Female Rappers Take Centre Stage At Afghanistan Music Festival
Afghan female rappers perform at a music festival in Kabul, Afghanistan. Full story: In a country where public performing is typically considered shameful and un-Islamic, two Afghan female rappers took centre stage on Wednesday. The young hip hop artists were performing at the second annual Sound Central Festival in Kabul, Afghanistan. A crowd of nearly 300 young Afghans danced, cheered and jumped to the music. This three-day "alternative music festival" was the idea of Travis Beard, an Australian photojournalist who joined a band when he moved to Kabul. He was inspired by the talent and dedication of local musicians. Moshtari is a 19-year-old Afghan performer who flew in from Germany. [Moshtari, Female Afghan Performer]: "There are all kinds of artists here, local Afghans, Afghans from the West. I think this festival is the start of a new Kabul and new Afghanistan, and it's important to help build that." Rapper Susan Feroz says she gained inspiration from her country as well as the people of Afghanistan. [Susan Feroz, Afghan Rapper]: "By rapping I want to express the pain of my family and the people who have migrated to other countries." Ruth Owen, vocalist and bassist of a punk band, said she was surprised at the turnout of female Afghan performers. [Ruth Owen, Vocalist & Bassist, White City punk band]: "I'd never thought there would come a day where 'd see female rapers on stage, that I'd see fame graffiti artists on TV and paintings on the walls of Kabul and I would ... High-tech Gravestones Scannable with Smartphones
Your loved ones may be buried, but a new technology is ensuring they won't be forgotten. Austrian-based company Aspetos is using scannable gravestone codes, so anyone with a Smartphone and proper authorization - can unlock the memories of a person's past. Aspeto's Joerg Bauer says these codes can display everything from anecdotes to eulogies. [Joerg Bauer, Spokesman for Aspetos]: "It was developed to help people in grief. From a psychological standpoint, at the same time we know that memory - not departure - is the most important thing in that respect." QR or Quick Response codes are mostly used in marketing and advertising, but special etching technology called grit blasting, is ensuring the codes and the memories last more than a lifetime. Death Toll Rises to 19 in Yunnan Landslide
All 19 people buried in a landslide in Yunnan province yesterday have died. A mudslide buried a school and three houses on Thursday after days of heavy rains. Rescuers have recovered the bodies of 18 primary school kids and one villager. State-run media says the children were supposed to be on holiday when the landslide struck. Due to earthquakes that happened in the region in early September, the children were in school to make up days missed. World's Tallest Skyscraper Being Built With Toy Blocks
This is the concept art for what could become the world's tallest building. And it's being made the same way your old Meccano or Lego toys were. The Chinese construction firm Broad Sustainable Building is using pre-fabricated components that are slotted to fit together. UK media The Telegraph reports that the company has set an unbelievable construction schedule of only 7 months. To put that into context, Dubai's Burj Khalifa, currently the tallest building in the world at over 1 mile high, took 6 years to build. When completed, the 220-story building will have schools, a hospital, 17 helipads and apartments for over 30000 people. CEO Zhang Yue, an ardent environmentalist who made his estimated $1.2 billion fortune in air conditioning, says his construction methods save time, uses less steel and concrete, and is the next step in his goal to make China greener. But he isn't stopping there. Once this building is done, he plans to top it with an even taller one, a one-and-a-quarter-mile high 636-floor skyscraper. Four Tibetans Jailed for Self-Immolation Reporting
You would think that a Chinese citizen burning himself alive in public would be newsworthy%mdashor at least, that it would not be considered a "state secret." Yet that's exactly what the authorities are calling it. According to Radio Free Asia, Four Tibetans have been imprisoned in China for their attempts to spread word of self-immolation protests. The burnings are in protest against perceived Chinese abuses in Tibet. Now it seems authorities are seeking to censor the trend, by any means necessary. Courts in Sichuan Province sentenced 19-year-old Lobsang Tsultrim and 17-year-old Lobsang Jangchub, to 11 and eight years in prison respectively associating with a self-immolating monk. Another court in Sichuan, meanwhile, sentenced two Tibetans in their twenties, Lobsang Tashi and Bu Thupdor, to over seven years in prison just for sending information about the burning protests to foreign contacts. The two men were convicted of "revealing state secrets." Hong Kong Golden Week Purchases Down
It's Golden Week in China now, a time when many mainland tourists venture to Hong Kong to buy luxury goods for less. Chinese purchase everything from luxury clothing and watches to other tech purchases. But according to Joseph Tung of the Travel Industry Council, spending is down ten percent from last year, although the number of tourists arriving in Hong Kong is increasing. Tung estimates that tourists will spend about five to six thousand Hong Kong dollars this year, or about 650 to 750 US dollars. It's down from seven to eight thousand Hong Kong dollars last year. Bloomberg News reports that retail sales on the island are at their slowest pace since the onset of the global financial crisis. Sales were up about 4.5 percent in value for August, but economists expected it to increase by 5.8 percent. Golden Week ends on Sunday. Psy Surprised at "Gangnam Style" Success at Seoul Press Conference
Psy expresses surprise at the success of "Gangnam Style" and says his song "doesn't have much meaning", referring to the abundant media analysis of the video clip. Full script: The kpop song "Gangnam Style" is making world records as the first Korean pop song to make it big worldwide. It's left many, including the artist himself, more than a little surprised. Psy spoke at a press conference in Seoul about the first moment he realized how huge it was becoming. [Psy, Kpop Rapper]: "At that point I was wow what's happening right now?" At the same time, he thinks the song has been overanalyzed - seen as a parody of wealthy Korean's lifestyle. [Psy, Kpop Rapper]: "You know suddenly this song became this big and I got a lot of questions about what this song is about but it's kind of embarrassing but let me say, it doesn't have any meaning actually. I'm just staying Gangnam Style, Gangnam Style, Gangnam Style, which doesn't have that much meaning. It's about some lady and some guys; "dress classy, dance cheesy" or whatever." Psy will be busy in South Korea with work lined up on commercials, a TV program and the F1 Grand Prix. He says he's working with his manager Scooter Braun to focus on publicity in the US and plans to visit US fans there in mid-November. Work Permits for Trash Collectors Criticized as Money Grab
Trash collectors in a region in northwest China will now need to apply for permits for what they do. The Heyang County government in Shaanxi province introduced new regulations for trash recycling this month. Some have criticized the move as an attempt to squeeze those in the bottom rung of society. The new regulation came into effect on October 1st. It requires trash or recyclable waste collectors to display government issued permits both on their bodies and vehicles. Authorities say the move will help them to manage the trash collectors, but some think it's just to make money. In order to get a permit to operate, collectors have to first pay a fee. Heyang County is not the first to introduce the operational permits for trash collectors. Similar requirements have been introduced or are being considered in other parts of China. [Mr Chen, Guangdong Resident] "Those people who collect trash on the streets are already in extreme poverty. They just want to survive. Now you want them to pay for these permits. It means, before they can make money, they're already being short changed by the government. This is really shameful." Others turned their criticisms to officials, questioning whether they receive "permits" to work in office. [Mr Guo, Shenzhen Resident] "This so called work permit, well, do the government officials have work permits? Who issued them? The public? Did we vote for you? Officials get their positions through backdoor methods, but the public needs a permit do ... From: NTDTV Views: 355 4 ratings Time: 02:02 More in News & Politics

China's Services Sector PMI Lowest in Two Years
China's service sector has slowed to its lowest point since November 2010. The purchasing manager's index has fallen to 53.7 points in September, down from 56.3 in August, that's according to figures released Wednesday by the country's National Bureau of Statistics. While a figure above the 50-point mark indicates growth, rather than contraction, the latest data shows that China's service sector is starting to feel the effects of the slowing manufacturing sector. The manufacturing sector contracted for the second month in September, with the PMI at 49.8 points. Now the ripple effect is reaching related services. Construction and transport services have weakened. There is also a drop in new orders. China's export dependent economy has been suffering under the global slowdown. The country's regulators have tried to spur domestic demand by easing monetary policies, including introducing two interest rate cuts in June and July. Rocket for 1000 MPH Supersonic Car Passes First Test
A British team behind a project to build a 1000 mph car clear a key hurdle with a successful test of the rocket they hope will push the vehicle well beyond the sound barrier. Full script: [Andy Green, Royal Air Force Pilot]: "Ladies and gentlemen, that is what a 1000-miles-an-hour engineering invention is meant to look like." That's the rocket that's aiming to break the land speed record and the man who aims to drive the car. On Wednesday, the Bloodhound team successfully tested the rocket in the English town of Newquay, clearing another hurdle in their attempt to build a car that can top one thousand miles per hour. The British team has been working on the car for four years. With the Bloodhound Supersonic Car, they aim to break the current land speed record of 763 miles per hour, set by the Thrust SSC. That car was also built by the same team 15 years ago. The test lasted a few seconds, but everything seemed to go perfectly. The thirty thousand horsepower hybrid rocket engine uses an F1 engine just to pump in the peroxide-based fuel. Data from the test shows it produced 14200 pounds of thrust. Later tests in the year will push the engine harder; the engine is designed to generate 27500 pounds of thrust, the equivalent of 80 thousand horsepower. [Richard Noble, Project Director]: "The overall objective is to create a 1000-miles-an-hour world land speed record, which means to pass it over the measured mile. We are going through the measured mile at about 3.6 seconds." The ... From: NTDTV Views: 499 12 ratings Time: 01:36 More in Autos & Vehicles

Tomb Of Ancient Mayan Queen Uncovered in Guatemala
Remains of an ancient Maya queen are discovered in a rare tomb in Guatemala. Full Script: Archaeologists in Guatemala have discovered a rare tomb with the remains of an ancient Maya warrior queen. The tomb was packed with treasures - glistening jade jewels and finely crafted ceramic vases. A small alabaster vase reveals the identity of the Queen. [David Freidel, Lead Archaeologist]: "We know it is a queen because she is buried with special carved stone object, it's very small but it has a portrait of her in white alabaster. And on the other side of the same small stone jar is her name and it says that she is a queen and that she is a woman of the royal house of the snake dynasty. And in this period of time in Peten the snake dynasty ruled the Maya world." The tomb was discovered at the Peru-Waka archaeology site in Guatemala's northern Peten region. Researches are especially pleased to learn the identity of the queen. [Griselda Perez, Archaeologist]: "It's very important for us to know the name of the person that is in this tomb because in the Maya area it is very difficult. At the same site of Peru (Waka) there have been discoveries of other tombs with many hieroglyphic inscriptions or with none but if there are many inscriptions we don't know if they're referring to the person (in the tomb).
