David Simon on Treme, New Orleans, the Drug War, Obama, The Wire - And Disappointing Libertarians
UPDATED 9/21/2012: On his personal website, David Simon has accused Reason TV of producing a "shanked" interview with him. For links to his criticism, our response, and full audio of our hour-and-20-minute-long conversation with him that formed the basis of this video go to reason.com ***** "At some point during the run of The Wire, I became a fellow traveler of the libertarians," says the acclaimed writer and television producer David Simon. "And then a great disappointment to them." A self-proclaimed "lefty," Simon is the creator of the The Wire, which ran on HBO from 2002 to 2008 and depicted with tragic realism the impact of the drug war on inner-city Baltimore. Over five seasons, The Wire told a series of complex, interwoven stories built around major themes of the modern American city, including the decline of the working waterfront, failing schools, faltering newspapers, the unseemly side of local politics, and, more generally, how bureaucratic institutions thwart reform-minded individuals. In writing The Wire, Simon drew on his 13-years as a reporter at The Baltimore Sun and his 1991 book, Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets, which is derived from Simon's stint as an embed with the Baltimore Police Department's homicide division. Producer Barry Levinson later turned the book into an Emmy-award-winning series that ran on NBC from 1993 to 1998. Simon co-wrote (with David Mills) The Corner (2000), an HBO miniseries that depicts inner-city Baltimore ravaged by the ... From: ReasonTV Views: 12941 177 ratings Time: 20:53 More in News & Politics

Why Your Vote Doesn't Count, Obama's Failed Narrative, Four More Years of War
"People vote not because of what voting can accomplish, but because they like to vote," writes Katherine Mangu-Ward in "Your Vote Doesn't Count," the cover story of Reason's November 2012 issue. Reason TV's Kennedy talks with Reason mag Editor in Chief Matt Welch about the new issue, which is on sale now. The November issue features a special election preview section that handicaps the most libertarian candidates running for Congress, an in-depth interview with budget-slashing Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.), and a richly reported account of how Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) scrambles the minds of left-wing progressives. November's Reason also includes Welch's "Four More Years of War," an analysis of the failed foreign policy that is shared by Republicans and Democrats, and Peter Suderman's "Obama's Failed Narrative," which looks at the ways the president mistakes his often-eloquent way with words for an ability to change the real world. What We Saw at the Occupy Anniversary Protest in NYC
What has the Occupy Wall Street (OWS) movement accomplished? On Monday, September 17, 2012 - the one-year anniversary of the original encampment in Manhattan's Zuccotti Park - Occupiers staged a day of civil disobedience and attempted to block access to the New York Stock Exchange. They were met by pre-emptive barricades from the New York Police Department, who wouldn't allow anyone into the immediate vicinity of the exchange without photo ID and proof of employment. Reason TV's Kennedy was on the scene to ask the demonstrators what they've accomplished so far, whether President Obama supports them, their opinion of libertarians, and much more. It's Time to Legalize Hemp! Q%A with CEO of Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps
"We want to give our money to American farmers," says David Bronner, head of Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps, which uses non-psychoactive hemp in its products. "Why are we continually handing it to Canadians?" The answer? Because it's illegal to grow hemp in the United States. You can import hemp from other countries, but home-grown hemp - related to marijuana but lacking any ability to get you high - is strictly verboten in the Land of the Free. Indeed, the feds consider the plant - famously grown by George Washington and one of the most versatile natural substances known to manking - the equivalent of its euphoria-inducing relative. Bronner supports lifting the ban on growing industrial hemp inside the United States. He was recently arrested outside the White House after protesting the current policy by locking himself in a metal cage with hemp plants. He sat down with Reason's Mike Riggs to discuss his arrest, the industrial applications of hemp, and the paths to legalization. About 3 minutes. Interview by Mike Riggs. Angelenos Block Ban on Medical Marijuana Dispensaries...For Now
"We're letting the city council know that they can't just come in and trump the will of the people, and that when they do things that are very unpopular, the people can stand up and say stop," says Don Duncan, California director of Americans for Safe Access. The people did say stop this September in response to Los Angeles City Council's ban on medical marijuana dispensaries. Fifty thousand Angelenos signed a petition, successfully blocking the ban that was supposed to go into effect on Sept. 6, 2012. "After the city council adopted the ban, patients, collective operators and organized labor all got together and organized a referendum campaign," says Duncan, "we were able to actually block the implementation of the ban before it even took effect and so that's a tremendous victory for patients." Duncan sat down with ReasonTV's Tracy Oppenheimer to discuss the battle for medical marijuana, which he says isn't over yet. Voters have to either overturn the ban via the ballot box this spring, or come up with their own ordinance through the voter initiative process. Duncan notes that there is massive support for medical marijuana with 77 percent of Californians supporting the regulation and control of medical cannabis. Unfortunately this support may not be enough. "The city attorney is committed to the fact that medical cannabis is illegal, and so we expect some sort of enforcement action from the city attorney that will probably involve civil measures, but that's almost ... Buckyballs vs The Consumer Products Safety Commission
"We are the first compay in 11 years who has said no to the US Consumer Products Safety Commission," says Craig Zucker, co-founder and CEO of Maxfeild and Oberton, creators of the popular magnetic desktoy Buckyballs. Citing roughly two dozen instances in which these magnets were swallowed by children and teenagers, the Consumer Products Safety Commission recently filled a lawsuit to recall and stop their sale. Zucker, however, is not backing down. "We are not going to recall the product....We'll fight it and we'll fight vigorously." "Our packaging has five warnings on it, we don't sell to stores that sell only children's products, and we don't sell to toy stores," Zucker explained. "There is a level of personal responsibility that comes into play when it comes to consumer product safety." Zucker sat down with Reason TV's Kennedy to discuss the recall, the bullying tactics employed by the CPSC, and how they are pushing back with their "Save Our Balls" campaign. "Authoritarian systems evolve," says Rebecca MacKinnon, author of Consent of the Networked: The Worldwide Struggle For Internet Freedom. "Authoritarianism in the Internet Age is not your old Cold War authoritarianism." Reason TV's Nick Gillespie sat down with MacKinnon to discuss internet freedom in the US and abroad, touching on topics such as whether or not China can successfully manage the flow of information and control the internet, what the anti-SOPA movement means for the future of the internet in the US, and whether or not the internet is indeed a net gain for liberty or just another tool to be utilized by authoritarian governments. Alan Charles Kors on Campus Speech Codes, Libertarianism, & The Case for the Humanities
"I guarantee you," Alan Charles Kors tells Nick Gillespie, "that Reason published on a campus would be defunded and that you'd be up on harassment charges every other week." Kors knows what he's talking about. As the Henry Charles Lea Professor of European History at the University of Pennsylvania and the co-founder of the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE), he has long agitated against repressive speech codes at the nation's colleges and universities. Along with co-author (and fellow FIRE co-founder) Harvey Silverglate, Kors made a book-length case in the 1999 polemic The Shadow University. Kors' interest in free expression - especially in an academic setting - blends seamlessly with his scholarship on the Enlightenment (he's the editor of Oxford's encyclopedia on the topic) and his commitment to classical liberal ideals of unfettered inquiry and freedom of conscience. Nobody is in a better position to talk about the resurgence of in loco parentis in higher education and the corrosive effects it has not just on undergraduates but professors and intellectual discourse as well. Earlier this summer, Kors (a Reason contributor) sat down with Reason TV to talk about the persistence of authoritarianism on campuses, his experiences building an experimental multicultural dorm at Penn in the early 1970s, why the much-beleaguered humanities are more important than ever, and much more. NY's 9/11 Memorial: When Did Honoring the Dead Become an Occassion for Fleecing the Living?
More than a decade after the 9/11 attacks, a new World Trade Center is finally rising, along with a memorial, museum, and a transit hub. When the projects are slated to open they'll supposedly symbolize America's strength, determination, and refusal to cave in. But they really tell a different story about taxpayer rip-offs, public-sector incompetence, and union and corporate greed. One World Trade Center, formerly known as the Freedom Tower, will be the most expensive office building in American history by a long shot. Cost overruns have driven the price tag to $3.8 billion. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the public agency that's running the show, is sticking commuters with part of the tab by hiking tolls across the Hudson River to $12. The new complex will dump 3-million square feet of office space into a soft rental market meaning Cond%eacute Nast, the flush publisher of The New Yorker, Wired, and Vanity Fair, got beau coups subsidies to move in. And who-other-than the federal government signed on to fill up five floors at a cost of $351 million over 20 years? Even The New York Times' stimulus-pimping columnist Joe Nocera has called World Trade Center rebuilding an "example of just about everything wrong with modern government," asking, "where's the Tea Party when you need them?" Just down the street from the Trade Center, a federally-financed transit hub is a billion dollars over budget, now coming in around $3.4 billion. Construction costs for the September ... Michael Moynihan on the Politics of Travel Guides
"Travel guide writers are obsessed with authenticity," says Reason Contibuting Editor Michael C. Moynihan. "You'll find people who say 'isn't it adorable when you go to Havana that they have all these Packards from the 1950s?' Well, no it's not. This is a pretty grim assessment of the economics of Cuba." In a recent piece in Foreign Policy, Moynihan dissects several popular travel guides and finds "the guidebooks are clotted with historical revisionism, factual errors, and a toxic combination of Orientalism and pathological self-loathing." Moynihan sat down with Reason TV's Kennedy to discuss his article, the political and cultural biases in travel guides, and why the burqa should not be considered "a tool for social mobility" as Lonely Planet's guide to Afghanistan suggests. Democrat Debt Solutions: Tax the Rich, Spend More Money
As the national debt finally passes the $16 trillion mark, are Democrats serious about addressing deficit spending? Several Democratic delegates and supporters that Reason TV spoke with at the 2012 Democratic National Convention said that Democrats care deeply about the debt, but when it came to offering solutions, they said that serious reductions in government spending would actually be counterproductice. Instead, many suggested increasing public works spending to stimulate job growth, despite the fact that President Obama's first stimulus still hasn't moved the economy above 8 percent unemployment. They also defended Obama's proposal to raise taxes on anyone earning more than $200000 a year, even though this won't even come close to closing the annual budget deficit. Approximately 4:00. Occupy vs. DNC: Are Dems Crony Capitalists?
Occupy Wall Street held protests outside Time Warner Arena on Day 2 of the 2012 Democratic National Convention. Members of Occupy claim that both Republicans and Democrats are too cozy with Wall Street and big business, while many mainstream Democrats claim that President Obama and members of Congress are the leaders needed to fight on behalf of the consumer. At the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, recalled California Gov. Gray Davis tells Reason TV that massive public debt risks swallowing up the economy "like Pac Man," that public-sector union pensions put into place during his time in office need to be reformed, and that the federal Dept. of Justice should be "focusing on other things" than raiding Golden State medical marijuana dispensaries. Immigrant Protestors Arrested at the DNC, Feat. Rosario Dawson
CHARLOTTE, NC-- Ten undocumented protesters were arrested outside the Time Warner Cable convention center, September 4, 2012, where the Democratic National Convention is being held. The protest was put on by an organization called, Undocumented and Unafraid, and featured a bus tour from Phoenix, AR, to Charlotte, NC. Protesters were surrounded by police in pouring rain as supporters and reporters looked on. The event never turned violent and the ten arrested protesters were taken away in vans. The event was meant to bring more attention to deportations by the Obama administration over the last four years. The President has deported 1.4 million undocumented immigrants in his first term, 1.5 times faster than his predecessor, President George W. Bush. The current president recently enacted a deferred action program for young undocumented immigrants to avoid deportation. "He has deported more people and yet at the same time [President Obama] is doing deferred action for dreamers, so there is always a mixed pot that we get," said actress Rosario Dawson, who attended the protest. "We can never seem to get someone to stand 100 percent and do the right thing." Approximately 2:37. Produced by Paul Detrick and Zach Weissmuller. How 'Pro-Choice' are Democrats?
The official Democratic Party platform "strongly and unequivocally supports Roe v. Wade and a woman's right to make decisions regarding her pregnancy, including a safe and legal abortion, regardless of ability to pay." Reason TV talked with Democratic delegates and supporters at the 2012 Democratic National Convention in Charlotte and found that most were on board with the party's strong pro-choice stance. But when pressed to talk about whether or not they were pro-choice in areas of human activity beyond abortion, delegates and supporters seemed less certain and, at times, outright hostile to the notion of increased choice.
