Chinese Residents React To Toyota Recall
Japan's Toyota Motor Corp announced on Wednesday its decision to recall 7.43 million vehicles world-wide. The recalled vehicles will undergo a short repair, to address a malfunctioning power window switch that could become a potential fire hazard. This is the largest voluntary recall for Toyota since a total of 8 million cars were recalled in 1998.Between 2009 and 2011, a further 10 million vehicles were recalled to address other post-manufacturing malfunctions. In the first half of 2012 Toyota regained its position as the best-selling automaker in the world. But sales in China have recently plummeted due to the territorial dispute between China and Japan. China is the world's largest car market, and accounts for about 12 percent of Toyota's total yearly sales. On Tuesday Toyota announced that its China sales for September had fallen a staggering 48.9 percent. But despite the recent political backdrop, these Beijing residents believe that the Toyota recall will not harm its reputation. [Ms Liu, Beijing Resident]: "I think I'm a little worried, but if they adopt this kind of attitude in taking responsibility for vast numbers of cars, then I'm quite satisfied. If this attracts customers, then I'd consider it." [Mr Liu, Beijing Resident]: "I'm not too worried about this. For sales this will probably have a good effect." No accidents, injuries or deaths have been reported as a result of the problem, but Toyota say there is a possibility the malfunctioning switches could emit ... "Innocence of Muslims" Man Denies Charges
The man linked to anti-islamist film "Innocence of Muslims" denied that he violated probation charges. Full story: A California man linked to an anti-Islam film denies he had violated his probation. He had been convicted of bank fraud and was on probation when he was accused of making a defamatory video of the Prophet Mohamed. The man is publicly known as Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, but appeared in court under the name Mark Basseley Youssef. He was born in Egypt but now lives in California. He denied in court he was guilty of the charges, which included lying to officials and using aliases. Youssef was barred from using aliases while on probaiton, as well as accessing the Internet. The man was attributed to a crudely made 13-minute video that circulated online under several titles, including "Innocence of Muslims." The film sparked a torrent of anti-American unrest in Arab and Muslim countries for portraying the Prophet Mohammad as a fool and sexual deviant. US authorities said they were not investigating the film itself, but prosecutors said the man could be sent back to prison if he did violate probation rules. His lawyer said at a press interview that his client is not responsible for the violence the video caused. [Steven Seiden, Lawyer of Mark B. Youssef]: "My client was not responsible for the violence in the Middle East. Clearly it was pre-planned and that was just an excuse and a trigger point to have more violence. CCP Missed Chances to Settle Diaoyu Islands Dispute: HK Journalist
The territorial dispute between China and Japan over the Diaoyu Islands shows no sign of cooling. After weeks of strong rhetoric and sometimes violent rioting, some observers have wondered why the Chinese regime has suddenly turned up the dial on the subject %mdashespecially when it had opportunities to resolve the dispute before. Veteran Hong Kong journalist Ching Cheong was amongst the first to advocate Chinese ownership of the Diaoyu Islands. He recently published an article criticizing the Communist regime for passing up four chances to settle the ownership dispute with Japan. In 1971, when the United States handed over authority over the Ryuku Islands back to Japan, it included the Diaoyu Islands as well. Ching wrote that while the Chinese regime disputed that handover, it stopped short of engaging diplomatic channels to challenge it. A year later, the Chinese regime resumed diplomatic ties with Japan. It declined Japan's offer to pay war crimes compensation, and left the ownership issue of Diaoyu Islands aside. In 1978, as the two sides concluded a peace treaty, the then Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping told visiting Japanese Foreign Minister Sunao Sonada that the Diaoyu Islands issue can be left for the next generation. Then, in 1996, after a Hong Kong activist drowned in the waters of the Islands, Ching claimed Japanese authorities indicated they were open to discussing the ownership issues with the Chinese regime. Again, Ching said, Beijing passed up the opportunity ... From: NTDTV Views: 37 5 ratings Time: 02:23 More in News & Politics

China Announces Organ Donation System Amid Forced Harvesting Allegations
China's Ministry of Health announced on Wednesday plans to set up a national organ donation system. The proposal comes amid increasing international attention on illegal organ harvesting under the communist regime. State-run media reports the system will include a database of waiting lists and organs available from a network of a 164 qualified hospitals. A kidney specialist and assistant professor at Yale University School of Medicine, Dr. Jianchao Xu says the new proposal looks good on paper, but he doubts it will work. [Dr. Xu Jianchao, Renal Doctor, Yale University] "There have been a lot of international discussions about China's inadequate organ transplant system. So it's attempting to improve. But as to whether this can be carried out, it's hard to say. Because nothing is transparent inside China, these transplant centers are very self-focused, and often do not like to share organs with others, so they may not follow the rules." Culturally Chinese people have an aversion to organ donation, and the number of voluntary donors has been historically very low. Chinese authorities have long admitted to using executed prisoners as a source of organs. Rights groups say this practice extends beyond executed prisoners, and that prisoners of conscience are being killed for their organs. Last week, 106 US Congress members urged the State Department to reveal any information it may have on these allegations, particularly whether practitioners of the persecuted Falun Gong ... Mo Yan's Nobel Prize Receives Mixed Reactions
[Peter Englund, Permanent Secretary of Swedish Academy]: (English, male) "The Nobel Prize in literature for 2012 is awarded to the Chinese writer Mo Yan who with hallucinatory realism merges folk tales, history and the contemporary. Thank you." Guan Moye, who goes by the pen name Mo Yan, is the first Chinese citizen to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature since 1901. The work that won him the award is titled "Frog". It deals with the controversy over China's one child policy and the Chinese cultural preference for boys. There have been mixed reactions to Mo's award, who's pen name literally translates to "Don't Speak." China's state-run media has wildly welcomed the prize. Mo is a Communist Party member, and was once in the People's Liberation Army. This official reaction is drastically different to the last time a Chinese native won the Nobel Literature prize back in 2000. was living in France at the time, and his work was critical of the Communist Party. Fellow Chinese writers have been less enthusiastic about the award. Some are unhappy his success is a result of withholding criticism of the Communist Party. [Wen Yunchao, Blogger and Journalist]: "The two words 'Mo Yan' mean 'do not speak,' and they are a very real portrayal of the current political situation in China. With Mo Yan winning of the prize, people in China will get the message that you can become an accomplice of an authoritarian government. Lance Armstrong Doping Accusations -- French Public Unsurprised
Fresh accusations that seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong was a doping ringleader come as no surprise on the streets of Paris. If the United States Anti-Doping Agency is right, then Armstrong cheated his way to the top of the cycling world through the most elaborate doping scheme ever seen in the sport. People on the streets of the French capital offer their opinion. [Laurent Bodin, Parisian] "German television is no longer showing the Tour de France today and that's because they had had enough, having to spend more time reporting each year about doping than about victories so I think that the Tour de France's image has been damaged for the past 15 or 20 years." [Atle Kold-Hansen, Norwegian Tourist] "I think it is a pity because it is a nice sport, I've been following it every summer more or less, but it's a shame, it's a pity." [Felix, Parisian] "I think that cycling is very very difficult and I think that without doping they (the cyclists) wouldn't achieve anything." The information released by the United States Anti-Doping Agency on Wednesday is the most comprehensive yet. It includes the sworn testimony of 11 former teammates of Armstrong, as well as financial payments, emails and laboratory tests. Armstrong is accused not only of doping, but also of being the ringleader who ordered his teammates to cheat. US Sets Final Anti-Dumping Duties on Chinese Solar Panels
To combat the dumping of Chinese solar panels, the US has set heavy duties on billions of dollars worth of solar panel imports from the Mainland. China's solar industry is heavily subsidized by the Chinese government, creating an oversupply of panels, and dumping at much lower rates. The Commerce Department says Chinese companies were dumping solar cells and panels at prices 18 to 250 percent below market price. The imposed duties could range from 30 to 250 percent depending on the company and the government subsidy they receive. The Commerce Department also set countervailing duty rates ranging about 15 to 16 percent to compensate for the subsidies. The imposing of anti-dumping duties is currently limited to panels made of Chinese solar cells, and excludes panels made of non-Chinese solar cells. China has warned the US stance could damage US-China trade relations and slower the development of solar energy sector. Miami Heat vs. Los Angeles Clippers Clash in Beijing
NBA teams Miami Heat and Los Angeles Clippers held training sessions in Beijing on Wednesday before their pre-season clash. The teams arrived in China earlier this week, where they will play each other twice during the NBA China Games in Beijing today and Shanghai on Sunday. Among the faces playing for the Clippers in the preseason matches are all-star guard Chris Paul and forward Blake Griffin, who had just recently recovered from knee surgery in July. Griffin said the trip to China has helped in the Clipper's team building. [Blake Griffin, LA Clippers Forward]: "I think it's great. I think having all of last year and some time this summer to work out together - you know, we were at the USA for a little bit together, till I got hurt, so it was great to be able to have that chemistry built-up and now we're going into this full training camp, it's been great." Coach Erik Spoelstra says they're optimistic about how their team will go, with the recent acquisition of big names in the sport. [Erik Spoelstra, Miami Heat Coach]: "This month of October will answer a lot of those questions. But everybody that joins our team understands that the most important word is sacrifice, and so a lot of times the role may be different than what it was for these guys, on other teams and other years. So we feel that we have great depth, versatility with our team. We plan on using it, and it requires the guys' sacrifice to be able to do that." The two games will be held at the MasterCard ... Syrian Refugees Cross River into Turkey
Many Syrian families fled the border town of Azmarin into Turkey on Thursday in an attempt to escape the violence of the area. Turkish residents of Hacipasa, which lies across a narrow river that marks the Turkey-Syria border, helped people using small metal boats. Clashes between the Syrian army and rebels have intensified along the border recently. Mortars landed outside of Azmarin and machinegun fire could be heard from the Turkish side. The military presence in Turkey has also increased greatly along the border in the past week in response to mortar shelling that has come from northern Syria. It is unclear if those shells were purposeful strikes or overshot rounds. However, Turkey has retaliated using air strikes, and NATO has expressed its support for its fellow member state. There are 100000 refugees from Syria in Turkey. Amnesty Slams Taliban Shooting
Malala Yousufzai is rushed to hospital on Tuesday, her young life in the hands of these paramedics. The 14-year-old Pakistani girl was shot and seriously wounded as she was leaving her school in Pakistan's Swat Valley. The Taliban claimed responsibility -- citing Malala's promotion of education for girls as the reason behind the attack. The shooting has been met with shock and outrage, both within Pakistan and abroad. Speaking in Hong Kong, an Amnesty International official strongly condemned the violence. [Catherine Baber, Amnesty International Asia Pacific Director] "Well the shooting of Malala is a shocking act of violence that Amnesty International condemns in the strongest possible terms. We understand she is doing well in hospital after an operation to remove the bullet." Yousufzai rose to prominence for speaking out against the Pakistani Taliban at a time when even the government seemed to be appeasing the hardline Islamists. She's a recipient of Pakistan's highest civilian award, and has been nominated for numerous international awards for child activists. The Taliban are opposed to girls' education, and have long attacked and forced the closure of schools that enroll female students. Chinese Government Debt Driving up Forced Eviction: Amnesty International
Forced evictions in China have risen significantly in the past two years, Amnesty International said on Thursday. The group says it's because local officials and property developers colluded to seize and sell land to pay off government debt. China's communist regime claims ownership of all the land in the country. In theory, forced eviction is illegal and authorities are meant to compensate those who are displaced. But violent scenes are common as people are thrown out of their homes, and this has led to escalating social unrest. Amnesty says residents face death or imprisonment if they retaliate. Some feel helpless to the extent that they resort to self-immolation. [Nicola Duckworth, Senior Director of Research, Amnesty International]: "... Potentially, millions of people in the country are at risk of these illegal forced evictions and indeed protests about forced evictions are the single biggest issue of populist discontent in the country. So it's a huge issue, it's been going on for many, many years, we feel it's rising in scale now and it's really time to put an end to it." According to Amnesty International, the main driver behind forced eviction is the Chinese regime's economic policy. In 2008, after the global financial crisis, Beijing's central authorities set infrastructure building targets for local governments. They then turned to taking out large loans to raise the capital needed to meet the targets. [Nicola Duckworth, Senior Director of Research, Amnesty ... Naquatica: Bosnia Pyramid Carbon Dated 25 Thousand Years Old
What can we say we really know about history? Well, it seams not a lot. What we think we know is constantly changing in light of new discoveries. A recent carbon dating performed on a pyramid in Bosnia, proves it to be at least 25 thousand years old. Most scientists and historians however believe that human civilization started about 5000 years ago with the Sumerians and Babylonians. That is, until artifacts were found, which predate them. These discoveries suggest, that there was a pre-historical civilization around the world- one that must have been highly advanced. Two Italian archaeologists, Dr. Ricarrdo Brett and Niccolo Bisconti found a piece of organic material on the Bosnian Pyramid. They were able to carbon-date the material and with it the pyramid itself. This carbon dating puts the pyramid 20 thousand years before the Sumerian and Babylonian "civilizations." When the Bosnian Pyramid was first discovered in 2005, researchers could only measure the age of the topsoil covering the pyramid, which is about 12 thousand years old. [Dr. Semir Osmanagich, Researcher of Bosnian Pyramid]: "The organic materials found on the Sun Pyramid and biological analysis are telling us that the pyramids are older than 12 thousand five hundred years. The oldest on the planet." You may be wondering how such a huge pyramid could have remained undiscovered in Europe for so many years. Until its discovery it was just known as Visoko hill. That's right, they thought it was a hill, which is ... From: NTDTV Views: 264 22 ratings Time: 02:34 More in News & Politics
