UNICEF: Delivering aid to flood victims in Zambezi valley

MUTARA, Mozambique, 23 January 2008 -- Approximately 71,000 people remain displaced from their homes by heavy seasonal rains as flood waters continue to rise over the vast Zambezi River Valley. The Mozambique National Institute of Disaster Management has so far reported only seven deaths, however, aid is very much needed for thousands who are currently seeking shelter in resettlement centres. The Mozambican authorities have spearheaded the aid effort, coordinating closely with UN agencies. Search and rescue operations are in full swing in areas like Caia and Mutarara, where the level of the Zambezi River continues to exceed alert levels. Supplies of food, latrines, plastic sheeting and cans have been pre-positioned in warehouses and are being distributed to temporary shelters. Aid is starting to reach more inaccessible areas by truck and boat, where UNICEF is also distributing 15,000 insecticide treated bed nets and water treatment kits. BOMBALI DISTRICT, Sierra Leone, 22 January 2008 – Football star and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador David Beckham recently completed a visit to Sierra Leone, where he travelled with UNICEF representatives to focus attention on the issue of child survival. The trip took place during the lead-up to the release of UNICEF's yearly flagship report – The State of the World's Children 2008. This year’s report cites Sierra Leone as having the highest rate of infant mortality in the world. “In Sierra Leone, one in four children dies before reaching their fifth birthday,” Mr. Beckham said. “It’s shocking and tragic, especially when the solutions are simple. Saving these children’s lives is a top priority for UNICEF – and as an Ambassador, I hope I can help to draw attention to this issue across the world.” To visit the full story, visit: http://www.unicef.org/infobycountry/sierraleone_42633.html

UNICEF: Ghanaian celebs sing of "Clean Water"

ACCRA, Ghana, 10 January 2008 -- To mark World Water Day in March of last year, a song called 'Clean Water' was recorded by two of Ghana's most popular musicians, Rocky Dawuni and Samini. Produced in collaboration with UNICEF, the song drew attention to the plight of people in need of safe drinking water. Now, as people in Ghana continue to recover after devastating floods, Rocky Dawuni and Samini have re-recorded the song into four local languages in an effort to reach people living in more rural, flood-affected areas. Since last August, UNICEF and its partners have been supporting the Government of Ghana's efforts to provide flood-affected families with safe water. However, children still remain at risk of getting sick from diarrhoea or Guinea worm due to improperly filtered or contaminated water. "These local language versions will have bigger impact on people," Mr. Dawuni said in an interview with the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) children's channel. NEW YORK, USA, 15 January 2008 -- The year 2007 marked the five-year anniversary celebration of the UN plan of action, 'A World Fit For Children' -- a commitment by world leaders to protect and promote child rights. It was also in year in which UNICEF further expanded its efforts to empower children and let their voices be heard. In December, 'A World Fit For Children Plus 5' -- the follow-up meeting to the 2002 UN General Assembly Special Session on Children -- gathered together more than 90 youth participants from over 50 countries to act as representatives of their respective governments and non-governmental organizations. Child delegates from many countries got the chance to speak at United Nations headquarters in New York City and attend roundtable events. During the UN meeting, UNICEF asked children to voice their opinions about the world they live in and the work UNICEF is doing, as the organization continues working to get young people involved in identifying their own unique needs. UNICEF: Child delegates reflect on "A World Fit for Children"
[LESS INFO] 2 VIEWS | ADDED 16:58:40 12/21/07
NEW YORK, USA, 13 December 2007 -- This week's landmark United Nations General Assembly plenary ended today with a renewed commitment to meeting the goals laid out five years ago in 'A World Fit for Children', the plan of action from the assembly's first Special Session on Children.
For the second time in UN history, children addressed the General Assembly directly and contributed to discussions covering issues such as climate change, education and HIV/AIDS. Millicent Atieno Orondo, 15, a youth delegate from Kenya, was the closing speaker at today's session.
"This is our final chance to ask you to keep your promises and your final warning that action needs to be taken," Millicent said. "It is no longer a question of what to do and how to do it, but of what is given priority.
"We call on you, all adult decision makers, to renew your commitment towards us and make us the number one priority," she added. "There should be no argument about the interests of the child being the number-one priority."

UNICEF: UNICEF supports rainwater harvesting in Indonesia

ALOR, Indonesia, 14 December 2007 -- The island of Alor is just two short flights away from Bali, and yet it's a world away when it comes to the most basic of life's necessities: clean drinking water.
Climate change experts warn that the problem could get worse. It rains here a mere four months out of the year, and residents often resort to collecting water from local streams. The only alternative had been to buy water from small tanker trucks that travel around the island.
"If it's the dry season we have to walk five kilometres from early morning, and sometimes we don't get home until noon," said Juliana, a homemaker. "I have to bring this 20-litre can. Sometimes it's enough, sometimes it isn't."
In this video, UNICEF's Suzanna Dayne reports on the use of rainwater harvesting to help islanders in Indonesia cope with the lack of water resources.
