Cornell researchers studying Australian social huntsman spiders have discovered that younger siblings thrive when raised in nests with older siblings. Bigger brothers and sisters capture bigger, juicier prey, which they - at least occasionally - share with their younger siblings. Through field data and laboratory experiments, the researchers showed that younger siblings weighed substantially more when they shared the prey of their elder brethren. Since smaller spiders eat relatively little, there is little to no cost to the older siblings. And healthier family groups help carry on that family's genes. A study by Eric Yip and Linda Rayor, published in the journal Animal Behavior, describes how prey sharing can directly benefit spiders living as a group.

On the inaugural Earth Day 43 years ago, 12,000 events were held around the country. Two-thirds of Congress spoke at an Earth Day ceremony, and several environmental acts were born. Today, politicians are directing dollars away from conservation efforts, environmentalists are seen as "preachy," and the environment and economic development are frequently in conflict.So said The Nature Conservancy's chief scientist, Peter Kareiva, Ph.D. '81, during his Jill and Ken Iscol Distinguished Environmental Lecture, April 22, 2013.Kareiva stressed that supporting large-scale restoration projects, collaborating with corporations and enlisting the energies of the younger generation could change the fate of our planet. Conservationists must "put people back in nature" by pointing out that what's good for the environment is good for humans, and that economic growth and environmental health are linked, he added. The annual Iscol lecture, presented by the David R. Atkinson Center for a Sustainable Future, brings prominent leaders to campus to discuss crucial environmental issues.

Eric Alterman, Distinguished Professor of English and Journalism at Brooklyn College and the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism and columnist for The Nation, gave a talk entitled The Search for a Liberal Foreign Policy on April 22, as part of the Einaudi Center's Foreign Policy Distinguished Speaker Series. Alterman contends that there has not been a strong tradition of liberal foreign policy after Franklin D. Roosevelt because liberals make foreign policy in anticipation of public reaction and to head off any strong conservative critique rather than focusing on finding a solution to the issue itself. The Foreign Policy Distinguished Speaker Series features prominent leaders in international affairs who can address topical issues from a variety of perspectives. The Speaker Series is part of the Foreign Policy Initiative at Cornell University led by the Einaudi Center to maximize the intellectual impact of Cornell's outstanding resources in this area.

Claude M. Steele, internationally renowned social scientist and Dean of the Graduate School of Education at Stanford, delivered the Robert L. Harris, Jr. ADVANCEments in Science Lecture on April 11, 2013. He discusses his theory of stereotype threat, which has been the focus of much of his research and writing throughout his academic career. The theory examines how people from different groups, being threatened by different stereotypes, can have quite different experiences in the same situation. It has also been used to understand group differences in performance ranging from the intellectual to the athletic. Steele's recent book, Whistling Vivaldi: And Other Clues to How Stereotypes Affect Us and what we Can Do, published in 2010, was based on this research and lays out a plan to mitigate the negative effects of "stereotype threat."

Those were the basic guidelines for engineering students in Mechanical Synthesis 2250, an introduction to product design. The sophomore-level course, co-taught by mechanical engineering professors Hod Lipson and Zellman Warhaft, took a new twist this year: For the first time, students had their prototype designs printed on Cornell's 3-D printers in Upson Hall. As a final step, students sent their designs to a 3-D printing company like Shapeways or Materialise, where anyone can order and buy the products, custom-printed in materials like food-grade ceramic, metal and plastic.

Stern develops techniques to construct symplectic 4-manifolds focusing on those with Euler characteristic three.
