Shen Yun Performing Arts principal male dancer, Golden Li shares his insights and involvement in past NTD competitions. [Golden Li, Shen Yun Principal Male Dancer]: "Through that process your development as a dancer, it grows and you mature as a dancer through the competition." In 2008, Li won the gold medal in the junior male division. He repeated the accomplishment, winning the gold medal in the adult male division in 2009 and 2010. The 20-year-old dancer has participated in every NTD dance competition. He speaks of perfecting the art of physical expression, or 'shēn yùn'—unique to classical Chinese dance. [Golden Li, Shen Yun Principal Male Dancer]: "It's a different experience every year because you improve in different areas. Like this year and last year, there's a lot of different ways you can use 'shēn yùn'... it's also one of the most important reasons why we have these competitions is that dancers can improve." One element of the competition that incorporates this shēn yùn is the portrayal of characters. Li talks about how he personalizes each role.
