Citizenship Denied: DOMA, Immigration, and Gay Marriage
While President Obama theoretically endorsed same-sex marriage in mid-2012, the fact is that the Defense of Marriage Act still remains the law of the land. And when it comes to immigration policy, this law continues to put bi-national same-sex couples in a bind. Reason TV profiled one such couple, Hope Hall, an American citizen and military veteran, and her Canadian partner and soon-to-be wife Nathalie Gaulthier, who runs an internationally renowned circus arts school and has spent 17 years living in working in the US Though marriage is often the one reliable path to citizenship for many straight couples, the Defense of Marriage Act prohibits United States Immigration and Citizenship Services from granting the same legal rights to gay couples, even those married in a state where gay marriage is legal. "I could just lie to the government and marry a man," says Gaulthier. "But I don't want to lie. I want to be honest." About 6:52. Written and Edited by Zach Weissmueller. Interviews by Kennedy. Atlas Shrugged Part II: What We Saw at the World Premiere in DC
Atlas Shrugged Part II, the second of three films based on Ayn Rand's controversial 1957 novel, hits movie screens across the country on Friday, October 12, 2012. (For more information on the film, go to atlasshruggedmovie.com) Reason's Matt Welch was on hand for the movie's world premiere in Washington, DC on Tuesday, October 3 to ask viewers why they thought Rand's ideas about individualism and free-market capitalism remain so popular - and yet so embattled - in contemporary America. Among the people Welch talked with are John Aglialoro and Harmon Kaslow, producers of Atlas Shrugged; John Fund of the Wall Street Journal; William Dunn of the Reason Foundation; Matt Kibbe of FreedomWorks; David Kelley of The Atlas Society; Fred Smith of Competitive Enterprise Institute; David Boaz of the Cato Institute; Carla Gericke of the Free State Project; and Mary Katharine Ham of Hotair.com. Reason-Rupe Poll: Obama Leads Romney, 52-45 Percent; Gary Johnson Pulls 6 Percent
President Barack Obama will beat challenger Mitt Romney 52 percent to 45 percent in November's election, and the Libertarian Party's Gary Johnson will garner 6 percent of the total while pulling votes from both major-party candidates. Those are some of the findings of the latest Reason-Rupe Poll, which surveyed 1006 adults in September 13-17. Full results of the poll are online here: reason.com About 61 percent of respondents said that wealth disparities are an acceptable part of the American economic system and not something the government should try to fix. "One of the reasons they may believe that," explains Reason's director of polling, Emily Ekins, "is that 59 percent think that individuals have an equal opportunity to succeed in this country." Ekins also notes that while pundits decry legislative gridlock in Congress, 45 percent of Americans want the federal government to pass fewer laws, compared with around one-third who think it should be more active. "However," she notes, "there is one law that voters overwhelmingly would like to see passed - and that's a law to audit the Federal Reserve." Wall Street Journal's Stephen Moore on the 2012 Election
Reason TV's Nick Gillespie asks economist Stephen Moore how candidates' economic policies will affect the outcome of November's election. Moore, former president of the Club for Growth and current member of the Wall Street Journal's editorial board, says President Obama does not understand how the economy works. At the same time, Moore continues, Republican challenger Mitt Romney's resume of successful business is being used against him. Too Big To Regulate: Barron's Gene Epstein on Dodd-Frank
"The reason there is no mention of Fannie (Mae) and Freddie (Mac) in the bill, is because it's named after two of their puppets: Dodd and Frank." Barron's Economics Editor Gene Epstein lays into the hypocrisy of the aforementioned Dodd-Frank bill at a Freedomfest 2012 panel titled "Too Big to Regulate," hosted by the Reason Foundation's Director of Economic Research Anthony Randazzo. The panel focused on problems with overregulation in the financial services industry, with a specific focus on the Dodd-Frank legislation. Rachel Carson's Silent Spring at 50 Years
"It's not polite to talk about brown and black people dying because rich white people in America feel better about themselves when the brown and black people don't get to use DDT," says the University of Alabama's Andrew Morriss, co-editor of the new book Silent Spring at 50: The False Crises of Rachel Carson. Published by the Cato Institute, the collection of essays by environmentalists, law professors, economists, and other analysts argues that the legacy of Carson's best-known book - widely considered the starting point of the modern environmentalist movement and the international ban on the malaria-fighting pesticide DDT - has caused many more problems than it has solved. Reason's Katherine Mangu-Ward sat down with Morriss to talk about Carson's work and influence on environmental policy. About 5.30 minutes. Camera by Meredith Bragg and Joshua Swain; edited by Swain. Undocumented students who now have conditional, permanent residency thanks to the DREAM Act have been protesting Mitt Romney and his stance on immigration, or lack thereof, across the country. "He advocates for self-deportation, he is against very logical legislation like the DREAM act, like deferred action," says Sofia Campos of DreamTeam LA ReasonTV caught up with some of the protesters in downtown Los Angeles, and questioned them on their views of Romney, Obama, and a realistic future for immigration policy. Boob Over Bottle: Mike Bloomberg's Latest Nanny State Dictate
New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg, a two-time Nanny of the Month and 2009's Nanny of the Year, is back to save us from ourselves yet again! In order to promote breastfeeding, Bloomberg has ordered all public city hospitals to lock up free samples of baby formula. New mothers who are unable to breastfeed - or simply choose not to - can still get formula, but only after enduring a lecture from a hospital employee on the benefits of the boob over the bottle. Reason TV's Kennedy spoke with Susan Burger, a certified lactation consultant, who supports the mayor's initiative on the grounds that "the real intent of that law is to protect breastfeeding mothers [and] their freedom of choice to breastfeed." David Simon on Treme, New Orleans, the Drug War, Obama, The Wire - And Disappointing Libertarians
UPDATED 9/21/2012: On his personal website, David Simon has accused Reason TV of producing a "shanked" interview with him. For links to his criticism, our response, and full audio of our hour-and-20-minute-long conversation with him that formed the basis of this video go to reason.com ***** "At some point during the run of The Wire, I became a fellow traveler of the libertarians," says the acclaimed writer and television producer David Simon. "And then a great disappointment to them." A self-proclaimed "lefty," Simon is the creator of the The Wire, which ran on HBO from 2002 to 2008 and depicted with tragic realism the impact of the drug war on inner-city Baltimore. Over five seasons, The Wire told a series of complex, interwoven stories built around major themes of the modern American city, including the decline of the working waterfront, failing schools, faltering newspapers, the unseemly side of local politics, and, more generally, how bureaucratic institutions thwart reform-minded individuals. In writing The Wire, Simon drew on his 13-years as a reporter at The Baltimore Sun and his 1991 book, Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets, which is derived from Simon's stint as an embed with the Baltimore Police Department's homicide division. Producer Barry Levinson later turned the book into an Emmy-award-winning series that ran on NBC from 1993 to 1998. Simon co-wrote (with David Mills) The Corner (2000), an HBO miniseries that depicts inner-city Baltimore ravaged by the ... From: ReasonTV Views: 12941 177 ratings Time: 20:53 More in News & Politics

Why Your Vote Doesn't Count, Obama's Failed Narrative, Four More Years of War
"People vote not because of what voting can accomplish, but because they like to vote," writes Katherine Mangu-Ward in "Your Vote Doesn't Count," the cover story of Reason's November 2012 issue. Reason TV's Kennedy talks with Reason mag Editor in Chief Matt Welch about the new issue, which is on sale now. The November issue features a special election preview section that handicaps the most libertarian candidates running for Congress, an in-depth interview with budget-slashing Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.), and a richly reported account of how Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) scrambles the minds of left-wing progressives. November's Reason also includes Welch's "Four More Years of War," an analysis of the failed foreign policy that is shared by Republicans and Democrats, and Peter Suderman's "Obama's Failed Narrative," which looks at the ways the president mistakes his often-eloquent way with words for an ability to change the real world. What We Saw at the Occupy Anniversary Protest in NYC
What has the Occupy Wall Street (OWS) movement accomplished? On Monday, September 17, 2012 - the one-year anniversary of the original encampment in Manhattan's Zuccotti Park - Occupiers staged a day of civil disobedience and attempted to block access to the New York Stock Exchange. They were met by pre-emptive barricades from the New York Police Department, who wouldn't allow anyone into the immediate vicinity of the exchange without photo ID and proof of employment. Reason TV's Kennedy was on the scene to ask the demonstrators what they've accomplished so far, whether President Obama supports them, their opinion of libertarians, and much more. It's Time to Legalize Hemp! Q%A with CEO of Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps
"We want to give our money to American farmers," says David Bronner, head of Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps, which uses non-psychoactive hemp in its products. "Why are we continually handing it to Canadians?" The answer? Because it's illegal to grow hemp in the United States. You can import hemp from other countries, but home-grown hemp - related to marijuana but lacking any ability to get you high - is strictly verboten in the Land of the Free. Indeed, the feds consider the plant - famously grown by George Washington and one of the most versatile natural substances known to manking - the equivalent of its euphoria-inducing relative. Bronner supports lifting the ban on growing industrial hemp inside the United States. He was recently arrested outside the White House after protesting the current policy by locking himself in a metal cage with hemp plants. He sat down with Reason's Mike Riggs to discuss his arrest, the industrial applications of hemp, and the paths to legalization. About 3 minutes. Interview by Mike Riggs.
