Old Paris Tower Block Torn Down
French authorities tear down an old 14 storey tower block on the outskirts of Paris. Full story: A large 14-story tower block on the outskirts of Paris was demolished in a matter of seconds on Wednesday. French authorities brought the building down as a crowd of curious spectators looked on. But the authorities had not thought about the wind direction. The wind blew a thick cloud of dust onto spectators gathered in a nearby stadium. The building was opened in the 1960s as part of a large social housing development but had fallen short of modern standards. French media reported that a 280 million euro local housing project is ongoing in the area. The building was the last of three similar ones to be destroyed in recent years. Some locals wish that the buildings had been left standing. [Antonio De Sousa, Onlooker]: "Now it's really sad to see the last one go. While there was still one standing it was all right, it was still Balzac. Now everything has been torn down we've lost our youth. It's even more than that because we have shared so many things between us with our colleagues and so on." Protests Continue in Hong Kong over "Brainwashing" Course
Protests in Hong Kong against the national education course show no signs of dying down. Those calling the course as an attempt to "brainwash" Hong Kong students camped out in front of the government building on Tuesday evening. The Civil Alliance Against the National Education has been organizing the protests. Demonstrators are angry at Hong Kong authorities refusing to cancel the course. Opponents are now calling for the Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying to step down. [Joshua Wong, Scholar-ism Protest Group Organizer]: "We see that Leung Chun-ying is hiding from the public like a turtle. He won't see us. Scholar-ism is urging everyone here to stay overnight. Let's see how Leung will come to work tomorrow." Hong Kong media reported that around 300 people stayed overnight. Eight people are also on hunger strikes, some for more than three days. Teachers opposing the course are also planning their own actions. [Wong Hak Lim, Vice President, Hong Kong Professional Teacher's Union] "The Alliance is clearly telling the government and the public that we will immediately start a movement of non-cooperation, including going on strike. We will plan this carefully and announce here that the strike will deal an effective blow [to the course]." The national education course is being rolled out in primary schools this week with the start of school. It's meant to teach kids about things like national identity, but opponents say the handbook for the course is unduly biased towards the ... Online Talk Curbed After Xi Jinping Cancels on Clinton Last Minute
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton left Beijing on Wednesday without meeting Xi Jinping, China's leader-in-waiting. According to the AFP, an unnamed US official said Chinese authorities notified the US late Tuesday evening that the Wednesday meeting would not happen. The official said Xi had also cancelled meetings with Singapore's Prime Minister and with Russian diplomats. A US official told the Wall Street Journal that the last-minute cancellation was because Xi Jinping hurt his back. Other reports say he had a scheduling conflict%mdashdespite Xinhua news having reported the night before that Clinton was on Xi's meeting schedule. Chinese dissident artist Ai Weiwei Tweeted that Beijing's Number 301 Military Hospital is under martial law. This hospital is where senior Chinese leaders go to get medical treatment. In the absence of an official explanation, China's internet is rife with speculation. And internet police are curbing discussions on the topic. Searches for the name "Xi Jinping" now turn up limited results on Sina Weibo%mdashChina's Twitter-like microblog service. The same goes for the term "meeting cancelled." Senior China analyst Heng He told NTD earlier today that it's unlikely the cancellation was made to embarrass Hillary Clinton%mdashin part because Xi Jinping canceled other meetings too. Heng He says only a serious health problem or an urgent political crisis would prompt Xi to suddenly cancel the meetings. When asked about the cancellation at a regular press briefing ... No Progress on Syria, Island Disputes as Clinton Ends China Trip
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton met with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and his likely successor vice Premier Li Keqiang in Beijing today (September 5). Clinton's visit comes as the US eyes a strategic pivot in the Asia Pacific region. The trip is set against an ongoing territorial dispute between the Chinese regime and its neighbors over islands in the South and East China Seas. Beijing has asked the US to keep out of those disputes. The US, on the other hand, is urging Chinese leaders to engage in multilateral talks to settle the claims. China has also blocked UN measures aimed at resolving the bloodshed in Syria. US and other western powers want to impose sanctions on Bashir al-Assad's regime to force him to end the violence. Clinton's trip has done little to resolve the differences. [Hillary Clinton, US Secretary of State]: "With respect to Syria, it's no secret that we've been disappointed by Russia and China's actions blocking tougher UN Security Council resolutions." Despite the divide, during a joint news conference earlier on Wednesday, Clinton and Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi stressed the need for steady ties. The remarks underscored efforts by both sides to contain quarrels, especially as they navigate political transitions at home. After meeting with Wen Jiabao and his deputy, Clinton concluded her two-day visit, possibly her last as secretary of state. Chongqing's Deputy Police Chief Arrested over Corruption
Chongqing's second most powerful police officer is under arrest. Tang Jianhua worked side by side with Wang Lijun, the ousted police chief who is now facing charges of bribery, defection and abuse of power. Tang Jianhua was arrested back on August 13th on suspicion of taking bribes, but the news was only announced on Tuesday. His wife, whose surname is Huang, was also taken in by police on August 22nd, but there's no information why. Tang Jianhua served as the deputy director of Chongqing Public Security Bureau in early 2010 when he was part of the "Beat the Black" anti-crime campaign, which triggered accusations of extracting confessions under torture and miscarriages of justice. Tang is the latest official from the city of Chongqing to fall from grace. Former city Party chief Bo Xilai was removed after his right hand man, police chief Wang Lijun fled to a US Consulate. Bo's wife, Gu Kailai, was recently found guilty for the murder of British businessman Neil Heywood. Wang Lijun Finally Charged in Chengdu
Wang Lijun, the police chief who fled to the US consulate in Chengdu last February, has been officially charged. Wang's flight revealed an ongoing power struggle within the Chinese Communist Party. State-run Xinhua News Agency reported today that Wang has been prosecuted for defection, abuse of power, taking bribes, and "bending the law for personal gain." This latest development comes after weeks of speculation about Wang's fate%mdashafter Gu Kailai, the wife of his former boss Bo Xilai, was convicted of murdering British businessman Neil Heywood. Xinhua said that Wang knew of the murder, but illegally protected Gu from legal liability. Wang was also accused of illegally using technical investigative measures%mdashthough Xinhua did not elaborate what this charge relates to. After he fled to the US Consulate, rumors surfaced that Bo Xilai had instructed him to wire-tap phone calls of Chinese leader Hu Jintao. The charges against Wang have been filed at the Chengdu Intermediate People's Court. The city's procuratorate says evidence against him is "clear and abundant," according to Xinhua. No date has been announced for Wang's trial. Japan and China's Battle For Senkaku Islands
A mostly uninhabited island group, known as the Senkaku islands in Japan and Diaoyu in China, is at the center of a deal between the Japanese family who owns it and the Japanese central government. Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Osamu Fujimura confirmed negotiations at a press conference saying, "We are exchanging views with the landowners in various ways, but that process is ongoing." On Wednesday, Japanese media reported that the landowners and the government have agreed on a price of $26 million. The Chinese regime does not recognize the Japanese family's ownership of the islands and claims that the islands are part of its territory. In response to media reports, China's Foreign Ministry says it will take action to protect its territory. [Hong Lei, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman]: "China's will and determination to protest its territorial sovereignty is unswerving. China is following developments closely, and will take necessary measures to protect its national territorial sovereignty." The group of five islands and rocky outcrops lies more than 1200 miles from Tokyo but only 124 miles from Taiwan. According to a treaty made with the United States after Japan's defeat in World War 2, the islands reverted back to Japanese control in 1972. In August, a group of protesters from China and Taiwan landed on one of the islands and were arrested by Japanese authorities. The next week, Japanese protesters did the same, sparking a wave of violent, anti-Japanese protests ... From: NTDTV Views: 24 3 ratings Time: 01:34 More in News & Politics

Students Bring Their Own Desks and Chairs to School
In some of the rural villages in Hubei Province in China, desks and chairs are in short supply. So students have taken to carrying their own furniture to school, though sometimes they get a little help from an older brother, sister, or even grandpa. There are more than 5000 students in Shunhe town's primary and middle schools, but the government only supplied 2000 desks. That leaves 3000 children to bring their own desks from home. One five-year-old student uses a desk and chair that belonged to her dad. He also used it in primary school twenty years ago. The desk is too big for her, but it is better than nothing. [Miss Chen, Villager of Lindian Village in Shunhe County]: "It is like this here. Everyone has to bring their own desk in our area; everyone brings their own desks. The school doesn't have desks. It has been like this for decades, it's always like this." [Member of the Shunhe Village Committee]: "There are some [students] in our school [who have to bring their own desks]." The school buildings are old and falling apart. In some areas, there isn't even enough money to pay the teachers. A former professor of Shandong University said that the government has spent a huge amount of money on the military and what's called "stability maintenance," but not much on education. [Sun Wen Guang, Former Professor, Shandong University]: "A large amount of money was appropriated to "maintain stability" and on projects such as the 290 billion yuan Olympics, but very little money ... Joined by cast-mates James Franco, Ashley Benson, and Rachel Korine, the young stars boarded a water taxi from Venice Lido's Hotel Excelsior after a dinner with the cast and crew of their new movie. Their night out was a bit more conservative than their behavior in their movie, where the four girls are jailed after trying to rob a restaurant to pay for their spring break vacation and are then enlisted to do dirty work for a drug dealing James Franco.
