Next 36-48 Hours Critical for Girl Shot by Taliban
Doctors are satisfied with the condition of the 14-year-old girl who was shot by the Taliban but the next 36 to 48 hours are critical. Full script: Doctors treating a 14-year-old Pakistani girl who was shot by the Taliban are now satisfied with her condition, according to Pakistan's military. However, the next 36 to 48 hours remain critical. [Asim Saleem Bajwa, Military Spokesman Major-General]: "There's a panel of doctors which was formed to review her condition, and oversee the treatment. That panel of doctors travelled with her in a special military helicopter which shifted her here last night. The shifting, which by itself is a very arduous task, was completed successfully and the fresh investigation was done on her." Malala Yousufzai was transferred on Thursday to a hospital in the army garrison town of Rawalpindi. She is unconscious and in a critical condition after gunmen shot her in the head and neck as she left school on Tuesday. Doctors say she has moved her arms and legs slightly since the incident. A Taliban spokesman said that the girl was targeted for trying to spread Western culture and that they would try to kill her again if she survived. Staff at Ganga Ram Hospital, one of the oldest hospitals in Lahore, gathered to pray for Malala. [Sheikh Ejaz, Medical Superintendent, Ganga Ram Hospital]: "All of us strongly condemn this (attack on Malala), and we express our whole-hearted loathing for the act. Syrian Refugees Unable To Call Home
Syrian refugees in Jordan are unable to call their families because of power shortages. Full Story: Syrian refugees in Jordan's Zaatari refugee camp are facing a severe shortage of power supply for their mobile phones. Zaatari refugee camp was opened this July in Jordan to host the Syrians fleeing the violence that erupted in the country from 2011. So far, the camp has housed 35000 refugees. The refugees are not allowed to leave the camp unless given special permissions. Cellphone calls are their only way to get in touch with their families back in Syria. But there is only one place in the camp to recharge cellphone batteries. The recharging spot is located in the office of a charity organization. Several power strips are laid out - but these sockets are far from enough for over 30000 refugees. [Kamal, Refugee Waiting in Queue]: "There are about 10000 cellphones in this camp, with only five power sockets available. How can that be enough? We probably won't get our turns even after a whole day of waiting." Those who are lucky enough to recharge their phones may still be unable to speak to their families, due to damaged communication facilities in Syria. Miami Heat Beats Clippers in Beijing
The sixth National Basketball Association (NBA) China Games lit up the MasterCard Center in Beijing as the resurgent Los Angeles Clippers took on the reigning champions Miami Heat on Thursday night. At the end of a pulsating game, Heat trumped the Los Angeles Clippers 94-80 thanks to superstar LeBron James, who scored 20 points, five rebounds, five assists and one steal. The sell-out crowd of 18000 was on its feet as soon as the Heat pre-game took to the court with James and All-Star Dwyane Wade waving to fans. The pair was in the same arena where they won the 2008 Olympic gold medal for Team USA. [Spectator]: "It's exciting when watching the (NBA) games on television usually, but it is more thrilling when watching it live. I do not watch basketball very often, but I'm really excited after watching it today." [Spectator]: "There should be more seats available to make more people have the chance to share the game with us," said a fan at the center. The Heat went to work from the start, with the first three-point shot coming from Shane Battier, a former teammate of Chinese superstar Yao Ming. And James delighted the crowd with a spectacle of dunks and jumps to put Heat in the lead with 29-18 at the end of the first quarter. The Clippers closed the gap to 60-47 by the third quarter following six straight points scored by explosive power forward Blake Griffin midway through the quarter. However, a swift answer of two three-pointers by Miami's newly acquired Ray Allen doused ... From: NTDTV Views: 122 7 ratings Time: 00:51 More in News & Politics

China and Japan Ready to Talk over Islands Dispute
A senior Chinese official met with his Japanese counterpart on Thursday (Oct. 11) to discuss the rising tensions between their countries over the East China Sea. The head of the Chinese Foreign Ministry's Asian Affairs Department, Luo Zhaohui flew to Japan for a secret meeting with the director general of the Asian and Oceanic Affairs Bureau at the Japanese Foreign Ministry. The two were laying a foundation for future talks at the higher levels of government. China and Japan have agreed to sit down and discuss their territorial dispute over the Diaoyu Islands, or Senkaku Islands as they're known in Japan. It comes a day after Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda said both countries would suffer if they didn't meet at the bargaining table. Japan's Foreign Ministry says discussions will be held at the vice-ministerial level, but no date has been set. Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Osamu Fujimura elaborated on the situation to reporters, saying (quote), "It is important for Japan and China to take a broad view and start by communicating with the aim of improving relations, including at the planned vice-ministerial meeting, where I expect a frank exchange of views." The islands, situated in waters rich in natural gas deposits, and a haven for fishing, have been administered by Japan since 1895, but China has declared them "sacred territory," and Taiwan also claims sovereignty over them. Both China and Japan have patrol boats in the area, and there are concerns that an ... From: NTDTV Views: 98 2 ratings Time: 01:32 More in News & Politics

Nobel Peace Prize Awarded To The European Union
The European Union is awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for six decades of work in advancing peace in Europe. Full script: The European Union has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for its long-term role in uniting the continent. The Norwegian Nobel Committee made the announcement on Friday. [Thorbjoern Jagland, Nobel Peace Prize Committee Chairman]: "Ladies and gentlemen, good morning. The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2012 is to be awarded to the European Union. The Union and its forerunners have for over six decades contributed to the advancement of peace and reconciliation, democracy and human rights in Europe." European Council President Herman Van Rompuy is proud of the European Union's peacekeeping efforts. And German Chancellor Angela Merkel has called it "a wonderful decision", both an inspiration and a duty. Reconciliation between Germany and France was a major part of the announcement. [Thorbjoern Jagland, Nobel Peace Prize Committee Chairman]: "The dreadful suffering in World War Two demonstrated the need for a new Europe. Over a seventy-year period, Germany and France had fought three wars. Today war between Germany and France is unthinkable." But reactions were mixed elsewhere in Europe. Eurosceptics in Britain have heaped scorn on the decision, arguing that the drive for further European integration is actually causing people greater poverty and hardship. Farmers Sue Shell for Environmental Damage
Royal Dutch Shell faces a lawsuit from four Nigerian villagers in a case that could set a precedent for damage claims against international companies. Full story: Shell will have to defend its practices in Nigeria after farmers and an environmental group sued the oil giant in the Netherlands for damages on Thursday. The lawsuit was filed in The Hague by the organization Friends of the Earth along with four Nigerian farmers. It is against the global headquarters of Royal Dutch Shell, based in the Netherlands, along with other companies. The four seek compensation, arguing that they can no longer feed their families due to pollution from the company's facilities. Plantiff Eric Dooh told of his situation. [Eric Dooh, Plaintiff]: "Communities in Oguniland had been badly contaminated. Some communities are deserted, like my community, Goi in Oguniland has been deserted as a result of devastation of the ecosystem and our environment. My father had four big fish farms." Now he says "nothing lives in the water." There were oil spills between 2004 and 2007 around the Niger Delta, including Ogoniland. However, Shell says that it did its part, cleaning the spills, and satisfying Nigerian authorities. Chinese Residents React To Toyota Recall
Japan's Toyota Motor Corp announced on Wednesday its decision to recall 7.43 million vehicles world-wide. The recalled vehicles will undergo a short repair, to address a malfunctioning power window switch that could become a potential fire hazard. This is the largest voluntary recall for Toyota since a total of 8 million cars were recalled in 1998.Between 2009 and 2011, a further 10 million vehicles were recalled to address other post-manufacturing malfunctions. In the first half of 2012 Toyota regained its position as the best-selling automaker in the world. But sales in China have recently plummeted due to the territorial dispute between China and Japan. China is the world's largest car market, and accounts for about 12 percent of Toyota's total yearly sales. On Tuesday Toyota announced that its China sales for September had fallen a staggering 48.9 percent. But despite the recent political backdrop, these Beijing residents believe that the Toyota recall will not harm its reputation. [Ms Liu, Beijing Resident]: "I think I'm a little worried, but if they adopt this kind of attitude in taking responsibility for vast numbers of cars, then I'm quite satisfied. If this attracts customers, then I'd consider it." [Mr Liu, Beijing Resident]: "I'm not too worried about this. For sales this will probably have a good effect." No accidents, injuries or deaths have been reported as a result of the problem, but Toyota say there is a possibility the malfunctioning switches could emit ... "Innocence of Muslims" Man Denies Charges
The man linked to anti-islamist film "Innocence of Muslims" denied that he violated probation charges. Full story: A California man linked to an anti-Islam film denies he had violated his probation. He had been convicted of bank fraud and was on probation when he was accused of making a defamatory video of the Prophet Mohamed. The man is publicly known as Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, but appeared in court under the name Mark Basseley Youssef. He was born in Egypt but now lives in California. He denied in court he was guilty of the charges, which included lying to officials and using aliases. Youssef was barred from using aliases while on probaiton, as well as accessing the Internet. The man was attributed to a crudely made 13-minute video that circulated online under several titles, including "Innocence of Muslims." The film sparked a torrent of anti-American unrest in Arab and Muslim countries for portraying the Prophet Mohammad as a fool and sexual deviant. US authorities said they were not investigating the film itself, but prosecutors said the man could be sent back to prison if he did violate probation rules. His lawyer said at a press interview that his client is not responsible for the violence the video caused. [Steven Seiden, Lawyer of Mark B. CCP Missed Chances to Settle Diaoyu Islands Dispute: HK Journalist
The territorial dispute between China and Japan over the Diaoyu Islands shows no sign of cooling. After weeks of strong rhetoric and sometimes violent rioting, some observers have wondered why the Chinese regime has suddenly turned up the dial on the subject %mdashespecially when it had opportunities to resolve the dispute before. Veteran Hong Kong journalist Ching Cheong was amongst the first to advocate Chinese ownership of the Diaoyu Islands. He recently published an article criticizing the Communist regime for passing up four chances to settle the ownership dispute with Japan. In 1971, when the United States handed over authority over the Ryuku Islands back to Japan, it included the Diaoyu Islands as well. Ching wrote that while the Chinese regime disputed that handover, it stopped short of engaging diplomatic channels to challenge it. A year later, the Chinese regime resumed diplomatic ties with Japan. It declined Japan's offer to pay war crimes compensation, and left the ownership issue of Diaoyu Islands aside. In 1978, as the two sides concluded a peace treaty, the then Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping told visiting Japanese Foreign Minister Sunao Sonada that the Diaoyu Islands issue can be left for the next generation. Then, in 1996, after a Hong Kong activist drowned in the waters of the Islands, Ching claimed Japanese authorities indicated they were open to discussing the ownership issues with the Chinese regime. Again, Ching said, Beijing passed up the opportunity ... From: NTDTV Views: 37 5 ratings Time: 02:23 More in News & Politics

China Announces Organ Donation System Amid Forced Harvesting Allegations
China's Ministry of Health announced on Wednesday plans to set up a national organ donation system. The proposal comes amid increasing international attention on illegal organ harvesting under the communist regime. State-run media reports the system will include a database of waiting lists and organs available from a network of a 164 qualified hospitals. A kidney specialist and assistant professor at Yale University School of Medicine, Dr. Jianchao Xu says the new proposal looks good on paper, but he doubts it will work. [Dr. Xu Jianchao, Renal Doctor, Yale University] "There have been a lot of international discussions about China's inadequate organ transplant system. So it's attempting to improve. But as to whether this can be carried out, it's hard to say. Because nothing is transparent inside China, these transplant centers are very self-focused, and often do not like to share organs with others, so they may not follow the rules." Culturally Chinese people have an aversion to organ donation, and the number of voluntary donors has been historically very low. Chinese authorities have long admitted to using executed prisoners as a source of organs. Rights groups say this practice extends beyond executed prisoners, and that prisoners of conscience are being killed for their organs. Last week, 106 US Congress members urged the State Department to reveal any information it may have on these allegations, particularly whether practitioners of the persecuted Falun Gong ... Mo Yan's Nobel Prize Receives Mixed Reactions
[Peter Englund, Permanent Secretary of Swedish Academy]: (English, male) "The Nobel Prize in literature for 2012 is awarded to the Chinese writer Mo Yan who with hallucinatory realism merges folk tales, history and the contemporary. Thank you." Guan Moye, who goes by the pen name Mo Yan, is the first Chinese citizen to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature since 1901. The work that won him the award is titled "Frog". It deals with the controversy over China's one child policy and the Chinese cultural preference for boys. There have been mixed reactions to Mo's award, who's pen name literally translates to "Don't Speak." China's state-run media has wildly welcomed the prize. Mo is a Communist Party member, and was once in the People's Liberation Army. This official reaction is drastically different to the last time a Chinese native won the Nobel Literature prize back in 2000. was living in France at the time, and his work was critical of the Communist Party. Fellow Chinese writers have been less enthusiastic about the award. Some are unhappy his success is a result of withholding criticism of the Communist Party. [Wen Yunchao, Blogger and Journalist]: "The two words 'Mo Yan' mean 'do not speak,' and they are a very real portrayal of the current political situation in China. Lance Armstrong Doping Accusations -- French Public Unsurprised
Fresh accusations that seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong was a doping ringleader come as no surprise on the streets of Paris. If the United States Anti-Doping Agency is right, then Armstrong cheated his way to the top of the cycling world through the most elaborate doping scheme ever seen in the sport. People on the streets of the French capital offer their opinion. [Laurent Bodin, Parisian] "German television is no longer showing the Tour de France today and that's because they had had enough, having to spend more time reporting each year about doping than about victories so I think that the Tour de France's image has been damaged for the past 15 or 20 years." [Atle Kold-Hansen, Norwegian Tourist] "I think it is a pity because it is a nice sport, I've been following it every summer more or less, but it's a shame, it's a pity." [Felix, Parisian] "I think that cycling is very very difficult and I think that without doping they (the cyclists) wouldn't achieve anything." The information released by the United States Anti-Doping Agency on Wednesday is the most comprehensive yet. It includes the sworn testimony of 11 former teammates of Armstrong, as well as financial payments, emails and laboratory tests. Armstrong is accused not only of doping, but also of being the ringleader who ordered his teammates to cheat.
