Whispering Willows and Lying Lilies: The Chemical Dialogues of Plant Behavior

Plants provide the life support systems for humans and all other animals on Earth, yet most people think of them as nothing more than scenery, or primarily as renewable commodities. However, biologists have begun to appreciate that plants play far more active, strategic roles in their own survival and success than was formerly appreciated, through adaptive responses to environmental stress and through complex above and below ground communication networks, mediated by chemistry. As humans continue to explore the pharmacopoeia of secondary products produced by plants for their medicinal uses, biologists have learned that many of these compounds constitute an ancient language by which plants communicate with themselves, their neighbors, enemies and partners, on a time scale that few humans can appreciate. Professor Robert Raguso's talk explores these new discoveries and challenges the audience to listen to their gardens, forests and meadows with new ears (and noses).

Join Elaine Wethington and Rachel Dunifon for a "Chats in the Stacks" talk about their new book "Research for the Public Good: Applying the Methods of Translational Research to Improve Human Health and Well-Being" (Bronfenbrenner Series on the Ecology of Human Development) (American Psychological Association (APA), May 15, 2012). Helping to bridge the gaps among research, policy, and practice, their book demonstrates how emerging methods of translational research can help us develop programs and policies that improve human health and well-being. This broader, more inclusive approach to translational research has gained popularity and been promoted by the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control, medical centers, and university programs. Elaine Wethington is professor and director of graduate studies in the Department of Human Development at Cornell. She is a specialist in the sociology of mental health, aging, and the life course. Rachel Dunifon is associate professor in the Department of Policy Analysis and Management in the College of Human Ecology, and they are both associate directors in Cornell's Bronfenbrenner Center for Translational Research. Dr. Dunifon's expertise is in the area of child and family policy.

Our quest to understand the origin, evolution and make-up of the Universe has undergone dramatic and surprising advances over the last decades. Much of the progress has been driven by measurements of the cosmic microwave background radiation, the fossil light from the big bang, that provide a glimpse of the Universe as it was 14 billion years ago. By studying tiny variations in the background radiation, cosmologists have been able to test theories of the origin and evolution of the Universe, as well as determine that ordinary matter (the stuff that makes up stars and humans alike) accounts for a mere 4% of the density of the Universe, that the mysterious dark matter accounts for six times that amount, and that a still-elusive and poorly understood "dark energy" is required to make up the remaining 70% of the Universe. After reviewing how we have arrived at such startling conclusions, Professor John Carlstrom of the University of Chicago, focuses on new observations being carried out at the coldest and driest desert on the planet, the high Antarctic plateau, with the 10-meter South Pole Telescope. This event was part of the annual Bethe Lecture Series.

Artist Leo Villareal said he learned that art could be stripped down and be much less than he had previously conceived, during a lecture about creating sculptures from light October 22 in Milstein Auditorium. Villareal also discussed "Cosmos," his new LED installation at the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, installed above the museum's Mallin Sculpture Court. Villareal grew up interested in structure and how things worked. He went on to earn a B.A. from Yale University and a graduate degree at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts in the Interactive Telecommunications Program, where he learned to use then-high-tech graphics programs.
