconfirmed reports that Bo Xilia had put Li Wangzhi under house arrest late last year. In April, Li gave an interview with Bloomberg saying he was in China, but was not under detention. Still, Tang Baiqiao says given the complex factional infighting within the Communist leadership, his former classmate may be in danger. Now living in the US, Tang is urging Li to leave China. [Tang Baiqiao, Chinese Democracy Activist] "From my understanding of the Communist Party's power struggle, and its current situation, these two factors give me the feeling that Li will not do well in China, so I've decided to urge him to leave after some careful thought." In his April interview with Bloomberg, Li Wangzhi said he had not seen Bo Xilai for five years. Li took up his ... From: NTDTV Views: 17 2 ratings Time: 01:44 More in News & Politics

Chinese Migrant Worker's Hilarious Petition Goes Viral
It's an unbelievable piece of satire in a country known for iron-fisted censorship and harsh handling of petitioners. Miao Cuihua, most likely a pseudonym, is doing what countless other migrant workers have done in the past%mdashprotest against unpaid wages. But she's skipped the queue at the petition office. Instead, Miao has created a video that not only demands she receives her quote, "blood and sweat money," but also mocks the Chinese regime's propaganda machine%mdashand it's gone viral. Above her reads "Migrant Worker Unpaid Salary News Conference" Her rambling rhetoric that follows could be lifted from any of China's scripted foreign ministry briefings. [Miao Cuihua, Unpaid Wages News Agency]: "We are regretted to hear that the official of the Bureau of Civil Affairs said 'I represent the government. When I say not to give you money, you won't get money. What can you do? We propose to peacefully, reasonably, and legally request payment. Harmony is precious. Society stability is the priority. So never appeal illegally.'" The language she uses is typical of China's well-educated elite, not a migrant worker who mixes concrete for a living. Her video has been online since May, but in the past few days it's exploded. [Xie Liusheng, Shenzhen City Rights Activist for Migrant Workers]: "It is very interesting. It satirizes the government's corruption from another angle." [Chen Yongmiao, Beijing-based political commentator]: "In China, if those migrant workers don't use this kind of ... One Pussy Riot Member Released
One Pussy Riot member freed on appeal by a Russian court, two others have their sentences upheld. Full Story: A Moscow court has freed one member of the punk band Pussy Riot on appeal on Wednesday, but the sentences for two others were upheld. The three were convicted of hooliganism motivated by religious hatred. Cheers were heard when the Moscow city court announced the suspension of 30-year-old Yekaterina Samusevih's sentence. However, Nadezhda Tokonnikova, 22, and Maria Alyokhina, 24, had their two-year prison sentences upheld. The three were jailed in August for staging an anti-government protest at Moscow's main cathedral. Samutsevich's lawyer argued that her client had been thrown out of the cathedral before it took place. During the appeal hearing, the women had said their actions were political and not meant to offend the faithful. They said that the convictions had discredited the justice system. Family members and other defense lawyers expressed joy over Samutsevich's release, but felt the others should have been as well. This case had sparked widespread international outcry, with many governments condemning the sentences. Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev had suggested that suspended sentences would have been punishment enough. However, President Vladimir Putin defended the sentences last week as just. Defense lawyers said that they would continue the appeal process. For more news and videos visit ☛ ntdtv.org Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Add us on ... The American Music Awards will be celebrating its 40th anniversary this year and will be broadcast live from Los Angeles on November 18. The surviving members of British rock band Led Zeppelin and son of late drummer John Bonham arrived in New York on Tuesday to talk to the press ahead of their US premiere of their concert film "Celebration Day." The group reunited five years ago at London's O2 Arena to pay tribute to Ahmet Ertegun, the founder of Atlantic Records which signed Led Zeppelin in 1968. It was one of the few times the band performed together since breaking up following the death of drummer Bonham in 1980. British Teenager Drinks Cocktail Made With Liquid Nitrogen
British surgeons remove a teenager's stomach to save her life after she drank a cocktail made with liquid nitrogen. Full Story: British surgeons have removed a teenager's stomach to save her life after she drank a cocktail made with liquid nitrogen. The 18-year-old woman, named by newspapers as Gaby Scanlon, drank the cocktail during a night out with friends on Thursday. After suffering breathlessness and gastric pain, she was rushed to hospital in the city of Lancaster, where she was diagnosed with a perforated stomach. Normally the liquid nitrogen should burn off the drink, but in this case it did not happen. [Professor Shaun Fisher, Lancaster University] "It's very surprising that there are no regulations for selling liquid nitrogen like that. It's quite shocking." Gastroenterologist Colin Harris said that in spite of her operation, the woman should be able to live a relatively normal life. [Dr. Colin Harris, Gastroenterologist]: "She should be able to live a relatively normal life. She'll have to eat smaller meals more frequently, perhaps have to take some nutritional supplements. But she should be able to live a relatively normal life." For now, Gaby Scanlon remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition and police have launched an investigation into the incident. Skydive From Space Postponed
The attempt to set a new world record by skydiving from space has been postponed due to strong winds. Full Story: Felix Baumgartner will have to wait another day or so before breaking a world sky diving record. The 43 year old "Fearless Felix" had planned to jump from an altitude of 120000 feet -- but technicians said strong winds would have prevented his ultra thin balloon from functioning. [Felix Baumgartner, Skydiver] "And that was a total disappointment, honestly. But as long as we have a spare balloon, and as long as we have more launch opportunities, I'm good." [Art Thompson, Technical Project Director] "The reality is that we have a person's life at stake, and so our primary concern is making sure that we're launching in the best conditions possible to be able to get him into the air." Baumgartner wants to break the current record for highest-altitude freefall of more than 102000 feet. If successful he would be the first parachutist to break the sound barrier. A Red Bull Stratos team spokesperson said the earliest next launch attempt would be Thursday. Nobel Prize Awarded to Quantum Physics Researchers
The Nobel Prize in Physics 2012 is awarded to two researchers in the field of quantum physics. This year's Nobel Prize in Physics goes to Serge Haroche from France and David J. Wineland from USA, for their research in quantum physics. Their work is described by the Nobel Committee as "ground-breaking experimental methods that enable measuring and manipulation of individual quantum systems." The researchers have broken new ground by being able to observe and measure quantum particles -- extremely small particles - without destroying them. This field of research is called quantum optics, and focusses on the fundamental interaction between matter and light. According to the Nobel Committee, the work of Haroche and Wineland has "enabled this field of research to take the very first steps towards building a new type of super fast computer based on quantum physics." They add "Perhaps the quantum computer will change our everyday lives in this century in the same radical way as the classical computer did in the last century." In the past, quantum physics remained highly theoretical, since it attempts to describe incredibly small particles where the normal laws of physics cease to exist. However, this year's Nobel laureates have succeeded in observing and measuring a part of this microscopic world. The two laureates will share the prize money of one million dollars. Last week on China Focus, we talked about former Chongqing Party Secretary Bo Xilai. He was kicked out of the Communist Party on September 28, and he'll soon be facing criminal charges. We talked about what Bo is likely to be charged with%mdashand that some of his actual crimes will be kept hidden from the public. Now it appears that Bo is going from being protected by his allies in the Party to being made a scapegoat. What's this about? And will it work? Angela Merkel's Visit to Greece Triggers Protest
It was Angela Merkel's first visit to Greece since the economic crisis in 2009 that crippled the Greek economy. The German Chancellor's visit was short, but the effect was lasting. After her six-hour visit to the Greek capital the streets of Athens were in chaos. During Merkel's visit she reaffirmed her support for the government of Antonis Samaras. It also showed the anger of austerity protesters, who took to the streets to protest the Greek government's austerity policies. Greece's Foreign Minister saw Merkel off at the Athens International Airport. [Angela Merkel, German Chancellor]: "I wish you all good luck and much power." Merkel acknowledged the pain Greeks are suffering, but said Greece was on the right path towards reform and upward progress. Samaras said he would keep pushing through with reforms in order, he said, to keep Greece in the euro. But, he confided in Merkel that the recession and unemployment were choking the country. My husband divorced me because he disagreed with me opening such a restaurant and living with drug addicts." Seventeen former addicts are now employed at the restaurant.
