AN "AFTER-COLLEGE SPECIAL" by SUPER TUPELO
In 2001 when I worked at Hattleys Garage as a soda jerk (this was up
from position of just being 'jerk') I would notice a beautiful
peroxide blonde on her bicycle as she zipped by every great once in
a while. I began to imagine where she was going and who she was
meeting. Eventually when she came into Hattley's Garage for a coffee
she became Jenny Patton. I found out that she was dating Roy Berry,
the drummer for Lucero (Roy is still the drummer for that very
successful alt-country Memphis band) and now has a private group of
dedicated followers called The Roy Army . Even though I had
pictured Andrew (who worked at Shangri-La Records ) as her paramour,
Roy won out and acted natural - but slightly menacing in that blue
wind-breaker. As usual with any of my past productions my original
vision was being thwarted but I had to rock and roll with it. In
accepting this fate, the movie becomes what it wants to be (and some
people still wonder why I'm a manic in search of a one liner.)
I can't remember why, but I had written this story around Archie
comic worship, Fall colors, and voyeurs. I requested Jenny find a
pink raincoat at a thrift store (and she did on her very first try).
I loaned Jenny ALL my Love and Rockets comics (punk reinterpretations
of Archie Comics) and we hung out. It was a great time working with
director of photography Bowman Kelley as well - and we ate lots of
pizza (see below). This would be a good plot for John Pickle's
natural gifts, I thought - and Emmy Collins just happened to be in
town. As with most of my work, it was another excuse to shoot in my
favorite city of all time (that's Memphis, folks). Jenny went on to
become Super Teenage (to my Super Tupelo) in some very cool Winston
Eggleston fotos .
There was another scene (in an elevator at the University of Memphis)
which tied some confusing story elements together (this edit was
lost). There were also some sound issues. Will O'Loughlin did a
great credit sequence and that somehow was lost therefore the opening
credits in Episode #1 are minimal. I barely managed to get what you
see here ready for Indie Memphis that year. Jenny moved - and I
lost interest considering all the holes in the plot. This was not
typical Guerrilla Monster fare. It was an attempt to show people
that I could do other things that were sweet (perhaps charming) and
not feature nudity.
I got close.
What remains here seems to be four whimsical love stories told as
episodic rock videos. And I should mention EVERYONE donated their
time. Rock and Roll Soundtrack had a zero budget. Marion Arkansas
loaned us their ambulance for FREE. And the hospital that you see in
Chapter 4 is the Baptist Memorial where Elvis was prounounced dead
and Lisa Marie was born. It was imploded on November 6th, 2005.
Something Else: Long ago in Memphis there was Pat's Pizza on Summer
Ave. The recipe of the pizza was kept by the Son of Mr. Pat
and was being hot and freshly served at a NEW location (a thrift
store which you will see in Episode 2 of RRST.
