Dentist Creates Singing Dental Drill to Ease Fears
Indonesian dentist creates a musical drill to combat children's fear in the dental chair. In an effort to ease the fears of children during their visits, a dentist in Indonesia has altered his dental drill, changing it to also work as an MP3 player. Dhanni Gustiana is a dental surgeon from Purworejo in Java. He learned that the dental drill was the scariest aspect of visits to the dentist. [Dhanni Gustiana, Dentist]: "The children are not afraid of doctor, many of them are afraid of drill. I modified this by putting a toy on the head of the drill and tell them that the toy will clean their teeth." In 2006, Gustiana created the musical drill after a year of research. It cost about six million rupiah, or $600 USD, to create. [Dhanni Gustiana, Dentist]: "The patient will hear the music louder when they open their mouths compared to when they close their mouths." Patients can even request what songs are played. The dentist also has various figurines that can be loaded onto the drill. While half of his fifteen daily patients are children, adults too ask for the musical drill to be used. Gustiana found that most children patients are not aware of what he was doing. He presented his creation and findings at the International Dental Congress at Greece in March. Perhaps with his work, the common fear of the dentist will become a thing of the past. Guinness World Record For Mass Physical Exercises
About 15 thousand people gathered in Kiev on Sunday (September 30) to establish a new Guinness World Record. The record was set for the largest number of people taking part in morning exercises together. The goal of the event was not just setting a record, but showing people how to overcome their weaknesses and win in everyday life. [Valentin Shcherbachyov, Founder of Ukraine's National Register of Records]: "We see that more than 15 thousand people is a fantastic number. They demonstrate such enthusiasm and such a healthy way of life. So this record will not be beaten for a long time in the future." The event was held on "Champions Day" at the Obolonsky embankment in the Ukrainian capital. According to the National Register, the last record was set in Mexico with about 85 hundred (8500) people. [Valentin Shcherbachyov, Founder of Ukraine's National Register of Records]: "There has never been something like this before. We gathered at least twice as many people as there were in any other previous attempts to do mass morning exercises or to conduct mass events of this kind." The record should be officially registered within the next month and organizers say they plan to send every participant a certificate of participation. Chinese Around the World Stare Up at The Moon
Crowds of locals and tourists gathered in the Chinese beach resort town of Beidaihe, Hebei province, on Saturday, hoping to catch sight of the bright, full moon that marks the Mid-Autumn Festival. [Tourist] "I'm feeling very comfortable at the moment as I immerse myself in such a beautiful sea and night scene. As an ancient Chinese poem says, 'When the bright moon rises from the sea, all the world's people may savor the moment.'" The Mid-Autumn Festival is a traditional Chinese holiday, for which the moon is venerated. It's one of the most important holidays of the year for millions, symbolizing both the hope of good harvests and happiness in the family. The Chinese began celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival in the early Tang Dynasty, a period of material abundance and cultural blossoming, viewed as a high point in China's roughly five-thousand-year history. After 1949, however, the Communist authorities often discouraged celebration of the festival, viewing it as connected with "old" cultural ideas. Reversing the policy, the Chinese government listed the festival as intangible cultural heritage in 2006, and it was made a public holiday in 2008. Cuban Scientists Treat Cancer With Scorpion Venom
Scientists in Cuba find a new way to treat cancer -- using scorpion venom... Full story: Cuban scientists are researching a range of cancer treatments based on scorpion venom. The venom is said to have an anti-inflammatory effect, and may even shrink tumors or inhibit their growth. Last year, the state-run pharmaceutical firm LABIOFAM Business Group launched a homeopathic medicine based on the scorpion venom. [Niudis Cruz, LABIOFAM Business Group, Doctor]: "It improves and alleviates symptoms that come with cancer, such as pain, inflammation and loss of appetite, depending on the general state of their illness." The product is currently licensed for sale in parts of Latin America and China. In Europe it is still awaiting approval, but has already attracted attention. [Antonio Fraga, LABIOFAM Business Group, Director]: "In places where it isn't on sale yet, people are coming here for it -- in significant numbers. So far, about 35000 Italians have flown to Cuba to buy the product." A series of scorpion farms have now opened across Cuba. About one liter of venom can be produced on each farm per month, enough to produce 100000 bottles of medicine. Research projects in the US, Israel, Iran and China are also looking at various applications for scorpion venom, including pesticides, painkillers, and treatments for arthritis and cancer. At a recent symposium in Havana, LABIOFAM presented details of its latest pre-clinical trials on a range of new venom-based medicines ... Cyber Attacks from China on Crucial US Government Network
A cyber attack on a secure US government network has confirmed fears that Chinese hackers are trying to gain access to classified defense information. The attack came in September in the form of what's called spear phishing - an email with an attachment or bad link leading to a malicious website. The attack was linked to computer servers in China. Fox News reported an unnamed source saying it was sent to someone in the White House Communications Agency. The employee opened the email against protocol but reportedly the attack was contained. The Communications Agency is responsible for internal White House communication as well as broader communication controlling nuclear commands. An unnamed White House official told the AP there was no indication that any information was obtained through the attack. During his visit to Beijing this September, US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta raised concerns over the issue of cyber warfare. He called it the "potential battlefield of the future" and cited cyber attacks originating in China. He said he opened the discussion with Chinese leaders on international rules and standards for cyber warfare, but no concrete actions had been taken. The cyber attacks have not been directly linked to the Chinese regime. However, published writings by the People's Liberation Army show that cyber attacks are a part of China's military strategy. Spectacular Sight as Tidal Surge Reunites in China's Qiantang River
Located south of Haining City is the Qiantang River where each September tidal waves from the East China Sea surge dramatically up river. This Sunday saw a rare spectacle when the tide split and then reunited at the Jiaxing-Shaoing bridge. The roaring tide surged in a Y shape and moved across the bridge after the tides merged. A one-line tide also surged against dikes producing "sounds of hoofs of thousands of horses in chorus" and an "unparalleled spectacle" as described by ancient Chinese poets. Each year, thousands of tourists from around the world thrill to the sight, even more so this year with the unusual meeting of the cross tides. China's Manufacturing Contraction Continued in September

China's Manufacturing Contraction Continued in September
A manufacturing slump continues in China, with official data showing a second month of contraction. The Purchasing Managers' Index stood at 49.8 points for September, the National Bureau of Statistics announced on Monday. This is up slightly from 49.2 points in August. Anything below the 50 point mark on the 100 point scale means a contraction. Monday's figure suggests a slight bounce back in manufacturing, but Chinese authorities, including leader Hu Jintao, had earlier warned against further economic deterioration before growth improves. Market watchers are expecting Chinese regulators to introduce further measures to boost the economy. Although so far, this year's new measures, including a double interest rate cut, have had little result. China's economic growth hit a three year low during the second quarter, hitting 7.6%. But analysts have cautioned against relying on official data as it can be prone to manipulation and may not reflect the true state of the Chinese economy. The official GDP figures for the quarter ending in September are expected on October 18th. Taboo Topic Uncensored After Bo Xilai's Purge
Disgraced politician Bo Xilai and his former police chief Wang Lijun have both been internationally accused of harvesting organs from living political prisoners, in particular jailed adherents of the Falun Gong spiritual practice. Up until now, Chinese censors have made the topic a taboo, and netizens have had little chance to find out about it, let alone discuss it. That seems to be changing now. Shortly after Bo Xilai was purged from the Communist Party last week, the term "live harvest", or "Huo Zhai" in Chinese, became unblocked on Sina Weibo, China's largest microblog service. The term is used to describe the crimes of forced organ harvesting, and now a search of "live harvest", turns up more than 40000 results. That's not all. Back in March, after Wang Lijun fled to a US Consulate, rumors surfaced he had handed information regarding organ harvesting to US officials. Today, posts appeared in Sina Weibo listing the six pieces of evidence Wang allegedly handed over. These include evidence of forced organ harvesting and a plot between Bo and his political patron, Chinese security chief Zhou Yongkang, to overthrow incoming leader Xi Jinping. With the Chinese regime's rigorous internet control these kinds of reverse in censorship are not accidental. Analyst Hong Wei for US-based Sound of Hope Radio says it's a hint of things to come. [Hong Wei, China Analyst] "After Bo Xilai was sacked from Communist Party and his positions, these kinds of detailed leak of what Wang Lijun ... Five Tourists Die in Fiery Beijing Crash
China's eight-day long national holiday turned deadly on the roads today, when a tourist bus crashed on a highway outside of Beijing. Five German tourists and their driver died in the crash, after their bus hit the back of a truck and burst into flames, according to state-run media. Witnesses posted pictures of the accident online, showing flames and smoke engulfing the bus. State-run Xinhua News Agency reports the bus was traveling to Tianjin with a group of German tourists. It was unclear how many people were on board. Two Chinese passengers and another 12 German tourists were injured in the crash, and have been taken to nearby hospitals. The cause of the crash is under investigation. Road safety is a big problem in China, especially during the busy holiday seasons. Chinese Firm to Challenge Obama's Wind Farm Ban
A Chinese-owned company says it will go to court over its rights to own wind farms in Oregon. That comes after US President Barack Obama blocked the company's wind farm project last Friday. President Obama cited national security concerns when he issued an executive order to stop Delaware-based Ralls Corp from owning four wind-farm projects. The wind farms are either in or near the restricted air space of a naval weapons training facility. The case follows rising concerns over Chinese investment in the US. But it's the first time in more than two decades that a US President has stopped a foreign-owned project in this way. Ralls is backed by Sany Group, a Chinese construction machinery conglomerate. According to CNN, the company said Obama's decision was unconstitutional, saying it violates the protection of property ownership and legal process. The US Treasury Department said today that the President's decision, made under the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, cannot be reviewed by the court system%mdasheffectively making any Ralls lawsuit a moot point. Sony becoming Olympus' top shareholder
Sony is becoming Olympus' top shareholder, as the two form an alliance to produce medical equipment. Full Story: Sony is becoming the biggest shareholder of Olympus, forming a partnership in medical equipment development after buying the stake for 50 billion yen, or $643.5 million USD. Olympus, a Japanese camera and endoscope maker, has been strapped for cash after having to cover for losses due to a scandal that dates back to the 1990s. The new deal will have Sony holding an 11.46 percent stake through newly issued shares of Olympus, with that likely increasing over the years. Explaining their decision on monday, Sony Corp. Chief Executive Kazuo Hirai said the risks of entering into a new market will be mitigated in the venture. [Kazuo Hirai, Sony President]: "With the Sony and Olympus partnership, it is our hope that together we can make a comeback through innovation, and provide high quality medical equipment for people around the world." While Sony's television production has not been making money, they hope to incorporate impressive technologies such as 3D and 4K into endoscopes. The two companies are also planning to co-operate in producing digital cameras. Olympus Corp shares moved up 1 percent and Sony also went up 5 percent with the news. Activists in Hong Kong Demonstrate on China's National Day
Protesters gathered outside Golden Bauhinia Square in Hong Kong today (October 1), the site of a flag raising celebration for Chinese National Day. The 50-some protesters are continuing to show discontent at a proposed national education course. Demonstrators say it glorifies the violent and often bloody history of the Chinese regime and promotes communist ideas. Hong Kong officials say they will no longer make the course mandatory, but have refused to withdraw it completely from the education system. Head of student group Scholarism, Joshua Wong says making the course optional is still not good enough. He sees it as an issue of patriotism and sovereignty to keep the course from being taught in Hong Kong. [Joshua Wong, Co-Founder of Student Group Scholarism]: "We, Scholarism and a group of Hong Kong citizens, are very patriotic. Because we are patriotic, this is why we don't want the next generation in Hong Kong and China to lose their ability to think independently and to lose their freedom to think. So we choose this patriotic day, because we love our country, to protest during the flag-raising ceremony and to look for Leung Chun-ying, our chief executive, because Leung Chun-ying still has not responded to the citizens' demand to withdraw the national education curriculum." The League of Social Democrats joined the student group. They're a part of a pro-democracy political party. Their grievances are different but their message is the same: keep Hong Kong free from ...
