UNICEF: Protecting children's rights in Somalia

The Convention on the Rights of the Child was ratified 18 years ago, on 20 November 1989. For this landmark anniversary, UNICEF has launched the 'CRC@18' campaign to raise awareness about child rights and the impact of the Convention. Here is one in a series of related stories.
HARGEISA, Somalia, 29 November 2007 -- The Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) turned 18 last week -- a momentous occasion for children all around the world. It was of particular interest to youths in Somalia, one of only two countries in the world that have not ratified the CRC.
Somalia has been in conflict for the past 16 years and many children in the country have grown up not knowing what it means to have the right to education, clean water or protection.
Despite the lack of an official treaty, UNICEF is still supporting activities in Somalia that pave the way for the realization of children's rights.
At the official level, UNICEF is engaged in advocacy with members of parliament, government ministries and civil society representatives to promote the Convention.
Where children need support on a daily basis, UNICEF works in communities with health workers, teachers, non-governmental organizations, media professionals and children themselves to make child rights a reality.

UNICEF and Google launch One Laptop per Child initiative

NEW YORK, 7 December 2007 -- UNICEF, One Laptop per Child (OLPC) and Google today announced the launch of "Our Stories" ( www.ourstories.org ), a joint initiative to preserve and share the histories and identities of cultures around the world by making personal stories available online in many languages.
Using laptops, mobile phones and other recording devices, children will record, in their native languages, the stories of elders, family members and friends. These stories will be shared globally through the Our Stories website, where they can be found on a Google Map.
By making these stories accessible around the world, the Our Stories project hopes to contribute to a better understanding of our shared humanity across countries and cultures, across religious traditions, across languages, and across generations.
"Information technologies can help young people around the world learn more about each other," said UNICEF Executive Director Ann M. Veneman. "Our Stories will promote dialogue across borders and cultures and give young people a voice on a wide range of issues."
Low-cost XO laptops by One Laptop per Child will serve as a foundation to help build this digital archive of personal stories by providing children in developing countries with easy-to-use technology to record their stories and interviews.
"One Laptop per Child is very excited about partnering with Google and UNICEF to capture the thoughts and feelings of children and their communities around the world," said Walter Bender, President of Software and Content/COO, One Laptop per Child. "The XO laptop is a tool for sharing and collaboration and this project is a great way to build a global community."
The Our Stories website will initially include stories collected by Brazil's Museum of the Person and stories recorded for UNICEF by young people in Ghana, Pakistan, Tanzania and Uganda.

NEW YORK, USA, 11 December 2007 -- The United Nations General Assembly began high-level talks on Tuesday, convening for a commemorative plenary meeting devoted to following up on the outcome of the Special Session on Children held in the same hall five years ago.
Speaking on behalf of the 90 young people who have congregated at UNICEF House in New York this week for a Youth Forum, Longeni Matsai, 14, of Namibia urged participants to listen "not only with your ears but also with your hearts."
UNICEF Executive Director Ann M. Veneman also spoke at the opening of the two-day plenary, noting that in the years since the landmark Special Session -- the first of its kind in UN history -- there has emerged "a global culture that embraces children's rights as central to the advancement of humanity."

UNICEF: Bangladesh cyclone survivors: after the storm

BAGERHAT, Bangladesh, 6 December 2007 -- It was close to noon in Khuriakhali Bazaar, a market in the Sharankhola sub-district of Bagerhat, when the UNICEF team arrived after a long walk.
The surrounding village of Southkhali, razed by Cyclone Sidr last month, wore a ghostly look. One or two corrugated metal houses stood alone amidst heaps of destruction. The villagers struggled to make their way along muddy roads and land eroded from uprooted trees.
Cyclone Sidr, which hit the coastal districts of Bangladesh on 15 November, was one of the worst storms in recent memory. It has claimed at least 3,300 lives, leaving hundreds more missing and thousands homeless.

UNICEF: Education suffers in Gaza

GAZA STRIP, Occupied Palestinian Territory, 12 December 2007 -- Najwa Al Smairi, 11, goes to school just metres from Gaza's heavily guarded perimeter. She is one of the brightest students in her class but it is failure, not violence, that she fears most.
Recently, Najwah has slipped from fourth to fifth in her class, and the studious 11-year-old is concerned. "When I spoke to my sister she told me not to worry, that it was normal but I am still worried," she says.
Palestinians have long traded on excellence in education as an investment in the future, working their way into the upper echelons of governments and businesses throughout the region. Now, increased political tensions and conflict are having devastating effects on the region, where children make up 56 per cent of the population.

UNICEF: Palestinian teens find UNICEF-sponsored community

JABALIA, Occupied Palestinian Territory, 14 August 2007 -- Palestinian adolescents often find themselves with no place to go and nothing to do during the summer school holidays and in their spare time.
The ongoing border closure, coupled with increased poverty, continuously undermines the ability of teens to get a good education and enjoy their time off. The chronic anxiety adolescents are facing on a daily basis undermines their self-esteem and increases their feelings of loss of control over their lives.
To help adolescents overcome stress and hopelessness, and to provide meaningful programmes outside schools, UNICEF is currently supporting 40 adolescent-friendly learning centres in the West Bank and Gaza in cooperation with the Tamer Institute for Community Education and the Ma'an Development Centre.

UNICEF: Children speak out on education and climate change

NEW YORK, USA, 12 December 2007 -- As policy makers and scientists from around the world discuss responses to climate change at a global conference in Bali, Indonesia, young people convening for high-level meetings at UN headquarters in New York added their voices to the debate.
Children often suffer the brunt of natural disasters, disease and malnutrition in poor countries, and rising temperatures are predicted to only worsen the plight of the young, UNICEF warned in a report released today. The launch of the report and the discussions on climate change took place in the context of this week's follow-up meeting on progress toward goals set by the 2002 UN General Assembly Special Session on Children.

To that end, UNICEF supported the launch of a Global Youth Climate Movement by a coalition of more than 30 youth organizations.
The climate change meeting has attracted participants from more than 180 countries -- including environmental experts, activists and world leaders -- in an effort to reach agreement on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and slowing down global warming.

MUYINGA, Burundi, 5 December 2007 -- Chantal Nizigiyimana has been back in her home country of Burundi for only a few months, having lived in Tanzania since she was a young child. In 1993, her family was among hundreds of thousands of Burundians who fled across the border in order to avoid conflict.
Now, all Burundians are being asked to return home. Ms. Nizigiyimana is among approximately 9,000 people -- half of them youths -- who have been expelled from Tanzania just this year. Many women and children arrive at the border with nothing to their name.

The announcement came during the orchestra's Rite of Spring project involving more than 100 schoolchildren from New York City public schools this fall.
The project was part of the Berliner Philharmoniker's 'Zukunft@BPhil' , an educational outreach programme that seeks to make classical music accessible and relevant to the widest audience possible, including the younger generation. The appointment of the orchestra as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador is a recognition of its commitment to empower and inspire children through music.
