At her Belgharia residence in Kolkata, Arunima Datta greeted us to an endearing world. Next to her sat her guru Shri Arabinda Roy, visibly struck by the presence of intruders in the music room. But the dynamics between them was frank and candid and we got excited at what was to unfold in the next few hours of our soiree.
Arunima clearly maintains to this day that she was fortunate to find in Shri Arabinda Ray the traits she wished for in a guru. In fact, working as a school teacher, she accidently met him at the staff room, explaining tabla beats to a group. She was struck by the profundity of his knowledge and immediately decided to know more about him. After continuing her persuasion for more than two years, she was finally accepted under his aegis. Soon she discovered the many sides to her guru and his large range of musical interests ranging from bhajan, khayal and folk-songs to his dexterity with several musical instruments including the tabla and harmonium. Though she was always inclined to music from a very early age, she was not content with the quality of her music lessons and longed for a guru. Under the taleem of Shri Arabinda Ray, she was not only trained as a vocalist but was also inspired to learn the harmonium. Arunima maintains that the meeting with her guru, who is now almost like a member of her family, was destined to be a turning-point in her music career.

Before presenting a few excellent and interesting live songs in Bengali and their English originals, Lipika chats about her background and experience and shares thoughts with WBRi listeners in this video interview.
Speaking about the popularity of Nazrul geet in Bengal, Lipika is of the opinion that although the songs of Nazrul have not attained the same measure of popularity in West Bengal as compared to Rabindrasangeet, yet there is considerable demand for his songs, but only amongst certain groups of people. She attributes it to the lack of awareness and proper presentation of Nazrul geet. Talking about the differences between the two forms, Lipika believes that apart from the obvious disparities in terms of the rhythmic and tonal qualities, Nazrul geet has a far greater impact amongst the common masses because of the simplicity of its lyrics, whereas Rabindrasangeet has greater appeal amongst the educated classes. She realizes that there needs to be much more awareness in West Bengal about Nazrul songs before it attains the scale of popularity as in Bangladesh. The reason for this, she believes, is that the pattern of music preferred in Bengal is very different from that in Bangladesh. As such, an introduction of varied musical patterns can help in a greater acceptance of Nazrul songs here in Bengal.

Learning from his father about the importance to seek for the right master to learn music, Pt. Rupak Kulkarni openly confessed of being fortunate to have a legend for a master. At the age of 9, he became a devoted disciple to the legendary flautist Pt. Hari Prasad Chaurasia, taking arduous lessons from him. The bond between the master and disciple deepened over the years and he remains indebted to his master till today. Letting out an early anecdote between the two, Pt. Kulkarni mentions the difficult experience of having to master the raag Bhairavi for 5 long years, simply to prove to his master that he had the patience necessary to pursue music. In his guru, he found the perfect blend of a tutor and performer, a quality that is rarely found in most virtuosos. Graduating with economics and political science, Pt. Kulkarni, who belongs to the Maihar Gharana, continued to keep music as his central focus. However, he maintains that biggest challenge facing him was to demystify the overwhelming influence of his Guru and create a distinctive style of his own. This is why he began to develop several innovative styles, such as playing in the staccato style at double speed and mastering breath control with dexterous finger work.
