Following the end of Gaddafi's rule, these groups are now hoping to return to the land of their birth. Our Italian correspondents bring us this report. In 1967 the Jewish Community was forced to leave Libya as a consequence of the Arab-Israeli Six-Day War. Three years later, and not long after coming to power, Gaddafi expelled 20000 Italian settlers. Now these two distinct groups are both working with lawyers in Italy to seek redress for their forced exodus. [Davide Messica, Reconciliation Committee]: "In 1967, the outbreak of the Six-Day War started persecution against the Jews. The Arab movement, headed by Nasser in Egypt, lead to an insane ideology which identified the Jews in the Diaspora as Israeli citizens. This confusion of roles produced a pogrom against Jewish people by the Libyan-Arab population. Arabs began chasing Jews, burning their shops, attacking them on the street, beating and killing them." Two years later Gaddafi seized power in Libya, and the following year he expelled all of Libya's Italians. Italy had ruled Libya from 1911 to 1941, and the mass deportation was meant as a punishment.
