Wang Lijun Tried in Secret, One Day Ahead of Schedule
Wang Lijun, the former police chief of Chongqing, was put on trial in secret today, one day before his publicly announced trial date. Several western media, including the Telegraph and the Associated Press, have cited interviews with Wang's lawyer, who said Monday's hearing was for charges involving state secrets, charges of defection and bending the law for personal gains. The secret trial took only a few hours, according to Wang's lawyer Wang Yuncai, no relation. She says the remainder of the charges against Wang%mdashtaking bribes and abuse of power%mdashwould be heard on Tuesday. Wang Lijun unveiled the shaky inner workings of the Communist Party when he fled to the US Consulate in Chengdu in February. It was the first in a chain of events that saw the downfall of the once powerful politician Bo Xilai. Bo's wife, Gu Kailai, was convicted last month of murdering British businessman Neil Heywood. Wang's secret hearing on Monday involved his alleged cover up of that murder. State-run media had earlier reported Wang's trial would be open. The BBC reported today that foreign journalists would not be given access to the proceedings on Tuesday. It is almost certain Wang would be found guilty of his charges. State-run Xinhua had reported that evidence against him was "clear and abundant". Attention will now be directed to how the Communist Party leadership deals with Wang's former boss Bo Xilai. He was sacked as the Party Secretary of Chongqing and kicked out of the 25-member Politburo ... From: NTDTV Views: 21 2 ratings Time: 01:40 More in News & Politics

China Focus - Were Chinese Authorities Behind Anti-Japan Protests?
The Chinese public has taken up the anti-Japan cause on a massive scale. Tens or even hundreds of thousands of protesters in dozens of cities across the country. They're angry about the Japanese government's announcement last week that it will buy the Senkaku islands%mdashcalled the Senkaku islands in Chinese%mdashfrom their private owners. The islands are in the East China sea, near Taiwan, Japan, and China%mdashand claimed by all three. They're valuable for shipping lanes and fishing%mdashbut it's pretty obvious from this footage that there's more to it than that. As the protests continue, there are reports that Chinese authorities are supporting, or even instigating, the demonstrations. Who's behind the protests, and will they escalate further? United Nations human rights investigators report a new list of Syrians suspected of committing war crimes. Full Story: United Nations human rights investigators reported on Monday a new list of Syrians suspected of committing war crimes The secret list will be used to prosecute suspects in the future. The independent investigators speak of "an extraordinary body of evidence". [Paulo Pinheiro, Independent Human Rights Investigator]: "We have collected a formidable and extraordinary body of evidence which will remain in the custody of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. Information collected, where consent was provided, will be available for future national and international justice mechanisms." The report says that Syrian government forces and allied militia have committed war crimes including murder and torture of civilians, in what appears to be a state-directed policy. [Paulo Pinheiro, Independent Human Rights Investigator]: "A second confidential list of individuals and units believed to be responsible for violations is being provided to the High Commissioner of Human Rights. The Commission considers it improper to publicly release the names due to the lower standard of proof employed by commissions of inquiry as compared to a court of law." Pinheiro did not mention if there were any Syrian rebels on the list. But he did say that the increased presence of Islamist militants in Syria tends to radicalize rebels who have already committed crimes. The ... Hezbollah Call For More Protest Over Anti-Islam Film
As protests against US embassies spread around the Muslim world, we take a deeper look at some of the causes behind the unrest. Full Story: Hezbollah TV shows the head of Lebanon's militant Shia movement calling for more protests against the US Hezbollah is an Islamic militant group based in Lebanon, and is supported financially by Iran and Syria. Demonstrations against US interests have spread around the Muslim world in recent days. This includes Libya, Egypt, Sudan, Iraq, Iran, Lebanon, Bahrain, Afghanistan, Yemen, Kashmir, Malaysia, Indonesia, Nigeria, Tunisia, and Jerusalem and the West Bank. The protests are mostly aimed at US embassies, and have been fueled by a crude anti-Islam film made in California. The worst violence was in Libya. The US ambassador and three other staff members were killed when an armed mob stormed the consulate. Evidence has been growing that the attack was pre-planned by Islamist militants. Now US officials have intercepted communications between al-Qaida and the Libya based militant group Ansar al-Sharia. It is thought that the attack was planned for the 11th anniversary of 9/11, using the anti-Islam video as a cover up. Mohamed al-Magariaf, the president of Libya's parliament, says military action may be used against the militants. Outside of Libya, the worst violence was in Sudan, where protesters targeted US, British and German embassies. The demonstrations in Sudan, Syria and Iran are reported to have been backed by the government. In ... From: NTDTV Views: 113 7 ratings Time: 01:58 More in News & Politics

Prince William, Kate Middleton in Solomon Islands
Prince William plays soccer with some locals while he and Kate tour the Pacific Islands. Full Story: Prince William played soccer with some children of Solomon Islands on Monday, while he and Catherine continued their tour of Asia and the Pacific. The two arrived after exploring Borneo over the weekend, travelling amidst a row over topless photos take of Kate Middleton, published by French magazine Closer. Lawyers for the royal family announced they plan to sue the photographer who took the snaps of the couple sunbathing in a private villa in Provence, and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are seeking an injunction against Closer. Despite this, Italian magazine Chi today published more photos from that set. Max Clifford, a British publicity guru, said that the royal family is right to go to court. [Max Clifford, Publicist]: "If they let it die down people would think 'Well, we can get away with this' and maybe other people will be tempted. At least the official message is coming out from the royal family, from William and from Kate: 'We are not happy about this. This is not right, please give us and allow us a little bit of a private life.' So for that reason alone I think they are doing the right thing." The controversy did not make the couple camera-shy. William posed for photographs in Honaira, capital of the islands, and the two met locals on the island of Mauru. Soyuz Capsule Returns Safely From International Space Station
Watch the Soyuz capsule land in a cloud of dust as three crew members return safely from the International Space Station. Full Story: The Soyuz capsule lands safely in Kazakhstan after returning from the International Space Station. The two Russian cosmonauts and one US astronaut recover slowly from a long journey and 123 days in space. Everything is well and a NASA TV commentator calls the touchdown a "Bull's eye landing." Three other International Space Station crew members remain in orbit. They will be joined by another trio in October, with the launch also taking place in Kazakhstan. The International Space Station is a $100 billion research complex, orbiting 240 miles above the Earth, and involving 15 countries. The United States retired its space shuttles last year and is now dependent on Russia to fly astronauts. Michael Kors Spring/Summer 2013 Collection
Blue skies ahead at Michael Kors Spring 2013 runway show at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York. Michael Kors debuted his Spring/Summer 2013 collection at the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York on Wednesday, and the Long Island-native chose to offer a hope from the dreary winters that many people experience. [Michael Kors, Fashion Designer] "Spring clothes arrive, crazingly enough, at the end of January and February and in many cities in the world unfortunately it's gray, it's cold, it's kind of gross. So for me the biggest thing that I wanted to talk about here is optimism and these are clothes that - you know, have kind of a big city polish and sophistication to them." The American designer mentioned his influences from spending time on the West Coast, which could provide a much sunnier disposition than the winters of New York. His collection, which had 65 sportswear looks for men and women, had many athletic designs, and used many graphic stripes. The wear were form-fitting, showing off toned bodies, while black became a staple along with black and white prints on colorful tops. In terms of his fashion show setup, Michael Kors said he was influenced by his work as a judge for the Lifetime reality show "Project Runway." [Michael Kors, Fashion Designer] "As a designer I normally don't go to fashion shows, so suddenly for the last ten seasons I know what it's like to sit at a fashion show, so I think it's probably made me shorten my shows, make them quicker," Kors ... Homecoming for Imprisoned Swedish Journalists
Swedish journalists Martin Schibbey and Johan Persson land in Sweden after a traumatic 14 months in an Ethiopian prison. During their incarceration they were subjected to psychological torture and fake executions. Now, after spending a few days in Turkey recovering from their ordeal, they're back in the spotlight in Sweden. But the two say their newfound freedom is taking some getting used to. [Martin Schibbey, Journalist]: "Suddenly you are thrown out where you can do whatever you want. When we checked in at our first hotel in Istanbul - Can we go out on the balcony? Can we move freely in the city?" The two were held at Ethiopia's Kaliti prison - a facility for hardened criminals. They say their 11-year sentence for terrorism is an outrage, as they were merely journalists covering a story in Ethiopia. [Johan Persson, Journalist]: "When you have been in prison for fourteen months and get to hear all the time that you are a terrorist you almost start to believe it and then the important thing was to say, "Come on we are no terrorists! We are journalists. We shouldn't be here, we are not criminals." Martin says that one of the biggest challenges in prison was not to lose one's humanity. But he adds that, in a way, the experience has enriched him professionally. Archaeologists enter a Mayan tomb in Chiapas that has been sealed for 1500 years. Previously seen only with a tiny camera, the tomb is believed to contain the remains of Mayan ruler Pakal. Full Story: Archaeologists entered the tomb of an ancient Mayan ruler for the first time last week, revealing elaborate red frescoes, pottery and pieces of a funerary shroud. The tomb has been sealed for 1500 years. It was first discovered in 1999, located 19 feet deep from the top of a temple in the Mayan city of Palenque, nestled in the lush jungle hills of the southern Mexican state of Chiapas. Initial explorations of the ancient vault were previously only possible via remote-controlled cameras. When archaeologists finally entered the tomb through a tiny side entrance, they revealed priceless pottery pieces and a bright red mural that details mythical Mayan characters. [Arnoldo Gonzalez, Archaeologist]: "On three of the walls there are remains of a mural painting which are people standing with dark hair pieces and sandals. And on the floor there are ceramic pieces and pieces from the mural." A team of 60 people, including archaeologists, restorers, chemists, architects, photographers and graphic designers, will be working to explore and preserve the tomb. However, only two people will be allowed inside at any time, wearing a special uniform in order to maintain a temperature of 77 degrees Fahrenheit.
