Israel hits targets in Syria after stray mortar lands in Golan Heights
The Israeli military says it has scored "direct hits" on targets in neighbouring Syria after responding to stray mortar fire from the country. The exchange came just hours after an appeal for restraint from all sides by UN chief Ban Ki-moon. "A short while ago, a mortar shell hit an open area in the vicinity of an IDF (army) post in the central Golan Heights, as part of the internal conflict inside Syria, causing no damage or injuries," it said. "In response, IDF soldiers fired tank shells towards the source of the fire, confirming direct hits." Israeli troops also fired a warning shot across the UN-monitored ceasefire line on Sunday in the first such shooting on the Golan since the 1973 Middle East war. Koala has a lucky escape from an Australian bushfire
A koala suffers singed fur and burnt paws as emergency teams battle to control a massive bushfire near Adelaide in southern Australia. A passer-by spotted the injured creature sitting in the remains of a burnt tree in a scorched field near Port Lincoln in South Australia, and gave it some water before taking it to a nearby animal hospital for treatment. Meanwhile, around 150 firefighters battled to control the bushfire, which has destroyed several homes and around 2000 hectares of farm and scrubland in the Tulka area west of Adelaide. It is one of a number of similar fires burning across the state. A spokesman for the Country Fire Service, Malim Watts, said: "When this fire started it took off at incredible speed. Very dangerous conditions, catastrophic conditions in fact which basically means that for that community it is a day of survival." 'Fashion icon' Prince champions NZ wool
The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall need a little help from New Zealand's top athletes as they try, but fail, to score on the netball court in Auckland on the latest leg of their Diamond Jubilee Tour. The royal couple met some of New Zealand's most talented sportsmen and women at a specialist training centre in Auckland. Both Prince Charles and the Duchess tried to score a netball goal, but instead hit the rim a number of times. Netball player Maria Tutaia, 25, who is 6ft 2ins tall, joked: ''Let's just say he's pretty good with a crown on his head but his shooting needs some work. But it was good he had a go and nice to see him speak to all the athletes as he went round.'' The Prince got a particularly enthusiastic welcome from rugby sevens player Linda Itunu, who decided to give the royal a hug and then had to wipe the sweat off the side of his face. He later attended the 'Shear Brilliance' wool promotion event where he told the crowd he was a champion of the wool trade: "According to GQ magazine, I am a fashion icon and so I just wanted you to know that I am wearing some very very smart gents natty New Zealand wool." Wreaths laid at Camp Bastion for fallen
UK servicemen and women in Afghanistan hold a Remembrance Day service at Camp Bastion to remember those who have lost their lives. More than 430 British troops have been killed in Afghanistan since the US-led intervention in 2001, yet stability remains elusive and violence high, while relations between Western troops and Afghan forces and civilians are increasingly frayed. About 500 British soldiers are to be withdrawn from Afghanistan by the end of this year, leaving behind 9000 troops. Venice tourists up to waists in water
The lagoon city of Venice continues to suffer from high waters which reached five feet above sea level on Sunday after continuous rain pounded many regions of Italy over the weekend. Around 70 per cent of Venice was flooded after days of relentless rainfall in a particularly severe 'Acqua Alta' or high water season with levels among the highest ever recorded, city officials said . "The red alert we issued last Friday is still in place: the heavy rain recorded in the last few hours confirms our worries and are in line with our forecasts," said Venice councillor for civil protection, Daniele Stival. Some 70 percent of the city was reportedly covered by the flood waters and proved a bizarre spectacle for tourists on the massive Concordia cruise ship as it sailed past the city on Sunday. Tourists could be seen wading through almost waist-deep water, desperately trying to keep themselves and their belongings dry. Many shops, houses and other buildings have been flooded and remain closed. Read more: www.telegraph.co.uk Get the latest ... Moment Myanmar quake strikes caught on camera
The moment the quake struck was caught on camera in the Sagaing area, with footage showing the dome of Mya Thein Tan Pagoda swaying dramatically. State television reported that more than a dozen pagodas and stupas in five townships were damaged in the quake, and many of them had their so-called "umbrellas" atop the dome-shaped structures crash down. The uppermost parts of the domes usually contain encased relics of the Buddha and small Buddha images, and sometimes jewels. Damage to them is taken as an especially bad omen. The biggest single death toll was reported by a local administrative officer in Sintku township - on the Irrawaddy River near the quake's epicentre - who said that six people had died there and another 11 were injured. According to news reports, several people died when a bridge under construction across the Irrawaddy River collapsed east of Shwebo. Paula Broadwell on writing Gen Petraeus biography
CIA director David Petraeus has admitted to having an affair with Paula Bradwell, a reserve Army officer who penned his biography while he was head of the US army. Here she talks about getting to know the former General in Afghanistan. Paula Broadwell first met fellow West Point graduate David Petraeus in the spring of 2006, when she was a graduate student at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government. He was a lieutenant general working on a counter-insurgency manual that would be tested during his command in Iraq and the university had invited him to give a speech. Ms Broadwell, who was in the Army Reserve, went on to write a biography of Mr Petraeus and spent time with him in Afghanistan. The FBI discovered the relationship by monitoring Mr Petraeus' emails, after investigators were alerted that Ms Broadwell may have had access to his personal email account. Mr Petraeus admitted to an extramarital affair in tendering his resignation, which President Barack Obama accepted on Friday. The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall visited the Cenotaph in Auckland, New Zealand, on Remembrance Sunday to pay tribute to New Zealand's fallen soldiers. More than 300 people, including Maori elders, war veterans, military chiefs and politicians gathered in overcast and windy weather for the annual service commemorating Armistice Day 1918 which ended hostilities in the First World War. Prince Charles laid an Armistice Day wreath at the foot of the cenotaph, on behalf of the Queen before greeting the crowd. The royal couple will spend Monday in Auckland, before moving to Wellington on Wednesday, where the Prince will celebrate his 64th birthday. New Zealand is the last leg of Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall's Pacific tour, organised to mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. George Entwistle's resignation statement in full
George Entwistle has resigned as director general of the BBC, following criticism of the corporation's handling of a Newsnight report into child sex abuse that implicated an innocent man. George Entwistle has taken responsibility as the BBC's editor-in-chief for what Lord Patten, chairman of the BBC Trust, said was "unacceptable shoddy journalism" that exposed a former Tory peer to false allegations of paedophilia. Mr Entwistle earlier said the Newsnight report should never have been broadcast, and that he had only become aware of the story after it was aired. In his brief resignation statement outside Broadcasting House, Mr Entwistle said: "In the light of the fact that the director-general is also the editor-in-chief and ultimately responsible for all content; and in the light of the unacceptable journalistic standards of the Newsnight film broadcast on Friday 2nd November; I have decided that the honourable thing to do is to step down from the post of director-general. "When appointed to the role, with 23 years' experience as a producer and leader at the BBC, I was confident the Trustees had chosen the best candidate for the post, and the right person to tackle the challenges and opportunities ahead. However, the wholly exceptional events of the past few weeks have led me to conclude that the BBC should appoint a new leader. Speed marching Royal Marines set off from Downing Street
Royal Marines are taking part in special marches around London as part of a fundraising effort ahead of Remembrance Sunday. A group of Royal Marines have set off on a 16-mile and 640 yards run to mark the founding of the regiment in 1664 and raise %pound50000 for charity. Meanwhile a second group are attempting to break a world record for the fastest speed march, currently held by the Royal Air Force Regiment. The soldiers plan to complete a 26.5 mile course in less than four hours and 19 minutes, while carrying kit and an SA80 assault rifle, which combined weigh more than 40lb. They set off into light rain after meeting Prime Minister David Cameron and the Military Wives Choir, who sang Jerusalem before the groups marched through the main gates of Downing Street. Female US Marines prepare for front line role
There are 12000 women in the US Marines out of a total fighting force of 197000. In common with the rest of the US Army (and the British Army), they are banned from serving on the front line. But, under a controversial review being carried out by the Pentagon, that might be about to change. As the US Department of Defense considers whether women should be allowed to serve in front line combat units, Gen James Amos, the US Marine Corps commandant, has unveiled plans to send 40 women to 19 battalions that regularly fight close to the front line. It may be nothing more than a "feasibility study" at this stage but for the Marines %mdash America's premier fighting force and the most male of the US's armed services %mdash it is as momentous as universal suffrage was for civilian society nearly 100 years ago, and could have massive ramifications, not just for women soldiers in the United States, but in Britain and all over the world.
