No Fracking Way (part one)
[LESS INFO] 12 VIEWS | ADDED 15:40:16 12/07/09
According to Brad Gill, Executive Director, Independent Oil and Gas Association of New York... "natural gas is a clean, abundant and affordable fuel. Increasing production here in New York will help improve our economy, increase tax revenues and jobs, and bring our nation closer to energy independence."
"When you think about 1.3 million wells across the nation [that] have been fracked, [with] about 900,000 producing today, you can name several incidents that aren't true contamination but [simply] methane-charged water."
But what do the people who are drinking methane-charged water have to say?
"I wish that they had never come, obviously. We had peace and tranquility before... and it's just been an absolute living hell."
Resident of Dimock, Pennsylvania
Since 2008, over 4,000 gas wells have been drilled in Pennsylvania. Farmers in southwestern PA blame cattle deaths and mutations on local hydraulic fracturing. Other community complaints include tainted water, children getting sick, skin rashes, and neurological disorders.
"For the rest of my life I'm going to be living in fear of having that well there."
Resident of Dimock, Pennsylvania
Natural gas drilling in the Marcellus Shale in Dimock has released methane into the water supply, drinking water wells have exploded, and others were found to contain so much gas that one homeowner was told to open a window if he planned to take a bath.
"There has to be hope, because this is too crazy to let happen."
Resident of Dimock, Pennsylvania
In three (3) separate spills at the Heitsman well in a rural area just south of Montrose, PA about 8,000 gallons of a carcinogenic chemical -- used to ease resistance in gas well production -- polluted a wetland and caused a fish kill in Stevens Creek. The chemical, LGC-35 CBM, is manufactured by Halliburton. It dissolves in water (making cleanup extremely difficult), has led to skin cancer in animals and "may cause headache, dizziness and other central nervous system effects" to anyone who breathes or swallows it according to the Material Safety Data Sheets for LGC-35 CBM.
For slick water, high-volume hydrofracking, it is estimated that with each fracking, 2 to 9 million gallons of fresh water are used. About half of the frac fluid remains in the ground, while the other 1,000,000 to 4,000,000 gallons comes back up out of the well along with thousands of gallons of toxic chemicals and radioactive matter known as "produced water."
The United States Department of Energy considers the waste water from hydraulic fracturing to be one of the most toxic industrial byproducts of the gas and oil industry.
WE CAN IMPROVE OUR ECONOMY, INCREASE TAX REVENUES, AND CREATE JOBS WITH ABUNDANT, AFFORDABLE, CLEAN RENEWABLE ENERGY
Hey Brad Gill... that's TRUE ENERGY INDEPENDENCE!

Green Guerrillas Eco Cinema 2009... HDelicious!
[LESS INFO] 1 VIEWS | ADDED 22:27:20 09/19/09
Some studies suggest that over the course of our lives "most people spend only 4% - 5% of their time outdoors." Yikes! So just in case this sad statistic applies to us (what exactly?)... Green Guerrillas Youth Media Tech Collective defied these odds during Summer 2009 by engaging with our local landscape to improve our cinematography skills.
We are equipping ourselves to film and photograph our next project... so, in the spirit of self-determination, liberation, and celebration of the natural world, Green Guerrillas started year #4 zooming in on the ducks and wild berries near Six Mile Creek; playing Eagle Eye in a wild flower preserve to re-awaken our overall sense of awareness too often dampened by video games and text messages (watch yo mouth!); growing together as a unified collective; increasing our critical environmental and social consciousness; and, deepening our love and respect for Our Mother, the Earth.
We GIVE THANKS that we have the unique opportunity to expand our connection to the natural world as we further develop our sense of self... enjoy!

Ewuare X. Osayande on Hip Hop
[LESS INFO] 4 VIEWS | ADDED 14:13:26 05/03/09
How do racism, sexism, homophobia, and capitalism work together to systemically attack the integrity of Black life and culture? Activist, author, and organizer Ewuare X. Osayande presented Manufacturing Hip Hop Culture: Racism, Sexism, and America at Ithaca College in May 2008. His lecture highlighted the history of Africans on Turtle Island and the impact of marketing masculinity through hip hop on Black youth. Afterward, he stopped by Guerrilla Griots Human Rights Media Arts Center to meet up with Green Guerrillas and share his work as an activist for social change through his organization P.O.W.E.R. (People Organized Working to Eradicate Racism). We had a great time exchanging information, comparing community organizing strategies, and learning more about his views on race, class, gender, religion, war, the environmental movement, and globalization. Green Guerrillas at The Dream Reborn - April 2008
[LESS INFO] 2 VIEWS | ADDED 13:48:27 05/02/09
On April 4-6 2008, the 40th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, Green Guerrillas participated in The Dream Reborn an amazing gathering, sponsored by Green For All, where over 1000 organizers (youth, used-to-be-youth, and elders) representing the totality of social justice issues affecting communities of color throughout the country joined forces, shared struggles, celebrated our cultures, and connected the dots to create sustainable change. Green Guerrillas also shared in the powerful events which commemorated the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. We joined hundreds of people at the National Civil Rights Museum when Dr. Kings family addressed the crowd from the balcony of the Lorraine Motel. As part of the Green For All video team, Green Guerrillas helped document the dreams of dozens of people, and taped several panels and workshops. Green Guerrillas were the youngest members of the grassroots collective responsible for recording this historic event, and were very well received! It was a powerful experience... we are still talking about it! For more information about the conference, and its continued success, check out The Dream Reborn Conference .

"When you give kids who've been stereotyped as not being able to do anything the chance to do something great, they'll step up."
-West Philly High School Electric Vehicle Team Coach
Green Guerrillas Youth Media Tech Collective started in 2006 as a pilot project of S.T.A.M.P.’s Guerrilla Griots Human Rights Media Arts Center—a digital media arts center which embraces, encourages, and energizes voices marginalized in mainstream media.
Early members of Green Guerrillas were local young people who knew relatively nothing about digital media, green building, organic food, or renewable energy at the start of the summer. Through hands-on instruction with an all-volunteer staff, they learned how to use technology to build entrepreneurial job skills, convert a diesel engine to run on vegetable oil, and make a hip hop music video.

Support the New York Campaign for Telephone Justice
[LESS INFO] 0 VIEWS | ADDED 02:18:21 07/25/06
The New York Campaign for Telephone Justice works to end the kickback contract between Verizon/MCI and the New York State Department of Correctional Services, reform the exorbitant rates, and deliver choice, affordability and equitable service to the families and friends of those incarcerated in New York State. The campaign is a project of the Center for Constitutional Rights, in partnership with Fifth Avenue Committee’s Prison Families Community Forum and Prison Families of New York, Inc.
Verizon/MCI charges the families of people in prison 630% more for a phone call than they charge the average consumer.
New York State gets a 57.5% kickback on the profits.
The New York State Department of Correctional Services (DOCS) has made $175 million off of this backdoor twx on prison families since the contract started in 1996.
STOP THE CONTRACT. STOP THE GREED.

Families should not have to choose between putting food on the table and staying connected!
[LESS INFO] 0 VIEWS | ADDED 17:19:06 07/22/06
Single-carrier collect call systems are the norm for telephone service in prisons across the United States. Prisoners may only call collect, and loved ones who accept the calls must accept the terms dictated by the chosen phone company. At a time when prisoners are increasingly housed in facilities hundreds of miles away from their home communities, telephones become for many the only way to stay in touch.
Typically, states receive kickback commissions from the phone companies who receive the contract, creating a situation in which there is no incentive to seek competitive bids. In New York State, 57.5 percent of the profits – over $25 million last year – are kicked back to the state in the form of commissions.
Meanwhile, the effect upon prisoners’ loved ones is profound. With inflated per-minute charges compounded by various surcharges, families often find themselves owing hundreds or even thousands of dollars a month. Disproportionately, prisoners come from poor communities, and the burden of staying in touch falls heaviest on those with the least ability to pay.
