Google's Faces "Horrible" Quarterly Results After Recent Highs
Analyst says Google's disappointing quarterly results will set the company back, and possibly distract the company's management. Full story: Investors used to steady rapid growth from Google Inc. were stunned on Thursday. The Internet giant's quarterly results fell well short of Wall Street's expectations, wiping more than 9 percent off its market value. The disappointing numbers on Thursday came hours ahead of schedule in a rare instance of premature filing. Google blamed the misfire on an unauthorized submission by its financial printers, RR Donnelley & Sons Co, but later confirmed the numbers'. The report revealed a weakening in Google'sInternet advertising and continual losses from its cell phone business, Motorola Mobility. Google is the world's No. 1 Internet search engine, but it finished Thursday's regular trading session down 8 percent at $695. Some analysts say the preemptive release of its numbers spurred confusion and exacerbated its stock price decline. [Rob Cyran, Columnist, Thomson Reuters Breakingviews]: "Google's mobile operations had a horrible result. They had a loss of about $500 million. That's bad on two reasons. First, Google will have to spend some time fixing it. And second is management could be distracted." Google executives said in a conference call on Thursday that the company's businesses were still doing well. They also anticipated growth as consumers of the mobile platform increase. Chief Executive Larry Page said that Google's mobile ... From: NTDTV Views: 157 3 ratings Time: 02:19 More in News & Politics

11-Month-Old Panda Cub Takes First Steps
An 11-week-old panda cub is is learning to walk this week at his vet exam at the San Diego Zoo. The panda cub gets put on the floor by his caretakers and tries to crawl forward on all fours. Just when he looks like he will start walking, his back legs give out and he rolls onto his side. [PK Robbins, Senior Vet at San Diego Zoo]: "I would say he's making progress. He's kind of at that awkward toddler stage where some limbs are working better than others. Certainly the front legs want to get up and go but the back legs sort of got a little bit left behind. But he's definitely learning, he's getting those skill sets that he needs and he's a pretty active little dude." The panda cub squeaks and rolls around the floor in his attempts to be mobile. He is expected to be able to walk on all four legs in just a few weeks. It will still be at least a few more months before he is able enough to venture into the panda exhibit. Only 1600 giant pandas are believed to exist in the wild, and the species is primarily threatened by habitat loss. San Diego Zoo Global, in conjunction with Chinese panda experts, continue to work on science-based panda conservation programs. Senior Lebanese Intelligence Official Killed in Car Bomb Attack
A huge car bomb in Beirut on Friday claimed the life of senior Lebanese Intelligence Official, Wissam al-Hassan. Hassan led the investigation that implicated Syria and Hezbollah in the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri. He also helped uncover a bomb plot that led to the arrest and indictment of former Lebanese Minister Michel Samaha. That marked a setback for Damascus and its Lebanese allies including Hezbollah. [Amine Gemayel, Former Lebanese President]: "The loss of General Hassan is a loss for all of Lebanon, because all the people know the efforts he put in to guarantee the safety of the Lebanese." Hassan was no ordinary officer. He was a close aide to Hariri, a Sunni Muslim who was killed in a 2005 bomb attack. [Samir Geagea, Lebanese Christian Leader]: "He was one of the most serious security officials who was uncovering plots, and the most recent was the Michel Samaha case which he uncovered. Could it be anymore clear about which side is behind the killing today?'' The bomb that killed Hassan exploded in a busy street during rush hour and officials say it killed seven other people and wounded about 80.. The attack prompted Sunni Muslims to take to the streets in areas across the country, burning tires in protest. Discovering China - The Three Kingdoms
At the end of the Han Dynasty, the Imperial Army managed to crush the Yellow Turban Rebellion. But the generals, given the task of defeating them, grew strong and saw an opportunity to seize the throne for themselves. The three key players in this quest for control over China were Cao Cao%mdashwho served as Captain of Cavalry in suppressing the Yellow Turbans, Liu Bei a distant relative of the Han imperial family, and Sun Quan who had been known by the title, 'the general who attacks barbarians.' In 205 AD, Cao Cao became the dictator of northern China. Liu Beis stronghold was in the area around what is modern day Sichuan province, while Sun Quan was based in the southeast. Cao Cao had the ambition to conquer all of China. He started to march his army south. Outnumbered by Cao Caos large army, Sun Quan and Liu Bei formed an alliance and their forces of 50000 soldiers met Cao Caos 200000 at a place called the Red Cliff on the Yangtze River in the winter of 208 AD. This battle established the power structure of the divided China for the next 50 years. The Battle of the Red Cliff started on the river. Cao Cao, his men tired and ill from the march south, were forced to retreat to the northern bank of the river. Liu Beis military strategist, Zhuge Liang and Sun Quans general, Zhou Yu noted that Cao Caos boats are moored tightly together%mdashpossibly to stop his men getting seasick. They came up with a plan to burn the fleet. However their plan would not work unless the wind is on their ... From: NTDTV Views: 154 11 ratings Time: 03:23 More in Shows

State Media Express Rare Criticism of Labor Camp Sentence
China's Communist regime has a tight grip on media in the country. That's why it's unusual to see reports like these -- newspapers like the Global Times and Beijing News criticizing the Party's decision to sentence Ren Jianyu to a labor camp. In August last year, Ren was sentenced to reeducation through labor for negative online comments he made about now disgraced politician, Bo Xilai. Ren's father submitted a court appeal, which was heard last Wednesday. Two days later, the People's Daily said being sentenced for critical statements made online was, "outdated and goes against today's freedom of speech and rule of law." According to Tang Baiqiao, head of the New York based Democracy Academy of China, the Communist Party strategically allowed the publication of such editorials. [Tang Baiqiao, Head Teacher, Democracy Academy of China]: "This is a relatively easy issue to understand. After all, the CCP said they want to engage in some political reform. They want to take this case as an opportunity to show they sincerely want political reform, because the pressure is coming from civilians." There have been soaring demands from the public to reform the labor camp system. In August a children's book author Zheng Yuanjie created an online poll about labor camps. Nearly 20 thousand people participated and 98 percent voted to stop the system. The day before Ren's court appeal, the Chinese State Council released a white paper on judicial reform. The document admitted problems with ... From: NTDTV Views: 55 1 ratings Time: 02:22 More in News & Politics

WTO Rejects China's Appeal on Illegal Tariffs of US Steel
On Thursday, the World Trade Organization rejected China's appeal of a decision saying the regime imposed illegal tariffs on US exports of a specialty steel. The steel in question is "grain-oriented electrical steel," made in Pennsylvania and Ohio, two battleground states in the upcoming US presidential election. President Barack Obama's trade representative, Ron Kirk, said in a statement, "Today we are again plainly stating that we will continue to take every step necessary to ensure that China plays by the rules and does not unfairly restrict exports of US products." The WTO decision may be a timely victory for the President, who has been fending off accusations from his Republican opponent, Mitt Romney, that he is too soft on the Chinese regime. However, the specialty steel case is a minor one compared with other current trade disputes with China. Both President Obama and Mitt Romney have promised to put more pressure on the Chinese regime. Chinese Workers the Most Stressed in the World: Regus Research
Consulting firm Regus recently released its research on stress levels of workers around the world. It says 75% of Chinese workers surveyed indicated their feelings of stress have grown in the past year--topping the global list. What's the source of the stress? According to Regus, it's job, personal finance, and bosses. A Shanghai customer service worker says his stress comes from long work hours. [Cang Yue, Shanghai Worker] "There is quite a lot of pressure in Shanghai, we have to leave early in the morning and get home late at night. There's not many places for leisure, and my pay isn't' good. I work all day and there's no time for personal development or learning about new things." One Beijing resident told NTD that growing costs of living is what's weighing them down. [Li Wei, Beijing Resident] "In just four or five years, the cost of buying a home tripled or quadrupled. We earn just about 10000 yuan per month, even for someone with good pay, if we save up everything, it'll take us three months to save up money to purchase just 35 square feet of space." Regus says Shanghai and Beijing have the most stressed workers, with 80% and 67% respectively saying they feel more stress over the past year. As a comparison, the global average is 48%. China Rattles Sabers in East China Sea
Today, China's navy, fishery administration, and marine surveillance agency conducted drills in the East China Sea. It was meant to be a show of military might but some ships involved just didn't pack as much punch as others. Chinese state-run media was quick to report the comprehensive battle-readiness of the fleet in the event of quote, "emergencies related to the protection of maritime interests and territorial sovereignty." [Shen Hao, Commander of Naval Exercise]: "This exercise is aimed at effectively safeguarding China's territorial sovereignty and maritime rights to test and enhance our joint law enforcement capability at sea." The sovereignty issue refers to China and Japan's spate over a string of uninhabited islands in the East China Sea, called Senkaku by Japan and Diaoyu by China. Japan recently attempted to purchase the islands from its private Japanese owners. Chinese opposition to Japan's claim has just quieted down after weeks of often-violent anti-Japanese riots. Many saw the lack of police presence during the riots as being tantamount to the regime's support, fanning the flames of nationalism, and creating a distraction from the heated struggles within the Communist Party over the upcoming once-in-a-decade change of leadership. The exact location of Friday's drills is unknown, but footage shows it was close to shore, far away from the actual islands. Taiwanese Man Expose Illegal Organ Trade in China
There has been mounting international pressure on the Chinese regime over allegations it is harvesting organs from prisoners of conscience. A former Taiwanese investor in China says the Taiwanese government has so far chosen to remain silent, and so this week, he decided to take out an ad to raise awareness of the issue. Shen Po-sheng's ad appeared in the Wednesday edition of Taiwan's Economic Daily. It describes claims that the Chinese Communist Party has been harvesting and selling organs from persecuted groups including Uighurs and practitioners of the Falun Gong spiritual practice. [Shen Po-sheng, Former Investor in China] "Taking organs from living people is intolerable. It's not something a human being would do. It's unimaginable a person can be killed and their organs sold for 1.2million renmibi ($190000). I cannot take this." Chinese authorities have admitted to relying on executed prisoners as a main source of organs for transplants. But rights groups, like Doctors Against Forced Organ Harvesting, says those alone cannot support the 10000 transplants that happen each year. Shen said the Tianjin Oriental Organ Transplant Center he visited to see a friend was flourishing with business. [Shen Po-sheng, Former Investor in China] "Each room had patients going in and out. There were a lot of foreigners, from Pakistan, India, Japan. I heard them speak. Each patient is matched against four so-called "donors." World's Top Wingsuit Flyers Compete in China
Daredevils hurled themselves off the top of a mountain to glide across one of China's most dramatic landscapes on Thursday. They were competing in the final of the Wingsuit Flying World Championships. Specially designed suits with flaps between the limbs allow the wearer to glide like a flying fox. Wingsuit competitors jumped from the 4600-foot peak of Tianmen mountain in Zhangjiajie, Hunan Province. Each of the eight competitors in Thursday's final followed a looping course through a valley, past a cable way, then opened their parachutes to land on a mountain road acting as the finish line. Each competitor performed the dramatic dive twice, with the fastest time winning the competition. Thursday's winner was South African Julian Bouille, who took the first wingsuit flying world record of 23.41 seconds. In second place came Norwegian Espen Fadnes with 23.55 seconds, followed by British flyer James Boole with 23.84 seconds, according to state media reports. The championship involved 15 of the world's top wingsuit flyers. Wingsuit flying is one of the world's most dangerous extreme sports, and only 20 people worldwide are qualified to take part in the competition. China Focus - Is China's Huawei a Security Threat to the US?
Is Huawei really a threat? Or is this just US protectionism masquerading as a national security issue? Huawei is the world's biggest manufacturer of telecommunications equipment. It has customers in 140 countries and its equipment is used in more than half of Europe's 4G high speed mobile phone networks. But it has come under scrutiny for its lack of corporate transparency and possible links to China's People's Liberation Army. The US Congress sees it as a national security threat. A recent report by the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence released October 8, 2012 warns that if companies like Huawei become significant players in US telecom, it poses a serious risk of cyber espionage.
