US Warns Against Fake Chinese Airbags

US Warns Against Fake Chinese Airbags
Yet another product from China is raising safety concerns in the US. In a recent test of Chinese made airbags, the devices that are meant to protect travelers either didn't inflate, inflated partially, or blew up. US Transport authority, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, has now issued warnings for these air bags. So far no injury resulting from the fake airbags has been reported. These substandard Chinese-made airbags look just like the real ones, but US consumers can get them at about a quarter of the regular price. The NHTSA warns that if you bought an airbag for less than $400, there is a chance it could be a fake. It also advises that if you bought a used car recently or had your airbag replaced at an auto shop not associated with a dealership, you could be at risk too. Vehicles labeled salvaged, rebuilt, or reconstructed are also suspect, especially if sold within the last three years. Police have arrested a few dealers peddling the fake airbags, but thousands of the knock-offs have already been sold. The US government estimates about 0.1% of US cars have been affected, which is about 240 thousand vehicles. Bo Xilai Moved to Beijing's Luxury Qincheng Prison: The Epoch Times
Disgraced Chinese official Bo Xilai has been moved to a luxury prison in Beijing, according to the Epoch Times Newspaper, citing an internal source. If the information is true, then senior leaders of the Communist regime appear to be a step closer to closing the book on Bo's case. The former Chongqing Party Secretary is facing accusations of abuse of power, covering up his wife's murder of a British businessman, engaging in inappropriate sexual relations and other unspecified crimes. International rights groups have accused Bo of human rights atrocities, including the forced harvesting of organs from prisoners of conscience. The Epoch Times reports Bo was moved to Beijing's Qincheng Prison on October 7th. That's the same place where his wife, Gu Kailai is serving her suspended life sentence. The prison is known for holding senior officials and offering relative luxury and comfort compared to ordinary prisons. Chinese authorities have not announced a date for Bo's impending trial, though many analysts expect it to come before November 8th, when the Communist Party is set to hold its 18th Party Congress and announce a new line-up of leaders. Chinese Authorities "Lose Out" by Tokyo IMF Snub
International Monetary Fund chief Christine Lagarde has criticized a decision by China's communist authorities not to send representatives as planned to the IMF's meeting in Tokyo this week. The move by China comes amidst a tense dispute with Japan over maritime territory, and has been seen as a deliberate snub. Yet, according to Ms. Lagarde, it is only China which will "lose out" as a result of the decision not to attend. Calling the region critical to global economic recovery, she and other world economic officials have called for a defusing of the tensions between East Asia's two great powers. China's economy, too, has recently seen a sharp slowdown. Yet China's foreign minister has just publicly stated the official position that the no-show was "appropriate." Chinese authorities have dispatched lower level representatives in place of the high-level officials who were scheduled to attend. Yet progress in the talks is likely to be impeded by the lack of high-level dialogue. China's Lending Drops
Chinese banks have issued less new loans in September, despite attempts by authorities to loosen up the money market. The People's Bank of China reported on its website today that banks across China lent 623.2 billion yuan, or just under 100 billion dollars last month. That's below the estimated 700 billion yuan target and less than the 703.9 billion lent out in August. The Chinese central bank had cut interest rates in June and July in a bid to boost lending and spending, as the Chinese economy faces a slowdown. But the rising risk of bad loans from local governments over-extending on infrastructure projects has made financial institutions cautious in handing out new loans. The lending data comes ahead of a series of financial indicators to be announced in the 3rd quarter. It's widely expected that the Chinese economy has continued to slow%mdasha difficult situation for the ruling Communist Party as it steers into a new generation of leadership in November. US Rights Report Critical of Human Rights Abuses in China
Coming just days after a judiciary reform whitepaper by Beijing touting legal reforms and human rights improvements, a US report is giving quite the opposite picture. The Congressional-Executive Commission on China issued its annual human rights report on the country this Wednesday. It says the divide between China's ruling elite and the public is worsening and human rights are continually abused. The report cited unprecedented protests last year as a sign that the Chinese regime continues to ignore the 'rule of law' over stability and preservation of the status quo. The Committee, co-chaired by Representatives Chris Smith and Sherrod Brown, said the public had a, quote "visible frustration" and "well-founded impatience" with Beijing's lack of respect for basic human rights. Zhao Changqing, a Chinese rights activist agrees. [Zhao Changqing, Shaanxi Democracy and Human Rights Activists]: "So many people and netizens have no hope for the ruling party to reform. Therefore, some people call for a revolution in their hearts. It seems like they wish to see a significant event happen to make great chaos in the world." Wednesday's report outlines the poor treatment of ethnic minorities like Tibetans and Uighurs. It also discussed the repression of religious groups including Catholics, Muslims and practitioners of the Falun Gong spiritual practice. The Committee also raised concerns over the abuse of human rights lawyers, including Gao Zhisheng, who had written about the severe ... Next 36-48 Hours Critical for Girl Shot by Taliban
Doctors are satisfied with the condition of the 14-year-old girl who was shot by the Taliban but the next 36 to 48 hours are critical. Full script: Doctors treating a 14-year-old Pakistani girl who was shot by the Taliban are now satisfied with her condition, according to Pakistan's military. However, the next 36 to 48 hours remain critical. [Asim Saleem Bajwa, Military Spokesman Major-General]: "There's a panel of doctors which was formed to review her condition, and oversee the treatment. That panel of doctors travelled with her in a special military helicopter which shifted her here last night. The shifting, which by itself is a very arduous task, was completed successfully and the fresh investigation was done on her." Malala Yousufzai was transferred on Thursday to a hospital in the army garrison town of Rawalpindi. She is unconscious and in a critical condition after gunmen shot her in the head and neck as she left school on Tuesday. Doctors say she has moved her arms and legs slightly since the incident. A Taliban spokesman said that the girl was targeted for trying to spread Western culture and that they would try to kill her again if she survived. Staff at Ganga Ram Hospital, one of the oldest hospitals in Lahore, gathered to pray for Malala. Syrian Refugees Unable To Call Home
Syrian refugees in Jordan are unable to call their families because of power shortages. Full Story: Syrian refugees in Jordan's Zaatari refugee camp are facing a severe shortage of power supply for their mobile phones. Zaatari refugee camp was opened this July in Jordan to host the Syrians fleeing the violence that erupted in the country from 2011. So far, the camp has housed 35000 refugees. The refugees are not allowed to leave the camp unless given special permissions. Cellphone calls are their only way to get in touch with their families back in Syria. But there is only one place in the camp to recharge cellphone batteries. The recharging spot is located in the office of a charity organization. Several power strips are laid out - but these sockets are far from enough for over 30000 refugees. [Kamal, Refugee Waiting in Queue]: "There are about 10000 cellphones in this camp, with only five power sockets available. How can that be enough? We probably won't get our turns even after a whole day of waiting." Those who are lucky enough to recharge their phones may still be unable to speak to their families, due to damaged communication facilities in Syria. Miami Heat Beats Clippers in Beijing
The sixth National Basketball Association (NBA) China Games lit up the MasterCard Center in Beijing as the resurgent Los Angeles Clippers took on the reigning champions Miami Heat on Thursday night. At the end of a pulsating game, Heat trumped the Los Angeles Clippers 94-80 thanks to superstar LeBron James, who scored 20 points, five rebounds, five assists and one steal. The sell-out crowd of 18000 was on its feet as soon as the Heat pre-game took to the court with James and All-Star Dwyane Wade waving to fans. The pair was in the same arena where they won the 2008 Olympic gold medal for Team USA. [Spectator]: "It's exciting when watching the (NBA) games on television usually, but it is more thrilling when watching it live. I do not watch basketball very often, but I'm really excited after watching it today." [Spectator]: "There should be more seats available to make more people have the chance to share the game with us," said a fan at the center. The Heat went to work from the start, with the first three-point shot coming from Shane Battier, a former teammate of Chinese superstar Yao Ming. And James delighted the crowd with a spectacle of dunks and jumps to put Heat in the lead with 29-18 at the end of the first quarter. The Clippers closed the gap to 60-47 by the third quarter following six straight points scored by explosive power forward Blake Griffin midway through the quarter. However, a swift answer of two three-pointers by Miami's newly acquired Ray Allen doused ... From: NTDTV Views: 122 7 ratings Time: 00:51 More in News & Politics

China and Japan Ready to Talk over Islands Dispute
A senior Chinese official met with his Japanese counterpart on Thursday (Oct. 11) to discuss the rising tensions between their countries over the East China Sea. The head of the Chinese Foreign Ministry's Asian Affairs Department, Luo Zhaohui flew to Japan for a secret meeting with the director general of the Asian and Oceanic Affairs Bureau at the Japanese Foreign Ministry. The two were laying a foundation for future talks at the higher levels of government. China and Japan have agreed to sit down and discuss their territorial dispute over the Diaoyu Islands, or Senkaku Islands as they're known in Japan. It comes a day after Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda said both countries would suffer if they didn't meet at the bargaining table. Japan's Foreign Ministry says discussions will be held at the vice-ministerial level, but no date has been set. Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Osamu Fujimura elaborated on the situation to reporters, saying (quote), "It is important for Japan and China to take a broad view and start by communicating with the aim of improving relations, including at the planned vice-ministerial meeting, where I expect a frank exchange of views." The islands, situated in waters rich in natural gas deposits, and a haven for fishing, have been administered by Japan since 1895, but China has declared them "sacred territory," and Taiwan also claims sovereignty over them. Both China and Japan have patrol boats in the area, and there are concerns that an ... From: NTDTV Views: 98 2 ratings Time: 01:32 More in News & Politics

The European Union is awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for six decades of work in advancing peace in Europe. Full script: The European Union has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for its long-term role in uniting the continent. The Norwegian Nobel Committee made the announcement on Friday. [Thorbjoern Jagland, Nobel Peace Prize Committee Chairman]: "Ladies and gentlemen, good morning. The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2012 is to be awarded to the European Union. The Union and its forerunners have for over six decades contributed to the advancement of peace and reconciliation, democracy and human rights in Europe." European Council President Herman Van Rompuy is proud of the European Union's peacekeeping efforts. And German Chancellor Angela Merkel has called it "a wonderful decision", both an inspiration and a duty. Reconciliation between Germany and France was a major part of the announcement. [Thorbjoern Jagland, Nobel Peace Prize Committee Chairman]: "The dreadful suffering in World War Two demonstrated the need for a new Europe. Over a seventy-year period, Germany and France had fought three wars. Today war between Germany and France is unthinkable." But reactions were mixed elsewhere in Europe. Eurosceptics in Britain have heaped scorn on the decision, arguing that the drive for further European integration is actually causing people greater poverty and hardship.
