Chinese Banks Boycott Finance Meetings in Japan
Tension between China and Japan over territorial waters in the East China Sea is now being reflected in the international finance arena. The Wall Street Journal reported that several Chinese banks have pulled out of the annual World Bank and International Monetary Fund meeting to be held in Tokyo next week. Some banks are also boycotting Sibos, another big finance industry meeting to be held in Osaka at the end of the month. The banks have not given any reasons for their last minute withdrawals, but relations between China and Japan have soured in recent months as their spats over the Diaoyu, or Senkaku Islands escalated. Some analysts say China's withdrawals from such important global economic-finance forums over regional squabbling may be signs that China is not yet ready for the bigger role it has long sought in the World Bank and IMF. ASEAN Maritime Forum Opens in Manila - China Sea Dispute On Agenda
Diplomats and security experts tackle security and regional co-operation at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) third maritime forum in Manila, which opened on Wednesday. Though the meeting focused on protecting marine resources and securing trade routes, the territorial disputes in the South China Sea became a hot topic. Four ASEAN members - Brunei, Malaysia, Philippines and Vietnam - all claim parts of the South China Sea, setting them against China which claims sovereignty over much of the region. Philippines Vice-president, the forum's keynote speaker is optimistic about a peaceful solution. [Jejomar Binay, Philippines Vice President, Forum Keynote Speaker]: "Isn't it that there is a new opening, isn't it that the incoming president (of China) is saying, he is implying, that they are also supporting a peaceful and diplomatic solution to the problem?" Chinese President-in-waiting Xi Jinping last month said China was committed to resolving territorial differences with its neighbors through peaceful, friendly relations. Australian security expert Professor Sam Bateman says potential risks are higher in the dispute between China and Japan. [Professor Sam Bateman, Australian Ocean Resources and Security Expert]: "The situation over the Senkaku/Diaoyu islands is potentially more serious, because you've got bilateral, you've got two big countries, sort of sabre-rattling at each other." Who Packed A Punch In The First US Presidential Debate?
Voters in Washington, New York and LA respond to the first US presidential debate between Obama and Romney. Full Story: Americans tuned in to the first presidential debate on Wednesday night, as Barack Obama and Mitt Romney went head to head. At a bar in Washington, revellers gathered for a debate party. Some even partook in a game of bingo, marking off scorecards where popular talking points were mentioned. [Kelly Archung]: "I wasn't actually planning on hearing anything from Mitt Romney that was actually articulated as far as policies are concerned because I think in his track record he just lacks in that but I think tonight, like, he actually stepped up his game a little bit but not enough of what he needed to do." It was a more sober affair at this New York college, where viewers found both candidates impressive. But as to who came out on top, the reaction was mixed. [Michael Senders, Student]: "I was very impressed by Governor Romney's performance, specifically because although it might be criticized by many people I liked his aggressive approach and how he attacked a lot of the ideas and a lot of the topics that were to be discussed." [Camille O'Brien, Student]: "President Obama, he did - he is always a great speaker, I think he could have done better tonight honestly. I am a fan of him, I like a lot of his policies, he seemed nervous for some reason and almost let some questions threw him off, and Mitt Romney seemed to throw him off as well." Nicki Minaj Reportedly Threatens Mariah Carey during Idol
A new video shows Nicki Minaj in a heated exchange with Mariah Carey at "American Idol" auditions. Full Story: A video has been released by TMZ showing Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey having a heated argument on the set of "American Idol." Nicki Minaj can be heard yelling, while using some profane words, which seems directed towards Mariah. At one point, Minaj calls Carey "her... highness." Mariah can be seen and heard responding, but she seems calm, and her words are not very audible. During this, Keith Urban can be seen simply sitting there. According to TMZ, this takes place during the Idol auditions in Charlotte, North Carolina. Nicki Minaj reportedly threatened to "knock out" Mariah later, but that part is not in the video. This supports rumors that had been circulating that the two judges have not gotten along. However, the drama may be what American Idol needs, as its ratings have steadily been declining over the past few years. [Robert Irwin, Eight-Year-Old, Son of Steve Irwin] "Living in a zoo, no, I'm not really scared of anything. But it's pretty fun. Every day I get to wake up to the tigers and elephants and crocs and everything." The Australia Zoo is in Beerwah, Queensland, on Steve Irwin Way. The family is working on its first television show since Steve's death in 2006. Along with Robert's sister, Bindi, and his mother, Terri, the family hopes to continue Steve's legacy of wildlife conversation. Surfers Ride Once-in-a-year Tidal Wave in China River
International surfers ride a once-in-a-year tidal bore on eastern China's Qiantang river. Full story: Surfers from all over the world converged in China (Oct. 1) to ride the signature wave that sweeps down then Qiantang River. Referred to as the "Final Blow" in Chinese and "Silver Dragon" in English, the yearly wave rolls through the city of Hangzhou in Zhejiang province. Monday's ride involved 16 surfers from the USA, Brazil, and Australia. [Mary Osborne, California Surfer]: "The difference between surfing in the ocean and the 'Silver Dragon' is that the ocean has many waves, so you can go out there and you wait and you just keep getting wave after wave, whereas here in China on the 'Silver Dragon', there's one wave and it's once a year. So you really have to be ready and have your team be ready and go with the flow and you just hope you get a little bit of the 'Silver Dragon'." Surfing is unfamiliar to most Chinese mainlanders, but Australian participant Perth Standlick says he is optimistic about its future in China. [Perth Standlick, Australian Surfer]: "I think with this event on every year, it's just going to grow and grow and surfing in China will eventually become a bigger sport and I think it's going to be good, because there are really good waves here. You've got the river, you've got waves on Hainan Island -- and it's awesome waves there. So there's no reason why there shouldn't be any Chinese surfers." Tiananmen Activist Urges US Action on Forced Organ Harvesting in China
One activist from the Tiananmen Square protests of '89 is urging the United States to reveal what it knows about the allegations of forced organ harvesting in China. Wang Dan, who lives in Taiwan, says the political fractures within the Communist Party means it may be easier for the US to press for information. Rights groups have accused the Chinese regime of harvesting organs from prisoners of conscience. Most of the suspected victims are practitioners of the Falun Gong spiritual practice. Disgraced communist official Bo Xilai and his former police chief Wang Lijun are identified as the key people behind forced organ harvesting. During a panel discussion about human rights in China on Tuesday, Wang Dan said the US should take action. [Wang Dan, Chinese Democracy Activist] "We hope that with Bo Xilai's downfall, more information about forced organ harvesting can be exposed. I feel the United States has a responsibility to press the Chinese government for more information. I think it will meet with less resistance now than before." After Chongqing's former police chief Wang Lijun fled to a US Consulate in February, rumors surfaced he had handed information about organ harvesting to US officials. In July, during a press briefing after the US-China human rights dialogue, Assistant Secretary of State Michael Posner did not confirm nor deny a question relating to those claims. Legal researcher Dr. Fort Fu-te Liao says if the US does have information, it should reveal them. [Dr ... From: NTDTV Views: 1 7 ratings Time: 01:59 More in News & Politics

Ancient Graves Opened To Hunt For The Real Mona Lisa
Researchers open ancient graves in their hunt for the real Mona Lisa. Full Story: The hunt continues to find the real Mona Lisa. Researchers are opening ancient graves to search for the body of the woman who modeled for Leonardo Da Vinci. Art historians say she is Lisa Gherardini, the wife of a rich silk merchant in 16th century Florence. But there is no definitive proof. [Silvano Vinceti, Historic and Cultural Heritage, Head]: "If everything goes as planned, we will find Gherardini and with her skull we will be able to reconstruct her face thanks to some sophisticated technology. After that we will be able to compare the face to that of Mona Lisa and maybe for the first time will get an answer which will be based on highly sophisticated technology which does not make errors." The graves are located in an old convent near Florence. Researchers say this is where Gheradini was buried. [Irene Baldi, Anthropologist]: "The first phase of the work consists of opening up the remains as much as possible. Then we need to collect information about the manner of burial. Whether the bodies were moved here from another place or buried in a container, if there was a coffin or not, or a cushion under the head, this is the information that we are searching for." No time scale has been set, and the project is ongoing. Full Story: Magician David Blaine gives a preview of his most shocking stunt yet - using his body to conduct one million volts of electricity. The hair-raising performance will last 3 days and nights, giving fans in New York plenty of time to check out the action. [David Blaine, Magician]: "Being exposed to an electromagnetic field for that length of time for three days and three nights has never been done. So it's obviously going to effect - we're made out of electrons, neurons, so it's going to affect everything that I'm made out of. So we don't know actually what the effect is." Decked out in chain mail and special boots lined with metal, Blaine fires electricity from his fingertips like lightening. 1651 People Break Guinness World Record in Hand Drum Dance
This past weekend Brisbane celebrated its first ever Taiwan Festival. With approximately 40 per cent of the Taiwanese Australian population living in Brisbane, the turnout was huge. And that was just as well, since the biggest event of the weekend was an attempt to break a Guinness World Record for the number of participants in a Bolang drumming class. Official Guinness World Records Adjudicator Chris Sheedy has spent the past 13 years attending record making and record breaking events. [Chris Sheedy, Official Adjudicator, Guinness World Records]: "Look sometimes there's a little bit of magic to a particular type of a record. I would have guessed that maybe 200 people would turn up today, but it's something that's really caught their imagination so it's been an amazing turn out to get this many people together in Brisbane, it's quite incredible for anything I think." Organisers used social media to encourage people to register, with local politicians and business leaders also getting behind the push to break the world record. [David Lin, President, Australian Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce for Queensland]: "So I was really glad that we had more than what we expected to come and participate in the Guinness world record attempt and guess what, we've broken the record! We have set the record; we are now world number one!" In addition to hosting the breaking of a Guinness world record, the festival enabled more people to learn about Taiwan.
