Major Breakthrough in Cure for Dengue Fever
The fight against dengue fever is heating up -- a research team in Brazil say they are close to a major breakthrough... Full Story: Researchers working on eradicating dengue announced on Monday they are closer to their goal than ever before. The announcement was made at a specialist institute in Brazil where Australian and Brazilian experts are working together to combat the disease. Dengue currently affects 2.5 billion people in 100 countries, mainly in South America, Africa and Southeast Asia. The new method involves infecting male mosquitoes with a bacteria that is transmitted to females when they mate. The females will then produce many less eggs, or even become sterile. The Research Coordinator for the project says they are working on adapting the process for Brazil. [Professor Scott O'Neill, Research Coordinator]: "Brazil is important because it has a major dengue problem. The ecology of dengue in Brazil is quite different to Australia and also to Southeast Asia. So, it's an opportunity for us to examine our control measure in a different ecology and to see how best to optimize it for local conditions in Brazil." The downside of this method is that it depends on the mosquito's ability and willingness to reproduce. But it is low risk and 100 percent self-sufficient. [Doctor Paulo Gadelha, Research Institute President]: "As it was said, it's a natural, self-sufficient alternative and at the same time it presents a low level of risk to the environment and to the human ... Anti-Jihad Adverts Hit New York City
Controversial adverts in New York City call on people to support Israel and defeat savagery. Full Story: With much of the Muslim world still seething over the YouTube video ridiculing the Prophet Mohammad, controversial adverts have popped up in New York City subway stations. The adverts, sponsored by the pro-Israel American Freedom Defense Initiative, equate Islamic jihad with savagery. And although the Metropolitan Transit Authority tried to remove the ads, a federal judge ruled they were protected by freedom of speech. The organization responsible for the adverts says the only controversy is when the government tries to restrict free speech. [David Yerushalmi, American Freedom Defense Initiative, Representative]: "The news item is when the government attempts to restrict free speech, if the government behaved properly, this would just be speech like any other speech, we'd all kind of nod, some people would shake their heads in disgust, others might shake their heads in agreement and others might approach it in a non-plused way, but that's what the First Amendment is about," But a representative from the Council on American-Islamic Relations holds a quite different opinion. [Cyrus Mcgoldrick, Council on American-Islamic Relations]: "Of course I have mixed feelings about it. You know, it's disgusting, it's despicable, I have to laugh as well. The use of the word 'savage' is so classically colonialist and everything." Despite the prominent placing, most subway riders ... From: NTDTV Views: 27 1 ratings Time: 02:12 More in People & Blogs

Full Story: The World Health Organization is investigating the emergence of a new SARs-like virus that has killed one man and left another fighting for his life. The virus belongs to a large family of viruses known as coronaviruses, that includes the common cold, as well as more serious illnesses like the SARS virus that killed 800 people in 2002. The World Health Organization confirmed on Tuesday that the latest outbreak is a new form of virus. [Gregory Hartl, World Health Organization, Spokesperson]: "It's a coronavirus, it's a new coronavirus, and it's a virus which causes pneumonia and pretty rapid kidney failure." The UN health body put out a global alert on Sunday, after a man from the Middle Eastern country of Qatar was struck down with the new virus. This follows the death of a man in Saudi Arabia from an almost identical virus three months ago. [Gregory Hartl, World Health Organization, Spokesperson]: "Well again it's only two cases so far, so one of the things we need is more information, we need more information on is this really only two cases or is it the tip of an iceberg." The World Health Organization is investigating how the new virus is transmitted. [Gregory Hartl, World Health Organization, Spokesperson]: "We don't know if it's going to kill a lot of people or if this is just a virus which will pop up on occasion and ... The bodies of a German climber and a Nepali guide have been recovered from the snow. [Captain Pasang, Mountain Air Organization]: "The avalanche that came this morning at 4am from Camp 4 of Manaslu Himal buried the people at Camp 3." Five climbers were rescued by helicopters and flown to Kathmandu. [Captain Pasang, Mountain Air Organization]: "As soon as we came to know about the accident we mobilized one of our helicopters, we brought three French and one German national to the hospital." The accident took place at more than 20000 feet, making it hard for land rescue teams to reach. Rescue helicopters were impeded by cloud and fog. The nationality of the missing climbers is not yet known. Nepal is a popular climbing destination, with eight of the world's 14 highest mountains, including Mount Everest. LONG Raft Race down the Amazon River
The 14th International Amazon River Raft Race began this Saturday (September 22) down the world's longest river. The race started in Iquitos, a city in the northeast region of Peru. Teams were separated into two categories. The foreigner category had Americans, Canadians, and Brits, and the other category was the Peruvian national team. Each team had to construct their own raft. It had to be made with a minimum of eight logs of balsawood and at least five-and-a-half yards long. The rules were bent slightly for the foreigners who could get help from the natives if they couldn't build their own raft. The racers were only allowed single-bladed paddle to traverse 118 miles of river. [Mike Collins, Race Organizer] "It's the longest, hardest race in the world, in the world's biggest and most famous river. My idea is to use that to promote tourism." The race took three days to complete with breaks for meals and rest along the way. Prizes were divided into both National and Foreign categories with first and second prizes given to womens', mens', and mixed teams. Wang Lijun's verdict today came as little surprise to most observers%mdash15 years for crimes including defection and covering up a murder. While some observers say he escaped lightly, other say Wang has been spared of even more serious offences%mdashthat of killing prisoners of conscience for their organs. Spokesperson for rights group the World Organization to Investigate the Persecution of Falun Gong, Wang Zhiyuan, says Wang did this while he was police chief of Jinzhou in Liaoning province. This military policeman said Wang at the time issued an order to kill, and eradicate all Falun Gong practitioners." Falun Gong is a spiritual practiced rooted in traditional Chinese cultural beliefs. The Communist Party started a nationwide crackdown of the practice in 1999, after it gained widespread popularity throughout China. There, the team discovered an untouched wreck with a figurehead. The bottles were likely bottled in Stockholm and may have been proceeding to St. Petersburg. [Dennis %Aringsberg, Ocean X Team]: "I tasted some and the taste stayed in my mouth the whole day in fact. Fantastic! I've never drank anything like it. It's good." Egypt Opens Two Ancient Tombs
Egypt reopens two ancient tombs after undergoing renovations. Full Story: Two ancient tombs in Egypt were reopened on Thursday after extensive renovations. The two tombs - "Serapeum" and "Akhethotep Ptahhotep" - had undergone ten years of renovation, with an estimated cost of 2 million US dollars. The tomb of Serapeum was discovered by archaeologist Auguste Mariette in 1851. Its significance lies in the sarcophagus of the bull 'Apis', which pharaohs considered sacred. [Mohamed Ibrahim, Egypt Minister of Antiquities]: "We have finished two tombs. Perhaps in the next week we are going to open about five tombs in Giza which were restored also and after that we will go to the new valley, we restored another great temple there - the temple of Hebes - so we are waiting. But our problem nowadays is the economy, you know, because of the economic situation, we have a shortage of money nowadays." Last year's uprising has hit the country's tourism. During the 18 days of protests in 2011 that toppled former President Hosni Mubarak, tourists fled the country and have since then only trickled back. Tourism accounted for around 10 percent of Egypt's economy before last year's uprising. Billionaire Numbers Shrink in China
Billionaires in China have fallen in numbers for the first time in seven year, according to a report by Hurun, a luxury magazine publisher. Hurun's annual report on China's richest 1000 people said that this year, China had 251 people worth over US $1 billion. That's 20 people less compared to last year, and follows six years of the country recording more billionaires each year. And it's not just the number of the mega-rich that has dropped. Hurun says that the collective wealth of those they surveyed has fallen by 9%, or around $860 million in the past year. Falling stock prices and a slump in the property market are being blamed for shrinking wealth. According to Hurun, the property market was no longer the top source of wealth. China's local governments and land developers have cashed in on the booming property market, fueling price surges that regulators are now trying hard to contain. For the record, the riches person in China is Zong Qinghou%mdashan entrepreneur who founded China's largest beverage company. Hurun says he is worth $12.6 billion. Mass Chaos at Foxconn's Taiyuan Factory
On Sunday night, a dispute at a Foxconn factory in Taiyuan turned into a large-scale skirmish, mobilizing thousands of workers. Reports as to the number of people sent to the hospital vary, but it is estimated that about 40 people were injured, leaving several in critical condition. The source of the dispute is unclear. Some sources report it was a personal conflict between workers from Henan and Shandong provinces. Users of Sina weibo, China's biggest microblogging site, are saying the conflict was between Foxconn guards and workers from Henan province. Neither theory has been verified and Foxconn representatives say it is under investigation. State-run media reported that five thousand police were deployed to the scene last night to bring things under control. By 3 am this morning, state-run media said everything was back to normal.
