Roderick Long on Race, Gender, Equality and Libertarianism
"We don't have the right to subordinate other people to our ends or treat them as objects for our uses," says Roderick Long, professor of philosophy at Auburn University and President of the Molinari Institute. "And that is a fundamental kind of equality that I think is at the heart of libertarianism." Reason TV talked with Long at Libertopia 2012 in San Diego. Topics included proper ways to deal with discrimination without state interference, why sometimes political correctness is good, and why libertarians should support some forms of equality. Athens of the Prairie: How Columbus, Indiana Got Great Architecture
Columbus, Indiana is a city of around 40000 people located an hour south of Indianapolis. Columbus is exactly the kind of city you'd expect to find in the Midwest, except for one curious thing. The American Institute of Architects has ranked Columbus 6th in the nation for architectural innovation and design, right behind New York, Chicago, Boston, San Francisco and Washington, DC. The architectural richness of Columbus isn't the result of some visionary planning board. Nor are the zoning laws in Columbus different than those in most other Indiana cities. Columbus has fascinating architecture because in the 1950s industrialist and philanthropist J. Irwin Miller (of the Cummins Engine Company) decided that he wanted to live in a more visually interesting city. To this end, Miller offered to pay the architect's bill for any new public building in Columbus. Today, Columbus boasts more than 70 buildings designed by internationally celebrated architects like IM Pei, Eliel Saarinen, Eero Saarinen, Richard Meier and Harry Weese. One man's philanthropy sparked, as Bradley Brooks of the Indianapolis Museum of Art puts it, "an idea that is moving a community forward." Approximately 4 minutes. Lance Armstrong Cheated to Win. Is that Wrong?
After months of bad press, the greatest competitive cyclist of all time has officially hit rock bottom: The Lance Armstrong Foundation has dropped the name of its eponymous creator and will now be known as the Livestrong Foundation. Rest easy, Lance, it can't get much -- or is that any? -- worse. He may be a sanctimonious jerk whose doping denials are less convincing than a Lindsay Lohan rehab stint, but should he be pilloried for doing what all top cyclists - and increasingly, all of us - are doing: pursuing better living through chemistry? Media Manipulation and Unconventional Marketing: Author Ryan Holiday on "Trust Me I'm Lying"
"I've manufactured controversies, done stunts, planted fake stories," says Ryan Holiday, media strategist and author of new book, Trust Me I'm Lying: Confessions of a Media Manipulator. Holiday sat down with ReasonTV's Tracy Oppenheimer to talk about his own experiences manipulating the media for clients like Tucker Max, and the insight he's since gained into the new world of journalism. "There's no question that I think it's great that people have access to publishing in a way they have never had before, but there is the law of unintended consequences and what that's done in this case is make misinformation a lot easier," says Holiday, "we've embraced this new technology, but we haven't erected any defenses, made any changes or changed how we consume the news, or believe what we read based on these changes." Watch Ron Paul's Farewell Address!
On November 14, 2012, retiring Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) gave his farewell speech to Congress. In a public career that included three stints in Congress (1976-1977; 1979-1985; and 1997-present) and a run for president as the Libertarian Candidate (1988), no living elected official has done more to advance the ideals of limited government and a libertarian approach to federal government. His longshot bids for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008 and 2012 radically altered the national conversation on entitlements, fiscal and monetary policy, foreign policy, and crony capitalism, and his success with online fundraising and organization has set the example that others will be following for years to come. The groups he has created, including Young Americans for Liberty and Campaign for Liberty, will continue to grow in size and influence. Paul used his final address in the House of Representatives to draw attention to growing violations of civil liberties, a chronic economic crisis brought on out-of-control government spending and debt, the ease with which the country goes to (undeclared) war, and the immoral willingness to use violence to achieve desired social ends. As Paul's biographer, Reason staffer Brian Doherty, noted, Ron Paul is "a true American original. No politician talks like this, and I suspect it will be a long time before another does. Ideas like this will be much harder to find in the House of Representatives with Paul gone, and we will all be the ... From: ReasonTV Views: 15557 551 ratings Time: 48:54 More in News & Politics

Oklahoma Doctors vs. Obamacare
Three years ago, Dr. Keith Smith, co-founder and managing partner of the Surgery Center of Oklahoma, took an initiative that would only be considered radical in the health care industry: He posted online a list of prices for 112 common surgical procedures. The 51-year-old Smith, a self-described libertarian, and his business partner, Dr. Steve Lantier, founded the Surgery Center 15 years ago, after they became disillusioned with the way patients were treated at St. Anthony Hospital in Oklahoma City, where the two men worked as anesthesiologists. In 1997, Smith and Lantier bought the shell of a former surgical center with the aim of creating a for-profit facility that could deliver first-rate care at a fraction of what traditional hospitals charge. The major cause of exploding US heath care costs is the third-party payer system, a text-book concept in which A buys goods or services from B that are paid for by C. Because private insurance companies or the government generally pick up most of the tab for medical services, patients don't have the normal incentive to seek out value. The Surgery Center's consumer-driven model could become increasingly common as Americans look for alternatives to the traditional health care market%mdashan unintended consequence of Obamacare. Patients may have no choice but to look outside the traditional health care industry in the face of higher costs and reduced access to doctors and hospitals. Ladies, We're Screwed: Why Obama's Re-election is Bad for Choice
Obama's re-election is great for moms, right? Aren't we just a bunch of mindless free spenders, so in love with humanity we want to support every cause and child as though they were each our own? Oh, hells no. From jobs to health care to education, let's face it ladies, we're screwed...and not in the much needed 50 Shades of Grey way. This election all boils down to choice. Because ours are now sadly limited. To make a simplistic sexist argument, how would you like it if you waltzed into the shoe department at Nordstrom's or Bloomingdale's and instead of ankle booties and wedges you found one or two styles of sensible, comfortable clogs? To borrow a term from Joe Biden, malarkey! With the employer mandate, small businesses are now compelled by law to provide health care for their full-time employees. What will this do? Will it bolster families and working moms by offering free medical care to those in need? Hardly! Many small business owners desperate to stay afloat will abandon full-time employees for their lesser trained part-time brethren to stave off government insurance mandates. Better to have three part-time knuckle draggers than two well qualified full-timers, and that means fewer hours and smaller paychecks for working families who would have otherwise had greater health care choices and would have been well able to attain private health care on a full-time salary. More families will be pushed to qualify for Medicaid, but according to the Washington Times, 60% of ... From: ReasonTV Views: 20161 589 ratings Time: 02:18 More in News & Politics

Khan Academy Founder Talks Radical Education Reform and The One World Schoolhouse
"There's a lot more demand for people who want to just improve themselves than anyone would have guessed," says author Salman Khan, founder of the free educational video series that bears his name and the new book, The One World Schoolhouse: Education Reimagined. Originally conceived to help his cousins learn math, Khan Academy now offers free online lectures and video tutorials to more than 6 million students each month. Videos covering topics as diverse as mathematics, physics, history, and economics have garnered over 200 million views and generated significant funding from both the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Google.Reason TV's Nick Gillespie sat down with Khan to discuss how to radically transform American education, why technology is never the solution reformers expect, and how massive amounts of money go missing every day in conventional public schools. The Fallacy of Net Neutrality: Thomas Hazlett on the FCC & Consumer Protection
"I'm very confident a hundred years from now we won't have an FCC," says Thomas Hazlett, Reason contributor and George Mason economics professor. Internet service providers are coming under scrutiny from both the FCC and net neutrality supporters who want to ensure unrestricted consumer access to the Web. However, Hazlett points out that the fear over ISPs limiting Web content is unfounded and government "has no idea what the optimal business model is" to effectively regulate. Hazlett sat down with Reason TV's Nick Gillespie to discuss net neutrality, the Internet, and and his Encounters Broadside book "The Fallacy of Net Neutrality." 3 Reasons Mitt Romney and Republicans Lost Big in Election 2012
Despite a rotten economy, a miserable foreign policy, and a terrible record of deporting mostly Hispanic immigrants and raiding medical marijuana dispensaries that are legal under state law, Barack Obama handily won a second term as president and Democrats even picked up seats in the US Senate. Here are three reasons Mitt Romney and Republicans lost big in Election 2012 -- and how they might win future contests. 1. Welcome immigrants, don't shun them. Back in the day, Ronald Reagan granted amnesty to millions and George W. Bush pulled high percentages of the latino vote as governor of Texas and president of the United States. Mitt Romney and the party's palpable disdain for immigrants -- Romney called for "self-deportation" for god's sake -- is not only grossly inhumane and un-economic. It's no way to speak to an increasingly mutli-ethnic and gloriously mongrelized America. 2. Pledge Unconditional Surrender in the Drug War. Voters in Colorado and Washington state have legalized marijuana, a substance Barack Obama once used heavily and now arrests people in record numbers for selling as medicine. The GOP should take the lead in ending the war on drugs, a life-destroying, money-wasting, Constitution-shredding tragedy that is antithetical to limited government and personal responsibility. 3. Stay Out of the Bedroom, For Good. Marriage equality initiatives won in Maine, Maryland, and Washington and an anti-gay-marriage amendment lost in Minnesota. Republican candidate ... Obama Wins and Nothing Changes; The Wildly Unpopular Status Quo Is Ratified!
"After four years of a crappy economy, bipartisan dissatisfaction with bailout economics, and populous revolts on the right and the left, we are seeing basically the exact same government we had on November 6th," says Reason magazine Editor in Chief Matt Welch. "The status quo, which has never been less popular, has just been ratified." And yet, says Welch, big wins on marijuana legalization and gay marriage give limited government types a lot to be happy about. Approximately 1.45 minutes. Shot and edited by Jim Epstein.
