Three Flushes for American Capitalism!
The greatest city in the world - New York, New York - is home to 8 million souls, a magnet for 52 million tourists a year, and legendary for the grossest public toilets this side of a Turkish prison. That makes sense, since nobody really owns public toilets, leading to the ultimate tragedy of the commons. There's a reason the Big Apple shopping blog Racked recently recommended a list of the 16 best in store bathrooms for New Yorkers on the go. Can you imagine a similar list of johns maintained by Mayor Mike Bloomberg's tidy team? Getting top marks is the restroom at the upscale accessory store Henri Bendel, where each stall is the size of an Upper West Side studio apartment. The tastefully decorated facility at the half-coffee shop, half-clothing store Saturday's Surf has beautifully designed wooden accents. Bergdorf Goodman offers bathroom-goers a delightful combination of fancy beauty products, mood lighting, and fresh-cut flowers. So forget Central Park, the Statue of Liberty, and Times Square. What makes New York great are all those private spaces that businessmen leave open for the public to trample, whether that means misusing the books at Barnes and Noble, surfing the internet at the Apple Store, or working all day at a Brooklyn coffee shop while nursing a single $2 cup of joe.New York is legendary for the grossest public toilets this side of a Turkish prison More important: It's the city's bookstores, coffee shops, boutiques, and other businesses that welcome the ... The Plight of the Alpha Female: Kay Hymowitz
"There's a tension between being an engaged parent and being an alpha. Is that an injustice? I think that's just life," says Kay Hymowitz, commenting on her article, "The Plight of the Alpha Female" in the Autumn 2012 edition of City Journal. As women increasingly become the breadwinners in society, the highest ranks of government and private enterprise remain dominated by men. Is this unfair? While many feminists point to this gender gap as evidence of discrimination, Hymowitz takes a hard look at the data, and finds that most women are choosing family over career. Her insight poses a challenge to traditional feminist notions of gender roles, pay equity, and the proper role of government in the workplace. Kay sat down to talk with ReasonTV's Kennedy about the benefits of 21st century parenting, why women often excel in family unfriendly workplaces, and more. About 9:25 minutes. Governor Scott Walker helped welcome the 2013 National School Choice Week whistle-stop train tour to Milwaukee, Wisconsin on Jan. 30. Gov. Walker was joined by Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, as well as a host of school choice advocates from around the state. "Every student, every family has a different way of succeeding. Prison for Smokers, Permits for Strippers! (Nanny of the Month, Jan '13)
Our nation's nannies, scolds, and buttinskies started 2013 with a renewed hunger to mind other people's business. One Florida city has banned dog tethering (even on your own property!) and a Texas State Rep. Bill Zedler (R-Arlington) wants to license strippers in order to dissuade women from going into that line of work (hey, at least the guy admits that the purpose of occupational licensing is to make it harder for people to do their jobs). But 2013's first nod goes to the northwest nag whose new bill, if passed, would expand the drug war by categorizing cigarettes as a Schedule III controlled substance (along with LSD). You'd need a doctor's prescription to get your mitts on tobacco products (including cigars), and if you disobey, you could be looking at a fine of $6250, up to a year in prison, or both! For reminding us of how far we've come since restaurant smoking bans, the January 2013 Nanny of the Month goes to Oregon Rep. Mitch Greenlick (D-Portland)! (To check out more of Greenlick's body of work, go here.) A little over 1 minute. "Nanny of the Month" is written and produced by Ted Balaker. Opening animation by Meredith Bragg. Ai Weiwei's First Major US Show Has Everything but the Dissident Artist Himself
In October, Washington, DC's Hirshhorn Museum opened Ai Weiwei: According to What?, the first major retrospective of works by the Chinese artist in North America. The show has received glowing reviews from art critics and visitors alike. The artist himself might share that view, if he ever gets the chance to see it. "We had always hoped that he would be here for the opening," explains Kerry Brougher, chief curator at the Smithsonian's Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. "Unfortunately, as we were in the middle of working with Ai Weiwei on the exhibition, he was arrested in China and incarcerated for 81 days." Though Weiwei was released in June of 2011, the Chinese government's refusal to return his passport makes it unlikely that he will be allowed to visit his landmark show - the latest move in a series of conflicts between the artist and the state. Whether chastising the 2008 Beijing Olympics as a "fake smile" to the world, detailing the deadly results of shoddy school construction after the Sichuan earthquake, or meticulously documenting the increasingly aggressive police measures used against him, the encounters between Weiwei and the Communist government seem to be in a constant state of escalation. Weiwei's reputation has arguably grown larger despite - or because of - the Chinese government's attempts to rein him in. Without the benefit of a passport, Weiwei has increasingly turned to the internet to engage the wider world. He has found a receptive audience ... Can Medical Tourism Save Us From Obamacare?
Outside of the United States, going to another country for medical care can lead to survival and recovery for patients otherwise facing certain death or long waits for treatment at home. Nigeria has no oncological care to speak of, so cancer-stricken citizens are increasingly going abroad for modern care. Battle-wounded Syrians are getting life-saving surgeries in Turkish hospitals. Canadians come to the US to avoid average wait times of four months for non-emergency procedures. If the double whammy of Obamacare, which will be fully up and running in 2014, and a rapidly aging population creates pronounced health-care shortages, more and more Americans may soon start looking abroad for fast, affordable, and effective treatments for all sorts of medical problems. Lewis Lapham on Legalizing Drugs, Hating the Facebook, and Curating the Past at Lapham's Quarterly
"Intoxication is the becoming of someone else or the going to somewhere else," says Lewis Lapham, editor and founder of Lapham's Quarterly. Soon after stepping down as the long-time editor at Harper's Magazine, Lapham started his eponymous quarterly - a curated magazine of historical essays, poetry, quotes, and excerpts focusing on a single topic. In the latest issue, which deals with the subject of intoxication, Lapham candidly discusses his use of drugs and alcohol and why he believes pot and most other substances should be legal. Lapham sat down with Reason's Nick Gillespie to discuss his magazine, American's unique relationship to intoxicants, and why he likens Facebook and Google to Soviet NKVD and the Gestapo. Two Cheers for the Coming Collapse of the US Economy!
"At some point, holders of Treasury securities are going to recognize that these unfunded liabilities are going to affect the fiscal capabilities of the government and then you're going to have the same situation that happened in Greece happening in the US," says Jeffrey Rogers Hummel, who is a professor of economics at San Jose State University and the author of a recent paper on the consequences of a US government default. "In the short run it's going to be painful, but in the long run it'll be a good thing." Reason's Nick Gillespie sat down with Hummel at FreedomFest 2012 for a wide-ranging discussion on monetary policy, business cycle theory, the longevity of the welfare state, and why libertarians who rail against the Fed are like "generals fighting the last war." Held each July in Las Vegas, FreedomFest is attended by around 2000 limited-government enthusiasts and libertarians a year. Reason TV spoke with over two dozen speakers and attendees. In the wake of last December's school shooting, Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-West Virginia) has proposed yet another congressional study on violent video games (he's joined in his effort by Nebraska Republican Sen. Mike Johanns). As Congress gears up for another round of scare-mongering grandstanding, Reason TV presents "Sex, Violence and Satan: 6 Unbelievably Dumb Congressional Censorship Hearings." The hearings covered include the following: 2001's House Committee on Energy and Commerce's hearing on Children and Media Violence. Popeye the Sailor identified as dangerous influence. (starts around 2:27 minutes) 1997's Senate Committee on Governmental Affairs hearing on the Social Impact of Media Violence. Sen. Joe Lieberman (D-Conn.) steals the show amid attacks on Marilyn Manson, Tupac Shakur, Cannibal Corpse and Snoop Doggy Dogg. (3:01) 1997's Senate Commerce Committee hearings on the ineffectiveness of the TV ratings system, featuring smutty clips from Friends and Beverly Hills, 90210. and testimony from Rep. Joseph Kennedy (D-Mass.) that a violent television show gave one of his sons nightmares. (4:09) 1993's Senate Committee on Governmental Affairs hearings on the scourge of ultra-realistic 16-bit video games and plastic toys including Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, and a Nintendo gaming accessory called a "Super Scope." "FEMA Won't Let Us Rebuild Our Home"
The Taylor family lives in the Natomas community in Sacramento, California. On August 24, 2012, Brad and Jennifer were driving home with their two young children when they saw smoke in their neighborhood. As they got closer to home, they realized that their house was on fire. Jennifer jumped out of the car to get the family's elderly dog and two cats to safety while Brad drove the kids to their grandmother's house down the street. Though shaken, both Brad and Jennifer were relieved that no one had been hurt. "It's just a fire," Brad said. "It can all be replaced." Little did they know that, thanks to regulations created by the Federal Emergency Managment Agency in the wake of Hurricane Katrina -- which hit land thousands of miles away from Sacramento -- their rebuilding nightmare was just beginning. Fitness Crackdown: Santa Monica Gets Tough On Trainers
Keeping up New Year's resolutions to get in shape might get tougher thanks to Santa Monica City Council's proposition to ramp up regulations on outdoor fitness classes this spring. The council is considering banning all classes with more than two participants in the city's most popular workout spot, Palisades Park. "Palisades park is a public park and doing commercial enterprise in a public park or a public facility really should have regulations around it," says Santa Monica's Director of Community and Cultural Services Karen Ginsberg. "The recommendation is to limit private trainers for compensation." Additionally, the council could impose a 15 percent fee on all trainers' profits over and above the already required business license, permit, insurance, and city tax. ReasonTV's Kennedy tried out one of the outdoor classes, Sonki Fitness' Bootcamp, to see what all the fuss was about. "It's a park, it's not a museum," says Kennedy, "this is what people should be doing with their outdoor spaces." Founder Sonki Hong has been training his students in Palisades Park for over a decade. "They should try to really work with small businesses like me instead of making it harder for me to survive," says Sonki. Written, produced and shot by Tracy Oppenheimer. "Blowhards Chronicling Blowhards" - Mediaite's Andrew Kirell and Noah Rothman
"We're taking down the old media, the ivory tower media -- the stuffy old journalism that had a lot of rules," declares Mediaite's Andrew Kirell. How has Mediaite, a popular news and opinion blog that covers politics and entertainment in the media industry, found a large and loyal audience in an era of dwindling demand for the mainstream press? Both Kirell and fellow editor Noah Rothman point to their website's willingness to challenge bedrock notions of what journalism is supposed to be. For instance, where legacy media still pushes an increasingly unbelievable belief in its reporters' "objectivity," the Mediaite staff is open about their ideological leanings. Reason's Kennedy sat down with Kirell and Rothman to discuss the rise of Mediaite, their embrace of "parasitic" journalism, and whether their personal politics make them better reporters.
