E-Cards Provide Food For Syrian Refugees
Syrian refugees in Turkey can now use e-cards to purchase food. Full Story: The United Nations World Food Program, or WFP, is working in partnership with the Turkish Red Crescent to provide food for Syrian refugees in Turkey. Electronic cards, or e-cards, are being distributed to some 25000 Syrians in the Kilis and Hatay refugee camps. The e-cards can be used at supermarkets, and are loaded with 45 US dollars. This is considered adequate to provide basic food needs for the card holder for one month. The scheme also benefits the local economy, and will be expanded to help more refugees. One recipient is Abu Naif, a 41-year-old construction worker who fled Syria with eleven family members, including his two-day-old son. Naif and his family now live in a pre-fabricated structure in Kilis camp. [Abu Naif, Syrian Refugee]: "There was nowhere to go because of the air strikes. The only escape was to go to Turkey. So, I took the kids and came to Turkey." The WFP regional director says the e-cards enable refugees to buy food without having to pay. [Daly Belgasmi, Regional Director for the WFP]: "WFP and the Turkish Red Crescent have developed this card, which is a kind of credit card where the refugees will go to a great supermarket, that we just visited, full of great fresh food." The Turkish government estimates some 100000 Syrians have fled to Turkey to avoid the violence, with the number growing daily. Syrian refugees in Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq are also increasing. Luxury Industry Slows as Chinese Cut Back
Sales of luxury goods are expected to tumble this year, as China's big spenders are cutting back. According to business consulting firm Bain & Company's annual "Luxury Goods Worldwide Market Study", luxury goods sales are set to rise by 5% globally this year to $275 billion at constant exchange rates, compared to 13% last year. Luxury goods sales in China are projected to grow by 8% at constant currencies, down from 30% last year. The report cites recent changes in China as affecting China's shoppers, who make up a huge portion of the luxury industry's growth. China's leadership transition and crackdowns on corruption are mentioned as two factors. Yet Chinese consumers still make one in four purchases of personal luxury items in the world. China has surpassed Japan as the second largest luxury goods market, behind the United States. Chinese shoppers now make half of all luxury purchases in Asia and almost one third of those in Europe. The report estimates that the luxury goods market will grow by four to six percent per year between 2013 and 2015, reaching $311 to $324 billion by the middle of the decade. Radovan Karadzic On Trial For Genocide
Former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic on trial for genocide, says he should be rewarded not punished. Full Story: Former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic is on trial over his role in some of the worst atrocities in Europe since World War Two. Yet he began his defense on Tuesday by saying that far from being accused, he should be praised for his efforts to promote peace. Karadzic is one of three Serb leaders brought to trial in The Hague for war crimes during the violent break up of multi-ethnic Yugoslavia. In the conflict between 1991 and 1999, well over 100000 people were killed and millions were displaced. Prosecutors at the International Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, have accused Karadzic of being behind the massacre of 8000 Bosnian Muslims in 1995. He is also charged with being responsible for shelling the Bosnian capital during a 4 year long siege. [Radovan Karadzic, Accused]: "Instead of being accused for happenings in our civil war, I should have been rewarded, and here is why: because I did everything in human power to avoid the war." Karadzic is defending himself against charges of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity, and will cross-examine witnesses himself. Bosnian Serb military leader Ratko Mladic went on trial this year, and former Yugoslav and Serbian president Slobodan Milosevic died in 2006 before the end of his trial. Malala Yousafzai was flown from pakistan to the UK this week for treatment at a hospital in Birmingham. Medical Director at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Dr. Dave Rosser. [Dr. Dave Rosser, Medical Director at Queen Elizabeth Hospital] "Well it very clearly says that the doctors, some of whom were people from here in the children's hospital believed that she has a chance of making a good recovery, as it clearly would have been inappropriate on every level, not least for her, to put her through all this, if there was no hope of a decent recovery." Malala was shot last week by members of the Taliban as she rode the bus home from school. She had become famous for speaking out against the Taliban and for campaigning for equal rights for girls. Rescued Sea Lions Return to the Wild in Peru
Peruvian environmentalists released three rescued sea lions back into the wild on Saturday. The release was part of a project to reintegrate the endangered species back into their natural habitat. The three sea lions, named Fiona, Felix and Flynn, were rescued three months ago from beaches around Lima. They suffered from a number of injuries believed to be caused by fishermen who attacked them. [Carlos Yaipen, ORCA Director]: "These sea lions suffered from kidney failure and were malnourished and dehydrated. We have followed protocols in order to return them back to the wild." Peru's Organization for Research and Conservation of Aquatic Animals, aka ORCA, has been working on the sea lion's rehabilitation. [Carlos Yaipen, ORCA Director]: "These sea lions were rescued three months ago. We have been putting them through the rehabilitation program at ORCA to work on their physical, psychological and emotional recovery." The most dramatic case was that of nine-month-old Flynn, who was found badly injured and in a coma after his mother was killed. It is suspected that fishermen were responsible for his mother's death although it is impossible to know. Ten month-old Felix and 22-month-old Fiona were also found covered in bloody wounds and malnourished. After living in captivity for the past three months these sea creatures are happy to see the ocean again. Thousands in Pakistan at Rally to Support Girl Shot by Taliban
Thousands of people threw a rally in Karachi on Sunday in support of Malala Yousufzai, the fourteen-year-old girl who is hospitalized after being shot by Taliban gunmen. The attack has sparked outrage across Pakistan, with many showing their support. Sunday's event was by far the largest yet, organized by the Muttahida Quami Movement, the city's most powerful political party. [Farooq Sattar, MQM Party Leader]: "Malala is the bright face of Pakistan. A conspiracy has been done to ditch the country in the darkness of ignorance by putting out this light." The evening before, hundreds held a candlelight vigil for Malala in Karachi. That event was also organized by the MQM. Malala is being flown to the UK for medical treatment. She remains in critical condition after being shot in the head on October 9th, after years of campaigning against a Taliban commander for ordering the closure of girls' schools. 9/11 Attack Suspects Start Pretrial Hearings
Pretrial hearings begin at Guantanamo base for the alleged mastermind of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center and four other conspirators. A week of pre-trial hearings begins at Guantanamo base on Monday for Khalid Sheikh Mohammed. He is the alleged mastermind of the 911 plane attacks that killed nearly three thousand people in 2001. Also at the hearing are four alleged al Qaeda conspirators accused of providing money and other support for the hijackers. After a failed attempt to try them at Guantanamo in 2008, the five were brought in again on revised charges during hearing in May. There have been no hearings in the case since then. Many of the issues the court will address during this week's hearing pertain to secrecy issues. Defense lawyers want the judge to get rid of the the quote "presumptive classification" process that treats CIA interrogations of the men as state secrets. The judge will also hear media requests to keep access to the courtroom during the trial. During the hearing, the issue of whether the US Constitution governs the tribunals at Guantanamo Bay will also be discussed. The defendants are charged with conspiring with al Qaeda, attacking civilians, and civilian targets, murder in violation of the laws of war, destruction of property, hijacking and terrorism. All five could face the death penalty if convicted. Out of Control Soapbox Racing in Hong Kong
It's soapbox racing like you've never seen it before. 35000 spectators packed the streets for Red Bull's first soapbox race in Hong Kong. 42 contestants designed and built their own speed machines and sent them flying down the over 1200-foot course. Many crashed. It seems there's a reason why cars aren't usually designed to look like hot pots. Some spent about as much time on their costumes as the soapbox racers. And so they crashed. For others, a lot was on the line, besides dangling raw meat that is. [Terry Tang, Racing Butcher]: "It's a local butcher, and I'm actually a butcher. So my company sponsors me. So we got to win this race. If I win this race today, I will get a promotion. I will be the head butcher today." He did not win. The course was littered with obstacles. And many crashed. Of course it's nothing to lose your top over. Well, these guys did. And then they crashed. This unicorn was flying! And then it crashed. Crashed. Crashed. Crashed. And then these guys came up. (video editors: footage of The Mexican Skull racers) The Mexican inspired Day of the Dead racer is perhaps the only time in racing history you could say it was a good thing their skull went flying. And they didn't even crash, kind of. So it was no surprise that with 121 points out of 150, the Hong Kong-based Outsign Lab won the day. [Timothy Wong, Numbskull Racer]: "Going down was actually scary, because it was slippery, and we weren't expecting that. Building this thing was definitely hard work ... 6 Year Old is China's Youngest Activist
This six-year-old boy should be out playing with his friends. Instead, he has become one of the latest, and probably the youngest, rights activists in China. Pang stands in front of a banner. It describes the illegal kidnapping of two business owners, Pang's unofficially adopted grandparents. [Pang Pang, Six-Year-Old Activist] "I'm protesting the Nantong government for illegally kidnapping Grandpa Zhang and Grandma Xu. We'll follow this case until the end and will not give up." According to rights group Human Rights Campaign in China, Zhang Junguo and Xu Yanli operated a timber business in Nantong, Jiangsu province. In January 2011, their factory was forcibly demolished, and the couple has been appealing since. Police detained the couple in September after they became involved in anti-corruption activities. Ma Bao who adopted Pang Pang, says Zhang and Xu treated the young boy like their own grandson, and he wants them released. [Ma Bo, Chinese Rights Activist] "The kid really misses his grandpa Zhang and grandma Xu. I took him along to the Political and Legislative Affairs office in Nantong. Pang Pang went to the office of the Party Secretary, sat down on the sofa and yelled for the Party Secretary to release his grandma Xu." Ma Bo says she and other activists met with Nantong officials on October 10th, but so far authorities have not indicated where Zhang and Xu are being detained. "Free China: The Courage to Believe" Debuts in Taiwan
A documentary about the persecution of Falun Gong in China may have deeper implications for the people of Taiwan. That's what a legislative assistant said after watching "Free China: The Courage to Believe" last Friday. NTD co-produced the film with World2Be productions. It follows the story of two prisoners of conscience in China, where they endured physical and mental abuse for refusing to give up the Falun Gong spiritual practice. Taiwanese legislator Huang Wen-ling was grateful to see the film. [Huang Wen-ling, Taiwanese Legislator] "We're very thankful to have this opportunity to watch the film in the Legislative Yuan. A lot of people watched the film today, and I'm sure they can spread the word, so there is greater awareness of human rights abuses in China. People need to expose it." Earlier this year, Taiwanese Falun Gong practitioner Chung Ting-pang was detained without charge for nearly two months by Mainland authorities. Chinese state-run media reported he had been involved in intercepting TV signals%mdashthe same accusations that landed Charles Lee, one of the main characters in the documentary, in jail. Speaking at the screening on Friday, Chung said these actions were necessary to expose the abuses happening in China. Gan Chen-yi, assistant to legislator Tien Chiu-chin, said the documentary is particularly relevant to Taiwan. New Chinese Stimulus on the Way, Is it Big Enough?
The Deputy Chief of China's central bank, Yi Gang, made comments in Tokyo on Sunday about the coming fiscal and monetary stimulus package which Chinese authorities hope will stabilize growth. Recently, China's former double-digit yearly growth numbers have fallen sharply enough that some are worried about a broader economic collapse. The new stimulus was decided in September. [Yi Gang, Deputy Chief, Bank of China]: "The stimulus package I think this time will be appropriate in terms of size; when I say appropriate in terms of size, that is, large enough to stabilize the growth but not too large to cause some further negative impact or negative problem in the future." The question of whether the stimulus is large enough will be one thing closely watched by investors. Exports slowed significantly in the second quarter of this year, and domestic demand has not emerged with enough strength to carry China's economy. The new stimulus includes 60 infrastructure projects worth more than $150 billion, although it has not been labeled as a formal fiscal stimulus package. Banks are already making many of the loans. Real estate, though, has been seen as key to the overall well being of the Chinese economy. And it's unknown how well this market will respond to the new plans. Speculation has been intense for years now, with the resulting empty houses and office towers regularly cited as signs of an overheated or bubble market. EU Agrees Tough New Sanctions On Iran
The European Union has agreed tough new sanctions on Iran over its disputed nuclear program. Full Story: The European Union on Monday agreed to impose new sanctions on Iran. Speaking at a news conference in Luxembourg, the German Foreign Minister says the sanctions will increase pressure on Iran over its disputed nuclear program. [Guido Westerwelle, German Foreign Minister]: "In spite of intensive negotiations over the past month, Iran continues to stall. For the time being, we see no sufficient willingness for substantial talks on the nuclear program. I wish to point out once again: Iran has the right to use nuclear energy in a peaceful manner. Civilian use of nuclear energy is not at issue with Iran, but it is obvious that nuclear arms would violate international law and therefore must not and cannot be accepted by the international community." The new restrictions on Iran are some of the toughest measures yet taken by Europe. [Guido Westerwelle, German Foreign Minister]: "We have decided on a further package of sanctions, to increase pressure and make negotiations more substantial, in the areas of trade and banking, transport and energy. In addition we will enforce measures to put an end to bypassing sanctions." As well as the disputed nuclear program, Europe is also concerned about Iran's military intentions. Bo Xilai's Son Denies He's Back in China
Bo Guagua, the son of disgraced Chinese official Bo Xilai, has denied reports he is back in China, and says he has no information on his father's impending trial. British newspaper The Telegraph reported on Sunday that Bo Guagua had left the United States and returned to China. The paper sited a source in Chongqing who reported that Bo went into a police car after arriving in Beijing, and was said to be helping with investigations against Bo Xilai. A Chinese blogger also reported separately that Bo Guagua had arrived in China last Thursday. But today Bo Guagua said he is not back in China. In an email to the New York Times, he said those reports are, quote, "without basis". He did not say where he was. Chinese state-run media last month reported Bo Xilai was under investigation for abuse of power and massive corruption, implicating unnamed family members. Bo Guagua later issued a statement online defending his father.
