Tweetworks TV Episode 71 - Nomar, Tour de France, Honduras and Python
[LESS INFO] 0 VIEWS | ADDED 15:22:44 07/07/09
Despite the monsoon like rain outside I am in a fantastic mood today. Nomar is back in Boston and saying all the right things about wanting to come back to the Red Sox. Of course that doesn't necessarily mean he'll be coming back but we do have a need for a 5th infielder at the moment so it would definitely be cool. Join me in the Red Sox Nation group to share your thoughts.
Okay, let's get to some groups.
Featured Groups:
* Tour de France (created by Tweetworks) - Every year some crazy dudes jump on bikes and race for 2,000 miles. Join the Tweetworks peloton and tweet each stage with cycling fans from around the world.
* PrensaHonduras (created by Prensa Honduras ) - Stay on top of the breaking news in Honduras.
* TweetworksDevelopers (created by Tweetworks) - In honor of @UltraNurd 's achievement, he created Python bindings/library for the Tweetworks API, I thought it would be nice to recognize the Tweetworks Developers groups. One of the things that has made Twitter so successful is the army of developers that have contributed to the ecosystem. I'd like to invite those same developers to begin leveraging the Tweetworks API to bring rich conversation features to their applications. Check out the fine work of Nicolas Ward in the following locations:

Tweetworks TV Episode 70 - How to Avoid a Twitter Pissing Match
[LESS INFO] 0 VIEWS | ADDED 00:27:34 07/03/09
I learned two very important lessons today.
I was blindsided and pulled into a Twitter pissing match out of nowhere. What started out as what I thought was a nice gesture, sharing a link to a video in which someone I had met was mentioned, quickly turned into a disaster. Before the dust settled I was emphatically told that "I don't get it", accused of being the "civility police", and finally accused of being a chauvinist.
Now before we go any further I have to say I totally blame Gary Vaynerchuk for this because it was one of his videos I shared and he obviously has done something horrendous to this person to make her so angry. (Just kidding Gary, I walked into this one.)
So what did I learn from this experience?
* If you don't really know the person you are talking with on Twitter, tread very lightly. I met this person once, very briefly, at an event. I connected with her on Twitter but we haven't really had any substantive back and forth prior to today. I had no idea she had this quick of a trigger and that lack of knowledge cost me.
* The first time you find yourself uttering (not typing) "WTF" or "What is wrong with this person?" out loud, get out. Stop tweeting and extend an invitation to connect privately. Or just beg off and let the person know you're done. Say you are sorry, do whatever you have to do but get out as quickly as you can. Having said this, what kept me in the conversation was exactly what got me into the conversation in the first place. I had shared the @Garyvee video with my would be assassin because she was mentioned in it and I thought she might like the opportunity to respond. The funny thing is that Gary's video was about listening to Twitter for negative mentions of you or your brand that require your engagement. Unlike Gary's example however, I was living it real-time. I was getting flamed and was left with little choice but to address it.
You simply cannot stand idly by while someone kills you in public. Responding can be messy and you won't always make things perfectly right with the other person but in the end they know you're listening.
Let's get to the groups:
* Entrepreneurs (created by E-Commerce Info ) - A place for entrepreneurs to get advice, feedback, and discuss ideas.
* PalmPre (created by Dan Silverstein ) - A group for Palm Pre users Bonus Group: TwitFights (created by Marvin aka eMarv ) - Debate can be fun. If you know you are going to be going back and forth, why not do it threaded style.

Tweetworks TV Episode 53 - SXSW Hangover BBQ Tweetup
[LESS INFO] 0 VIEWS | ADDED 20:57:16 04/11/09
BBQ, Beer, Pool, Live Music and Great Friends
Thursday night people from all over New England decended upon Firefly's BBQ restaurant in Marlborough, MA for a great night with friends. The evening proved that people will travel for a cool event and that it is absolutely possible to host a big tweetup in the burbs.
A huge thank you to Hung Pham for bringing his musical coolness to the evening. He was fantastic. I highly recommend you consider him for your event. I know we'll have him back.
Lessons Learned About Hosting a Successful Tweetup
* Venue - Choose a venue where you can have exclusive access to the space if possible. It was real nice having the private room where everyone knew that the people they were mingling with were there for the same purpose.
* Do More Than Drink - Enjoying some recreational beverages is great but that will only bring out so many people. Having an interesting dining experience, an activity (pool) and even some entertainment (live music) really helps to bring people out and keep them engaged. It will also get people talking about the event and help you bring a big crowd to your next event.
* Watch the Noise Level - Having live music or a DJ is cool but remember, people are there to network and socialize so be sure they can hear each other.
* Promote the Event - Use a service like Eventbrite to encourage people to register ahead of time. It also gives people an opportunity to see who else is coming, get detailed information about the event (like directions), and gives them a website to share with others. I also used Twitter (through Tweetworks ), Facebook and LinkedIN to get the word out. Luckily, Eventbrite has a built in feature to cross promote your event on all these tools.
* Take Pictures and Video - People like to see how the event went. Be sure to take pictures and video .
* Cell Signal & WiFi - If you are hosting a tweetup it helps to make sure the venue has a good cell signal and maybe WiFi available. While it can be a good thing to have people not staring at their iPhones, people have grown to expect to be able to live tweet, Twitpic and Qik from Tweetups.
* Holidays - I completely forgot that April 9th was Passover. Whoops! We missed out on a good sized Jewish crowd.
* Late Hours - The venue closed at 10:30 and while in the grand scheme of things this was fine I got the feeling that some people would have liked to stay longer. Next time I'll look for a place open until midnight.

Tweetworks TV Episode 51 - A Shout Out to the Ladies
[LESS INFO] 1 VIEWS | ADDED 15:02:42 04/04/09
This one's for all the ladies in the house!
I met a fantastic lady named Lesley Lambert at PodCamp Western Mass who, in addition to being totally awesome in her own right, recently joined Tweetworks and set up a group called TwitterQueens . It seems Lesley and a group of ladies get their tweet on with the hashtag #TwitterQueens and she thought it might be a super cool idea to use Tweetworks for the group. She asked if I would profile the group on the show and I thought that was a fantastic idea. In fact, I thought a whole show celebrating the women focused groups on Tweetworks would be cool. So here we go!
Featured Groups:
* TwitterQueens (created by Lesley Lambert ) - Social Media Vixens using the internet for fun, profit and glory!

Tweetworks TV Episode 48 - Green Thumbs, Celtics and Huh
[LESS INFO] 0 VIEWS | ADDED 21:37:35 03/26/09
Green Day
Spring is here and it's time to start thinking about planting stuff outside. Whether it's a vegetable garden, a new tree in the yard or tending to the flower box in the window nothing says spring like live plants.
It's also almost time for the NBA playoffs and while we're talking about things that are green...how about them Celtics? Way better than the Nicks right? Take that @AJV ! I had to bust AJ Vaynerchuk 's chops a little bit because he kind of dissed Boston in a video at SXSW . Now he wasn't too inflammatory but still come on...this is our house. :)
Huh...That IS cool
I also spent a little time reflecting on a little "huh" moment I had today. It's always weird when you notice something special about your own product that you hadn't really paid much attention to before. When was the last time someone replied to a Twitter post of yours that was more than a day old? Probably never right?
Well, on Tweetworks it's not uncommon for a great thread that was started over a month ago to continue to have life. This is because popular threads tend to stay at the top in a group. People come to the group see something cool and jump in. Since we keep the thread with the most recent activity on top some conversations just keep on going. Like this one by Amy Langford in the Movies where she asks " What's your stick movie? "
Featured Groups
* Agriculture (created by Mark Jewell ) - A group that helps folks in Agriculture network better through Twitter.
* DIY-Landscaping (created by RHH_John ) - Have landscaping questions, or are you a landscaping expert looking to share your knowledge? This is your place.
* SunFlowerClub (created by Sun Flower ) - Sun Flowers are AWESOME
* CelticNation (created by Chad Northrup ) - For lovers of the Green, and those who consider Tom Heinsohn a neutral observer.

Tweetworks TV Episode 46 - Austin, Education and SEO
[LESS INFO] 1 VIEWS | ADDED 20:50:38 03/24/09
Lot's of stuff today. Austin
I find myself more curious than ever about Austin's gravitational pull on Boston's best and brightest. Over the last year or so we've lost Aaron Strout , Peter Kim , Bryan Person , and John Johansen to Austin. Why is this? It's easy to blame Heather Strout as she made the move in 2004 but I suspect there's something else going on. Upcoming Tweetups
* Aaron Strout Coffee Tweetup
* SXSW Hangover BBQ Tweetup Content + Context + Links = Tweetworks Power (aka Google Juice)
An often overlooked benefit of tweeting on Tweetworks is the potential SEO contribution (often called Google Juice ). While tweeting on Twitter (via Twitter.com or other standard Twitter clients) will gain you some serious personal branding juice it often adds little weight your site's Google ranking. This is because the general Twitter time line lacks density of relevant content and context. When you tweet from a Tweetworks group you are creating content on a page rich in contextual relevance.
Example: My good friends Joselin Mane and Rachel Levy who are using @BostonTweetup (check out their new show ) to tweet about Boston area events would benefit immensely from posting their tweets in the BostonTweeters group. First, there are 238 members in the group, as of this post, who are either from the Boston area or interested in connecting with people from the Boston area. By posting from the group it creates an inbound link from a page about Boston (with keywords Events, Tweetup, Twitter, Boston Area) which has lots of fresh relevant content with a ton of inbound and outbound links. Remember, every post from Tweetworks to Twitter has an inbound link back to the group and the thread in which it was originated.
Additionally, Tweetworks users have the option to receive email and/or Twitter direct message (DM) notifications of group activity. So, instead of hoping that their intended audience (followers) just happen to see their tweet in the stream, they can post it where people are not only looking for such information but also where they'll be prompted to go check out the post. Featured Groups:
* ESLJHS117 (created by @melissaleon ) - Mrs. Leon's ESL CLass. Very innovative use of a Tweetworks group for education.
* BentleyTweeters (created by @bderusha ) - Bentley University Students and Alumni
* CoursewareDevelopment (created by @tedkopp ) - Attention all web developers, instructional designers, content developers, graphics developers, technical writers, editors, programmers, managers, and others interested in this subject: if you create or use web-based training, this is your group!

We also rolled out a new notification feature on your groups tab . Notice the new members listed in the sidebar. Be sure to stop by and make them feel welcome.
Featured Groups:
* 90DayChallenge (created by @AskDKLive ) - This is your 911 Emergency Q%A Forum. Only use this if you have an important question and you can't find the answer in the 24/7 chats or the Ohana community. I will personally answer questions here daily. So check back often. " Very interesting, smart and unforeseen usage of a private group. " ~ Mike Langford
* WebinarTweets (created by @WebinarTweets ) - List your webinars, podcasts, & event links @webinartweets . Keep it short and to the point. " @BostonTweetup , a Twitter handle created by @JoselinMane & @bostonmarketer , is employing a similar technique. I suggest they tweet events from the BostonTweeters group for a few reasons; 1) there are 220+ users there who have identified themselves as from the Boston area 2) Tweetworks sends out email and DM notifications to group members so they'll get reminders about your event 3) tweets can be passed to Twitter so you'll get double the potential exposure 4) SEO, tweeting about BostonTweetups in the BostonTweeters group creates a density of relevant content." ~ Mike Langford
* Estonia (created by @krishaamer ) - For all Twitter users from Estonia. "Seeing new international groups never gets old. The Estonia group is cool and very intriguing given that is was created by a user from Lisbon, Portugal." ~ Mike Langford
