Consumerism, Sex, Advertising, and Human Nature: A Talk With Evolutionary Psychologist Gad Saad
"The Ferrari is exactly the same in the human context," says evolutionary psychologist Gad Saad, "as the peacock's tail is on the peacock." Saad is an evolutionary behavioral scientist at Concordia University and author of the book The Consuming Instinct: What Juicy Burgers, Ferraris, Pornography, and Gift Giving Reveal about Human Nature, in which he argues that most consumer behavior can be explained by evolutionary psychology. Reason.tv's Zach Weissmueller sat down with Saad to discuss why most Ferrari owners are men, whether or not advertising executives manipulate our minds, the strong political opposition to the evolutionary sciences from across the spectrum, and the evolutionary significance of Sir Mix-a-lot's "Baby Got Back." Medical marijuana is now legal in 16 states plus the District of Columbia, according to Rob Kampia, co-founder and executive director of the Marijuana Policy Project. Kampia speaks to Reason.tv's Nick Gillespie, and says that advocates for legalizing marijuana have recently seen the best run of victories, ever. He explains why he thinks marijuana has moved to the back burner of political issues, and why this might cost President Obama come November of next year. Held each July in Las Vegas, FreedomFest is attended by roughly 2000 libertarians and advocates of limited government. Post-Punk Icon Joe Jackson on The Nanny State, Smoking Bans, & His Next Musical Adventure
"A smoking ban in bars is saying that adult citizens are not allowed to use a legal substance even though they're very highly taxed for doing so in a place that is private property," explains Joe Jackson, the hitmeister behind indelible tunes such as "Look Sharp!," "Is She Really Going Out With Him?," and, yes, "(Everything Gives You) Cancer." Jackson's not a smoker himself but he insists that smoking bans and other for-your-own-good restrictions infantalize us all and challenge basic concepts of freedom. "You're throwing out the window the property right of the owner of that establishment, freedom of choice, a lot of things, compared to a health risk [from second- and third-hand smoke] that is really unproven." Jackson's antipathy for the creeping nanny state in his native England and his longtime home of New York City led him to write a meticulously researched essay called "Smoking, Lies and The Nanny State." It also led him to finally flee New York and London, setting up residence in Berlin because there he at least feels like he is relatively "free" and "treated like an adult." Jackson sat down with Reason.tv's Nick Gillespie and talked about his frustrations as an anti-smoking ban activist, the "gathering storm of prohibitionism," and the bold and risky evolutions of his signature musical style over the years. Singularity University: A School for Entrepreneurs Who Want to Change the World
Founded in 2009 by Ray Kurzweil and Peter Diamandis, Singularity University is a start-up university in Silicon Valley. SU's mission is "...to assemble, educate and inspire a cadre of leaders who strive to understand and facilitate the development of exponentially advancing technologies to address humanity's challenges." Singularity University is not your father's college. In August of 2011, Reason.tv's Paul Feine and Alex Manning traveled to Singularity University to get to know a few of the 80 students who participated in SU's 10-week interdisciplinary summer graduate program. We encountered a fascinating group of young entrepreneurs who have big plans to use technology to help the world's poor...and make a profit! Approximately 6 minutes. Kurt Loder on Film: The Good, the Bad, & the Godawful
"As Keith Richards says, 90 percent of everything is crap." Kurt Loder reviews movies for Reason.com and Creators Syndicate, quotes the legendary Rolling Stones guitarist to explain why most of the reviews in his new book, The Good, The Bad and The God-Awful: 21st-Century Movie Reviews are negative. Loder says he loves movies, but because of the constant demand for new product, the bad movies will inevitably outnumber the good ones. In this interview with Reason.tv's Nick Gillespie, Loder offers up a few examples of some recent underrated cinematic gems, some god-awful big-budget fiascos and why he devoted an entire chapter to the enigma that is Nicolas Cage's movie career. Libertarian To Be Elected? An Interview with Libertarian City Councilman Ed Coleman
"The numbers are looking pretty good that I'm going to officially win as a libertarian this time," says Indianapolis City Councilman Ed Coleman. Coleman is currently running for re-election to Indianapolis City Council in November, and hopes to continue his libertarian policies as an official member of the Libertarian Party, after leaving the Republican Party during his previous term. At FreedomFest 2011, Reason's Matt Welch sat down with Coleman to talk about which issues he has already tackled while in office, and what he plans to do during his next term, if elected. Peter Schiff at Occupy Wall Street (OWS): Uncut, Unfiltered, Unleashed!
Back by popular demand, it's Peter Schiff at Occupy Wall Street. And this time, he's uncut, unfiltered, and unleashed! Last week, Reason.tv released an 18-minute video of investment guru, radio show host, and unflappable defender of capitalism Peter Schiff as he spent three hours among the Occupy Wall Street protesters in Manhattan's Zuccotti Park. ( www.youtube.com ) Standing next to a sign reading "I Am The 1%, Let's Talk," Schiff debated, argued, and occasionally found common ground with the Occupiers. In response to the overwhelming demand for more Schiff at OWS, we're happy to release all the audible footage we've got - almost two hours worth. Beyond his ability to answer all questions, the most amazing thing is how Schiff wins the hearts and minds of many Occupy diehards by explaining the differences between cronyism and capitalism, the need for sound money, and why the government can't be trusted to regulate the very banks it bailed out. How a Local Blog Broke the Kelly Thomas Story: A conversation with Friends for Fullerton's Future
The pretrial hearing for excessive force and murder charges filed against Officer Manuel Ramos and Cpl. Jay Cicinelli in the death of Kelly Thomas begins November 4, 2011. Thomas was a 37 year old schizophrenic drifter who was beaten to death by officers at a Fullerton, California, bus depot in July 2011 . The charges came down after multiple headlines were made, not by local media, but by a local small-government blog in Fullerton called Friends for Fullerton's Future . The blog was the first to publish a horrific picture of Thomas in the hospital and a chilling video of the incident captured by a cell phone video camera. "The picture was so horrific that the local news channels wouldn't show it and a lot of times they don't think there is much of a story there because they get the police version of the story," says Travis Kiger, a blogger at Friends for Fullerton's Future. Kiger and Chris Thompson, also a blogger, sat down with Reason TV to talk about how the blog broke the story and what they think contributed to the international media attention. Topics include: The lack of public information in the city of Fullerton; the decline of local media; reaction to charges filed by district attorney Tony Rackauckas; and how citizens can keep government accountable in their own cities. Steven Pinker on The Decline of Violence & "The Better Angels of Our Nature"
You are less likely to die a violent death today than at any other time in human history. In fact, violence has been on a steady decline for centuries now. That's the arresting claim made by Harvard University cognitive neuroscientist Steven Pinker in his new book, The Better Angels of Our Nature: Why Violence Has Declined. Just a couple of centuries ago, violence was pervasive. Slavery was widespread; wife and child beating an acceptable practice; heretics and witches burned at the stake; pogroms and race riots common, and warfare nearly constant. Public hangings, bear-baiting, and even cat burning were popular forms of entertainment. By examining collections of ancient skeletons and scrutinizing current day tribal societies, anthropologists have found that people were nine times more likely to be killed in tribal warfare than to die of war and genocide in even the war-torn 20th century. The murder rate in medieval Europe was 30 times higher than today. What happened? Human nature did not change, but our institutions did, encouraging people to restrain their natural tendencies toward violence. Over the course of more than 850 pages of data and analysis, Pinker identifies a series of institutional changes that have led to decreasing levels of life-threatening violence. The rise of states 5000 years ago dramatically reduced tribal conflict. In recent centuries, the spread of courtly manners, literacy, commerce, and democracy have reduced violence even more. Polite behavior ... From: ReasonTV Views: 13931 247 ratings Time: 09:48 More in News & Politics

Will the Ohio Healthcare Freedom Amendment Sink Obamacare?
"If you're going to take away liberty and property, there has to be some sort of due process involved," says Chris Littleton, the head of Ohioans for Healthcare Freedom and a Tea Party leader in the Buckeye state. "In this case, as citizens, we feel that those things are fundamentally inhibited and we want the Supreme Court to hear our case on this." Littleton's group is pushing an upcoming ballot initiative that would amend the state constitution to prevent citizens' involuntary participation in any health-insurance system. The US Supreme Court is widely expected to issue a ruling on the constituationality of what's known as the "individual mandate" in Obamacare and Littelton thinks passage of the Ohio Healthcare Freedom Amendment will give his state unique legal standing: "This is citizen-initiated, which is very unique. If it passes, Ohio will be the only state that's done something like that." While most challenges to the individual mandate revolve around the limits of Congress' commerce clause powers, Littleton believes the amendment will activate due process and 10th Amendment considerations. Littleton sat down with Reason.tv's Nick Gillespie to discuss the Healthcare Freedom Amendment and the similarities between the Occupy Movement and the Tea Party. "I sympathize with the Occupy people...They're sensing that the system is broken," explains Littleton. "But it seems their answer to things is the confiscation of wealth...where [the Tea Party] advocates for ... From: ReasonTV Views: 7671 181 ratings Time: 05:20 More in News & Politics

EU Bans Free-Range Kids! Nanny of the Month October 2011!
Turns out minding other people's business is a worldwide affliction, and in this very special edition of Nanny of the Month, we explore nannyism across the pond. Fat taxes are all the rage in Europe. After the skinny Danes slapped a tax on foods high in saturated fats, other European pols%mdashincluding British Prime Minister David Cameron%mdashhave considered following suit. And in Australia's Northern Territory, they're bringing alcohol prohibition back%mdashincrementally, that is%mdashby barring problem drinkers from buying grog. What could possibly go wrong! But in the first-ever Nanny of the Month Global Edition, top dishonors go to the European Union's control freaks who have cracked down on free-range kids, slapping regulations on everything from baby rattlers (which have brand-new noise restrictions) to blowing up balloons (not to be done by tots under age eight!). Approximately 1.20 minutes. "Nanny of the Month" is written and produced by Ted Balaker. Opening animation by Meredith Bragg.
