Sony becoming Olympus' top shareholder
Sony is becoming Olympus' top shareholder, as the two form an alliance to produce medical equipment. Full Story: Sony is becoming the biggest shareholder of Olympus, forming a partnership in medical equipment development after buying the stake for 50 billion yen, or $643.5 million USD. Olympus, a Japanese camera and endoscope maker, has been strapped for cash after having to cover for losses due to a scandal that dates back to the 1990s. The new deal will have Sony holding an 11.46 percent stake through newly issued shares of Olympus, with that likely increasing over the years. Explaining their decision on monday, Sony Corp. Chief Executive Kazuo Hirai said the risks of entering into a new market will be mitigated in the venture. [Kazuo Hirai, Sony President]: "With the Sony and Olympus partnership, it is our hope that together we can make a comeback through innovation, and provide high quality medical equipment for people around the world." While Sony's television production has not been making money, they hope to incorporate impressive technologies such as 3D and 4K into endoscopes. The two companies are also planning to co-operate in producing digital cameras. Olympus Corp shares moved up 1 percent and Sony also went up 5 percent with the news. 7 Year Old Boy Shows Supernormal Strength, Lifts 200 Pounds with Ease
Seven year old Yang Jinlong from Fengyang County, Anhui Province is no ordinary boy. He is proving to have supernormal strength way beyond his years. When he was born he weighed just over 12 pounds, he now weighs 112 pounds. Yang has shown us some of his amazing feats. He walked around the yard with a 90 pound bag of corn on his back, as a warm up. Then he carried his father Yang Zuyuan who weighs near 200 pounds, without any difficulty. Mighty mouse has a sense of humor, when asked by a reporter why he has so much strength. [Yang Jinlong, Super Boy]: "Because I'm fat." His father explained it a little more. [Yang Zuyuan, Super Boys Father]: "He has a good appetite, eats a lot. He can eat two or three bowls of rice, similar to that of an adult. He can eat lots since childhood." It appears that the young fellow is not too happy with his large frame. [Yang Jinlong, Super Boy]: "Now, I have been on a diet, dared not eat much, for dozens of days." As a finale he then managed to pull a car with five people inside, weighing about 1.4 tons for a few yards. Activists in Hong Kong Demonstrate on China's National Day
Protesters gathered outside Golden Bauhinia Square in Hong Kong today (October 1), the site of a flag raising celebration for Chinese National Day. The 50-some protesters are continuing to show discontent at a proposed national education course. Demonstrators say it glorifies the violent and often bloody history of the Chinese regime and promotes communist ideas. Hong Kong officials say they will no longer make the course mandatory, but have refused to withdraw it completely from the education system. Head of student group Scholarism, Joshua Wong says making the course optional is still not good enough. He sees it as an issue of patriotism and sovereignty to keep the course from being taught in Hong Kong. [Joshua Wong, Co-Founder of Student Group Scholarism]: "We, Scholarism and a group of Hong Kong citizens, are very patriotic. Because we are patriotic, this is why we don't want the next generation in Hong Kong and China to lose their ability to think independently and to lose their freedom to think. So we choose this patriotic day, because we love our country, to protest during the flag-raising ceremony and to look for Leung Chun-ying, our chief executive, because Leung Chun-ying still has not responded to the citizens' demand to withdraw the national education curriculum." The League of Social Democrats joined the student group. They're a part of a pro-democracy political party. Their grievances are different but their message is the same: keep Hong Kong free from ... Jet Pack, Jet Ski Hybrid Takes To The Waves -- And The Skies!
The Flyboard, a cross between a jet ski and a jet pack, takes off in Australia. Full Story: The Flyboard, a combination of jet ski and jet pack, is on display in Australia's Gold Coast waters on Monday. French jet skier Franky Zapata invented the device in 2011. Riders can fly up to 32 feet in the air, and also dive, dolphin-like, under the water. The Flyboard is attached to a jet ski by a hose that pumps water to keep it aloft. Riders use their feet to control the direction, and their hands to keep it stable. [Peter Hendra, Flyboard Australia Director and Distributer] "It's an extension of your body, you pull that Ironman pose, stand up, and you'll freely fly around." The Flyboard sells for nearly 12000 US dollars. Italian City Transforms to Medevial Times
A citizen contest with a tradition of over 800 years is being kept alive in many Italian cities. It's called "Palio" and usually ends with a costumed horse race. People dress in Medieval garb and take part in a parade to commemorate significant historical events. [Parade Member] "For us it is a magical atmosphere where the whole town is involved throughout the year. From drawing up the historical theme to the musician's and flag-waver's parades." One of the most famous Palio contests in Italy is held annually in the city of Asti, near Turin. For one day the whole town travels back in time. Flags, drums, and medieval costumes fill the streets and give life to a magical display. The mayor of Asti is on hand to start the horse race. [Brignolo Fabrizio, Mayor of Asti] "Issuing the permit for the Palio contest was an extraordinary emotion. For us it is a major event where we see young people who cultivate a tradition handed down by their fathers. It is an opportunity to present our region, to share both our history and traditions with the whole world." And locals put their hearts into the re-enactment, seeing it as a way to bring back "the good old days." [Alberto Pasta, Assessor, Palio of Asti] "It is a festival that is not just a horse race because the Palio has 40 thousand different facets. And these facets also involve profound aspects of tradition and culture because our festival has its roots in the Middle Ages, the period the city had its heyday." The event gets its ... Man Lives off the Land in Italy
Giordano has chosen a simple way of life. Inspired by traditional ways of farming, he grows food without using chemicals or machinery. He is largely self-sufficient, and has found a balance with nature and with himself. [Giordano Cellai, Self-Sufficient Farmer]: "My first goal was to be self-sufficient because I felt I needed to support myself in order to be able to be free - as a person, as a human being. Doing this kind of job made me more aware of what food is, how a plant sacrifices life in order to support us. Basic things are food and shelter. That's what we all need really. I become more basic in my choices and I started to live a simpler life." Giordano started his small farm in Tuscany, central Italy, in 2005. It was a huge lifestyle change, but in actuality everything went smoothly. [Giordano Cellai, Self-Sufficient Farmer]: "Many difficulties I can recall going back to the way I was living before. When I made this choice everything went like better. Less things, less baggage to carry around, less problems. I just respect what surrounds me and I feel I have something back from this respect." Of course, there are still things that need money. Giordano also works on a nearby farm from time to time, but his story is largely a successful one. In the hustle and bustle of a modern material society, he has found peace and personal freedom. Italy Wine Yields Down but Quality Up
Italian wine production may be down this year%mdashexperts estimate a reduction of between 6 and 25 percent in various regions over 2012. The chill of last winter, combined with drought from a long, hot summer has made this year's Italian grapes dryer, with less weight and higher sugar content. Despite the reduced output, wine producers expect the result will be wines of very high quality. The Piedmont Region of northern Italy, which is famous for its great number of quality wines, like 'Barolo', 'Barbera d'Asti' and its sparkling wine, has been the least affected. Producers in Piedmont say this year's looking promising. [Mauro Fracchia, Wine Producer]: "The grape harvest this year looks very good. There's every reason for us to definitely have five-star vintage wine. The grapes are very mature because the weather allowed us to leave them until their optimum ripeness before picking. The quantity is slightly low but this is also good because it's made the quality better." Enologists%mdashwho study the art of wine making%mdashsay good wine depends on the grapes' composition; those in the region are satisfied with this year's quality. [Fabio Fracchia, Enologist]: "This year's grapes present high alcohol levels. Their chemical parameters and acidity are very good and the colors are very rich, so it should produce wine that is very balanced. They should yield excellent wines with good aroma and overall balance." Italy is one of the leading wine producers, with exports reaching worldwide ... Stolen Renoir Painting Sold for $7 at Flee Market
A Renoir painting purchased at a flea market for seven US dollars is believed to be one stolen from the Baltimore Museum of Art in 1951. Full story: A Virginia auction house said on Friday it was working with federal investigators to determine the legal ownership of a Renoir painting that was purchased at a flea market for seven US dollars. The Potomack Company auction house canceled the sale of the painting "Paysage Bords de Seine" by Pierre-Auguste Renoir after information was presented that the work was stolen from the Baltimore Museum of Art decades ago. The painting was to have gone under the hammer on Saturday, but ownership questions halted the sale. [Elizabeth Wainstein, Owner, The Potomack Company]: "We had a phone call from the Baltimore Museum of Art from the director letting us know that they had discovered in their files after the Washington Post had been there, that the painting%mdashthere was a notation that the painting had been stolen in 1951. And once we learned that, we immediately contacted the FBI and withdrew the painting from the auction." A Virginia woman bought the signed French Impressionist painting at a West Virginia flea market, hoping the frame would be of some use. She ignored the work until it turned up again while she was cleaning her house. She had it appraised by Potomack in July and the auctioneers verified it as a Renoir and estimated its worth at 75000 to 100000 US dollars. Asia's Rich Crave Luxury Handmade Cars
Despite the economic outlook, handcrafted luxury cars made in Malaysia are still in high demand in Asia and the Middle East, with customers willing to wait up to two years for the car of their dreams. Full Story: A hundred car craftsmen are hard at work at this small factory on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur. They polish the elegant body and fit it with custom-made parts. Leather is cut and stitched by hand to create the seats of the Bufori Motor Car luxury vehicles which can cost anywhere from 15000 to 30000 US dollars. But despite the hefty price tag, the cars are wildly popular among the rich in Asia and the Middle East and the factory can't keep up with demand, despite global economic doldrums. The business is owned by a family of Lebanese-Australians who started their business in Sydney, and moved to Malaysia in 1992 to meet the growing demand from Asian customers. Gerry Khouri, the founder and managing director of the Bufori company explains how much time and effort goes into each car. [Gerry Khouri, Bufori Founder and Managing Director]: "If you look at a mass-produced car maker, 50 man hours is considered too much. We are talking 3500 is how fast this car we can make by hand, and 9000 for the big one. It's a lot of man hours we got into these cars. [Julie Smith, Owner of Fowlty Towers]: (Female English) "Well, rehoming ex-battery hens, a lot of people asked what they would do when they went on holiday with the hens, so I started looking after them as a favour and then I thought well it might be a bit of a business and we'll try and get them sorted so we ended up with lots of people ringing up and asking if I could look after their hens when they went on holiday. Somebody went in and had a baby and just respite really, so they don't have to get up so early in the morning and this is how 'Fowlty Towers' started." Giant Golden Moon Lands in Hong Kong's Victoria Park
The Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival is just around the corner and organizers of festivities in Hong Kong are getting ready. Lanterns light the pathways of Victoria Park and this year a special lantern is set on the water. The Mid-Autumn Festival is also called the Moon Festival. It falls on the fifteenth day of the eighth month of the Chinese lunar calendar. This year, that's September 30th. The holiday is based on a love story between an earth bound mortal and a celestial maiden who lives on the moon. The architects of this year's winning lantern design were inspired by this folk tale. [Kristof Crolla, Winning Designer]: (male, English) "It's a lantern for the mid-Autumn festival and it symbolizes a legend. And it's a very local legend about Chang'e who is a moon goddess who lives on the moon, she was banished there. And once per year she was visited by her husband, Houyi, so it's, it's a story about love and being reunited. We took this quite literally and we thought that this love and the passion that could come from this would be so hot that the moon would actually catch fire. So we thought that we would bring a flaming moon down into Victoria Park and through that make it into a big light and sound spectacle." The Golden Moon lantern is six stories high and is made from steel, bamboo, cloth, and LED lights. The flaming moon sits atop a body of water. The lanterns light pathways that wind through its center. Multicolored lights move in a light show reflected in the water ... From: NTDTV Views: 256 5 ratings Time: 01:39 More in News & Politics

Island Dispute Heats up Between China and Japan at UN
The Chinese Foreign Minister told the United Nations on Thursday that the Diaoyu or Senkaku islands were stolen from China by the Japanese in 1895, and that the Japanese governments recent purchase of them is unacceptable. [Yang Jiechi, Chinese Foreign Minister]: (Chinese, male) "China urges Japan to immediately revoke its wrong decision to 'buy' the Diaoyu Islands and stop all actions that undermine China's territorial sovereignty." Japan's cabinet secretary has replied that Japan would promote and explain its views on the disputed islands. [Osama Fujimure, Japanese Cabinet Secretary]: (Japanese, male) "This is what China is insisting unilaterally and we see it as totally baseless. There will be a time for us to counter-argue and we will do it properly." The islands, situated in waters rich in natural gas deposits, and a haven for fishing, have been administered by Japan since 1895, but China has declared them "sacred territory," and Taiwan also claims sovereignity over them. Both China and Japan have patrol boats in the area, and there are concerns that an incident may occur, sparking a bigger conflict. Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda said on Wednesday there would be no compromise on the island issue. Threats are now becoming personal; Japanese media reports that a sealed envelope containing a rifle bullet addressed to the Japanese Prime Minister was delivered to the Chinese Embassy in Tokyo. 5 Chinese Amongst Victims in Nepal Plane Crash
It was a clear sunny day when the small Dornier aircraft took off from the Kathmandu airport in Nepal. The plane was on its way to a base camp by Mount Everest on Friday, but it never made it. The plane ran into a bird shortly after takeoff, killing all 19 passengers on board. Five Chinese passengers, and seven British were among the dead. All other victims were Nepal natives. The plane was on route to Lukla, an airport near the base of Mount Everest. The majority of the passengers were tourists who had come to Nepal to hike. This is the 6th plane crash in Nepal in less than two years, and the second this year. Tourism officials worry that this could deter tourists from travelling in Nepal, which has eight of the world's 14 highest mountains. Tourism in Nepal currently makes up 4% of the economy.
