The official cause of death was a virus, but the boy's parents believe he was probably tortured to death. Here's more. Nearly one thousand people in Nanchang city, in China's Jiangxi Province, protested on May 28th the death of a 16 year-old boy. The parents say he had been taken into custody for involvement in a robbery. The boy died while in custody on March 25th—supposedly from viral myocarditis. The parents say he had always been healthy and had never been to a hospital in his life. After much persistence, the parents were finally allowed to see their son's body. They say his chest had bruises across it and other signs that he had been badly beaten or tortured. The protesters were mostly farmers from Ganzhou city. They came out to demand answers from the responsible officials. They held up banners saying "I want to survive" and "We are asking for a redress of grievances on behalf of the people." When they arrived at the Jiang Xi Provincial government's building, the crowd attracted many spectators, causing heavy traffic. Chinese authorities deployed hundreds of police who surrounded the protesters. Both parties stayed at a standstill for many hours before the protesters dispersed.
