Ron Dias is the Arts Council for Monterey County's 2007 Lifetime Achievement Champion of the Arts. Ron's career as a Disney artist stated in 1958 when his award winning design for a U.S. postage stamp brought him to national attention. Ron continues to work on Disney projects and is a strong advocate for mentoring young people in the graphic arts. The video draws from Ron's achieves to tell his story. Video by Michael Houston. In Monterey County we partner for the arts. Celebrating Monterey County! is a 10 minute video on the Arts Council for Monterey County's 3rd annual juried yearl-long exhibition at the Monterey County Government Center, 168 West Alisal St, Salinas, CA. This year's exhibit features 31artists from throughout Monterey County. Alisal Center for the Fine Arts' dance troupe Ritmo Latino provided entertainment. Supervisor Ila Mettee-McCutchon welcomed the artists a thanked them for their contribution to art in public places. Lew C. Bauman, the county administrator, noted how important art is in the lives of young people. Arts Council Richard Anderson stressed partnering makes it possible for the Arts Council to make art a greater part of the lives of everyone throughout our region. Artisits shared their inspiration with our viewers. Gema Garcia choreographed Ritmo Latino. Michael Houston of PictureMonterey.org created the video with support for Academy Award winning director John Longenecker's PictureAmerica.org which lets arts nonprofits produce films with high definition equipment.

Center for the Photographic Arts Poetry: In Conversation with Robinson Jeffers This 24 minute video by Picture Monterey.org's Michael Houston records the readings at the Center for Photographic Art on San Carlos near 9th in Carmel on Friday October 24th, 2008. The readings paired with the center's brilliant exhibit by 37 local photographers, Photographs: In Conversation with Robinson Jeffers and Snap! Students Photograph with Jeffers. Kim Weston curated the exhibit which runs until January 4, 2009. The Big Read project focusing on Jeffers poetry has created quite a stir in Monterey County schools, the National Steinbeck Center, the Carl Cherry Center for the Arts, and Jeffers own beloved Tor House. The poetry reading features Brian Taylor, Elliot Ruchowitz-Roberts, and Erika Koss, a special guest from the Big Read project (funded by the National Endowment for the Arts and others). Amy Essick mc'd the event and acted as volunteer coordinator. The Arts Council for Monterey County and the Community Foundation for Monterey County helped sponsor the event. Picture Monterey.org offers local arts groups the use of high definition video production equipment provided by Academy Award winning film director, John Longenecker who has created Picture America.org to give young film makers access to high quality video equipment.

The Arts as Healing Exhibition at the Avery Gallery in the city hall in Seaside, CA in October of 2008 featured fifteen Monterey artists, mostly cancer survivors, who found ways to celebrate their lives and vitality in through art in the face of mortality. The show was curated by Linda Pedrazzini Hevern. The 22 minute video features interviews with artist Cheryl Ellis, Sandra Grey of the Seaside Arts Commission, Linda Pedrazzini Hevern, artists Stefani Esta, Ed Leeper, and Carolyn Berry. Jennifer Allen, Carolyn Berry, Darlene S. Boyd, Kira Carrillo Corser, Suzanne Edminster, Cheryl Ellis, Stafani Esta, Linda Pedrazzini Hevern, Kenji, Emy Ledbetter, Patricia Majio, Branham Rendlen, Jody Royee, Yvonne Simmons, and Pamela Takigawa exhibit in the Arts as Healing Affinity Group. The Arts Council for Monterey County cosponsored the project. World music piper Sean Folsom performed the sound track. Michael Houston made the video. East Salinas Bilingual Puppet Show

"Dolor y Esperanza/Sorrow and Hope" is a Spanish and English musical bilingual puppet show created and performed by the children of CHISPA low income housing in East Salinas. It tells the story of Juan, a typical East Salinas teen who becomes a drug addict after his mother dies. With her supernatural help Juan overcomes his demons. Literally! Juan goes on to produce a bilingual musical puppet show to keep other kids off drugs and out of jail through art. Enjoy it! Kira Carrillo Corser conceived of the project with Arts Council for Monterey County's Professional Artists in the Schools interns Jackie Cruz, vocalist and community organizer, and Miguel Estrada, puppet master and a living cultural treasure. First Night Monterey provided assistance to develop the project and perform it at the National Steinbeck Center and the Greenfield Library. Salinas' Steinbeck library hosted this event as part of California Arts Day and Salinas Arts Day. Marc Cabrera shot the video. Andrew Nack provided the audio. Picture America provided production services. Tito Ortega was stage manager. Michael Houston was director and producer.

Mi Vida/Mi Pueblo Greenfield Library Art

Mi Vida/Mi Pueblo's exhibit of art from rural Greenfield came home from its tour to San Francisco's Mission Cultural Center and Salinas' National Steinbeck Center. Now the project has set its sights on creating a permanent arts center in Greenfield. Two years ago, Martin Macareno of Poder Popular and Kira Carrillo Corser of the Community Foundation for Monterey County's Communities Supporting the Arts put together an arts program in to serve agricultural community of Greenfield in South Monterey County. Martin has since been killed, but the Community Foundation and Poder Popular has expanded the project with the support of the Arts Council for Monterey County, First Night Monterey, and the Monterey Free Libraries. South Monterey County Supervisor Simon Salinas reminds us how important art is in combating violence. Curator/artist, Kira Corser, celebrates with the project's partners. The program also features commentary by Greenfield's Director of Development Paul Mugan; Monterey County Librarian, Jayanti Addleman; Ted Rico, Evelyn Vargas, and Carlos Vega of Poder Popular; Ellen Martin of First Night Monterey. Lincoln Hatch, Maia Carroll, and Paulette Lynch of Arts Council for Monterey County express their the support for the project which hopes to bring Greenfield a permanent art center. Each year the Carl Cherry Center for the Arts and the Monterey Public Library present the Robert Campbell Bilingual High School Poetry Awards. This year over 250 students throughout Monterey County entered the competition to write winning poems in English or Spanish. Jean McCombs of the Monterey Public Library welcomes the participants. Robert Reese and Elliot Ruchowitz-Roberts act as MCs. Barbara Mossberg of California State University Monterey Bay gives the keynote reading. Teachers participating include Jackie Ambrose, Gonzales High School; Dale DePalartis and Barbara Stienberg, Carmel High; Nancy Hunt and Simon Hunt and Gerry Kapolka of Santa Catalina School; Jack Krell of Siver Star Center; Christian Lamonea, Wellington Smith School; Lynn Larsen and Jan Pratt , Pacific Grove High School; Katie Leikam, Boronda Community School; Vournee Nolte and Genievieve Phillips, King City High School; Cheryl Smeltl , North Monterey County High School; Lois Van Buren, North Salinas High School. The program was filmed by Michael Houston and edited by Michael T. Houston of Monterey High. Picture America.org provided production services. Poetry Out Loud Monterey County

Poetry Out Loud has come to Monterey County with the sponsorship of the Arts Council for Monterey County, California Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts. Garland Thomas, Poet Laureate of Pacific Grove and West Coast Slam organizer coordinated the event at the National Steinbeck Center with students from North Salinas and Gonzalez High students taking the gold, silver, and bronze. Next year will be even bigger. Recitation and performance are major new trends in poetry. There has been a recent resurgence of poetry as an oral art form, as seen in the slam poetry movement and the immense popularity of hip-hop music. Video by Michael Houston. Music by Jay Tolagson. Elsie Dill: 2008 Friend Champion of the Arts

Elsie Dill helped create the Salinas Valley Arts Association 35 years ago. It is the only remaining gallery in Salinas. Elsie has been instrumental in bringing artists together with a place to show their work and get additional workshops. She remains a dedicated artist and experimenter. She shares our view that Salinas is ready for a municipal gallery to help give its downtown a another cultural hub. The Arts Council for Monterey County will honor Friend Elsie, Lifetime Achievement cartoonist Gus Arriola, poet Ric Masten, King City music teacher Bruce Graham, photography philanthropists Kim and Gina Weston, professional Todd Kruper, nonprofit Aromas Hills Artisans, and Volunteer Orlando Castro of the Alisal Center for the Fine Arts. Orlando Castro is the the Arts Council of Monterey County 2008 Volunteer Champion of the Arts He will receive his award January 19 at Seaside's Embassy Suites Hotel. Orlando's work brings people in East Salinas free access to graphic arts, music, dance, and drama at the Bread Box. In 2007 the Alisal Center for the Fine Arts stopped roving from school to school and moved into its permanent home on Sanborn Rd. Orlando is a Latin Grammy winner who used his skills as a musician to develop the center's youth Latin folk group Rondilla Alisal to a level to perform with Carlos Santana and Harry Belefonte. Orlando is Alisal Center for the fine Arts unpaid director and a leader in the current arts renaissance in in the Salinas Valley. Other Monterey County 2008 Champions of the Arts are cartoonist Gus Arriola, poet Ric Masten, photo philanthropists Kim and Gina Weston, friend of the Arts Elsie Dill, Professional Todd Kruper, nonprofit Aromas Hills Artisans, and educator Bruce Graham.
