No Cheering Public For China's Leadership Change
Crowds filled New York's Time Square as the American public voted for their next president. Half a world away in China, a leadership change is also about to take place, but the streets of Beijing will not be filling up with cheering crowds. Instead, police and other security personnel are on high alert. They've been instructed to make sure the 18th Party Congress, which starts on Thursday, happens without a glitch. In Tiananmen Square police check bags and identity cards before allowing people to pass. Activists and rights groups say security is tight behind the scenes as well. Speaking from Lhasa a prominent Tibetan blogger, writer and activist spoke to reporters via Skype [Woeser, Tibetan Poet, Activist and Blogger]: "From my personal experience, it has never been this bad before. Not only did they make me leave Beijing, not allow me to stay in Beijing, but once I arrived back in my hometown, all my family and friends have been cautioned. This has never happened before." Rights group Amnesty international says at least 130 people have been detained or placed under restriction since September. Many petitioners who flock to the capital seeking redress for abuses in their home provinces found themselves overrun by plain-clothed security men. They were being forced out of Beijing from as early as September. [Luo Yingshu, Petitioner from Chongqing City]: "Why are they capturing petitioners for the 18th Party Congress? Because petitioners want to complain to the authorities ... From: NTDTV Views: 12 1 ratings Time: 02:22 More in News & Politics

Nissan Yearly Forecasts Down 20% as China Sales Plunge
The East China Sea islands dispute continues to hit Japanese companies trading in China hard. On Tuesday, carmaker Nissan downgraded its profit forecast by US$1 billion to US$3.99 billion. Nissan says the territorial dispute and the ensuing anti-Japanese sentiment were the primary reasons for the downgrade. Nissan's Chief Operating Officer Toshiyuki Shiga reported on Tuesday a huge fall in sales in China due to the current political situation. Shiga said that the company expects to sell 175000 fewer vehicles through March in China compared to earlier estimates. Toyota, Honda and Nissan, Japan's three largest automakers, have all announced lower actual and forecast sales in China due to the territorial dispute. But Nissan has the greatest exposure to the Chinese market, making over one-quarter of its sales there. [Toshiyuki Shiga, Nissan's Chief Operating Officer] "Despite the recent political tension between Japan and China, the Chinese market is unchangingly important for us." Globally, Nissan has actually seen an 8% increase in profit for the quarter and stronger sales for the year. However, these increases are not enough to cover the losses in China. While the current forecast is gloomy, Shiga sees signs of turnaround. [Toshiyuki Shiga, Nissan's Chief Operating Officer] "We are gradually seeing signs of recovery in China. Customers are gradually coming back to dealerships." At the end of Tokyo trading on Tuesday, Nissan shares closed 2 percent down. For more news and ... It was either we weren't going to have health care and not care about women. They wanted small government but then they wanted government that interfered with your personal life which was crazy." One young Obama supporter says the election party is a night he will never forget. [Peter Resendez, Obama Supporter]: "When he came out was nice but when he came back on stage and it was everybody. The vice president, members of his cabinet and such. And then he had a moment when everybody was off the stage and he came back out and I saw tears in his eyes and it gave me goose bumps and it made feel proud and connected." World Reacts To Obama Victory
Reactions to Obama's victory from Britain, France, India and Tibet. Full Story: The US presidential election was closely watched around the world. In London, people hurrying to work were generally supportive of Barack Obama, but cautious as to the road ahead. [Daniel Sinott]: "Very pleased that Obama won. Britain enjoys a close relationship with the US, and some believe four more years of Obama will provide the stability, to help steer through tough economic times. [Julia Luff]: "Stability is helpful. More Than One Million Living in Poverty in Hong Kong
Hong Kong can lay claim to some of the most expensive properties in the world. Very expensive apartments are scattered along Victoria Harbour's coastline. Many have private swimming pools. But the poorest residents in Hong Kong are living in abject poverty. Fifty-year old Yu Wai-chan is one of thirty people living in an illegally modified flat inside an industrial building in the heart of Tai Kok Tsui industrial district. His room, or "bed home " as they are called, is made of boards, has no window, and can only fit a single bed and TV. He works part-time doing renovations, and pays $180 a month for his tiny 35 square foot room. [Yu Wai-Chan,Flat Resident]: "Under normal circumstances, this is not fit for humans to live. I mean, usually this is not a suitable place for normal people to live. But some people, like myself, live here only because the rent is cheap." Next door live Huang Shaochang and his wife, who pay a similar amount for the same size room, but both have to squeeze into the tiny room. [Huang Shaochang, Flat Resident]: "I'm worried about fire accidents. Although this has not happened, I try to be careful and I worry about it. The hygienic conditions here are bad. Rats and fleas roam around." About 100 thousand people live in subdivided units, bed homes and cage homes in Hong Kong. [Sze Lai-Shan,Community Organizer]: "The rent is becoming really expensive. Before, one bedspace may be less than 100 HK dollars ($12.9 USD), for many years ago, but now it costs ... From: NTDTV Views: 57 6 ratings Time: 02:26 More in News & Politics

Wen Jiabao Attends ASEM Summit in Laos
Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has left behind the political power struggles of the Communist Party this week, attending a summit of Asian and European leaders in Vientiane, Laos. Wen, who will soon step down as Chinese premier, called for close cooperation on energy security at the Asia-Europe Meeting on Tuesday. He also urged the countries to work together on disaster prevention and mitigation. On Monday, Wen met with several European leaders, including French President Francois Hollande, Italian Prime Minster Mario Monti and Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev. The separate meetings focused mainly on bi-lateral trade and financial relations. Wen's line of up meetings left out Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda. China and Japan have been locked in a heated sovereignty dispute over islands in the East China Sea. The Chinese regime is also engaged in other maritime rows with its neighbors in the South China Sea. While the main focus of the ASEM summit remained on the Eurozone crisis, leaders agreed on the Vientiane Declaration to use peaceful means to settle any territorial disputes. ASEM was established 17 years ago. This week's summit included leaders from 49 countries. China News Broadcast, November 6, 2012: Xi Jinping Proposing Limited Democracy
In today's NTD China New, Chinese premier Wen Jiabao is in Laos for the Asia-Europe Meeting. Reuters reports that Chinese leader Hu Jintao and his successor Xi Jinping are proposing an election for the Communist Party's Politburo, but the proposed reform is far from any form of real democracy. A women's rights activist, Mao Hengfeng, has been sentenced to 18 months in labor camp. Rights group Amnesty International says Chinese authorities are trying to silence dissidents ahead of the 18th Party Congress. A diplomatic row has erupted between the Chinese regime and Israel, after Israeli lawmakers expressed support for a petition urging for a UN probe into forced organ harvesting by Chinese state-run hospitals. A US Congressional Committee calls the Chinese regime a major cyber security threat, Bloomberg has reported. The Chinese regime is planning a new scheme to introduce more yuan investments into the country. A million Hong Kong residents are living in poverty, many forced to live in ultra-small subdivided spaces. Victory for President Obama

Victory for President Obama
President Barack Obama takes almost all swing states to win a decisive victory. Full story: It was billed as the tightest election since 2000 when George W. Bush won the swing state of Florida by just 500 votes. But well before midnight all the major US TV networks were predicting victory for Obama, as projections saw the president sail past the required Electoral College votes of 270. There were scenes of joy and celebration in his hometown of Chicago. With unemployment as 8%, Obama becomes the first US president since Franklin Roosevelt to be reelected with such high jobless numbers. So how has Barack Obama done it? Many now point to the bankruptcy of the Republican brand. In many ways, this was their election to lose. They have retreated deeper into a narrow Christian rightwing ideology that is no longer nationally representative. Romney himself never managed to quite shake off the image of a multi-millionaire businessman serving the needs of the country'e elite. One poll went as far as to show his black supporters at a staggering 0%. President Barack Obama now has a further 4 years to fulfill the high expectations that greeted his first term in office. The world, as well as the US, have been closely watching this election, and hope he will do a great job. World Community Watches US Elections
In different countries around the world people have their eye on the US elections. From Kenya to Russia to Cuba to Japan, many countries have shown a preference for Obama. Full story: While the US elections are naturally a hot topic in the US, they are also being discussed around the world. Here's a look at some opinions in other countries on the US presidential candidates. In Russian, the attitude towards Obama has been more favorable than Romney due to Romney's aggressive stance towards Russia. [Nikolai Svanidze, Political Commentator, Russian TV]: "Romney allowed himself rather sharp criticism of Russia. With Obama there was indeed some improvement in the relationship. He has a reputation of a rather reasonable political figure, at least in international field. That's why Vladimir Putin and the Russian leadership in general have reasons, or illusions, to believe that they would be better off with Obama than with Romney." In the communist island nation across from the US, Cuban citizens are watching the election closely. Many see Obama as the better candidate in terms of easing travel restrictions to and from the States. [Luisa Hernandez, Cuban Citizen Applying for Travel Visa]: "I hope Obama comes out on top because he's the one who will leave the immigration law and everything [relations] how they are. Because if the other [Mitt Romney] wins they say he won't let Cubans go there [to the United States]. What we want is to be able to come and go to the United States to ... Cyclist David George Tests Positive for EPO
David George, a former teammate of Lance Armstrong, admits to taking the performance-enhancing drug EPO. He is suspended by his team while investigation is being done. Full story: South African cyclist David George announced on Tuesday that he has tested positive for the banned hormone EPO (Erythropoietin). George had returned a positive sample after an out-of-competition test conducted by the South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS) in August. He said: "I fully understand the consequences of my admission and will bear the results of this." "I would like to apologize to my sponsors, who have given me every opportunity to chase a dream, and team mates, for whom I have the utmost respect. I will endeavor to make right where humanly possible." The hormone EPO increases the red blood-cell count, enabling users to increase their oxygen-carrying capacity and enhance performance. George has been suspended by his Team 360Life. Cycling South Africa (CSA) said: "(We) respect the independence of the SAIDS process and will respect the outcome." George rode alongside Armstrong in the 1999 and 2000 seasons when the American won the Tour de France as part of the US Postal Service team. Obama's Kenyan Grandmother: "I Wish Him Victory"
In the small Kenyan village of Kogelo, Sarah Obama told a news conference on Tuesday (November 6) she wished her grandson victory so that he could continue working for American people. [Sarah Obama, Barack Obama's Grandmother]: "I'm grateful that the elections are here again and I wish him victory in the elections and that he will work well with the people of America." In 2008, thousands celebrated in Kenya when Barack Obama, whose father was from Kogelo, became the first African-American to be elected president of the United States. After a long and bitter 2012 campaign, polls show President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney neck-and-neck in an election that will be decided in a handful of states. Sarah Obama said she was confident of her grandson's victory. [Sarah Obama, Barack Obama's Grandmother]: "I appreciate it is a tough race but I pray to God that he emerges victorious. I am actually confident that he will win because he has worked really hard for it." Paris' famous department store Galerie Lafayette gets an elephant dressed in Louis Vuitton to push the button on its animal-themed Christmas displays. What are penguins wearing sunglasses, a polar bear holding a designer handbag and Cinderella with her magic carriage doing in Paris at this time of year? They're not exactly Christmas shopping, but for the department store Galeries Lafayette, it's a new twist on how to turn on seasonal sparkle An elephant dressed in a Louis Vuitton drape clumsily pushed the button to turn on the lights on the facade of the famous retailers, as onlookers cheered. Wacky and whimsical animal models replaced the usual mannequins which sport the latest seasonal trends. Passers-by stopped to admire the decorations. "I really find it very pretty," said one little girl. And this fancy Christmas tree adds a traditional element to this unusual Christmas shopping scene.
