Cliff Diving Takes The Plunge In The UK
Olympic Diving this is not. Brave souls perform spectacular stunts from breathtaking heights, delighting the gathering crowds. Full story: Ancient castles, spectacular ruins, breathtaking scenery and ... cliff diving. Yes, far from the confines of the Olympic swimming pool, world class divers plunge 27 meters from the cliffs of the Welsh coastline. Their amazing twists and turns stun and delight the packed crowd who have gathered at St David's Blue Lagoon. The eighth event in this year's Red Bull cliff diving series saw Steven Lobue from the USA win his first ever event. He attributes his victory to a relaxed attitude after arriving late due to flight delays. [Steven Lobue, Fort Lauderdale, USA]: "I just came in with an attitude and like forget it let's do this, you know what I mean. Came out and just went and didn't think too much about what I was doing. Just went up and kind of let it happen. Really had a consistent list and that's what it takes to beat any of these guys." Orlando Duque of Colombia, the series leader, came second with a score of 467.80. But Lobue clinched it with a back dive that saw him finish with a points tally of 481.90. The final round of the series will be held in Oman on September 27. More Claims of Poorly-Built Schools after Yunnan Quakes
At least 81 people died in Yiliang County after two quakes struck southwest China's Yunnan province last Friday. Now, teachers are reporting widespread structural damage to schools across the county. The shallow 5.6 magnitude quakes stuck the mountainous area, triggering landslides and bringing down homes. It also struck the county's schools, with at least 13 damaged. One elementary school completed less than two years ago collapsed, killing three students. [Mr Yang, Teacher, Fada Central Elementary School] "Right now five people are in hospital, three died. A lot of schools suffered fractures; they're scared to open for class. The school buildings are new, but some are badly damaged." An emergency center was set up at the Maoping Middle School, but one teacher there tells NTD that they're running short of water. [Mr Li, Teacher, Maoping Middle School] "Basically all the walls in the classrooms are cracked. There are still about 200 students living in the field. We're giving them meals, but running water has been cut. We have to prepare our own water. There's enough for cleaning and cooking, but there's no drinking water." Another teacher says two schools in his town were severely damaged. [Mr Chen, Teacher, Luojiexiang Central Elementary School] "Two students have been injured. No buildings collapsed but they have been torn and are dangerous. We need experts to assess whether classes can resume." Last week's quakes affected more than 740000 people, and authorities ... China's Trade Data a Further Sign of Slowdown
China's export market is continuing to grow at lower than expected levels. That's a worry for a country where a quarter of its GDP is generated through its export sales. New data on Monday showed that exports grew at just 2.7%, below a forecast of 3% in a Reuter's poll. Imports have also fallen, down 2.6% in August from a year ago. This indicates sluggish domestic demand. Chinese leaders had hoped to boost domestic spending to counter a slowdown in the global economy. Economist Xiao Geng says the new numbers are bad news. [Xiao Geng, Director of Research, Fung Global Institute] "My reaction is that this is very bad. This is so bad that you actually see both internal and external pressures, and it also indicates that there are no immediate solutions, because the Chinese authorities already started to relax the monetary policy and fiscal policy a few months ago, and obviously there's no results, there's no effectiveness. So this is really bad, and some new ways to deal with the situation have to come out very soon." Monday's figures come after data released on Sunday, which showed industrial output growth had hit its weakest annual pace in August in more than three years. Xiao Geng believes that the poor data may hurt the ruling regime, which has depended on economic growth for its legitimacy to rule. [Xiao Geng, Head Researcher, Fung Global Institute] "Well I think it's very important because a lot of Chinese are still at the very low income level, and they need employment ... China Calls Japan's Diaoyu Island Purchase "Illegal"
The Chinese regime has called Japan's move to purchase a group of disputed islands "illegal and invalid." Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Osamu Fujimura announced the purchase on Monday, one day after the leaders of the two countries met at the APEC Summit in Russia. During that brief exchange, Chinese leader Hu Jintao had warned Japan to realized, quote, "the severity of the situation and not make a wrong decision", state-run CCTV reported. The Diaoyu Islands, called Senkaku in Japan, is a group of small islands in the East China Seas. It's been the subject of sovereignty disputes between Japan, China and Taiwan. Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hong Lei told reporters on Monday that Chinese authorities oppose Japan's purchase of the islands. [Hong Lei, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman] "We are closely following the developments of the issue and will take necessary measures to protect the country's territorial sovereignty." The Chinese regime had endorsed recent anti-Japanese protests in the country, after Japan briefly detained Chinese nationals who had landed on the Diaoyu islands. Professor Xia Ming from the City University of New York believes Chinese authorities are fanning nationalism at the risk of an all-out conflict with Japan. [Professor Xia Ming, New York City University] "It does not seem likely that the Communist government can get the Diaoyu Islands, so this struggle means little to the Chinese public. China Focus - Why Hong Kong's Hunger Strike Over 'National Education' Matters for Mainland China
Brainwashing for children. That's what some in Hong Kong have been calling the new National Education Curriculum. Back in July, Hong Kong's leaders made it mandatory starting this fall semester. Tens of thousands of angry residents took to the streets%mdashcalling it pro-communist propaganda for kids. But the latest round of protests and hunger strikes ended yesterday (Sunday), after Hong Kong leader CY Leung announced that the curriculum would no longer be required%mdashthat schools could choose whether to use it or not. But is this a victory for protesters? And what effect did the protests have in mainland China, where talk about the protests was both trending, and censored? Chinese Whispers About Xi Jinping's Disappearance
China's leader-in-waiting has apparently disappeared. Xi Jinping hasn't been seen in over a week. He's cancelled meetings with visiting foreign dignitaries like US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and today, he stood up the Danish prime minister. China's foreign ministry has also declined to comment on his whereabouts. Chinese state-run media has always been tight lipped about the personal lives of top ranking members of the Politburo, China's ruling elite. That leaves the rumor mill to dish out explanations, and there's been plenty about why Xi has been out of sight. The rumors, many coming from overseas Chinese media, have ranged from Xi hurting his back swimming, being involved in a car accident, to sustaining an injury fleeing an assassination attempt by supporters of ousted Politburo member Bo Xilai. Brosnan plays Philip, a middle-aged Englishman living in Denmark who has tragically lost his wife. At the airport on the way to his son's wedding in Italy, he literally bumps into the mother of the bride, Ida. Mixed Victory in Elections for Hong Kong Pro-Democracy Groups
21 out of 40 available seats in Hong Kong's Legislative Council election%mdashit was less than Hong Kong's pro-democracy groups expected to win. Deep divisions across pan-democracy parties have been blamed for their failure to capitalize on the recent protests against pro-Beijing policies. Instead, parties like Beijing-friendly DAB, or Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong, gained grounds. [Michael DeGolyer, Baptist University Political Science Professor]: "The key thing is that the DAB which is the core of the pro-government coalition group did very well. They have very good control of their voters, they ran their tickets very wisely, they allied with a couple of independents that they got in. Very good coordination. Whereas the democrats went after each other. Threw everything but the furniture at each other in some cases and ended up losing votes and seats." The 70 seat legislative council is responsible for passing policies, budgets and formulating legislation. Sunday's general election was for 40 seats, while the remaining 35 is chosen by special interest groups. The unexpectedly poor showing by the pro-democracy camp led veteran Albert Ho to quit as chairman of the Democratic Party on Monday. However, it still managed to gain a third of the available seats to give it a crucial veto bloc over future policies, including democratic reforms. Gift Giving on Teacher's Day: Bribery or Appreciation?
Teacher's Day in China has become more like a Teacher's Birthday. That's because parents are now lavishing their children's teachers with gifts%mdashexpensive gifts. Some Chinese teachers can now expect things ranging from flowers to paid vacations, depending on how much parents can afford. And if the teacher doesn't like the gifts, the student may be the one who suffers. One mother from Shanxi Province told NTD she learned that the hard way. [Ruan Li, Mother of a Shanxi student]: "He (the teacher) had been making it hard for my son. He kept my son after class and asked for a meeting with the parents. When I met with him he said he would suspend my son. The administrator couldn't figure out what was wrong, and suggested that I should buy something for the teacher. I didn't though. " Teacher's Day was historically celebrated on the birthday of Confucius, an ancient Chinese sage. The Communist Party scrapped the celebration after taking power, and later reinstated Teacher's Day to be September 10th. Traditionally the Day was used to show appreciation for teachers, now it's taken on a different turn. [Guo Quanfang, Teacher at University of Jinan in Shandong Province]: "Parents are afraid that if others send gifts and they don't, their kids will be treated differently. Many not only send flowers, but also gift cards." Parents now use the day to influence their children's teachers. While most gifts range between $15 to $95 in value, some having a price tag of over $2000. Not all ... From: NTDTV Views: 17 1 ratings Time: 02:13 More in News & Politics

Superhero Rescue for Child Dangling From Window
Thanks to some quick thinking and nimble moves, a man helped rescue a toddler dangling from a guardrail. The rescue took place in Guangdong province last Thursday. The young man, surnamed Pan, was walking on the street when he saw the toddler hanging off the side of a building. The little boy had crawled out the window from the sixth floor and fallen through the metalwork. Mr. Pan quickly scaled up the building, and supported the boy until help arrived. He said his only instinct was to save the child. [Mr. Pan, Rescuer]: "I wanted to push him up but I couldn't. I could just hold him up so that he could breath normally. Firefighters asked me to wrap the toddler with the blanket, I didn't think about that at that time I just wanted to save him." Neighbors who saw the boy dangling there called for help. For twenty minutes, Mr. Pan held the boy there. When the ambulance arrived, the 18 months old boy was rushed to the hospital. The boy's mother did not know what had happened at the time. She was in tears thinking about what would have happened if Mr. Pan had not stepped in. [Toddler's Mother]: "I thought he was sleeping at that time. I am very grateful to his help." The boy's doctor said he only sustained minor bruises on his head and does not seem to be otherwise affected. High Voter Turnout in Hong Kong, Seen as Tied to Protests
Voters were thronging the polls on Sunday, as around 53% of Hong Kong's registered voters made their voices heard%mdashmany having already done so in recent days, in a massive protest movement that took the city's streets. That movement, which saw marches and wide-scale demonstrations by hundreds of thousands of citizens, criticized and demanded the retraction of a plan by the current government to institute so-called "patriotic education" courses as part of mandatory schooling. The Beijing-backed leader Leung Chun-ying, whose government issued the plan, retracted it on Saturday in the face of the massive protests. But pro-democracy Civic Party candidate Tanya Chan was still shaking hands with passers-by at a street corner minutes before polls closed at 10:30pm local time. She said the high turnout might not necessarily mean victory for her camp in the tight race. [Tanya Chan, Civic Party]: [Female, Cantonese] "It is a very tight and intense election. Obviously some people think that the national education issue can help boost the voting rate. But at this final, most crucial moment, I have to tell voters that this is not necessarily beneficial to the pro-democracy camp." On Saturday, Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying withdrew the plan for compulsory patriotism classes that protesters described as Chinese Communist Party-style propaganda aimed at indoctrinating children. Bali, the 23 ft long python, undergoes her annual health check at Chester Zoo in the north-west of England. She was one of two snakes being given the all-clear by vets at the zoo. As well as checks on her general health, she also met two cardio experts from Cardiff Metropolitan University. They performed ultrasound scans on her heart. Bali had her eyes covered throughout some of the process to keep her calm as she was checked over. Reticulated pythons are the longest species of snake in the world. They mainly feed on rodents, small mammals and birds, while larger specimens have been known to eat small primates and pigs. From: NTDTV Views: 142 7 ratings Time: 00:58 More in Pets & Animals
